USB powered SVBONY Dew Heater Review and How to Connect to the ASIAIRPro

- This is my review and thoughts on the SVBONY dew heater strap. Most of my nights you can get away without using one but there are those nights where dew gets on everything and it will ruin all your images. Here are my thoughts on how well this product works as well as some thoughts on the competing ones out there. I think this is a great product. So much that I now have four of them. And for those of you using the now very popular ASIAIR Pro I would advise against using the use outlets on it and rather that you should buy a USB to DC converter and run them that way. This will save you a precious USB port so you can run other necessary items.
Here is a link to the USB to DC connector. If the link breaks let me know and I can update it.

Here is the USB female to male DC plug I use to go from USB to the ASIAIR Pro or Plus

Thanks for the info! Just mentioning to a dealer in 🇨🇦 yesterday about shorter length dew heaters
for guide scopes. Hope the manufacturers are listening. :)
Thank you! I can sander and shorten cables but I know 99% of those out there do not want to do that lol.
Thanks ! I was about to buy the black one but you point me to the right direction and go with the orange stripe ! clear skies ;-)
Glad I could help! Enjoy astrophotography. It is fun and challenging.
Wow man, I kinda want the story about the melting of the Protage. Both straps I use are those, and they've been chugging along great the past few years. But I think you may have sold me on getting the Svbony ones (since I have the AAP as well), I need a set that stays with the telescope and a set that stays in the camera bag in case I can do a time lapse when out camping. Does the ASI Air have any smarts working with those straps if the ambient temperature is close to the dew point to where they may/may not be needed?
If you watch my video here I gave more detail on it. th-cam.com/video/tvWP1auH8Ak/w-d-xo.html
And some pictures.
At current times there are no smarts in the ASIAIR for it to regulate dew heaters power. But that would be really cool if they did implement that. Might be something I suggest to them next time they ask for feedback.
Is there any way to run one of the SVBONY USB dew heaters with the USB connector to something like a Pegasus controller which uses an RCA type connector. I can't find any good way to go from a female USB to an RCA type plug. As a side note, do you maybe have a link to the female USB to DC connector you show at about the 4:40 mark? Great video and thanks for talking about the SVBONY strap. They are one of the few models you can even find anymore. If you know of a better controller that might work with one of them rather than the Pegasus box that would be great.
Well I would recommend the ASIAIR over the pegasus only because I have never used a Pegasus. Here is a link and I put a link in the description of the video now to for others to find.

Aren't the Svbony dew heater straps supposed to be powered with 5vdc? Wouldn't the 12vdc out of the ASIAIR Plus fry the dew heater straps and possibly damage your ASIAIR? I would love to be able to do this since I have an ASIAIR Plus and usb powered dew heater straps. I could reduce the gear on my mount.
This is a common question. The air can now be set to exact voltages in the software. So reaching 5v is easy.
@DERELI ASTROSelect dew heater option and reduce the power till it is 5v.
@@TheNarrowbandChannel Do you mean go to the power output settings for the channel you have chosen for your Dew Heater and reduce it to 40% because 5VDC is about 41.6% of 12VDC? Sorry for my ignorance.
@@mr.harris8185 Yes. Also I have run mine well over 5v. The plugs have no chips in them, they are just connectors soon different than a DC plug.
What kind of power consumption were you getting with these strips aka... how long on one of those battery packs you showed?
The USB voltage 2A plug is interesting vs the old phono plug style. Likely the old companies don't care to re-engineer the product so it stays backwards compatible for their 12v based system.
Also, you mentioned the 22awg wire of the Svbony... in normal long term usage does the wire warm up... I was thinking 22 is probably still a bit thin gauge to use for a dew system. What's the coldest conditions it's been used with as I think the thin wire would be a problem in really cold climates?
Even with the lower gage wire fo the Protags the wire in the cords never gets hot. I think they put out plenty of heat though. I typically can heat two scopes and a guid scope at 30% power. So there is plenty of capacity left for colder weather.
The power pack last all night and then some. I think about 40% left after 8-9 hrs, and that is also running the tracker.
I have always put the Protage dew heater on the lens hood and it has worked great for 3 years (mine has never gotten hot, only warm). I use some gafting tale to keep it from slipping back. That way I have access to my focus and zoom rings and don't worry about the possibility of melting my lens ;-) I would love to know the situation that melted your lens. Did you use high power source?
Saw your ink below to the melt down. Yikes.
Yes so typical power consumption for that dew heater was 5v 2.1 amps and I had 12v 5amps running though it to melt it. The SVBONY seams to be made of better stuff though. The wires are heavier gage too.
Can you share how to proper setup the asiair with the dc-to-usb-female cable? why did it melt the first time?
At 4:42 its covered in the video.
Nice video! I am also about to order Svbony dew heater. How about power them up with AAP usb port? Is it going to drain too much amp from AAP? Since I try to keep wires neat.
The AAP has plenty of power. I usually set the AAP to about 20% for my dew heaters. When I have three attached to one outlet on the AAP I set it to 30% for summer use. Winter time I can set it much lower at 10%
@@TheNarrowbandChannel thank you for the information. I will try it out when I get them.
I don't believe they make this model any more. They show two models with different lengths now. Are they stretchy like this?
No idea. I have not had to buy a dew strap n a while. Might have too soon though.
I'd just try adding a piece of velcro if the heaters a little short.
That is a good life hack :)
you can coil them over if they are too long
Yes I actually wind them around the scope or lens if they are to long and they often are. I might shorten them eventually.
