How to Split a Philodendron

  • Selloum Philodendron have the best leaves. Look at that definition! Yearly, I have large philodendrons flanking my front door and they grow crazy fast. Recently, I split and replanted them like I do every season.

    ------------------------------
Over time, Selloum Philodendron become overgrown with large, trunk-like stems. Separating the multiple plants that form and cutting back some of the roots stimulates new fresh growth for the year.
Do not worry about being too aggressive. I often cut off most of the leaves and completely open up the root ball.
    - Find the various individual plants at the root ball and pull them apart.
    - Choose which ones to re-pot.
    - Pot with at least 75% fresh, good-quality potting soil.
Soon enough, new leaves will grow!

I have a plant like this - it is 40 years old . My mom had it for a couple of years and gave it to me when my son was 2 - he will be 40 this year. We have been dragging inside in the winter and outside in the summer for years. I think it may be at end of life - the leaves are brown but I am going to trim it up really well and repot in several pots.

About 10 years ago, we unwound the air roots and they were over 20 feet long. This is the hardiest plant I have ever seen!! Next summer, I will get the courage to re-root it. Something about cutting it scares me because it is so pretty and continues to unfurl beautiful leaves!!

Me too! I’ve been desperately waiting for spring to come so it doesn’t freaking die. I’m also going to try to make more than one but if it was only one good plant I’d be happy with that alone. It got way too close to death from a frost and I thought I was going to lose it completely but it hung out and it’s pushed out a handful of new leaves but they’re struggling because I also think it’s freaking infested with fungus gnats or god knows what else. Hopefully not; but I will say, I did not expect this to be the advice because this is basically what happened after the frost and I was losing my mind every time one of those huge stalks just popped off 😂 but it’s march and we’ve made it thru the worst of winter I think?? Haha but I’m super excited to get this root bound to filth goddess plant out and into a new home 😂

That looks so much better than my mom’s plant had 6000 aerial roots which when she gave it to me, it only had two leaves, so I chose to re-bury all the aerial roots because I thought they were the kind that go in the soil not climbing in attaching to trees I split it in half and put it into pops one for me and one for my sister, so we would each have a part of moms plant
The big thing she had was a bow window in the living room and she would set the plants that like a lot of sunlight they didn’t get 100% sunlight because it was a crabapple tree in front of the window. For years, it was beautiful, but she never ever reported it and never ever change the soil.

I have a MONSTROUS philodendron, about seven feet tall, in the ground (I live in Florida). It has gotten so huge it is blocking the walking path (the largest leaves are almost 3 FEET across). I want to cut part of it off - the primary trunk about 12" in diameter and it has branched into two smaller ones, one about 6" in diameter and the other about 7". The 7" one is the one blocking the path. I want to cut it off and transplant it, but I can't find any information about how to do it with such a large plant. Obviously I can't propogate in water, nor can I dig up the whole thing and properly separate it. Is it possible to cut through the 7" trunk and just put it in a hole in the ground ? If so, what type of soil should I give it, and will it need peat moss for acidity?

I have a concern with shocking the plant.
From my own experiences, if im repotting with the same dirt without pulling out or pruning the roots and just adding new medium in the new pot, my chances without shocking the plant 100 percent success.
    But what you just demonstrated......😶‍🌫️

I live in eastern Iraq, the temperature reaches 49 degrees
    He likes to live outdoor
Should I put it outside in the shade?
    Or indoor ?
And why his leaves rather small?
I mean the plant that I own?
