From Red and Blue to Sword and Shield, people having been trying their hands at the Pokemon League for over 25 years now! It's resulted in a lot of champions, a lot of tough Pokemon, and a lot of tough battles. We've all racked up our fair share of wins and losses, but when you really put everything in order- from one story to the next- which Pokemon Trainer really stands on top as being the greatest of all time? Whose journey is the most impressive? Whose team has the strongest Pokemon? And most importantly, who would beat who in an all out battle? It's been a few days, and I've read a lot of comments. So here is my usual post-release FAQ!
*Q1:* "Does Victor/Gloria dethrone Elio/Selene in the Lore Method if we include the events of Crown Tundra?"
*A1:* Not as long as Elio/Selene has access to Ultra Necrozma. The strongest legendary caught in the Crown Tundra storyline is regular Necrozma, ironically enough. Ultra Necrozma is unavailable in the game, because it requires a fusion between Necrozma and Solgaleo or Lunala, plus an extra burst of Ultra Necrozma's original energy by use of the Z Power Ring and crystals. That means that even with a generous estimate, Victor/Gloria's strongest legendary is still only _half_ as powerful as Elio/Selene's strongest legendary- at best! ...Yikes! Ultra Necrozma can probably bench their whole party by itself! ...Thanks, Lillie!
*Q2:* "Is the outcome of the Red battle definitive in Ethan/Lyra's favor?"
*A2:* For our purposes, yes. Defeating Red causes the credits to roll and the game to end, indicating that it is a definitive part of the narrative. If you go back to the mountain post-game, he's gone. It's true that you can technically _lose_ to Red, but doing so just results in a black out. You wake back up in the Pokemon Center and get to try again as many times as needed. It's no different than losing any other battle, again indicating that victory is the intended outcome.
*Q3:* "Is Ultra Necrozma more powerful than Arceus, Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina?"
*A3:* No, but none of those Pokémon are canonically captured by a protagonist, so they were not included in this analysis.
*Q4:* "Lucas/Dawn _does_ canonically defeat Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina in their game, don't they? Shouldn't that make them the strongest in the Lore Method?"
*A4:* Not necessarily. You have the option of Capturing, Fighting, or Running from those Pokémon, and you even get a unique branch of dialogue for each option, indicating that Running _is_ a legitimate conclusion to the confrontation. Surrounding discussion also indicates that Lucas/Dawn was only attempting to quell the Pokémon rather than overpower it outright, which makes much more sense when you think about it. Otherwise, you're suggesting that these kids trained a team of ordinary Sinnoh Pokémon, who can only destroy mountains at best, to hit so hard that they could literally crack the universe in half. We don't really have any supplemental evidence for that level of absurd power growth. It's unlikely any of the Creation Trio were using the full extent of their abilities in that battle.
*Q5:* "What is considered 'canonical' for the sake of this video?"
*A5:* Anything that results in additional narrative that would have otherwise been left unaddressed. Take the Cynthia battle in Black/White for example. You don't really _need_ to defeat her to complete the game, but there are tiny bits of exposition that can't be unlocked unless you _do._ Ultimately, we decided anything that unlocks additional narrative should be considered canon to the events of the game in order to honor Game Freak's desire to world build. Things that do not unlock narrative and instead just result in an achievement or one of many possible dialogue branches were considered canonically ambiguous. This also lines up with Red's portrayal in the Johto games, as his team reflects a Pokémon Yellow run that finished the non-mandatory narratives surrounding Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, and Lapras. Similarly, events in Black 2/White 2 suggest that the non-mandatory post-game quests from Black/White were _also_ completed.
Despite the above mentioned, we did not consider the narratives unlocked by Event Pokémon and the "Complete Pokédex" side quest to be canon, as they contradict too much of the overall series lore. Surrounding canon is very adamant about the fact that certain mythical Pokémon are still in the wild and nobody has ever captured all of them.

Adding to this answer:
It also has been stated by Cyrus that catching the legendary Pokemon (Dialga, Palkia and Giratina) surpresses their power and only the Red Chain makes it possible to control them without losing access their reality warping qualities. So even if they were canonically caught, there is a chance that Necrozma still has most of it's power and could beat them "lore-wise".
It's open for interpretation, but this could create a situation at which the dimension trio is just too limited by being used by a trainer and Necrozma is not bound by such law (as far as we know).

@@Kanethedragon Correct in a way as all of the Gen 5 protagonists Hilbert, Hilda, Nate, and Rosa, along with all of the Gen 6 protagonists Calem, Serena, and the AU versions of Brendan, and May, and the Gen 8 protagonists Victor, and Gloria are officially in the canon recognized as being in the age-group of 15-16 with Calem, and Serena being the oldest due to them receiving Pusedo-Immortality and losing the ability to age due to their exposure to Lysander's machine during the finale of X, and Y.

To be fair, Cosmoem also just kinda floats anyway, so it's weight is kinda negated by it's own powers keeping it afloat, so Ash is more likely just moving something that is floating as if it's weightless.
Though in other scenes Ash DOES just...chuck a huge ass log and jumps what seems like dozens of feet in the air. So this child is randomly very physically strong lol.

Here I was thinking Arceus was the most powerful Pokemon since I haven't played a Pokémon game since Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire on an emulator or something and I didn't even finish it.

@@omnipotentturkey0632 That I can't relate to. I steam rolled the elite 4 as well, they weren't a challenge with Torterra at the helm. Seriously, that thing was a BEAST, hands down the strongest Pokemon I've trained (or at least it feels like it in hindsight). I legit don't know why it became so strong, maybe by some miracle I accidentally EV trained it (I remember level grinding at some weird routes just for fun) but at the end of it all, that thing became pretty unstoppable. Good times man. Good times.

Technically, the lore method is the most reasonably sound estimate, but the level and strat method also work too since if you gave Red a level 88 Dialga he'd suddenly bump up.

For the "legendary on your team" category, I imagine Lucas/Dawn will overthrow the current top spot once the gen 4 remake comes out. Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are all more or less reality warpers, and will likely get some extra powered-up from as is par for the course nowadays.
Idk even to that being able to warp reality doesnt equate to flat out power to destroy something on the scale of a solar system.
@@yournobody6487 Dude, they're called the Creation Trio for a REASON. Dialga LITERALLY governs all of time itself. Palkia does the same with all of space itself, and Giratina, depending on who you ask, does the same with either antimatter or gravity. They don't just "destroy" solar systems. They create and destroy the very aspects of reality that allow them to EVEN EXIST as they please.

As for giratina, he is shown to be equal to palkia and dialga, they need to team up to properly fight giratina.

@@yournobody6487 I don't think you fully grasp what it means to be a god of creation. If Arceus decides that you don't exist, you don't exist. It doesn't matter how powerful you are, or how many planets you can blow up simultaneously. You, as an object in space-time, are ultimately, and irrevocably, at the whim of the very being that created space-time, including all the matter, energy, and phenomena that created you.
So yes, if a gen 4 remake comes out that canonically says you caught Arceus, or any of the creation trio for that matter, there's little room for argument... Unless of course they insert an explanation along the lines of saying that they are holding back their power, they don't really obey you so much as they just follow you around, or that you only capture an aspect of their essence, rather than their full power.
Red. Red will always be the strongest trainer I looked up to. Standing on top of the submit alone for years to come.

My Dork saved the world, got 50 plus wins in EACH of the battle Tree formats, thus Beating Red and Blue, became Champ and took countless pics to nab all the stamps lol.

Y'know, when I was older I kind of figured something out Cynthia's weakness. That lead Spiritomb with no weakness, also sucks at offense and makes good setup fodder to sweep the rest of her team with.
I think Kukui is a bit underrated in the strategy department. He packs a team full of bruisers, but with viable competitive support moves like a speedy stealth rock lead, tailwind, and screens. Unfortunately for him, he exists in the same timeline as broken xp shares, so you don't have to grind much.
Another huge point for Gold/Lyra. There's an event programmed into game that involves them having Arceus to create their own god of time/space/antimatter. Also, they can get both of the mascot birds.

Red is an optional boss in the gold/silver games. So id argue its canonically contentious if gold actually defeated red.

@@goroakechi6126 In No Fear the ring was drained when he fought a Manhunter. He managed to recharge it by punching the android in the face, pretty much taking the ring past 100% capacity, allowing him to fly it into space and making it feel genuine fear for the first time, if I remember correctly. It could be an interesting topic if you take what the Lantern can give, and how much the Ring can actually support.

I honestly felt that the Gen 4 end game was one of the most challenging/competitive. I can remember struggling with Cynthia and Barry’s jumped up levels, but I also remember gettin hard stomped in the Battle Tower, both Pearl and HG.
Some jerk even tried to hard stall me with a Milotic with Aqua Ring, Surf, Toxic, Protect. Thank god I had a Quagsire and Bronzong.

For the lore part, isn’t it canon that Red completed the dex? So that means capturing Mewtwo and the birds. And going by the definition of Mewtwo being legendarily strong, and other characters being able to stand a chance because the legendary held back or something... Mewtwo didn’t want to be caught. Your analogy of MMA or boxing is spot on. Every Pokémon match is comparable to an MMA match. Your team is designed to have a specific skill set with certain EVs and your opponents team also has a different skill set. The challenge in all competition is the strategy used at the highest level, because at that point skill/power are relatively equal such as champions like Lance, Wallace, Cynthia etc

Serena and Calem are about 17 being the oldest, Rosa and Nate are the second oldest at 16, Hilda and Hilbert are 14, Victor/Gloria are estimated to be at least young teens as Hop already had a pokemon for a while and they generally look a bit older. BDSP and Legends Arceus pretty much makes Lucas & Dawn the strongest, by having Cynthia dethrone Red as the strongest trainer, and by having them canonically catch Dialga, Palkia, Giratina AND Arceus, who is far, FAR stronger than we ever probably thought it was

Easy it’s Red. When Blue was champion he stated that being Kanto champion =being the most powerful trainer in the world Red is the kanto champion and any “lost” Red has ever had has been through non canon post game. Ye. Edit the GSC battle did happen but the conclusion to that battle is odd. GF helped write the script for Pokémon masters and Lyra in that game stated that she actually lost her battle against Red so who knows.
The conclusion to the GSC battle is definitive. Winning the battle causes the credits to roll, and Red disappears from the mountain if climbed again in post-game. Losing the battle simply causes you to reawaken in the Pokemon Center before challenging him again like literally any other battle in the game. Random fluff text from the English version of Pokemon Masters is significantly less canon by comparison, there's no evidence that Game Freak helped write that line, and that entire story takes place in a different continuity. I have nothing at all against Red, but as Grimsley would say, a loss is a loss. The character should not receive special protection just because he is the original and most recognized protagonist.
