Hey men, i can tell you something about this car, i am an RX8 owner since nearly 6years for now. I never had real troubles with my car. Its the 231HP Renesis Model (6th gear). And i can tell you to drive it as daily, or just for fun (165miles range). here are some tipps and tricks for your RX8's out there to keep them alive looooong time.
    FUEL CONSUMPTION
Mazda has done a very good job developing the rotary engine and was able to massively reduce the fuel consumption of the RX-8. The manufacturer combined consumption of 12 liters per 100 kilometers may deter the ordinary everyday driver - certainly rightly - but who likes it a bit sporty, gets used to the lookout for the new vehicle quickly to such values.
Because even ordinary reciprocating engines in the same performance class as the RX-8 are very thirsty.
The engine of the RX-8 has two combustion chambers, each with 654 cm3 volume. Provides a total combustion chamber volume of 1,308 cc. 1.3 liters do not sound like much - if you're used to reciprocating engines. To convert the combustion chamber volume in displacement, the rule of thumb is the multiplier 2.3 - thus the engine of the RX-8 is roughly comparable to a 3 liter reciprocating engine. And they like to swallow too much.
    MODELS
Different model designations of the RX-8
The RX-8 is fully equipped by Mazda. Only a few details from model version to model version from each other. This also includes different model names by country. The following overview provides clarity:

    OIL/OILMUD
    Check oil level regularly
Since the rotary engine uses the oil not only for lubrication, but also for sealing the two combustion chambers, he needs a little sip from the bottle every two tank fillings.
So that the measurement of the oil level also succeeds, here is a short rule of thumb for reading:
The dipstick has a scale that indicates the minimum filling at the lower end and the maximum level at the upper end. In between, three markings are appropriate.
Between lower and upper limit is space for a total of 1.5 liters of finest engine oil.
There are 0.5 liters per mark in between.
Oilmud: where does he come from - where is he going?
Especially in the cold season forms on the dipstick a creamy greasy coffee brown substance; the oil foam.
That this is no reason to worry, I found out through extensive research in forums, where I also found the (plausible) reason.
In winter, it's cold outside and hot in the engine room. The RX-8 has a very long oil dipstick, which is why the hot oil condenses on the colder dipstick and forms oilmud.
If you change the oil, it may be that the problem is eaten and does not recur. However, Mazda's recommended Dexelia Oil seems to be particularly prone to foaming.
Anyway, you do not have to worry, because only at the top of this Oilmud occurs. Everything is alright in the sump itself.
    THE PRIMIX
Anyone who has ever fueled an old motorbike, maybe still knows the mixture of oil and gasoline, which you have to fill there. It is so-called 2-stroke oil mixed in a certain ratio to the gasoline and the vehicle refueled with it.
So, the engine receives not only gasoline for burning but also sufficient oil for the lubrication of the pistons in the displacement.
Why Premix on the Mazda RX-8?
The RX-8 has as rotary operated vehicle its special features. Sufficient supply of the engine with oil is one of them.
The rotary pistons do not seal 100% in the rotor housing. In order to compensate for this, a little engineoil is always injected into the combustion chamber to ensure the seal on the sealing strips (therefore you should also check the oil level regularly).
However, engineoil does not burn very well and so residues of unburned oil build up in the rotor housing, which may (sooner or later) get stuck in the way of capital engine damage.
To counteract this, there are various ways to supply the engine with better combustible oil. The full and partial premix.
Below I want to briefly introduce both types and the different implementation options for the RX-8
    Partially premix
In the partial premix, two-stroke oil is added to the gasoline in a low mixing ratio. Other components of the RX-8 can remain untouched.
The mixing ratio ranges from 1: 150 to 1: 450.
I myself drive 1: 333, since here can take the amount of gasoline just three times and so right the right amount of oil in milliliters.
Example calculation: with 50 liters of petrol gasoline I pour 150 ml two-stroke oil.
    Fullpremix
In the full Premix, two-stroke oil is added to the gasoline in such a high mixing ratio that the engine gets its oil exclusively from the tank and the engine oil remains untouched.
The mixing ratio here should be at least 1: 150 and not more than 1:90.
The following modifications are required for the full-length premix:
The oil pump (the OMP / OilMeteringPump) must be switched off and the oil nozzles, which normally inject the engine oil, are removed and replaced with blind plugs.
The fullpremix is ??consumed only little or no more engine oil, so you do not need to put a bottle of Dexelia more in stock. The oil change intervals remain untouched.
Which 2-stroke oil is best taken?
It is only to use fully synthetic oil. Otherwise, however, no special demands are made on the oil. There are also 2-stroke oil, which is especially suitable for rotary engines, as this practice is widespread in the USA. In Germany, however, these are not so easy and cheap to approach, as is the fully synthetic "Synth 2T" oil from LiquiMoly, which I use myself. It is very convenient to use especially because of the readable scale on the edge of the bottle and the pull-out filler legs.
    What the point of it?
Due to the combustion of the engineoil, which is unsuitable for combustion, coking deposits in the engine over time, which cause the sealing strips of the rotary piston to stick together. This deteriorates the compression in the engine compartment and not only leads to poor warm-start characteristics but also that the engine does not properly pull through. After a few tens of thousands of kilometers, these gummings can become a real engine failure, with most dealers recommending a replacement engine.
Alternatively, it is of course also possible to disassemble the engine, replace seals and perform a thorough cleaning. Unfortunately, the cost of installing an exchange engine is usually better.
With the premix, it is now possible to prevent these gumming and, as long as the existing ones are not too tight, it is also possible to solve them to a limited extent.
It is rarely too early and never too late!
Anyone who drives his Rex a few thousand miles without a premix and now converts, achieved with the two-stroke oil better combustion and depending on the persistence of the deposits, these can also be solved.
If the passage of the engine has not improved after two tank fillings, you either had no coking inside the engine, or they are already baked so hard that the two-stroke oil is powerless.
In this case it is possible to clean the engine with the "Mazda Zoom Zoom Cleaner". I have not gotten it yet, but those who did it either did not notice any change (no negatives either) or the car pulled better, started better and consumed less fuel.

      DSC/ESC
Thanks to light rotary front mid-engine and the resulting weight distribution of almost 50:50 on the front and rear axles, the RX-8 is perfect for drifting.
That's why he got a two-stage ESC from Mazda:
If you switch off the DSC of the RX-8, only a part of the system will be deactivated.
      Basic functions remain switched on.
If you want to disable the ESC completely (which is not recommended), you have to keep the switch pressed for more than two seconds.
In addition to the "DSC OFF" then appears another warning light in the dashboard. Please note that this status is saved in the logfile and can have bad consequences for you in case of an accident (underwriting).
In order to completely activate the system again, the RX-8 only has to be switched off once (disconnecting the battery is not necessary).
      THE DRIPPING
The fear of the engine spilling over hangs like a sword of Damocles over each RX8 rider. But with a little background and a few precautions, you do not need to be scared!
To comply with current European emission standards, the RX-8 - like any other modern vehicle - injects a lot of fuel into the chambers during a cold start. This fuel is not completely burned, but enters the catalyst and is then burned there, so that the cat comes as soon as possible to operating temperature; because only then there is the coveted green environmental badge.
It is important to be aware of this process to know how to drive the RX-8, and how not.
What does not work well, for example, is simply re-parked.
      Why re-park is bad
It came as it had to come, I had to re-park my car because of a set up for a move halt. Exactly five meters back to another parking lot. I get in, the engine starts and I put the car back. Parked clean, engine out and back home.
Three days later, I wanted to drive to work and the car just started to start. Four or five times I let him turn but it did not help, he did not jump. Then the bad idea, he could be drowned.
      What can help.
If the accelerator pedal is fully activated when ignited, no gasoline is injected and the engine rotates empty; shovels so the gas still in itself further back to the cat.
If everything works out, then it will start smoothly. If necessary, you must first remove the spark plugs, dry and reinsert - or you can screw in new ones.
Since I am rather untrained craftsman, I trusted that the spark plugs dry overnight. The next day so the next start attempt - unfortunately also in vain.
After all this organism, I was scared that all the unburned gas would now be waiting for the next spark in the catalytic converter, and that at the next opportunity it would take the cat to heaven.
      The catalyst was okay.
I got new spark plugs directly, as well as a set of ignition cables. One had already had a short circuit in it and would not have done it much longer anyway.
Then I decided to install a stronger starter. This increases the chance after a cold start to turn the rotor again vigorously and thus let it start. By default, only a small 1.2 kW starter is installed on the RX-8. Every Mazda workshop but likes to install the 2kW starter. The has more bums and turns the engine stronger, so that the superfluous gas can drain faster.
Since then, the Umparken is a red cloth and whenever I leave the car to someone else (cleaning, workshop, etc.), I pointed out carefully, please do not adjust park the car when cold.
For once it is warm, the problem no longer occurs (because then it is no longer a cold start and it is not injected too much gasoline).
Some have also flashed the engine control and solved the problem so - when cold, the Rex creates so but no emissions investigation more.
      RESET MOTOR CONTROL
Mazda's RX-8 has an auto-learning engine management system that collects data based on driving style, adjusting the engine management accordingly.
In general, this can be taken for granted and ignored. In some situations, however, it may make sense to clear and reload the memory of the controller: I did this on my Rex after I bought it second hand to get it used to my driving style more quickly.
The benefit of this is a slightly lower fuel consumption and a smoother running. But that can be different for everyone.
The motor control, also called PCM, has two non-volatile memories, NVRAM (Non Volatile Random Access Memory) and KAM (Keep Alive Memory).
The NVRAM stores the engine data for the mixture composition, the ignition timing and the situation of the error codes that have occurred.
The KAM stores the sensor data (such as the eccentric shaft sensor) and the current error codes.
      Delete the NVRAM
With the ignition off, press and hold the reset button on the trip meter.
Switch on the ignition (but do not start the car)
Continue to hold down the reset button until the odometer displays "TEST", then release.
Press the button until all tests have been run.
      Switch off the ignition again
      Delete the CAM
Switch on the ignition (but do not start the car)
Depress the brake pedal at least 20 times within a maximum of ten seconds until the oil pressure gauge deflects to about halfway and then returns.
      Remarks
The brake pedal does not have to be kicked very hard, but quickly.
If the oil pressure control needle does not turn off, you did not pedal fast or not often enough.
Switch off the ignition and repeat steps 1 and 2. Very quickly pedal, quietly a few times more than 20 times.
In the very old software versions (before L), there is no rash of the oil pressure gauge as a control for clearing the CAM.
This procedure also calibrates the eccentric shaft sensor.
i know it was a lot to read, but very usefull :) kind regards from austria

The Achilles heel in this system is the metering pump. About 15 years ago I installed a Sohn adapter on my 1985 RX7, improvising a used power steering reservoir mounted on the shock tower. The system worked fine without premixing (mine was the carbed 12A engine so no issues with insufficient metered oil quantity or mixing with fuel in the float bowl). The problem was with the metering pump itself. They wear out, often around 100,000 miles. (160,000 kms). After the adapter had been in use for over a year with no problems I was on a long trip. I'd filled the tank that morning and topped off the reservoir. When I again stopped to refill I noticed that I'd only consumed about half of the usual amount of 2-cycle oil from the reservoir. I premixed for the rest of the trip, and when I got home I installed another serviceable metering pump. I then tore down both the old one as well as a third metering pump that I had on hand. The difference in wear on the lobes was noticeable to the naked eye. Prior to the invention of Richard Sohn's adapter, the rotary racing community had simply ditched the oil metering pump system, installed a block-off plate where it used to mount and then went the pre-mix route. After seeing my pump fail (with no warning system to indicate that it had) I decided to do the same. No further issues were encountered after that episode.

The way I'm keeping mine running is rebuilding the engine lol. All of these are great tips, and it's stuff that I'll be sure to use once the new-ish engine is in the car. I'm having to reuse a few questionable parts of the engine, but with a few tricks and all of this good maintenance I'm hoping to get a year to two until I have more money to build an engine from the ground up for it. After getting my engine pulled apart, I found that the apex seals were worn down by about 3-4 mm, so it's no wonder I had no compression. Also, both rotor bearings were spun, so it's a wonder that it ran so well at higher rpm. Based on the internal engine wear and external damage, I suspect that I bought a drift car. It's quite impressive what a rotary engine can endure, and with good maintenance I'm certain that there is no other engine out there that could take the same kind of driving.

The reason rx8s like to blow up in addition to what was said in this video is that the side seals are an odd shape so part of them gets hotter then the other part which causes premature failure.
Usually when someone tells you that the Apex seals are bad it's usually the side seals atleast with these rx8s

thank for all the tips about RX
i have RX8 2005 se3p i think its 1st gen. i get the rx for very low price all stock and have
145,000 kilometers on clock its my 1st time on rotary engine the only issue is long start
my question is it worth the to spend or start for upgrading the engine? like sohn adapter exhaust
filters and every thing.! or its too late for that and run the RX till end of it...
i get the car just for fun and try the rotary! i have everyday car
if i start to spend the money it will very expensive specially here in japan
the car registration and road tax is very expensive so if you tell me is it worth to spend money
i will do i trust you..
thank you and sorry for my bad english

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You're welcome man :) Yes that is the first gen rx8. My suggestion would be to make a compression test, so you know how long the engine will last. I made a video on that topic that you can do at home for under 30$. There you will also see a chart that will tell you what the result means. If the compression is good, i would suggest to upgrade your engine starter, to a 2kw or 2.2kw one, like i did in this video th-cam.com/video/vgIhxFU-nGg/w-d-xo.html
If the compression is not good, i wouldn't suggest investing on mods, but rather do a rebuild. it'll be a bit expensive, but then you'll be able to enjoy the rx8 for many many years and be able to do mods. I hope this helped :)

    1. Heating/Cooling not working properly,
    2. The Airbag light is on and won't switch off no matter what I've tried (the steering wheel had been changed, maybe this has effected it?).
    3. My dipstick and oil cap lid has "cream" on it... (similar to when a piston engine blows a head gasket). I'm told this is just moisture and is normal for a rotary engine... is this true?
