Our modern day mythology is filled with so many over powered heroes and villains that sometimes it gets difficult tell who is capable of what. And perhaps the single best example of this dilemma is Saitama from the popular One Punch Man franchise- a hero who has still yet to struggle against a single opponent, despite being featured across three different realms of media. What can he do? What CAN'T he do? Is there any definable limit on his strength? And where does it all come from? Today, we embark on a journey across physics, biology, and... literature...? to finally uncover the truth about Saitama's power! Whereas I agree that Saitama and OPM is mainly a joke, a satire, a comedy, I believe it's deeper than that. It's not purely a joke. In fact, I'd say it's an intelligent deconstruction of conflict in stories in general.
Here's what I mean: take 99.9999% of stories that actually have a "good guy" and a "bad guy". In those stories, the conflict is...the good guy vs. the bad guy. Duh. But here's the problem. _We all know how this conflict ends_. Sure, it may vary in degree; sometimes the good guy dies defeating the bad guy, sometimes the bad guy leaves irreparable damage behind and the victory is bittersweet, sometimes the good guy just blows the bad guy away in a whirl of awesome. But how many stories _truly_ end with "Bad guy wins, good guy dies. The End"? Almost none.
Hence OPM jumping the curb in storytelling. ONE is smart enough to know his audience, and basically seems to be saying, "look, we all know how this sort of story ends, so let's just go past that and see what happens." OPM is the story of after the big win. It's the "what now?" story. People who say OPM is boring because it "doesn't have conflict" truly are small-minded, and can't conceive of a story that doesn't follow the exact same conflict pattern that all 56516714695727^16813784 stories before it had. It's truly different.
OPM is a gag story that has managed to make me laugh...and darn near cry, and I never feel any such emotions when watching shows that are custom designed to give you the "feels", so predictable are they. OPM, on the other hand, is a triumph of storytelling, and has cemented itself as one of my favorite stories in any medium.

Very astute. I feel Saitama's lack of challenge in being a hero "For fun (And profit)" is part of the major conflict. Saitama himself is conflicted, bored, almost uninterested, because no matter how powerful his opponent, it usually ends after a single punch.
I feel the series' main conflict is in how many so-called Heroes in the Organization are just flashy showmen, glorified actors who sometimes have a measure of fighting prowess or talents and abilities beyond the average human. Amai Mask (Sic?) is one example of a walking ego who believes that as the Number 1 Rank A hero, he's the one keeping any "lesser" heroes from advancing to S Rank status and dirtying the reputation of "real" heroes, even as he has his talk show, radio and TV dramas, musical career, etc.
And then, in comes Saitama, a C Rank hero referred to as Caped Baldy who demolishes threats to humanity in one punch, but often with serious collateral damage or other circumstances that lead to him being viewed in a less-than-respectful light by the normal people and even the other heroes around him. And yet Saitama lets on that the other heroes weakened the Sea King before he got there so that he could mop up and take the credit. Saitama did this because he's a noble person who doesn't care about glory, fame, or recognition, and he knows that if people lose faith in all of those other injured and possibly deceased heroes that he's done wrong by those heroes who helped hold off the Sea King as long as they did, including Genos, Prisoner, and even the powerless but inspiring Mumen Rider. And later on, Mumen Rider even acknowledges that he knows what Saitama did, to preserve people's faith in the heroes, and treats Saitama to a meal.
The primary conflict isn't supposed to be about literal, physical conflict, but rather the more esoteric conflicts of emotions, society, and showmanship, and how these interact both for normal people as well as within the Hero Organization and especially high ranking heroes within the S rank as well as Amai Mask and his insane celebrity status despite him not showing any of his abilities as far as heroes go (Even failing to show up during major emergencies until after all was said and done). The people want good entertainment, showmen, people to give them faith and the image of powerful and charismatic protectors. Many heroes are strong as far as humans go, many are talented, and some just have a good heart and desire to help like Mumen Rider. And then there are those who exploit celebrity status for fame, glory, popularity, and money, like Amai Mask. There are those whom allegedly test out their talents on unsuspecting and innocent people, which is how Genos came to be as he is now; a Cyborg hellbent on taking revenge on the robot that killed his family and destroyed his home, a robot allegedly unleashed as a test by a certain S-Rank hero. And finally, there's Saitama, a person who is neither vain nor greedy, not too terribly charismatic or intellectual, but has power in spades and the nobility to accept ridicule and hatred if it means that the greater good is served and people still have faith in their heroes.

Anyone else decided to revisit this video after reading chapter 168? It truly amazing how accurate his theory is here, this video is years ahead of it time, hope you upload again Tyler.
Also, regarding the video "Genos vs Saitama", when saitama made the motion to punch genos in the face, he moved in the way of HIS OWN PUNCH to block the attack, and prevent Genos from getting obliterated by the accompanying shockwave.
If u look frame by frame, u can see him make the motion.

Even though Saitama said "Serious Punch", I'm not sure if it was even that serious, besides, a serious punch is really just an ordinary punch. If I'm gonna guess, his truly serious and strongest punch would be destructive enough to end the entire universe down to the most microscopic atom a trillion times over.

It was his desire that made him so strong, considering that desires can literally change people into monsters in the OPM verse, Saitama may have been too human for that since his goal was simple. In the end, he became a human with a godlike ability. His desire must’ve been really strong for him to gain such an ability

I always understood the 100 squats, situps and 10km run as just being "pushed past YOUR limit". As in if a character with already super strength like Darkshine wanted to break HIS limit he'd need to do more. But for Saitama those 100 squats situps and the 10km run was more than he could personally handle.

you need to watch this scene carefully. Saitama punched and then moved in front of genos to shield him from the air pressure. you can see when the footage from the airview is shown that the shockwave originated behind saitama.

Doesn’t matter what ONE intended for his character to be, if he hasn’t shown the feats to be placed against someone then they lose, it’s that simple, any other argument revolving plot or a character’s “premise” or “joke” is irrelevant because it’s fallacious.

No, it is not. The Plateau effect means, that even if a newbie trains for 1 day and becomes twice as strong, that newbie will never become 100 times as strong (if his limit is < 100 times), no matter how much he trains. Saitama, not having a limiter, having trained 1000 days, would be 1000 times as strong as when he started (or 2 to the power 1000, or whatever).
