+TheSmashMaster9000 Actually if you pay attention most pokemon in the anime only have 4 moves. Pikachu for example in Kanto Pikachu knew Agility however hasn't used it in many many seasons since Kanto. The most recent move Pikachu has forgotten (at least to my knowledge I'm not up to date with the anime) is Volt Tackle was replaced with electro ball. If you watch the battles you will see that only 4 moves will be called out per pokemon. I'm sure there are a few exceptions but if you randomly picked a battle you would see pokemon generally can't learn more than 4 moves.

Plus, if Tobias can control legendary Pokemon with ease, then he must be just as awesome as Cynthia, if not better. So, I don't see how you guys think Cynthia would win - if there's a counter to this, let me know (without being rude, as I do not intend on being rude).
Also, even if Garchomp isn't put to sleep, it will still lose to Darkrai. Darkrai is a beast, and we saw how it overpowered ALL of Ash's Pokemon with ease. Sceptile only got lucky, as it woke up and Tobias was surprised. Tobias could have stopped it with ice beam instead of dream eater, and thus continued to beat the rest of Ash's Pokemon. (Even Pikachu)

Actually in the Anime it is implied there are more than 8 gyms. You just have to beat 8 to enter the league.
Not to mention there's little oversight over the giving of gym badges (in the case of Volkner).
Yeah even Sinnoh they mention when maylene give up on her gym leader post and someone says (or maybe ash) he need to go to other gyms, so it's obvious more than 8 gyms are available in anime.

Unless Tobias is just a guy who stumbled upon PokeCompany building, and received a bunch of legendaries (whom he didn't train).
(sure PokeCompany doesn't exist in anime, but Tobias is an out of nowhere owner of a bunch of legendaries.. while it's common for people to own one or two in the games, in anime legendaries belong either to chosen ones, or villains, and villains lose, and Tobias ain't no chosen one)

This is a really good video that summarizes and clarifies a lot of information. My only criticism is that is sometimes takes into account info from the games that have no real bearing on the anime like Alder not being the Unova champion. That info is irrelevant and does him a disservice because in the anime canon, Alder still is champion and no one has beaten him.
Like by that logic, Iris is in the running becase she's champion in BW2 but in the anime canon she's nowhere near that strong. The same logic applies to Lance, there is nothing so suggest someone in Kanto is stronger, we have no confirmation that there is a Kanto champion stronger than him. I also think you might have under estimated Steven's strength.
But regardless of these minor criticisms, I still entirely agree with your overall conclusions. This is a a really well put together video and I think it really answers the questions so thoroughly that no one else has even bothered to make another video to answer this questions. Fantastic job!

@Gaming Reaper True, but note that Cynthia's Garchomp took a 4x Blizzard and several other attacks and brushed it off, while Darkrai staggered and was eliminated after 3 attacks, one of which wasn't even super effective
Gaming Reaper I would completely disagree. Tobias lost 2 Pokémon to Ash. If Tobias was really as strong as a champion, then he would have been able to easily sweep Ash without losing a single Pokémon.
Mystery Secret or maybe those 2 were his weakest legendaries in his squad. You could tell he wasn’t at all impressed by the battle and won the tournament by complete ease
PlzBanMyDEX First of all the “he wasn’t impressed” is completely false. He definitely was impressed considering he himself walked to Ash and told him that he had a great battle with him. Secondly what does him being impressed or not have anything to do with this? It does not. Him being impressed or not doesn’t tell you anything about how strong his Pokémon are.
Mystery Secret as the sweeping goes, maybe those were his weakest pokemon in his arsenal. We all know Cynthia’s garchomp is op but against Tobias 2 legendaries and the other legendaries or pokemon he is hiding, no way Cynthia would stand a chance. Plus, there is no mandatory rule where someone has to claim the champion title or make a run for the league champion or against the elite four. There’s 2 sides in which we don’t know what happened at the time so it’s all just theories and guesses at this point. No one really knows what occurred and who won if they did have a battle or what the circumstances were.

Right off the bat, I unfortunately have a huge problem with one of the first points: I absolutely HATE this "Gym Leaders are weak because they lose to so many trainers" logic. Gym Leaders are employed by the Pokemon League to test trainers in controlled conditions, and to provide different milestones for those trainers to pass. Gym Leaders appearing in the games in rematches and World Tournaments etc with much stronger teams is evidence that their "Gym Leader" team is not their strongest party, it's the standardised party they use for the purpose of determining a trainer's skill at that point in their journey. Any Gym Leader is automatically a high-tier trainer by virtue of qualifying to work in that position in the Pokemon League.
I don't really see how you counter that point? If you get your ass kicked over and over i dont really how you could be strong.
@@olivercharles2930 Because Gym Leaders are not going all out in most of their fights, either due to not using their most experienced Pokemon and/or because they're holding back so that the much-less experienced trainer has a chance and so that the gym is a suitable test.

Hum there are some flaws with the gym leader argument. First in the anime you just have to collect 8 recognized badges out of the gyms recognized by that league to go on to challenge this means you theoretically could never lose as a gym leader and people could go to the league if their are enough gyms to support this(their were like 10 Gary got in kanto and he didn't alot of them weren't the 8 in-game ones). Another factor It is highly likely gym leaders gimp themselves as part of being test of progress and not just merit. This is best evidenced by Brock asking red how many badges Red had before deciding to use massive handicaps like leaving alone potential pokemon to fill his party so Red as a new trainer could stand a chance. Also since Gym Badges primarily act as proof of merit you only have to prove yourself worthy of the badge to earn it. You still don't have to beat the gym leader in a battle for them to give you it. This is why Ash got several early on.
There is no definitive indication that elite four (or even the recognized champion who is only the best trainer actively going for the title thus doesn't give a definite answer to who won in Tob vs Cyn since Tobias might of decided to not defend it after winning it in the same manner red and green do in Gen 2) members need to be better at battling or training than Gym Leaders to get their job. For example Volkner is stated to not even actually be geneiunly challeneged (in the games at least don't know about the anime) despite visits from the first Sinnoh elite four member and other Gym Leaders like Jasmine. This is also not counting Green in Gen 2 who is a gym leader who is like the second strongest NPC in the game.

I did always wonder why In pokemon the gyms lecels roast as you traveled. I mean if you were born and started your adventure in the town with the last gym you would be shit out of luck.

Well in HG/SS it's really easy to catch Mewtwo in a Pokeball, you just use a dark type so it can't hurt you and just repeatedly throw them with no real need to even attack it.
We're using anime logic.
It's highly unlikely anyone could just run up to a legendary (they're totally everywhere) and throw 150 ultra balls and "boom, caught it!"
In the anime world, It's easier to assume you would have to go out of your way deliberately to find legendaries, bearing in mind most of them are either locked away or live in very treacherous or hard to navigate areas, and you would probably have to completely wear the thing down before you could even start trying to catch it. Bearing in mind that this is certainly far harder in the anime world, where pikachu uses thunderbolt on a swellow, the swellow doesn't get OHKOd, and becomes a jacked up thunderbird.

DarkPatrix If I’m not mistaken, she starts with Spiritomb too. Considering it has no weakness, it could logically take quite a few hits from most Pokémon. If she DOES lead with Spiritomb, it’s smart because you could waste some good moves taking it down... making you weaker for the rest of her team

To be fair; Tobias could have rejected the title so he wouldn't be tied down to the Sinnoh region save for special occasions.
Although this is possible, Cynthia has been seen on multiple occasions outside of Sinnoh. HG/SS in the Sinjoh ruins. Or you know, Black/White where she just kinda takes a break (I assume that is what she is doing in Unova during the summer and Spring time)... (Although, this Cynthia also mentions "A younger trainer" beating her and a Giratina.)
(I am also aware that I am here referring to the games, and not the anime.)

Fun fact: cynthia's pokémons in gen 4 have perfect IVs...god the first time I beated her I had to keep reviving palkia and empoleon till her lucario run out of moves, it was frustrating and absurdly hard
He also could just have not challenged Cynthia because something else was more time pressing (eg. Catching Deoxis or saving the world.) We may never know.

Agree. I'm not sure if Ash ever battled Cynthia in a full battle, but I would say Ash and Paul are about the same when it comes to their competency in battling. Ash barely won against Paul (using Infernape's blaze, but imagine if his last pokemon did not have that ability...), yet Cynthia totally destroyed Paul using only a Garchomp. Meaning that she would have possibly totally destroyed Ash too. Meanwhile, when Ash battled Tobias, two of Tobias' pokemon fainted. Also remember Cynthia still had 4 pokemon who are a mystery so while Tobias might have more legendary pokemon with him...Cynthia could possibly have an arceus or mewtwo XD
