- Its the question everyone has been waiting for, which is faster? A Renaultsport Clio 182 or the 197. There's only one way to find out and that's through a drag race!
Mr Adam Christo is a British racing driver, who won the 2008 British Formula Renault Championship, also won the 2009 Star Mazda Championship who is now Mercedes AMG Driver.
It's safe to say that we have a pretty handy driver today, and he has brought down his personal Renaultsport Clio 197.

The Daddy is the Clio 2 RS phase1 172cv of 2000. Try a such easy drag-race in right line vs it with a Clio 2 RS 182 and we'll see...
that launch was epic no automtic shifts no launch control just pure pedal to the metal and wheel spin and the reaching the rpm limiter i love it, that's what brought to the petrolhead world and that's what will keep me in and not some fancy 800+hp launch control super high tech diff ....

@@alexwelsh5943 No I've got a few things on it, but only because it needed replacing or to improve track wear, i've got a toyosport manifold on it, as the previous one cracked, some lowered springs, then the Ferodo Racing pads from the Renault Clio championship which last about 5x longer that the originals and some front camber adjustment to get a few more miles out the front tyres, as I was going through 1 set of front tyres a day at one point. It don't want to put track tyres on it as it defeats the purpose of some of the training I do, and dual control for when I, teaching.

I've never seen the motorways and roads as quiet. From a delivering point of view it's awesome but we also have to keep in mind of the present danger.

I had a Clio 172 for a year and swapped it for a 197 F1 edition.... 172 definitely felt quicker all the way through the whole rev range

Was my first proper hot hatch the 182. Since then I have been really fortunate and owned most of the worlds greatest sports and hypercars. But you know what, I have never forgotten how epic that little lightweight Clio was.

I've thought about it a few times, but in the end I only really use it for teaching the weight transfers techniques of going faster around race track, so the data comparison is from my base time lap set during that day. She's more of a work horse and abused every time its on track.

I’m a big fan of fast Renaults. Started out with 5 GT Turbos and a ph1 19 16v Chamade.
Dave Spooney I always wanted a Renault 5 GT turbo as a kid, quarter mile King those things.

I’ve had a few Renaultsport cars they’re amazing. Recently had a Clio 200, Megane RS 275 Trophy, then a 275 Trophy R, and now a Clio 172 Cup. The cup is a seriously rapid car even compared to the more powerful variants. It’s probably not far off Megane in terms of performance it really is rapid especially across country roads. Defo a car not to be underestimated 💪🏼🚙💨

Yo sid i kmow this is off topic from your video but what racing sim game do you use the most with your steering wheel.
After recently purchasing a MK3 RS 200 and owning a 182 previously there really isn't much noticeable difference in power.. The newer shape seems to handle soo much better, And it seem's to have much better lower down power as well.. I haven't driven a 197.. But to be gapped that badly is strange considering it has more HP and an extra gear.. Something doesn't seem right to me!? Obviously the 182 is lighter but surely the extra bit of weight cant make that much of a difference considering the 197 has the extra HP.. half the 182's don't even dyno at 182hp either.. Especially with that kind of mileage , Seem's strange to gap 3 car lengths to me!? Also I used to get beaten by 172's in my 182.. Almost like it's pot luck with what Clio you buy..

I've had six 182's, one 172, a stock 197 and a Mégane Engined 197... The 197 has around 185bhp from stock... Not alot of people know that lol.
I think many will know no surprise in that, basically the same engine as 182 so 185 hp is healthy as quoted, the toyota gt86 is quoted at 200 hp and only makes about 170 hp. Megane engined 197.. surely a mk1 Megane ?
@@tedt7991 yes but unfortunately alot of people assume 197 means 197 bhp. Yes it was am R26 engine with an R26 gearbox. Was crap tbh.

They're a useful bit of kit. I've used it a lot recently, its strong too. can hold two proper cameras on there no problem.

Always been a fan of the 197, just a shame about the gearbox selector issues!
I've had a gear box in both of my training car, but only because they both get completely abused on track.

Love it. That 182 will be a classic. Would love to see a fabia vrs (derv, ew) in a drag race against cars like these. Very different kind of car but all the forums reckon their mid range grunt is impressive.
Would get smoked off the line, heavy and too many gearchanges. Would do well in a rolling race though.

It’s a place called Bruntingthorp, it’s slowly being turned into a huge carpark sadly, but I use it for training all my clients, there’s a layout I use with trail braking corner and opening radius’.
Nice video :) we'd like to see rolling races too to avoid the differences at the start (good or bad start)

I had a red 172 back in 2002.
Magna Exhaust and KN. Poly bush, eibach springs and koni dampers. Handling Was on rails and quick car back then. Am still a fan too

Maybe this Milltek exhaust Sid's 182 has? Over 100mph the engine is fighting against aero drag mostly, not with weight, so 197 should at least start to catch up.

lastexile1187 I know but the 197 is 15 bhp more and on paper is faster. The 182 also has 166 k on the clock so for it to still be running it’s stock power would also be a miracle
david gearing “on paper”, exactly. renault wouldve had to claim the newer car was faster else it wouldve affected sales. 15hp isnt anywhere near enough to counteract the weight increase of over 100kg. Its that simple.

A phase 1 172 (blob eye shape) would probably be faster still. It is all down to the weight but the newer cars bring superior chassis and braking tech

Don't forget, a lot of clio 3 rs.1 as less hp than 197cv 50% of the time

197cv= 181cv in a dyno
Had a Clio 197 was only 181bhp on the dyno at ktec racing then had it mapped and it went up to 200bhp with mods
