I got mine about 9 months ago. It was a baby and had 4 stems with a nice hand size leaves. It’s not tripled in size and there are 9 stems with leaves some bigger than my face!! I love this plant :)
There is a huge one in my mom's backyard that has been ignored. It shot off another side plant and I need to do something to this giant! Never knew it could grow inside. I will look at seeing about propagating before I cut the twin.
This video will be a lot of help to me. I got a huge Hope Philodendron over a decade ago and have managed to keep it alive through hot summers, dry winters and root rot. I added some potting soil last summer and have been fighting for its life ever since. I'm going to use your technique for getting rid of the old soil next summer and hope it does the trick. Thanks for the demonstration. One minor criticism: it sounds like you end the word 'philodendron' with an em sound in the video. The name comes from 2 Greek words, philo for love and dendron for tree. Please put the en sound on the end of the name in future videos. Thanks.
There is literally five of these growing on some old pine tree logs uphill from my house and they are huge. There is also one growing on an old wooden ladder in the yard. Never knew these were in demand like that. And they aren't growing in soil. Just attached to the logs and ladder amazing. I'm in the caribbean btw.
I got a cutting from my aunts very old plant a year ago, i have had to repot it THREE times in the last year, it has a huge burst of growth every time I repot it, then it stops growing and looks sad once the roots fill the pot so much that it dries out too fast. About to repot from a ten inch pot to a 14 inch pot... I am going to give it a top dressing too so it stays moist longer. Your plant is going to love the repotting!
They do love fresh soil! I have had many others before and they were like that. This one just kept growing like crazy without repotting so i let it go to see how long it would stay happy... about 3 years!... which is bad, should repot our plants far more often, but i was just curious. lol... mine already has a new leaf shooting out and it has only been a week since i repotted it. Awesome plants!
Hi , l got a philodendron bipenifiden 4 months ago. It gave only one leaf and now some leaves are showing discolouration. Would you please comment? Thx
Gorgeous plant!! I have to admit that, after watching one of your older videos, I went out to our driveway and took a bunch of cutting from a philodendron plant the previous owner planted in the narrow strip of ground next to the driveway. Each segment of the philo seemed to grow roots. Great video! Two thumbs up and now following you on Instagram!
Aww, thats great! I love hearing when people are playing with their plants! They take to dividing and repotting very well, youare going to have some nice plants in no time!
Victoria Greenroyd I have a inherited one. I just lop off the stem and pot it as a cutting. Sometimes the stem doesn't make it though. It grows arial roots that makes this a little easier. I'm up to three now but I've given a lot of them away as gifts over the years.
I inherited a 32 year old Philodendron bipinnatifidum that has been in the same pot the whole time. Gentle pruning and Milorganite made the green color POP. It’s doing great. Be prepared for a commitment with this plant but it’s super easy to care for.
It looks like there are some offsets at 5:26, near the base. Maybe seperate those, otherwise I would think to do a cane cutting. Cut about 6 inches below the top of the plant, then divide this piece in two. The parent plant will branch and grow new shoots while the cuttings will root.
I have one which is probably 40 years old. The stem was at least 2 feet. I cut the stem into thirds last year and replanted them into separate pots. The leaves ended up falling off, but after establishing roots, now I have three smallerish plants!
I just got a massive philodendron selloum from an elderly lady for $5! It’s been around for three generations, crazy right?! She’s in a huge pot and I think she has a lot of dead roots. What’s the best way to repot such a huge beast!? 😂😂 I wish I could post pictures. It’s huge!!
Hello! I would suggest unpotting the plant and trimming out the dead roots and repotting it into some fresh soil that drains well but holds onto some moisture. Keeping it well watered after the repot will get it off to a good start and adding a starter fertilizer will help also. :)
My favorite but, still have not found new ones. I had so many for yrs. Hard to kill them. Grow so big & beautiful. Mine loved moisture, had them in a room that had a dryer in it. Bought mine from CA on vacation. Now can't find more.
I absolutely agree, they are among the best house plants in my opinion...aside from the massive sizes they can reach. Have you tried lowes and home depot? They usually get them in fairly frequently, but there is a tropical plant drought happening with the nursery biz so maybe they aren't as common this year.
That's crazy! Several weeks ago i was at lowes or home depot, i don't remember which, and they had 4 pallets full of them, but they were tiny little guys in 3 gallon pots. It's always when we want to find something that we can't! I know bc of the hurricane and cold in Florida last winter that there is a supply issue with a lot of tropicals, and probably wont be back to normal for a few years, but i figured the philodendrons would be the plants that the growers would be pushing out like crazy to compensate. Weird!
Tropical Plant Party I live in MA not many if them around but, when U come across them I buy a lot. Tiny now maybe but, hugh later. Very popular in FL as I've seen. I have a friend in FL maybe, better luck if they can buy & ship to me.
I just got a Licuala aurantiaca seedling, which makes my second palm for this summer, which is my limit, I don't have a lot of room for everything in the winter . maybe someday I'll have a huge greenhouse

As long as you cut a portion that has stem and root tissue, they should do ok for you. They will not grow from just leaves though, and propagate best when you can dig up an entire piece that has some roots on it. 😊
@@TropicalPlantParty I have that big round part that comes out of the ground but it's all so packed in I am afraid if I dig in I will harm the rest of the plant. I will get as low as I can . But I guess I need to wait till spring
I just purchased a philodendron selloum with 5 curvy trunks (nearly one inch diameter each). Can I stake them to a pole covered in coconut fiber? Is this plant a climber like Monstera delicosia?
Hey, thank you for sharing those informations! I have a question, maybe you can help? I have mine for about one year, it's really been through hell but is starting to grow new leaf and get better, but middle trunk lost all of his leaves and when it tries to push out a new one, it gets yellow and brownish real quick. I feel like I haven't been watering too much, less then once a week but throughly, should I repot it and check the roots? Thannkkks
How much of each ingredient did you add to your soil mixture? I have a small philodendron that will need to be repotted soon and want to make sure it has an optimum growing medium.
I got one plant with all the bigger and thicker stems. Just like yours, they lean down quite a bit... Won't they break themselves? Do I need to provide some support for them?
I bought one yesterday (impulsive purchase 😂) and I'm so excited but also very nervous haha i live in a low light apartment with a North facing window. Do you think that is enough light?
I have this plant indoors and I love it but recently the new growth is a pale green and some of the older leaves are turning pale as well what do you think is causing this? It's still growing like crazy and it's Winter here in Canada. I've already reported it twice and I've had it for 2 years. Maybe it is root bound and needs to repotted in a bigger pot?
I have one of these in my yard in Santa Cruz CA. It's about 7 feet tall now and probably 10 feet wide. I'm trying to propagate it by cutting off pieces that have a lot of roots and leaves
Great tutorial. Thank you! Can you advise on how to break a leaf off from bottom of stem (or another portion of plant you recommend) and repot it? I’m trying to repot the stem and re-grow my now deceased moms philodendron. The stems have been in water for two days now. I’m waiting for roots to grow. Can you advise on how to make it grow and thrive?
Hi Donna! Is it a stem-leaf cutting, or an actual cutting of the main plant stem, like the trunk of the plant? Their leaves do not root very well, so it's best to get a piece that has some of the main plant stem on it.
Tonight i accidently broke the large thick stalk in half on my split leave philodrun. Im heart broken because I've had my plant since it wasa baby. Its now over 20+ years old. Is there anyway to save my baby? I put it together and wrapped it with bandage and tape. I am at loss. Will it die?? This plant is really special. :'(
@@TropicalPlantParty Sorry if I miss any infos. Mine has big leaves. Super big but I've just noticed that two of the biggest leaves turning thin and light green. Do you have any idea? Tips? Please? Thank you so much
I bought a house with several of these Philodendron Bipinnatifidum growing behind the pool. I live in Florida and they seem to do pretty well. A couple of them have trunks 7 to 8' tall, Since they are so large can I cut the trunk back ? and would they continue to grow from that trunk? Almost all of them are multi trunked, do I cut back the largest at the base at the base and will the others grow? I have pictures if that helps
I planted mine outside but seems to have died off the leaves. Is this okay? I want to plant it deeper just not sure if it's because of the winter months?
Hi! Love your vids!! I live in a pretty hot area and was wondering if you could suggest some philo’s that could handle the heat and be under a tree for partial shade??
Hi, If my Philodendron B turns brown then the leaves go soggy, does that mean that there is not enough drainage in my pot? I have it sitting in a pot with only one drainage hole.
I have this.. but its been in the same 10in pot for 3yrs. However, it looks nothing like yours and its not half that size.. I'm thinking about changing the pot to terra cotta and a smaller pot...what do you suggest?
My Selloum cries ( drops of water drips from leaves) Is that suppose to happen? I just bought it a month ago and it keeps getting new leaves. I love it but now it’s getting to big for my room!
Have you ever had thrips on yours? I bought a 14 inch pot last summer and me not realizing it was loaded with thrips....ughhhh. Me trying to wash it off all dirt and foliage and spraying many times, eventually most of the plant has died. The leftovers of new shoots fits in a 6" pot. Unimpressed by all this but I love the plant
Hi! I have a philodendron sollioum that my friend gave me a few years ago. It is old and quite large, maybe four feet wide. It likes to spread out all over my floor but does not like to grow upwards. Is it possible to train these to grow upwards? I've read that it isn't but I was curious what your opinion was. Thanks!
Hi david! They are considered non-climbing philodendrons, and typically grow a trunk like stem which supports the plant. I do feel like I've seen pictures of them climbing though. Perhaps it was just the angles the pictures were taken at? Typically indoors if they are falling and crawling you can just put a sturdy stake in the pot and tie them up to it.
I just transplanted my plant. Watered plant and let it drain. The next day a few leaves actually looked overwatered and obviously were waterlogged. Is that normal? The rest of the plant looks super healthy. Moved it to a sunnier room for the day, thinking that the soil should dry out somewhat. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks.
I have one of these little guys and his stems are supper saggy. Always have been. He’s healthy and been this way since I got him 4 or so years ago. Is this normal? I know I’m larger ones the stems are thicker therefore they stand more erect. A friend mentioned it the other day and I got worried I’ve been doing something wrong.
If it's growing well for you and it has been for years then you're not doing anything wrong. If it ain't broke don't fix it! ... the longer stems is usually just the plant reaching for light. Increasing the light can help out with that.
I have one that I've had about 38 years. The trunk is getting too tall and I've been thinking of cutting it off and rerooting it. Do you know if that will work?
I have a huge one as well. Trunk probably 3-4 ft tall. Was think about cutting it off as well and trying to retool. It has lots of areal roots. Did you have any luck?
I watched a video where they farmed them. They literally had them planted in thick plastic bag about 2 -3 gallon size with lots of bark and miss and some soil. Then they would cut the top off just below the roots below lime the growth node leaving some aerial roots also they would then plant that in same type of bag ,then re-pot what was left below where they cut and it would grow new plant and plant cutting would grow just fine. I thought it was Awesome !! . I think I was called Happy farmers on TH-cam "maybe " it was happy something . Mine is about 8x5ft. Planted in the ground outside in Close to Dallas Texas just south of there. Growing like crazy full sun all day. I just mulch it heavily in the winter. Good luck. I took a pup off of mine today.
I went travelling a few months and the person caring for my plants drowned them 😭 My philodendron is amongst those most affected 😢 How can I save her?? 😢
Can't find comment area....When I get your you tube message for new video... and go straight to your video from notice, there seems to be no place to put a comment all I can do is like....if I google search the same video...hit video and pull it up there is a comment space...is it just me?

Hi! I just purchased this one on clearance (2 gallon pot)for $2 at Lowe's. The stems are seriously droopy. I had to repot it because there was some root rot which I was able to remove and there were winged ants and some worms in the pot...eeww. Soaked it, removed all dead leaves, rotted roots and had to cut back the roots as well. Lost 2 of the babies. Finally got it all cleaned, in another pot and the stems are so droopy they just lay down(had to stake it in 3 spots). Since this is not a climber will the stems ever get strong enough to stand alone or will I need to wait until it grows a trunk for it to be strong enough? TIA for your input😊
Whoa that plant has really put you through it! What a mess! Sounds like you did a great job with staying on the issues and fixing it up. They should be able to support their leaves at any size. Usually droopy foliage is a sign of low light and/or over watering. Once they've drooped they might not stand back up, but all of the new foliage should do just fine. 🙂
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks for the info. Yes, got quite a workout for $2😜 I hope it grows quickly. There are 7 really big stems and beautiful leaves. Sad they won't stand alone. Hopefully it grows quickly. Maybe I'll buy or make a trellis to hold it up in the meantime. I don't know if my skinny bamboo stakes will hold the weight that long.🤔 Either way...it was $2 if it works, great if not oh well. There will always be another rescue plant at Lowes😉! Love your channel by the way💚🌱
Too funny. I also just picked up one for a buck at Lowe’s. I named him Bob (after the Lowe’s employee who marked it down). It’s in bad shape but I’m hopeful I can revive it after I do an insect inspection, pruning and repot it. It should be noted this plant is poisonous to both people and animals when ingested and its a ski. irritant. It’s amazing the extreme and constant lack of plant care at the many Lowes Garden Centers in Long Island NY... but thats a whole other story.
@@kellykelly-fp1jg Nice! Good luck with Bob..lol. Sadly, mine started to rapidly decline despite my care and love. I put it outside hoping someone would have better luck. Within 30 minutes it disappeared. Hope it found a good home and thrives there. 💚🌱
🌴🌵💚 Thanks for sharing about the website that helps with the pronunciationsons of the plants names. I was wanting an app for the plants that will help alot!
@@TropicalPlantParty What was the name of the website again? It was not clear sound in the video. Thanks. I heard botanical garden webdite, is that right?
I recently bought one from my local grocery store and had the same problem. As he said, this happens when the soil is too wet... it likely has fungus. Sprinkle some cinnamon on the leaves and soil. Let the soil dry out. I let the soil dry out and treated with Bonnide anti fungal spray. I continue to allow it to dry in between watering. I water once per week (depending on soil dryness). It’s recovered nicely.
I repotted a huge split leaf and today she’s drooping. She’s huge but dropping wasn’t what she did before. We split her 3 ways , she was very large! I need help, I inherited her and I do love her but I don’t know what to do. It was about 45 degrees outside last night, is that bad? I was told no. I have put her back inside for now. I watered her today too.
This year has been odd, likely because of the hurricane and cold in florida, a lot of common plants are not out at the nurseries like they usually are. I have had this one for years, but lowes and home depot usually has them, or they used to i should say. Next year should hopefully be better. Fingers crossed!
I have read* online that i has poisonous sap have you experienced something regarding with the sap? I got one of these recently so I want to know more about it. Thanks! :)
Hi there! May I ask if you've experienced yellowing tips on your Philodendron? If so, what would you attribute it to? I'm known to severely underwater plants and I wonder if that could be the cause of my yellowing tips and sometimes whole leaves? Thank you so much for the video and help! :)
Timely video since I just bought one. I looked up yellowing leaves, and sure enough it is severely root bound, so I will be re-potting. If you found a solution please post.
i am in serious need of help.... i just bought my plant from home depot (she was calling out to me and i had to have her). I hope i researched correctly as i keep coming up with Philodendron selloum AKA hope plant. Any way I realized 2 days later that some of the leaves were wet ( i did not spray them) and then over the next day or two that one leaf was very mushy and "leaking water" !!! I am so scared that she wont make it. can some body PLEASE help?!
putting stones at the bottom of the pot doesnt help water drain through, the potting mix will still wick up and become saturated but the rocks will lift that saturated zone higher up the pot, some scientific name for i cant remember
No TH-camr show, no fuss, no muss and unnecessary blabla. Just direct to the point. I loved it!

Hi Donna! Is it a stem-leaf cutting, or an actual cutting of the main plant stem, like the trunk of the plant? Their leaves do not root very well, so it's best to get a piece that has some of the main plant stem on it.
Tropical Plant Party oh nooo😩😩😩 I pulled the leaf off of the base of the stem, not the root. Is there anything I can do to make it root??
@@TropicalPlantParty can u pl help me by telling the exact way of propagation
@@Donna-Marie_Reid were you ever able to propergate the leaf stem?
I love your channel. Great content
What a beauty ❤
Tonight i accidently broke the large thick stalk in half on my split leave philodrun. Im heart broken because I've had my plant since it wasa baby. Its now over 20+ years old. Is there anyway to save my baby? I put it together and wrapped it with bandage and tape. I am at loss. Will it die?? This plant is really special. :'(
Are Bipennatifedum, and selloum one and the same?
Yes they are the same plant. 😊
Thanks for sharing! Do you have tips for caring Alocasia polly? Mine has got yellowish leaves. Thank you
hello! I do, I actually did a whole video on the plant just a couple of weeks ago, check it out! :)
In situ, here in Brasil they are giants and majestic, soon i will post a video. The correct pronunciation is in LATIN, not aglicized.
I've got a plant.loves my sunny room
Whoops. We got one of these after a family member's funeral...in 2010. I have never repotted it. Didn't know I needed to.
Hi, If my Philodendron B turns brown then the leaves go soggy, does that mean that there is not enough drainage in my pot? I have it sitting in a pot with only one drainage hole.
If they go soggy then that could very well be poor drainage.
You can make additional holes. Also, try to empty the plate, that collects water underneath, regularly.
I have this.. but its been in the same 10in pot for 3yrs. However, it looks nothing like yours and its not half that size.. I'm thinking about changing the pot to terra cotta and a smaller pot...what do you suggest?
I think I need to change the soil mix to a chunky mix...thats why I'm thinking terra cotta pot to keep the soil from being soggy 🤔🤔🤔
Hi..my Philodendron is spotting after i repotted it..any guidance of what the problem could be?
why are there ropes growing out of my plant and what should I do about them?
Hi julie! Those are aerial roots. No need to do anything with them.
Lol
Can you cut them off ?
You can trim them back to your liking.
Excellent tips! Thanks 😊 🙏
Unimpressed by all this but I love the plant
luckily I have never had to deal with thrips, from what I have heard they are terrible!
@@TropicalPlantParty well......I did manage so I think I did ok......at first I didn't know what they were....and I've heard horror stories too
So beautiful ❤❤❤❤
I just transplanted my plant. Watered plant and let it drain. The next day a few leaves actually looked overwatered and obviously were waterlogged. Is that normal? The rest of the plant looks super healthy. Moved it to a sunnier room for the day, thinking that the soil should dry out somewhat. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks.
I wonder how big this is years later
Hey Michael! It's about 4 or 5 feet tall with a nice little "trunk" on it.
So cool of you to reply. Awesome
Can you tell us how to propagate this??
How did you make it grow so many pups?
I have one that I've had about 38 years. The trunk is getting too tall and I've been thinking of cutting it off and rerooting it. Do you know if that will work?
Cheryl Ernst cut it off where you see arial roots and stick it in soil. Don’t over water or you will rot your new plant.
Wow that would be an impressive plant and huge!1
Aaayyyy I live two blocks from the Missouri botanical garden!!!!!
How do you propagate a Selloum?
Very informative! Thank you
I went travelling a few months and the person caring for my plants drowned them 😭 My philodendron is amongst those most affected 😢 How can I save her?? 😢
What is your potting mix ratio of soil to orchid bark to sand and perlite? Wing it? 😄
Can't find comment area....When I get your you tube message for new video... and go straight to your video from notice, there seems to be no place to put a comment all I can do is like....if I google search the same video...hit video and pull it up there is a comment space...is it just me?
Lorell Stoneman, no, me too! Unless someone has already commented... then it shows up.
That's weird! I haven't changed anything as far as settings are concerned, that must just be youtube being glitchy. So sorry for the hassle! I will try to remember to make and pin a comment when i post videos so that the section will hopefully be up. Ugh! Technology!
It helps but it also pronounces a lot of the names in an odd way too.
@@TropicalPlantParty What was the name of the website again? It was not clear sound in the video. Thanks. I heard botanical garden webdite, is that right?
Can you tell me why my plant is getting brown wet like spots
Awesome video. Thanks
Thank you!
We have one of these at my office. Its taken months for me to figure out what it is!
Great video!
thank you, Kim!
Looks great in its new pot :)
Thank you! I think it is much happier too!
My leaves keep getting mushy and turning yellow I have only had it for 4 weeks what is wrong with it, it's inside my house. Help
Hi, Taylor! Is the soil damp or moist? That is usually what they do when are getting too much water. Is the plant getting a good amount of light?
I recently bought one from my local grocery store and had the same problem. As he said, this happens when the soil is too wet... it likely has fungus. Sprinkle some cinnamon on the leaves and soil. Let the soil dry out. I let the soil dry out and treated with Bonnide anti fungal spray. I continue to allow it to dry in between watering. I water once per week (depending on soil dryness). It’s recovered nicely.
Thank you so very much for your reply, The soil is moist and it doesn't get a lot of light.
Overwatered
Can the trunk be cut off and pot the green plant be ok????
Yes cut top below growth node and with some Ariel roots. Plant that ,then the bottom will regrow.
My sister's plant has a flower growing what does that mean.
Yikes my computer is Hal.... as I was saying I have problems finding the awesome plants youfind😞
Thanks! :)
hello! Yes, the sap can be irritating and should not be ingested by people or animals.
Oh. Okay thanks! But it’s okay to put it at your bedside? 😅
I've had one since 1975.
I’m with the other folks who are having problems finding those w

Hi there! May I ask if you've experienced yellowing tips on your Philodendron? If so, what would you attribute it to? I'm known to severely underwater plants and I wonder if that could be the cause of my yellowing tips and sometimes whole leaves? Thank you so much for the video and help! :)
Yellow leaves means the plant needs iron
SOunds like root rot to me.
Now i want to Buy a philodendron
Go for it! They are the best!
putting stones at the bottom of the pot doesnt help water drain through, the potting mix will still wick up and become saturated but the rocks will lift that saturated zone higher up the pot, some scientific name for i cant remember
I found mines at steins garden
Paano po pagdidilig ng selloum?
Yaman sahod po ba ang tawag dyan
Does this plant flower?
Yes it does. The flower is similar to a flower on an alocasia, almost like a calla lily but not as open or decorative.
Tropical Brazil??
i have one like this..thnks
