  • Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum are great house plants! But I have certainly made my fair share of mistakes while growing them, which has allowed me to really get to know this plant and how to best take care of it!
    In this video I talk about my journey with my Thaumatophyllum and how listening to the plant lead me to truly understand this green beauty!!
    These plants were formerly known as Tree Philodendron / Philodendron Hope / Philodendron Selloum / Philodendron Bipinnatifidum... so many names! But it was reclassified a few years ago as a Thaumatophyllum.

    One of these beautiful babies just joined my plant family and I am so excited! I've always wanted a large plant and your two videos on the care and troubleshooting has been enormously helpful! I was a bit nervous that caring for such a large plant would be difficult but you've put my mind at ease. Also, I didn't realize they could get so huge! I'm very excited for my new plant baby to grow and to propagate her to share with friends! Thanks for sharing your experience!

    If your plant was too cold it would get dark spots (kind of black), not like yours. The brown spots are from fungus, because the plant was probably cold + wet, so it appeared. Glad it recovered.

    Could you tell me how to make your 20% alcohol solution for cleaning plant leaves? Is this good for any plant?

    • @mindtheleaves9914
      @mindtheleaves9914  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems to work well on all plants as long as it is just wiped in the leaves. To make the solution, it depends on what percentage of alcohol you have. But say you have 99% you would just mix one part iso alcohol with 4 parts water or use the measurements and add 200ml of iso alcohol to 800ml water.

    • @mindtheleaves9914

      It needs sunlight, just not direct sunlight (where the Sundays are directly hitting the plant, it likes soft ambient light). Although it loves morning sun, so an east window is perfect, but I keep mine in a north window were it gets very little direct sunlight other than in the summer.

      @@janettelstevenson oh that's great! Multiple plants make it easy to propagate. You basically just need to pull the plants out of the pot and take the babies from the mother plant. Just cut them as close to the mother plant as you can. You may need a sharp knife. If will feel drastic but one the babies are separated, just put them into their own pots with well draining soil. They might need some support at first, them just wait for them to root up and you are good to go. Feel free to send me your video on Instagram or if there is a link.

    • @mindtheleaves9914
      @mindtheleaves9914  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! Yes, the Xanadu is a smaller more compact grower. The biggest difference I see between between the Xanadu and the bipinnatifidum is the leaves. The Xanadu has a more lance shaped leaves that still have lobes but they are far less pronounced than you see on mine here. You can see how wide the leaves on mine get. The Xanadu is narrower and less deeply cut with a tighter growth habit. It can be hard to tell them apart when they are young but they grow fast!

    • @mindtheleaves9914
      @mindtheleaves9914  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! If you just pop the leaves off like I did in this video, then you can't repot them, although they do look great in a vase and will last a long time. It can actually be really difficult to propagate this plant from cutting because you need a bunch of the stem and an aerial root. If you want to propagate it, it's best to take an offshoot (or pup) and repot it. They are epiphytes, so they use all of those aerial roots to cling to and climb tall trees. When it's in a pot they do tend to go a little wild! Especially if it's a big plant. But I think you did the right thing but just repotting it.

    • @mindtheleaves9914
