    I have since discovered that the Hornby Select has been updated to allow all CVs to be altered and any Select ( however old) can be updated by Hornby for a small fee + pp. You would need to contact them to arrange this. Although Hornby I understand have currently workshop restrictions in place following Govt guidelines on COVID 19, they will be able to do this shortly I’m sure.
    My Select has old firmware and the information is for those who either choose not to upgrade or who are unable to for whatever reason. The info was not intended to mislead nor discourage use of the Select (it is a great starter controller, I did buy one!). Someone does not need to replace the controller with a more expensive one if you chose to sent it in for upgrade.
    Apologies for any misrepresentation and misunderstanding

    Hi John. Very many thanks for your tutorials. I have just started DCC railway modelling (in my senior years) in n gauge and decided on this as my gauge of choice, due to space restrictions. You are gradually de-mystifying, from my perspective, a lot of areas that a beginner found puzzling or seemingly complicated. Thanks for keeping to the basics, it's been really useful. I now know which basic CV's do what. When I can upgrade my controller from the basic Bachmann Farish, I will have the confidence to have a bash at making the appropriate changes. I promise not to meddle in CV29 when the time comes. Just as an aside, I recently bought the Farish Midland Pullman Blue Train, a few having been, or so it looks, to have been held back by Bachmann and then recently released to the market. What a beautiful model this is. The full scale train is one that I've long held a special affection for from the days when I used to see it at Manchester Central station as a boy. A bright blue train amongst the mainly black or dark green engines was mesmerising. Cheers

      Yes I agree the blue Pullman is indeed a gorgeous train. I don’t have one as my layout is more current around Manchester Piccadilly, which I understand was formerly named as Manchester Central?

    • @geoffknight4881
      @geoffknight4881 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John. Manchester Piccadilly was formerly London Road station and I vaguely remember London Road with the original Victorian/Edwardian facade before the current and previous modern incarnations. The train halls however have not changed a great deal other than a lick of paint, new lighting and up to date facilities. It's still a great station however. Manchester Central was the old Cheshire Lines station located a little outside the immediate city centre around the Lower Moseley street area. It was a single span roofed station, with a grand but simple frontage and it's own hotel, "The Midland" across the road, a very impressive place which still operates today. The old station that closed in 1969 is now an exhibition/events hall and conference centre and is currently being used as a Nightingale Hospital. I think that out of the four principal Manchester stations at that time it was my favourite. Some years ago, I spoke to someone who worked on the railways at Manchester Central and he told me that it was a "pig" to work because of the limited number of lines at the "throat" that came across a narrow viaduct. If one line went down the whole system collapsed. He said that was one of the reasons BR called it a day there when they restructured the Manchester services. The station was more or less abandoned for years but just before it was renovated myself and a couple of friends were having a good rummage around for old bits and bobs and taking photos for posterity . A construction worker came over to us and said we shouldn't be in the building (although it was still open at the time as a car park). When we explained what we were doing, he kindly took us into the bowels of the old station where the old turntables were for horse drawn goods wagons. He also showed us the original stonemasons figures/marks that were placed to denote who had done what on the arched brickwork. The marks were brilliantly carved, goats heads, sheeps heads, devils heads, bulls heads etc. Nice experience. If you fancy a look a the old station, Google Images or the Manchester Library local image collection have an array of pics. Sorry for the ramble. Cheers Geoff

    All very interesting John. I will take a look at some of my locos with the older Gaugemaster and Bachman chips. Ive always been a bit wary of doing that so your video has really helped. I recently used the new Bachmann 8 point chip (which are Zimo chips) in my latest purchase( the A1) which has slower acceleration and deceleration built in with active braking (which first appeared with the Next 18 chip on the Castle). It really adds something to the driving of the loco (but not so much that I am going to change all the chips!). Stephen

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Stephen I’m glad you found it useful. Do be aware not all chips respond in the same way, my gauge master chips, black ones simply rubbish, most burnt out, but have demoted any remaining to dummy car lighting duties lol.
      8- point chip? Not heard of that, have few next 18 now. Please do spill what’s it like. On OO the 158 has a plux22, few extra functions

    Hi John, absolutely invaluable video and very well taught for us “year one” students 😱😂😂😂 As a Z21 user this video is a little treasure so many thanks for making it 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 As an aside have you ever had Dapol (not imperium) or gaugemaster chips accept the start command and then blindly ignore all other communication until you pull them from the track 😤😤 For that reason I only use Zimo or Lenz chips, but maybe it was wrong CV’s all along 🤔 Once again very best regards from County Wicklow ☘️

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you I’m so pleased it was helped. Someone suggested it a few weeks ago, but not been able to do till now. I asked on FB if people would be interested, the overwhelming response was yes, so here it is.
      I don’t use gaugemaster chip any more as they seemed to be the cheapest of the cheap. Bought 10, 10 blew, every last one! Never again, and I couldn’t get refund on any, gaugemaster didn’t want to know, blaming me. Awful!
      The Imperium chips I’ve always found to be stunning if I’m honest and just tried my OO gauge 21 pin chip I have in the class 121, reset CV 2 no issues. Could be a faulty one? Can you read CV
      2? Does it run well otherwise?

    • @Wickford_N_Gauge
      @Wickford_N_Gauge 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, the Imperiums work a treat, rather it is the 6 pin chips they install in their DCC ready to run models 😱 Good to know you had the same experience of Gaugemaster chips, Rails of Sheffield must be on commission to install them 😤😤 do never ask them to do a chip install for you 😉 Once again many thanks for such a valuable resource 🤩

    Hi John, I have just been watching Allans latest video @ dragon junction and he mentioned that a loco went shooting of when he got a short and he had to reset his decoder, which got me thinking about your video on cv's If memory serves me, this is caused by cv 29's standard default to run on dc and dcc, and when the short occurs the loco thought it was in dc mode and shot off due to the track having constant power from the dcc. so this got me thinking about Piccadilly and the size and sheer amount of stock you have. do you alter cv29 to just run in dcc mode or are they set up for both? all the best Tony.

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tony, thank you for that info, and weirdly Im watching Allans video now. Just passed the bit about 37, so you didn’t spill the spoilers lol.
      Since I bought the black z21 and lowered the voltage I very rarely (if at all now) get trains shooting off. The one that did strangely if off the track. I had to fit a new motor, with now fits why. Id forgotten how bad it was, but motor must have been damaged by shorting. Otherwise I try to use Bachmann (zimo) decoders and never had issue with those. Do occasionally get DMU lights not working correctly, ok once chip has been reset. Maybe thats another symptom

And knowing that you are a teacher as you mention it; I have a Z21, and my trains are MTH and a scale train from the USA, (sorry), I have a locomotive that only runs forward, I have already restarted it several times and I cannot remove the lock, so that it also runs backwards. Do you know how to do this?
