"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
    “Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on TH-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on TH-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Palestinians live in an apartheid, colonial-settler state, one that has dispossessed them of their land for some seventy years, has forced them to live in dehumanizing conditions that are worse than an open-air prison (unlike Palestinians, inmates are not periodically bombed), persecutes them for their religious affiliation, devastates them economically, seeks to (and yet has failed to) break them psychologically, interminably terrorizes and periodically massacres them as a policy (some of Israel’s politicians speak of killing Palestinians as ‘mowing the grass’).

He has never known what he was talking about. He talks about Marxism he doesn't know anything about it, not even the basics. In the debate with Žižek he even admitted to have only read one half of communist manifesto out of all the Marxist books. In the same debate he tried to debunk Marxism by saying that although some capitalists exploit their workforce most capitalists don't. Which sounds great, right? The problem is in Marxism profit is exploitation, there can be no profitable privately owned company without exploitation. He either doesn't know what is meant by exploitation in Marxism or he is shamelessly lying.
He said communists killed tens of millions of people. That's another brazen and shameless lie. He cites black book of communism and similar books that have no evidence in them, all they have are wild guesses and extrapolations based on individual crimes. No Westerner during and shortly after the cold war could have possibly known how many people communists have killed on the other side of the iron curtain.
Declassified NKVD files showed that monster Stalin killed 700-800 thousands of Russians in the 1930s (which makes Stalin a horrific monster). Outside of this period no mass murderers happened. Only 1% of gulag prisoners died there during peace time.
Jordan Peterson took the data that shows former communist countries emancipated women and presented the data with the spin that women are more emancipated in countries where there are less feminists.
He manipulated and lied even on shit that doesn't matter. I remember hearing him say oral tradition can remain unchanged for hundreds of years, he needed that fact to make some point which I don't even remember, it wasn't anything important, but I remember this argument that he made because even middle schoolers in my country know that oral tradition can survive unchanged for hundreds of years. In my country we have many epic poems and each poem has many versions because not one of them would survive unchanged for hundreds of years. That's why we say those poems have a "collective author" as many people added, subtracted, changed the poems.
In one of his earlier videos (really earlier videos, before 2014 if not from 2000s), he blatantly lied that there was no gambling in Canada before Canadian government created the lottery. Gambling has existed for thousands of years, from at least the times of ancient Rome and Greece and he says Canadian government was to be blamed for the fact that gambling exists. He has to know that's a lie.
Anyways, I am off track here, the point is he will blatantly lie even when it comes to unimportant stuff. I guess if you want to be really generous to him you can say that he just makes stuff up when he talks publicly, but that's not much better than lying.
What especially gets under my skin is the confidence with which he either deliberately lies or talks shit about things he knows nothing about. And he does so publicly.

That is an honest question. I don't know what affect addictive drugs might have on the neurocognition, personality, and ideology. But social science research has shown that certain kinds of ill health (parasite load, pathogen exposure, etc) can increase sociopolitical conservatism and right-wing authoritarianism. It is useful to note that, while getting treatment for his addiction, he got a severe infection that almost killed him. He looked really bad for a time and it's highly likely it did permanent damage. So, if it wasn't for the evil he now supports, one might be tempted to pity him.

I agree, it was something I really struggled with when I was learning history. Don't people KNOW the difference between right and wrong? I think a lot of propaganda is generated to strike fear into people, and when they are afraid their rational thinking goes offline and they are driven by pure emotion. This is why Israel supporters always ask "does Israel have a right to exist" because they have been raised to think everyone wants to kill them. And really, nobody gives a fig what a person's religion is, ironically the reason people are against Israel is because of how it behaves, and the behaviour is the manifestation of the fear they are taught. A perfect circle of hate and lies.

Now you have a demographic of young men who thought they'd be successful automatically if they make their bed and dress nicely, and they're angry at the world that it didn't pan out.
Not to mention, Peterson platforms himself on being a logical man of science, then tells people Jesus is the one true god. He has a psychology degree, and uses that to pretend to be an expert in economics, business, law, biology, chemistry, physics, history, geography, etc etc. He's a fraud who's one true talent is debating. I was a big Jordan Peterson fan back in the 2018-19 era. If I look with a sober mind at the time, he was one of several that helped me finish getting through college, I was a very depressed engineering student. I did not take the move to Daily Wire well. If you get me going I will rant and rave about how he's betrayed half of the people his psychology advice could help because he's segregated it behind a right-wing news outlet's paywall.
All that to say, my speculation as to why he took the political turn - specifically to the anti-establishment right - is because his biggest critics came from the pro-establishment left. Classic case of "these people with this set of politics bullied me and now my brain is broken and I run into the arms of the political ideology that is the most antithetical to them that I can possibly find".

    • @student99bg
      @student99bg 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

He is even worse in his books. You can find people on TH-cam reading several pages of JP's books. He has always been a radical, insane pro religious person who hid it at the time because he knew he would lose most of his audience if they knew how insane he was. And no, they didn't take out of context nor straw man him, they would read a couple of pages from his book and criticize it.
Jordan Peterson is also a brazen, shameless and deliberate liar.
There are more things, but I am tired to write more, it is after midnight here where I live (Serbia, former Yugoslavia).
