Just for the record, there are many interpretations of the Norse myths and Ragnarok in particular. Due to a lack of historic preservation and later influences by Christianity, it is largely unclear how much of what we know was present in the original story. Some scholars will tell you one thing, while others will tell you something entirely different. This video explores one possible interpretation with its primary sources being the works and studies of Mircea Eliade and Rudolf Simek. This is also the interpretation that Marvel Comics adheres to.

And yes, i'm aware that it also nothing like in Norse Mythology where Loki is blood brother to Odin.
I recommend you check out Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology book, he goes through pretty much all of those myths in a very concise manner and with entertaining writing to boot. I have the audiobook read by Gaiman himself on my phone.
@Ungreatful Duck; actually it's a bit more complex than that even, more than even that of the Greek, Roman and Egyptian pantheons, and even the Shinto (those guys get complicated). The reason for most of the confusion rather than convoluted stories as with most of those others is that the Norse people relied pretty much only on oral tradition, and most of their legends were written down by Snorri Sturlason 150 years after the official end of the viking era (the battle of Stamford Bridge), at a point when the people who believed in these myths were mostly converted to Christianity already and had been told to forget that stuff for all the obvious reasons. Hence it gets a little bit confusing just on the deeds of historical vikings who walked this earth let alone flew in the skies; we are pretty sure there once was a man called Ragnar Lothbrok who died in a snake pit but that's pretty much all we know for sure of him, and that only from writers on the other side (who demonized them in the process). Their myths and sagas gets even more confusing considering they were probably not all coherent even back then. Quite frankly if there weren't conflicting stories abounding I would be more suspicious that the whole thing wasn't made up by some later era romance writer like the Camelot stories largely were.

Odin's view might be similar to the regenerations of The Doctor. The 10th in particular saw regeneration as death of the current him, and wanted to prevent that change for as long as he could. In the end, he/she's still The Doctor, but as a different version each regeneration.
Technically, in the original Ragnarök Loki, Thor, Odín, Heimdall and some other important gods will all die... But, there will be some of them that will survive, creating a new panteon with the remaning gods... also the human population will be restaured by two surviving humans that were hiding in the woods of iggdragsil... and a new land will be given to them...The point is that it is a new universe, but is just a part of what it was... all the other races (elves, dwarfs, dark elves, etc.) are completelly extinct... their worlds were burned to ashes and the only thing that will mostly come back will be midgard (and also the land of the deaths... but just bigger...) Thor won´t come back, Odin also won´t come back and all the death gods, humans, dwarfs, monsters (fenrir, the serpent of mingard, Surt,etc.) are all death ad will be death... The reincarnition of these gods are something that is never mentioned in the original mythology... (maybe is part of marvel´s norse mythology, but not from the original norse mythology... Examples of that? Mjolnir is made of iron, not Uru, actually Uru doesn´t exist in the original mythology... And talking about Mjolnir... Everyone can lift it, if you are strong enough... the "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." is complete bullshit in the original mythology... )
Now, lets talk about the marvel mythology... Of being trapped in an endless cruzade were you will die and be born again and again until eternity... that is just a nightmare... See your world, friends, family die in a endless circle, where you will do exacly the same, fighting the same opponent, losing in the same way... is a sick joke... Maybe Odin don´t wants to prevent the ragnarok, maybe he just want to be free of that circle of non-sense... Or maybe he wants to die for eternity... Just think about it, living the exact same lifem endind in the same way... it is pretty sacry, huh?
I like the whole "unless he is worthy" thing it feels like Excalibur.

In norse mythology, it was the end of the world, as we know it at least. It was said that the world tree, Yggdrasill would not completly burn down, and that two humans were holding on to one of it's branches, to wait until the fire stopped and baldir rose from the dead to rule humanity.
Emil Möller some have said that this ”two humans survive” thing was a more positive outlook on the whole matter brought in by christianity and that the original story was much more depressing and ends with every living thing dying
the guy totaly miss the point: Ragnarok is the end of the world as we know it and nothing promise that the new worl will be the same with the same events. Even the Edda say that the gods are dead and now live in some halls for ever while some other survive and will populate the new world.
It's not a circle it's a cycle (which doesn't mean the next cycle will the the same it means: when one end another start).

(Spoiler) in Thor Ragnarok: (also, people should've watched it by now, i mean Black Panther just came out a while ago, like a week or so, so i hope no one complains) Thor states near the end of the movie "this isn't about stopping it from happening, but letting it happen" or something along the lines, watching this it makes a little more sense now.

I never knew any of this before so thanks for the knowledge-up :) also, there are rumors that Avengers 4 will somehow have either flashbacks/actual time-travel to both WWII and Avengers 1 timeline. So this whole concept of the present actions influencing the past (Ragnorak) will fit well within the this "Last" stage of the current phase in the MCU. We will see the present affect the past, creating a new present. Brill.

Sooooo.... essentially conon means that it is offecial... that it is a part of the current version of something! for example after the star wars move came out... a bunch of books were written that go into details about the star wars universe, its characters, ad its history! these were called the star wars expanded universe (eu)! when disney bought star wars, they said the eu was no longer canon... its no longer considered a an official part of star wars even though its the best part! the only important thing about canon is that if womething is canon then it effects what can be added because the new things mitht not make sense given what is already there! like trying to say that luke was a woman or that anikan skywalker surived ....
While airing ssj4 was canon, then the maker wanted to make a new show which couldnt be done because gt ended the series, so gt was no longer canon to make place for the new canon dbs
