I build one myself and it works pretty decently. Used a 24v (180w) car heater from Amazon, cut the cable and replaced the ends with connectors. Then I connected these to the positive and negative terminals of a cheap 20v 2Ah drill battery from Action (probably similar to the Aldi one). It works for about 15 minutes per battery. I use it to quickly warm up the car when camping in colder weather and it does a decent job at that :)
So to have an approximate idea (a rule of thumb method) calculate the room volume in cubic meters, then divide by 20 to get the heat required in kilowatts. So a room that measures 10 meters in length, 5 meters in width, and 2 meters high will require approximately 5 kilowatts of heat.
Yeah that’s why I did it 😂 seriously though heating space takes a HUGE amount of energy, that energy has to come from somewhere whilst being safe, otherwise you could just have a radioisotope strapped to your car!
I was wondering why there was no such thing as a battery powered heater. I managed to find cordless heaters but they were mains direct connected, duh. Big Clive hasn’t done one yet. Canadian Prepper (both on TH-cam) is epic with solar powered battery systems. Great video, thanks for taking your time putting this together. 💯👍
Great video. I'm a shift-worker forklift driver by profession and the temp drops down to 4-5C during the winter nights. I'm building something similar to run intermittently with the plastic rain curtains down to make things a little more comfortable.
I have two of the “useless” products you listed and they work well in my truck. One keeps the windshield clear and one heats the cab (road pro). One is wired direct to the battery. It takes the edge off for sure.
@@supremekingjesus425Yeah, wire it directly and put a fuse on it. Since I wrote this the road pro died. I opened it up and bypassed all it’s circuits and it’s better than ever. Don’t use a 12v port, mine melted.
@@camposvazquez Ah poo I don't have it anymore. But you just need some large wire and a fuse to run from the battery to the cab. If you run the heaters off the 12v plug how the amazon images show it will melt your trucks wiring harness together. Ask me how I know. Anyway, run that cable safely, mount them to the dash and heat away. I'm not sure it's going to make any difference at all in a 21' RV. It just helped take the cold edge off in a small truck cab.
@@mixmasterwillyd9959 thank you.. my goal was to run 2 at a time... I 12 volt marine heater with the same wattage costs $600... I'd rather heed your suggestions and wire it as you did... Thank you... You saved me almost $500....$500 I don't have
I’ve been looking for this heater for many years. I’m a delivery driver and I’m suffering the cold. Certain hours of the day, I don’t feel my feet at all.
I was excited to find your video as i have been looking for a portable non gas no diesel heater for such a long time. But there's no way I could diy one.
I reckon you would need around 400 to 500w of solar just to keep the battery charged enough to use it, 20amps will drain a 110amp hour leisure battery in about 3 hours and take a lot longer to recharge battery. Nice little hester for the twizzy though.
A car battery has the power to start motor vehicles for 2-4 years. Unfortunately and ironically, this powerful battery couldn't power a heater (directly, not through a motor vehicle's electrical system) to heat a small room?
it definitely can, but it' best you use the battery only for the heater and nothing else which means you'll have to purchase one. If you wire it to your car's battery you could run the heater fora few mins to an hour or more depending on your car battery's performance and specs but remember everytime you run it without the engine on you are draining your battery very quickly.
Amazing! Keep that going! I was trying to get my garage heated from using a small heater exactly like that one and unfortunately the thermostat I was using couldn't handle the polarity being reversed and when I bought the thermostat online I swear they said over voltage protection, protection from this and that and nope! It's a shame because the thermostat was so affordable for 7$ and just an extra security feature would have been great because as you can tell you already know wiring when your tired anyone could put the clips on wrong because the plus and minus at least on a 12v car battery is labeled in dark colouring the same as the battery. Well cheers and hopfuly this will work out for your shop
Thanks. Got 360W of solar on the roof of the insulated summerhouse and 2x200Ah acid battery banks. I will give this a try. Just pushing the temp up 1-3degrees would make alot of differense.
Whilst you’re boiling that kettle for your cuppa add a bit more water, fill hot water bottle place into cushion cover and put it behind your back when you are sitting down enjoying your ginger nuts, 700w 240v kettle 1 litre of water 70wh approx
Ah my Mitsubishi Outlander has a 120 watt 12v lighter outlet in the back. Some of those little cheap 12v electrics do work fine as they’re designed to run for a couple mins tops not like a car heater.
Thanks for the video. This gave me the ideo to buy a PTC heater and make a Lithium Ion battery pack to more quickly defrost my windows in the winter. While my trucks heater works fine and all in the winter I use more gas defrosting my windows than it takes for me to drive the 1 mile home at 4:30 am from work. Using more gas to defrost windows than it takes to drive one mile kinda bugs me even though it's a minor thing. Over time this setup would pay for its self in gas savings for sure. 👍😁
That’s really interesting, thanks for telling me this. I’ve also found it works well as a screen defroster. It will definitely cost a lot less than burning gas while you wait for it to heat up for sure!
Seeing this makes me so glad the Citroen Ami has a heater even if it's only intended to clear the windscreen. Remains to be seen if you can turn it on while charging with the doors locked but I hope so. Factory doors help too.
Yes it's good it has a heater, the only trouble is the AMI is dangerously slow unless you just use it in the center of a city where every car is travelling below 30 anyways.
you can run 10-12 amp devices over a 12v port, so possibly 144w available, but that doesn't include what devices are connected to the car. Like radio, cabin lights, etc..
Set up a circuit to alternate between each element one or two second each flip flopping between the two. The accumulated heat in each element would continue to heat the through air firing its off period. That means that there is only one element powered on at any time but both heat up evenly but your power consumption is seen as a single element.
@@andykirby theorising here but…. Yes it will but not by much if your cycle time between switching is low. You are only topping up the element from a still hot state rather than warming it up from cold. However, all of the air going over the elements will be heated rather than only 50%. Your current should never rise any higher than the peak for a single element and indeed should reduce as both become warmer. Another thing I thought is that by warming only a single element some of its heat will go into warming the other element anyway so you are effectively helping it along with the switching.
3D printer silicon heater pads (many sizes, voltages and watt to chose from), build into jacket and maybe pants, much less power usage and much more heat where needed, lighter socket will be enough power
Correct on the regulated output of 12v i blew a fuse on Renault Clio 4, 2015 model, with a tyre pump, they recommend attaching to the battery directly. Looked it up, 5 amp fuse so that means p=vi or 12x5 ie 60W. Used a mains home heater in a car, to dry it out after window breakage, you want 3kW max, but 1kW works, would settle for that. Of course, that is almost 20 times what the 12v outlet can give.
One thing to remember is that when the car is running you can pull a LOT of power direct from the battery, but you would need some big 40mm2 (at least) cables to run to the heater to avoid inefficiencies and prevent melting the cables. Then you could probably get close to 1000W (that’s about 90V at 12V) depending on the car the alternator might be able to deal with it!
You typo'd Andy? You meant 4.0 mm sqd I think? [EDIT - No, of course you are right, I am thinking of eg shower cables where they talk of 9mm and so on. You mean as in Pi R squared, with a 3mm to 4mm radius of cable, ie about 8 to 9mm dia copper cable, but big beefy strands type (for domestic power that is). Making roughly 3.14 x 4x4 = 48 sq mm for example. I get it, you are of course correct, no typo]. Yes, everything helps, to put energy where you want it. I was surprised, that in the Nissan LEAF, my feet turned to blocks of ice going over the tops by Tebay services, Cumbria? I just assumed, they would super-insulate the car cabin but apparently not. That, brings to mind, the relative costs and effectiveness and so on of different aspects of heating EVs. I feel, to use more energy, is a short-term solution - it's like the 1970's and the fight to insulate houses all over again? There ought to be at least 3 layers: stick-on foam/foil layer goes on the metal first; then a decent foam at least 1cm thick that keeps that thickness, then the usual carpet material, plus the car mats, which I think in an EV ought to be much thicker than normal. In my old Volvo diesel, I have the original mats, then some aftermarket decent ones of similar quality on top. It's really quite plush. Very insulative - I think the Nissan LEAF I used for a few days to Scotland, had less insulation than this Volvo. Needs to be much, much better. Lastly, surely we don't have to have the double-glazing fight too?! Apparently the 2017/18 Toyota Prius has in effect DG side windows, they have laminated these as well as the front screen/windshield. It's really time to make the glass much better at heat retention, stop condensation too, which is a hazard for visibility we all have experienced? ?Surely an airgap is inevitable? Can't say it is cost - EVs being hilariously expensive already!
The problem or dilemma is now. With a power outage like America is having now. Solar is useless with a storm. And forget about sun or recharging any batteries. Gas power is the only option
The actual secret to battery powered heating is that you must 1) heat a small space that is 2) well insulated. By small, I do not mean a room. Forget it. You've got to heat a space just large enough to sleep in. Something like one of like one of Paul Elkin's bicycle campers.
@@andykirby Yeah man, thanks! All the heat raises up to your roof, so... keep it low and you're fine! I'll watch that video too. You also reminded me of another build that could work with electricity - although he uses a radiator system: th-cam.com/video/BREQY1TL7JA/w-d-xo.html his tiny house on skiis could easily be warmed by your electric unit. I heat my teardrop with electricity.... thing is though that I have one cheat: I live in Florida.
Each layer of 8mil Poly plastic effectively moves you a weather Zone toward the South. Adding that material to the walls would result in a necessity for considerably less heat in a given area.
best to use a desiel heater 150$ on amazon, they can be connected to ur car battery and as long as you drive / start ur vehicle every 3-4days the battery will be fine
Just a thought, you should look into different windows for the Twizy. I know the standard windows you have have got gaps at the rear. If you could insult the Twizy better with proper sealed windows then heating would be much easier.
I learn something on every video as you take so much time in the procedure and choice in presentation. Of course you have probably heard it said many times I appreciate hearing you’re explanations. Thanks!
Thanks for that, I appreciate that, sometimes I think I’m not that clear in my explanations as my mind is going 200mph but that’s good to know it’s helping someone😁
In terms of parking the car in a small shed. Wondering if you could hook up Solar panels from the roof directly to the heater for daytime heating of the shed itself... (Would work out to 18v approx)
Sunshine 1000W / sq meter, solar panel 220W / sq meter = much money for little use. Better 1 sqm window + black curtain = 1000W heater for basically free. For night heating use something else that is painted black, like a plastic drum or concrete slabs. If you don't have south facing windows, use a solar heater with a small solar powered pc fan to draw in hot air from the roof. Heat storage can be a wooden box with ducting under the shed filled with rocks. The use in a car is something different. However batteries are expensive, so better use a big block of aluminium with holes drilled through and a pc fan. The simply heat the block on the stove before use.
What about double the battery or more ,wire in a power supply that can power the heaters and charge the heater pack by connecting into the twizzy 220v cable and you should be able to charge the twizzy and run the heater while also charging the heater pack hope I'm making sense haven't had much sleep
For someone who isn't electric minded (me) what is the cost of running 12v on say 150w heater? So if I was using home supply but 12v, is it cheaper, or only cheaper if solar and battery?
Basically 150W is 150W wherever it comes from and whatever voltage. It would probably hard to find a 150W mains powered heater BUT you could use a 24V power supply and a 24V 150W heater and it might take the edge off the room. There's some good little 500W plug in heaters that are probably more worthwhile using in these times where energy is expensive. A 500W heater on solidly for an hour with use the same amount of energy as a 2000W mains heater on for 15 minutes.
My heat in my car stopped working and the mechanic told me it would be over $1000 to fix it. Since it's an older car, I definitely do not want to put that much money into it. I have tried the small heaters that plug into your cigarette lighter and they just blow out my fuse every time. So a battery powered heater would be great!
I want to use a 12 volt heater for my twin cab Mitsubishi fuso canter twin cab. I sleep in it with my son when we go away bike rideing. I'm thinking would be good to find a 12 volt heater with a thermostat. because I don't want to be turning it of and on all night . but I can't find a 12 volt 300 watt one with a thermostat. do they make one ???
Was thinking the same thing but my solution would be to wire a seat heater to my minivan rv mattress that way I am not heating the air. I like the idea of the skateboard battery with the management system.
Yes exactly, those heated seat covers are really effective at keeping you warm (wherever you put it) and they run on a tiny amount of energy. They could run for hours on one of these batteries.
Nice one Andy not seen ye channel for a while love the direction you've gone in. interesting tech and good application it could work for a morning heater for my sprinter I've got a 900ah bank and 740 of solar so it would just pull my bank down in the morning ready for a day's charging from the solar cheers for Andy
So basically you can take this thing and a e-scooter battery pack and have 10-20-30 minutes of your legs not freezing while your car heats up… Would be interesting to know the overall efficiency of the build, as this thing has to be portable (in the winter you take it with you in the car so it shouldn’t be too bulky)
Had the same idea 😆 I have taken apart one of those de misters and they work so much better without the cases on 👍 mine says 150w but connected it to my 500w power pack and it was pushing out 130w ok run a off grid valeting and detailing unit so looking for somthing to hear my garage of the 500w power pack 130w would take days to warm up really don't want to buy gas but I'm with you on the rechargeable heaters
The amps that is drawn is the main concern as a standard battery wont last very long. expect if running while car going. but would put a huge load on the system. enjoyed the video and thanks for shearing .
Yes correct! It lasts about 20 mins or so which is just about long enough for a quick trip to the local shops but I’m going to revise it for the winter! Stay tuned!
I would love a battery powered heater! I run my a mobile car valeting business. It would be cool(excuse the pun) to have one for my van. for overnight just to keep the frost at bay. It's a pain to remove all my hoses and power washers from my van every night. Every winter i end up chancing it and leaving them on my van over night which inevitably leads to there demise.
The issue you’ve got is the run time when using batteries. Is your van parked near a mains outlet? That would be the best way to keep the edge off, look for 500W or lower Oil filled radiators they work well. Does the water in your tanks actually freeze inside your van at night? If so I reckon you’d be best to insulate it with celotex or something.
I think you have it backwards. The wire heats up because of the current draw (not voltage). And the current may be excessive depending on the loadapplied. Basic electrical theory P=I/E.
There are no battery powered heaters because it require a lot of electrical energy to create heat. For a heater to last a reasonable time, the battery would have to be huge.
Great project! Do you think a 18v power drill battery would give you enough capacity? On the draughty Twizy you want to close some of the holes up. The worst culprit is the hole from the steering column, the wind blows up your trouser leg! Have a look on the Twizy forums for pictures, very easy to make and makes a difference!
Actually I have a 5Ah 18v drill battery and one of these heaters runs for about 15-20 minutes but they also charge pretty quick so it’s not bad. Good advice about the twizy, I know the hole you mean, I will check out how to insulate it!!
Would have been nice to get a before temp and after temp cause it feels nice doesn't really help with actual comfort. Nice video but if you can add something to tell us how the temp is outside then inside then turn on for 10 min kinda thing and again temp with heater on. Also how long does the battery last that kind of thing. Thanks!
It was a while ago but there’s more videos about this heater scattered on my channel, one I think is called “twizy heating” basically after all these experiments I made another one that kicks out about 400W and runs for around 30 minutes. It raises the temperature about 10 degrees in my super small Renault twizy which has no insulation at all. I used it all last winter and will be using it again this winter it really helps.
I got a heated seat like you have for my Outlander PHEV to save power for the up coming winter. It work for about 5 minuets, burnt out the fuse. Might do something like what your doing.
Try this heated seat pad, it's been working well for months, only draws 1-2amps, amzn.to/2q2afrn if you are thinking about heaters you need to wire directly to the battery.
Hi Andy Yes it has two USB and one car 12 volt socket and two household standard 3-pin plug sockets. It is a Yeti goal zero 400w and is a lead acid electric generator and I have a 300 watt inverter. I was just wondering roughly what kind of runtime would you think I'd get off it. Thanks for your help.👍👍👍👍
Andy I’ve made a pond heater from a 12 v 600 w heating element , on a 240 to 12 v dc 50 amp transformer , will it use less power than say 600 w 240 heater , your input would be nice here .
It won’t be as efficient as a 12v 600W heater running from a true 12v source like a battery. The drop down transformer wont be that efficient, also at 50A you’ll lose some power in the cables running from the transformer to the element. At 230V 600W would only be 3A.
Andy got a nissan leaf ptc failure on it nissan want 3000 plus for just the part. So air con not working only blows cold air so a real problem for the winter. Would you be interested in making me a fan for the leaf? Got some black and decker 36volt battery and ego 56volt battery. Cheers
Releaved to find this video, as I've been playing with the idea for some time, but was going down the sealed lead acid battery route. Think you've saved me some R&D time. Thank you! I wanted to ask the relevence of the two parts links below the video refering to the Bosch charge adapter and the Bosch battery, as you don't mention them in the video. I can guess what's coming, but would like to know if you've already built and tested, and will upload a video soon. P.s. Ffor my one (I have a vaguely anti-social sounding car) which is fine to start and drive off gently, but when it's freezing I need to run the engine to de-ice/de-fog the car. The neighbours are great, but my conciense takes a bashing. I'm planning to build the same thing, but set it up to sit in the passenger seat and connect up an RF switchable relay, so when I wake up I can start the cabin heater 30 mins before I use the car. Then later in the day re-charge it. Thoughts?
Glad the video was of some help... yes SLA or any lead acid battery is a no go for running any big resistive old like a heater, the voltage drop (pheukerts law) is just too much of an issue. Yes the links were for a charge adapter for the Bosch battery and the battery itself. It was an experiment to see if I could use an off the shelf drill pack to power one of these heaters as well. Actually it turns out you probably need 2 x 5Ah batteries in parallel in order to give a half decent run time. To be honest it would be cheaper using Lipos from hobby King. The biggest thing I’ve learnt here is running on as high voltage as you can...6 cell lithium packs at 22.2V nominal work great on the heaters than can handle 24V because the fan speed is higher and the watts are higher whilst the current is lower. Your idea sounds great triggering the heater with an RF keyfob, I think you’ll find it will demist the windscreen pretty effectively and definitely take the edge off a cold morning before you get into the car. Recently I’ve been experimenting building some high power Lithium battery Packs for ebikes and in the process I’ve built a test pack which is currently running another one of these heaters, there’s a video coming soon which might be of interest! Stay tuned!
@@andykirby thanks for the reply, looking forward to the next video! More research done today on cost, I think this is great if you already own power tools that have chargers and the same type of batteries, but if you're investing for just the purposes of carrying out this project. I'm worried it may become uneconomic. Will take a look down the hobby king lipo route.
Thanks for sharing great job✌👍. @@thecrazerkid2146Sorry I am not as adept at this as you might be… battery? They are so limited as far as time. I need something powerful and rechargeable for an extended amount of time!
@ andy kirby Imagine if you put a 300w 24v mono solar panel L×W×H 1480*990*35 mm 16kg on roof racks on top of the Twizy So whenever you went out during the day it could be going through a reasonably good 12/24v 30a Solar Controller & use a 16v 500 Farad Super Capacitors that is hooked up in place of a battery. I have 3 sets of 3000 Farad Super Capacitors in parallel which can transfer 170 amps per set, a 500 Farad set would be able to handle 1/6th of 170 amps or 28.3 amps x 15v = 424.5w that the super capacitor set will transfer. All you would have to do is adjust the settings of the voltages inside the solar charger to work with the capacitors. This has been done this way where there is a guy that made a capacitor bank connected up to an inverter to use to run power tools while his foldout solar panels laid on the ground. The reason I have mine are that I'll be using mine off grid with 12v inverters & when you draw large loads from lead acid batteries you get an instant voltage sag because they are not meant for high drain appliances. To get around this you put Super Capacitors between the solar charger & batteries to the inverter, all of the power coming from the solar panels will go in & out of the capacitors to the inverters leaving only a small drain on the batteries that may be the extra load that the solar doesn't provide. In other words you might have a 320 amp load from your inverter, 260 amps could be coming from your solar panels going through the capacitors & the extra 60 amps needed coming from the batteries which they can easily provide for a long period. Also if you carried around a small inverter with you then you could also charge slowly your car if you are stuck somewhere with no charging station, out of range of mobile or other ways of charging up. If you are stuck for an hour charging to get 5 miles of power then that could be enough to get you to a charging place or somewhere you can charge quicker. You could also heat up your shed during the daytime by having it automatically come on as the sun is shining & transferring power to the Super Capacitor set or sets in series if you run 12v or 24v & when the sun goes down it will shut off so if you come into the shed at night the shed should keep it's warmth until the morning. www.ebay.com.au/itm/300W-SOLAR-PANEL-MONOCRYSTALLINE-12V-24V-MONO-CARAVAN-BOAT-HOUSE-OFF-GRID/132409840226?epid=12010287477&hash=item1ed43dd262:g:6W8AAOSwy0JaPCdX www.ebay.com.au/itm/15A-30A-50A-Solar-Charge-Controller-Battery-Regulator-12V-24V-Auto-100V-MPPT-EN/272774628898?hash=item3f82a28622:m:m9RJggFV1VDfBtbpTxX-Ayw www.ebay.com.au/itm/6-Pcs-1-35MM-X-60MM-Farad-Capacitor-2-7V-500F-Super-Capacitor-Protection-Board/323025974166?hash=item4b35d93396:g:T4QAAOSwp7taaC53 Mark, Perth, Western Australia
Very interesting Mark, I’m mid way through filming a series about converting my shed to solar and I’m intrigued by what you are saying about super capacitors, I’ve learnt very quickly that 1000W will be pulling about 90A at 12V but you rarely need that much power, for instance my Dyson heater may blast 2kW for 10-20 seconds to heat the shed up and then not do it again for 20 minutes or so, so it’s pointless having a huge battery bank just to cope with intermittent loads, (my shed uses less than 1kwh per day) I will certainly look more into this. I’m currently building a micro powerwall and it will be featured soon on the channel. Thanks again for the comment.
For your shed you could have a small battery bank and these. www.mouser.com/Passive-Components/Capacitors/Supercapacitors-Ultracapacitors/_/N-5x76s?P=1yx4aw3&Keyword=167816066&FS=True&Ntk=P_MarCom
Great! They work pretty well, one thing I didn’t try is wiring up the two elements in series. I reckon if you have a few of these in a shed it would get pretty toasty, even on 12V.
well i got hold of mine and ,yea it puts out a lot of heat for its size....nice and warm lol...put it on my shed battary since my shed is powerd by solar panals ( its a 100AH deep cycle) and it draws around 30 amps...at 12v..dont have anything thats 24 volt so i cant test it. but still its nice
was wondering if this would work to warm the cab of my ENV , so I don't lose range......I figured on using an aux battery , not the 12v control battery. just take the chill off for a few hours......
It certainly works, yes it’s advisable to use an AUX battery, your going to need quite a big battery though for a couple of hours, mine is 22V 8ah lithium and it only runs for about 15 minutes...but most of my journeys are short hops to town... I will be revisiting this soon now the weather is getting colder!
Hi Andy Yes it has two usb sockets one 12 volt car socket and to 3 Pind plug household sockets. It is a goal zero Yeti 400 w lead acid electric powered generator and I have a 300 watt inverter. What sort of run time would you think approximately I get off this and also would I need to use the inverter. Thanks for your help it'd be much appreciated.😁😁😁😁😁
The 12v socket will have a limit to what current you can pull through it or it will melt if you exceed that rating, also being lead acid it will suffer quite a voltage drop under high load. Duration depends on the Ah of the battery, this heater can draw 25A at 12V so in an hour that would be 25Ah so find out what the total Ah is of the battery and then it will give you an idea of how long in would run. Lead acid is inefficient so you’ll only get 60-70% of the total capacity. Hope it helps! Best way is to try it and see what happens!
Hi Would this work with a goal zero 400 and a 300 what inverter and what would you think the running time would be for it🤔🤔🤔🤔. Could do with something like this for my micro camper👍👍👍👍👍 much appreciated if you could help
ANDY KIRBY ? They probably don't put battery operated heaters on the market because with regular batteries it wont last all day and Lithium battery packs could run a heater BUT if the Lithium battery leak do to high heat, it could explode and start a fire.
I work with lithium batteries every day and would never sit on top of one or even put a laptop on my knee. I have seen too many go off with a massive bang or flare off. Just not worth the risk..
Might be a bit overkill, I’ve been working with them years and never had an issue. As long as you keep them within safe parameters then they are fine. Bit like petrol really!😅
The world's has all this technology and can't create a heater to run without draining a battery. Lol
Yeah that’s why I did it 😂 seriously though heating space takes a HUGE amount of energy, that energy has to come from somewhere whilst being safe, otherwise you could just have a radioisotope strapped to your car!
It’s not the battery. It’s just producing enough heat to warm a room uses more energy than anything else.
If you took a physics class you’d understand that
Duh 🙄✨🔌 🍌😛
If you want to hear a room you need a huge battery

Nice, glad it helped!
You can say what types of batteries you using and is that fix your problem?
He was using 6 cells at 23 volts but not charged... so they are lithium ion pouch cells wired in series.
Battery powered heated handgrips...next big thing, you are ahead of the curve brother!
I have two of the “useless” products you listed and they work well in my truck. One keeps the windshield clear and one heats the cab (road pro). One is wired direct to the battery. It takes the edge off for sure.
Do they really work? I have a 2500 dodge diesel. Would my battery be good to hook this up and run it while driving?
@@supremekingjesus425Yeah, wire it directly and put a fuse on it. Since I wrote this the road pro died. I opened it up and bypassed all it’s circuits and it’s better than ever. Don’t use a 12v port, mine melted.
@@mixmasterwillyd9959 please post a video how you did it..
I plant in using 2 roadpro heaters in my 21 foot RV..
If you wire it to your car's battery you could run the heater fora few mins to an hour or more depending on your car battery's performance and specs but remember everytime you run it without the engine on you are draining your battery very quickly.
nice one mate. ive been looking for a battery powered heater as well and cant find one.
I was just wondering the same thing why arent these made?
Thanks. Got 360W of solar on the roof of the insulated summerhouse and 2x200Ah acid battery banks.
I will give this a try. Just pushing the temp up 1-3degrees would make alot of differense.
Maybe a radiator heater would be more practical. A 110 plug for preheating the oil and the battery to maintain temperature on the go.
Whilst you’re boiling that kettle for your cuppa add a bit more water, fill hot water bottle place into cushion cover and put it behind your back when you are sitting down enjoying your ginger nuts, 700w 240v kettle 1 litre of water 70wh approx
12 volt heated seat may help keep warm. 20 pound at argos.
@@andykirby agreed, no good for your country lanes unless you're deaf to honking cars :P
it's brilliant. I would really like such one to preheat the car so i got rid of scratching the windows for frost.
you can run 10-12 amp devices over a 12v port, so possibly 144w available, but that doesn't include what devices are connected to the car. Like radio, cabin lights, etc..
Andy, I’ve been trying to find a mini battery operated desktop heater do you take orders?
Set up a circuit to alternate between each element one or two second each flip flopping between the two. The accumulated heat in each element would continue to heat the through air firing its off period.
That means that there is only one element powered on at any time but both heat up evenly but your power consumption is seen as a single element.
Interesting but does it not require more power to bring the element back up to temp each cycle vs having one on continuously?
Hi
sorry it´s better here
you have tested different heater 12V system

Could u rig the battery to a solar array???🤔
The actual secret to battery powered heating is that you must 1) heat a small space that is 2) well insulated. By small, I do not mean a room. Forget it. You've got to heat a space just large enough to sleep in. Something like one of like one of Paul Elkin's bicycle campers.
You mean like this: th-cam.com/video/lJMuImHU-fU/w-d-xo.html
@@andykirby Yeah man, thanks! All the heat raises up to your roof, so... keep it low and you're fine! I'll watch that video too.
You also reminded me of another build that could work with electricity - although he uses a radiator system:
th-cam.com/video/BREQY1TL7JA/w-d-xo.html his tiny house on skiis could easily be warmed by your electric unit.
I heat my teardrop with electricity.... thing is though that I have one cheat: I live in Florida.
Each layer of 8mil Poly plastic effectively moves you a weather Zone toward the South. Adding that material to the walls would result in a necessity for considerably less heat in a given area.
You should sell these. I'd buy one! Perfect for a text where there is risk for carbon monoxide poisoning with gas heaters.
Yesssss
best to use a desiel heater 150$ on amazon, they can be connected to ur car battery and as long as you drive / start ur vehicle every 3-4days the battery will be fine
the desiel heaters will draw 0.5-1 amp the whole night, jsut something to think about
Boost converters exist and the new wire you added in doesnt mater cause only that new wire is beefy.. not rest of the device .
What if you stack like 8 battery’s and make a case for it so a person can run it for a few hours.
We have battery powered ac but no heaters.
Just a thought, you should look into different windows for the Twizy. I know the standard windows you have have got gaps at the rear. If you could insult the Twizy better with proper sealed windows then heating would be much easier.
Could I connect it directly to solar panel?
The simply heat the block on the stove before use.
hi
i have seen than you have tested different heathers system
with one is better ?
Power it directly from the battery
They do exist but so far, they are not very efficient. Electrical heat almost useless because fuel based heating is 10x more efficient.
why don`t youbuythe infraret heating film (12v)? it is quiet and more effective - you can put it under the floor mat, or to the ceiling.
I’m glad you know the car heaters are shit, I’ve tried them and they are
This is brilliant! I would totally buy a couple from you if I could for my electric car. Wow
Why don't you manufacture them and sell them? Not a lot of people can make such battery powered heaters.
What about 12 v solar powerd heater?
The amps that is drawn is the main concern as a standard battery wont last very long. expect if running while car going. but would put a huge load on the system.
enjoyed the video and thanks for shearing .
Yes correct! It lasts about 20 mins or so which is just about long enough for a quick trip to the local shops but I’m going to revise it for the winter! Stay tuned!
As someone mentioned below... yes there are heated jackets. That might be the way to go for your Twizzy.
That would keep it 1-2 degrees above the outside temp.
The voltage drop in the wire is caused by the wire heating up. In other words, a heater. You can't cheat the maths.
I think you have it backwards. The wire heats up because of the current draw (not voltage). And the current may be excessive depending on the loadapplied. Basic electrical theory P=I/E.
Is there a link to this mini heater?
You know where the heat comming from? You’re shorting positive and negative to create heat. That why they are like 1,500-2,500 watts
There are no battery powered heaters because it require a lot of electrical energy to create heat.
For a heater to last a reasonable time, the battery would have to be huge.
Try a chinese diesel night heater in your twizy. Cheap to run an lots of heat. £120,00 Ebay
If we have a car breakdown you need a emergency heater...
Try army surplus. Troops in the field need heat
They do exist already if you did a simple search you'd find then.
Thanks for sharing your concept. I was thinking of making something similar for my car and your video gave me a lot of feedback ;)
Great to hear! These heaters with the right battery can be pretty effective.
@@andykirby Ok thanks I will check them out =).
Love the Boston Redsox Hat! I live near Boston. Great video!

Hi Andy
Yes it has two USB and one car 12 volt socket and two household standard 3-pin plug sockets.

The ebike battery can be used as emergency power bank
Andy I’ve made a pond heater from a 12 v 600 w heating element , on a 240 to 12 v dc 50 amp transformer , will it use less power than say 600 w 240 heater , your input would be nice here .
It won’t be as efficient as a 12v 600W heater running from a true 12v source like a battery. The drop down transformer wont be that efficient, also at 50A you’ll lose some power in the cables running from the transformer to the element.
At 230V 600W would only be 3A.
Good on ya mate. The skateboard battery was a perfect fit for this project. I hope you get your power supply/charger fixed.
Andy got a nissan leaf ptc failure on it nissan want 3000 plus for just the part. So air con not working only blows cold air so a real problem for the winter. Would you be interested in making me a fan for the leaf? Got some black and decker 36volt battery and ego 56volt battery. Cheers
Hi Andy, bit of a random question. where did you get your work bench power supply units from ? Thank you
Good question, I think it was Ebay, just search 30A bench power supply.

23V, 14A, 1.64 Ohm's dissipating 322 watts of power. 5Ah battery would last 0.357142 hours. or roughly less than 21 minutes 25 seconds.

Imagine if you put a 300w 24v mono solar panel L×W×H 1480*990*35 mm 16kg on roof racks on top of the Twizy So whenever you went out during the day it could be going through a reasonably good 12/24v 30a Solar Controller & use a 16v 500 Farad Super Capacitors that is hooked up in place of a battery.

For your shed you could have a small battery bank and these.

just got hold of one of those heaters from amazon. going to have a mess around with it and see what i can do ..may come in useful for the shed.
Great! They work pretty well, one thing I didn’t try is wiring up the two elements in series. I reckon if you have a few of these in a shed it would get pretty toasty, even on 12V.
by the way its your falt i orded it hahahah.. but yea nice vid man
Haha! 😅 we all love a gadget around here! let me know how it goes.
hahahah will do dude
well i got hold of mine and ,yea it puts out a lot of heat for its size....nice and warm lol...put it on my shed battary since my shed is powerd by solar panals ( its a 100AH deep cycle) and it draws around 30 amps...at 12v..dont have anything thats 24 volt so i cant test it. but still its nice
was wondering if this would work to warm the cab of my ENV , so I don't lose range......I figured on using an aux battery , not the 12v control battery. just take the chill off for a few hours......
Hi Andy
Yes it has two usb sockets one 12 volt car socket and to 3 Pind plug household sockets.
Hi
Would this work with a goal zero 400 and a 300 what inverter and what would you think the running time would be for it🤔🤔🤔🤔. Could do with something like this for my micro camper👍👍👍👍👍 much appreciated if you could help
Doesn’t the goal zero have a 12V output? If it has and it’s powerful enough (300-400W) then you could just plug it right in!
Does anyone make an electric heater that runs like a cordless drill or cordless saw of a battery?
What you actually need is a inferred heater 👍I'm trying to make one via my 500w power pack
Did you see my camping trailer video? I put a 180W one in there and it's brilliant!
@@andykirby not seen it yet will check it out later
Love this video... Can u make video on the battery build thanks in advance from U.S.
ANDY KIRBY ? They probably don't put battery operated heaters on the market because with regular batteries it wont last all day and Lithium battery packs could run a heater BUT if the Lithium battery leak do to high heat, it could explode and start a fire.
Now we got battery powered lawn mower but no heater. Even electric cars
THAT DRIVE LOOKED SOMEWHERE IN SEATTLE ?
awesome! love this vid!
It takes massive amounts of energy to create heat.
I've been looking for it to put in a sealed doubled pane window
, nothing found.
Anytime is a good time for a Cup of tea & a ginger nut. 👍
