No pair of actors could duplicate the performance of Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones in Lonesome Dove, nor the manner in which they complimented each others abilities.
True that. Other than Spenser for Hire, he didn't really have a stellar career in film and TV. But he nailed it as Jake Spoon. A D-bag you still loved.
That is the truth. Seen him in lots of stuff, but always think of Jake Spoon first. The way he made peace with Gus at the end was just scripting, but Urich OWNED that scene. I just watched that scene again, and had forgotten how Gus had sucked air after Jake spurred his horse to save Gus from having to do that fatal deed. Then Duvall walks away, hat to chest, muttering an unknown prayer for the soul of his friend. Woodrow sat his horse erect, stone-faced through it all
Please watch Jerry Skinner's video "The True Story of Lonesome Dove Movie." He traveled to the real places and provided incredible true facts. Highly enjoyable for a fan.

Watching this movie was the most enjoyable valuable time that I spent in my life.the characters,dialogs,and story was so perfect.and I learned a lot to how to make deal with hard situations in life.5 star from me to every minute of this movie.

One of my all time favourite westerns, Great script, great cast, and amen to every other compliment has already been said here.............. As soon as it came out on VHS, I bought it, now I have it on DVD.
When Gus talks to the Diane Lane character after she was attacked, the whole scene gets me everytime. The writing of Lonesome Dove was perfect. "The Unforgiven" is another realistic portrayal of the Old West.
When this was originally shown, the audience built so big and so quickly, restaurants and bars closed on Wednesday, the night of the final episode-- everyone was watching Lonesome Dove.
It's makes me so proud, knowing this was loosely based on my great great grandfather Nelson Story. His trip from Texas in 1860s was riddled with danger and adventure. We still ranch right where he settled.

Lonesome Dove was fantastic. But I still get the heebie-jeebies when that poor Irish kid rides right in to the nest of water moccasins during the first river crossing.
I am still convinced that McMurtry "borrowed" the story of my great, great Uncle and his brothers who led cattle drives to Dodge and then into Nebraska in the 1870's. There was even a book written about them called "Ladder of Rivers". They were for real, not a Hollywood script.

Apples to oranges. Duke was the best ever, but in his time westerns were more comical and had a less authentic feel than the real west. He was never allowed to be in an actual western movie, other than his last “ The Shootist” all the rest were kinda hokey and just not real. Lonesome Dove showed the gritty side of the real life west and it makes for a much better movie by that standard. Gus and Cap’n Call definitely made the movie a standout hit from the very beginning though. The movie would not be the same without those two standout roles for sure. But they are both phenomenol actors in just about every movie they play in.
This is a great line in the movie. I have used it a time or two in gas stations, or other places where people are wiping down a table. Very few people ever know what the hell I am referring to.
My father who was a life long cowboy, rode horse back on large ranches in Texas, working cattle, he was an accomplished roper and competed in rodeos, won the registered quarter horse roping National. Championship in roping, he read the book and loved it, saw the movie and told me it was the most authentic move he ever saw, the horses, cattle, clothing, saddles and gear was authentic. He said there was only one mistake they made, in the beginning Woodrow was trying to break The grey horse they called the “hell bitch” because she was a mean mare that was very difficult to tame. But in the movie even though they referred to the horse as the Hell Bitch in the movie, the horse they used was a gelding
Duvall hired former Baylor All-American and Houston Oiler Lawrence Elkins to teach him to speak and act Texan while preparing for Tender Mercies in 1983. Duval hired him again for Lonesome Dove. Elkins took him to stay on the ranch of retired legendary Hall of Fame quarterback Sammy Baugh near Rotan, TX. to meet a real Texas cowman. Duvall later credited Gus McCrea's unique hand gestures and mannerisms to Baugh. And please, it's pronounced Luh-RAY-doh.
It's a rarity when a movie follows a book exactly, so is having a cast of so many great and good actors in a made for TV film not to mention a decent score, excellent dialog, and good cinematography. Having it come together in one film is perfection. My favorite western.
"What do you legs for anyway? You don't like to do nothing but sit on the porch and drink whiskey"..."I like to kick a pig every once in a while. Now, how would I do that" What follows those lines are the most saddest of all history of cinematic moments. To this day, I still tear up when I watch that scene.
Nobody but Tommy and Robert could have played these roles and did the movie justice. Every aspect of life is covered in this masterpiece. If you haven't already seen the series and want to see the sequels, watch them first. After seeing Lonesome Dove they just can't measure up. They are good, but you'll be disappointed when you compare original.

I delayed going into basic training in the Air Force for a month to watch this on TV! Glad I did! I remember all 3-4 nights it was on, we had an ice storm in Austin, Texas, plumbing destroyed from a freeze, and I watched it religiously. And the casting was perfect! I was glad to see Chris Cooper after the overlooked Matewan in a role as an ineffectual sheriff and the nasty Greg from Superman 3 play an even nastier character in this as a horse thief and man burner.
The TV miniseries was great...but the book was AMAZING with much more insight (obviously they couldn't include it all in the tv show). Book absolutely deserved the Pulitzer Prize.
Actually most of the book and movie were taken from the lives of Goodnight and Loving. I discovered that when reading Goodnight's biography. I thought I had heard the story before and yes, it was in the movie Lonesome Dove.

Oliver Loving has relatives still in Mortons Gap KY where he went down Pond River in a raft to end up in Texas. Some of his living relatives were at a celebration of his life and there is an historical marker in the town now.
Excellent documentary. I second that as a highly recommended watch. LD brings so much of their story to life, Hollywood and all. Hollywood may have blown the LD sequels but they got LD so right. Larry McMurtry’s sometimes writing partner, Diana Osana co-wrote the screenplay. I was so in hopes they’d collaborate again on their book ‘Zeke and Ned’ for another excellent McMurtry movie. Sadly that’s passed, since the passing of the great McMurtry who penned all of us in his Americana books. My McMurtry shelf turned into shelves; I treasure my LD first edition with the typo. My favorite book and movie of all time.
I believe this was the best book written by Larry McMurtry. And then found out the series was as good as the book. I've watched this many times. Blue Duck was the scariest character in the story, IMO.

Loved the discussion Gus and Captain Col had about the Latin on the covered wagon. Gus pronounced motto with the accent on the second syllable: motto’. Loved that and the explanation of meaning to Col. UVA Uvam Vivendo Varia fit. Grapes ripen faster in the presence of ripened fruit. Now ain’t that the truth? Great motto’.
You could use that in relation to raising a child if you are a well behaved disciplined mature strong and figure then your child will follow suit usually
read the book when it first came out and thought about a dozen times to shelf the book in the first 100 pages. kept at it and literally could not put it down. when the series began it was like duval and jones were just how i imagined the characters to be from the book.
The other thing we don't know about Lonesome Dove is whether Gus cheated for that poke. He wouldn't say he did, and he wouldn't say he didn't, but he did say that a man who won't cheat for a poke don't want one bad enough.
Well said. I wore out two extended play vhs tapes when they first came out. Watched it every day, sometimes twice a day when I was off. Went through several books - some fell apart, some loaned and never returned, even one that was rubber banded together (I hold no grudges about that, I’m rather happy, in fact) but I own two hardcover copies today, one a true first edition and another for reading whenever without worrying about overly handling the dust jacket and pages, though I do get it out just to breathe it in, from time to time, finding favorite passages and - wait - I’m sorry, the entire book is my favorite passage.
I’m glad it was shelved so long. With the originally planned cast this easily could’ve been a traditional ‘western’ movie. Instead an authentic sincere masterpiece was made.

James McMurtry, Patrick McMurtry's son plays Jimmy Rainey in Lonesome Dove. James is also a singer songwriter that still writes and performs today.

The texas ranger and the hauling the dead body home came from Goodnight, but the cattle drive from Texas to Montana comes from Nelson Story.
They definitely casted this - spot on. I’m a big John Wayne fan, but Lonesome Dove would not be the masterpiece it is without the cast they chose.

Sadly that’s passed, since the passing of the great McMurtry who penned all of us in his Americana books. My McMurtry shelf turned into shelves; I treasure my LD first edition with the typo. My favorite book and movie of all time.

I believe this was the best book written by Larry McMurtry. And then found out the series was as good as the book. I've watched this many times. Blue Duck was the scariest character in the story, IMO.

There was actually an outlaw upon which Blue Duck was based. Bluford Duck, a Cherokee, who hung around with Belle Starr and is buried in OK.

It boundaries "Where The Red Fern Grows" as an all time classic.
Loved the discussion Gus and Captain Col had about the Latin on the covered wagon. Gus pronounced motto with the accent on the second syllable: motto’. Loved that and the explanation of meaning to Col. UVA Uvam Vivendo Varia fit. Grapes ripen faster in the presence of ripened fruit. Now ain’t that the truth? Great motto’.
You could use that in relation to raising a child if you are a well behaved disciplined mature strong and figure then your child will follow suit usually

read the book when it first came out and thought about a dozen times to shelf the book in the first 100 pages. kept at it and literally could not put it down. when the series began it was like duval and jones were just how i imagined the characters to be from the book.

The other thing we don't know about Lonesome Dove is whether Gus cheated for that poke. He wouldn't say he did, and he wouldn't say he didn't, but he did say that a man who won't cheat for a poke don't want one bad enough.

Well said. I wore out two extended play vhs tapes when they first came out. Watched it every day, sometimes twice a day when I was off. Went through several books - some fell apart, some loaned and never returned, even one that was rubber banded together (I hold no grudges about that, I’m rather happy, in fact) but I own two hardcover copies today, one a true first edition and another for reading whenever without worrying about overly handling the dust jacket and pages, though I do get it out just to breathe it in, from time to time, finding favorite passages and - wait - I’m sorry, the entire book is my favorite passage.

I’m glad it was shelved so long. With the originally planned cast this easily could’ve been a traditional ‘western’ movie. Instead an authentic sincere masterpiece was made.
