My son read the book Lonesome Dove last month and he will have an opportunity to watch it very soon. We met Gus "Robert Duvall" when they were making the movie in Texas. They showed up at a restaurant in Pittsburg, Texas called the Hot Link Stand. I had no idea they were making this great movie. I did get the actor's Robert Duvall autograph...but at the time I did not know the significance. This is one of the most outstanding movies and my husband knows and can tell you what their lines are before they say them. Thanks for those five best scenes.
Absolutely the best book every written and the best movie ever made. They picked the best 2 actors too. I've watched this movie dozens of times and love it now just as much as I did the first time I watched it. Genuine classic.
Didn’t think I would ever see to much of this movie, so I guess I need to pass a few times so my appreciation for greatness can revive it’s self again. This is probably the greatest western ever made.

The Walker-Colt had a lengthy and inconsistent lock-time; a shooter would have to be a marksman and a mathematician to shoot glassware from the air. Western mythology in film is why Wyatt Earp left Hollywood as a Western Film Advisor; he couldn't stomach the fiction. Personally, I don't care as I see it as entertainment and not documentary.
@@aliceshaw8265 - Robert Duvall was in westerns back in the late 60’s, early 70’s. He was in the original True Grit, starring John Wayne in 1969, and was in Joe Kidd with Clint Eastwood in 72.
Lonesome Dove is my absolute favorite Western. I have read all the books watched all of the miniseries. My favorite scene in the original Lonesome Dove though is where the little Irish boy gets bit by all of the moccasins in the river it is so sad.
This is my favorite movie as well. There were times in my life that life was getting the best of me and my only cure was to stop, close my doors to the outside world and watch the full 4 series movie of Lonesome Dove. Afterwards I was rejuvenated. Felt refreshed. Could go forward again. Taking all that awaited me. I still till this day don't understand why.

@@ericcovington7125 Eric, I have said the same kind of words a while back. Even my parents and grandparents said, "He should have been born before us." I eventually found true happiness in the late 1960s/early 1970s when I was most fortunate enough to find employment on American oil rigs drilling wildcat wells in the UK North Sea. Up until then I was at a total loss as to my direction in life. I met a lot of Men from The West and especially from the Oil States and I immediately felt at home and was welcomed by those men because I respected their way of living. These men seemed to me to be just about the last of the cowboys on the final frontier. It is all over now and coming to an end. The world is no longer the world it was some 50 or 60 years ago when I joined those Men Of The West and lived amongst them. But, as August McRae said, according to Larry McMurty - a *truly* great author: "If you wait, all that happens is you get older ... " [So very, very true!] "Sometimes you turn away from someone, and then one day you look back, and all of your life has gone by ... " [This line is very special to me!] "It took me an awful long time and very many wasted years to realise that: yesterday's gone on down the river and you can't get it back." "What's good for me is not necessarily good for the weak-minded." *AND* a very pertinent line from old Gus which definitely applies to me now is: "You ain't gonna take my leg!" Take care, Eric.
@@henrytree Late 60's? I believe everyone found happiness in the 60's. Haha. I surprised you can remember them. Not many do. Unless they served. Then they will never forget.

I 100% agree Darren. My favorite western ever. Tommy Lee Jones was really good, but Robert Duvall was over the top great. Thanks for watching the video.
The best line in the whole movie and I believe is a summary of the entire story, was delivered by Gus while in conversation with Call. "It ain't dyin' I'm talkin' about, its livin'.
Agreed! Awesome actors playing awesome character's. The old west was a hard place. Lonesome Dove told it very very well. My personal favorite scene was in the bar. Well done!! 🇺🇸🤠🇺🇸

One of my favorites ❤ Real Men in Real life. If folks were taught manners growing up and practiced that choice with respect and dignity, we would ALL BENEFIT greatly. God fearing, respectfully walking tall and doing the right things. Thanks for the great video 😊
I loved LD when it came out and I love it still. I have watched it several times, and plan to watch again. I cry every time Gus dies. I also loved RtLD, with Coll taking Gus back to LD to bury him, at which I cry again. Both movies are the best westerns I have ever had the privilege to watch!
Never has there been a better movie made in my time. As a kid I watched Old Yellow and it was always at the top of my list until Lonesome Dove came out.
This is one hell of a movie! Love it! I have seen it over and over, wore out a VHS tape watching it and my first DVD of the movie got to where I had trouble seeing it and it finally just froze up. Have DVD #2 at present and still pull it out to watch it off and on. A few years ago I was working on a pipeline in Nebraska and drove over to Ogalala on a Sunday afternoon just say I had been there. I called my wife and told her I went to Ogalala to try to find Clare! LOL! It was winter so the block and a half of building made to look like the old west town were not open. Also went to "Boot Hill" there and saw grave markers from the mid 1860s and a tremendous bronze statue of "The Trail Boss" on a horse. Very Cool! It is a crying shame they don't make more movies like this anymore.
A truly amazing movie with an awesome cast! My favorite scene is the next to the last one shown. Call's defense of his son always gets me where it counts. I watched the initial presentation of the miniseries and almost didn't recognize Tommy Lee Jones with the gray hair and beard. He was magnificent as Woodrow as was Robert Duvall as Gus. I've since read the book and the miniseries was as perfectly cast as I've ever seen.
Absolutely an ALL TIME FAVORITE! I've seen it countless times since it first appeared. I never tire of the relationship between Gus and Woodrow. Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall were perfect for the parts. Enough Said RDM
I saw the miniseries when I was27; I just read the book a few months ago when I turned 66, both are an excellent work that are a good part of my active memories!
Lonesome Dove has long been my favorite western movie. When strong men were courageous as bulls! Gus’s mannerisms so closely mimic those of my late great father that it’s downright eerie.
Well, from the other comments I've read, I'm not alone thinking Lonesome Dove is one of the all time great westerns. I agree with your picks, they are all good. I think my favorite is when Woodrow takes care of of the guy whipping Knute. Great scene.
Lonesome Dove is also my favorite. I have all five of the DVD’s. Notice, in the bar scene, that Woodrow takes a step back, he knows what Gus is going to do. Thank you for sharing these. Now I have to watch it again.
Don’t know who could ever put a thumbs down. Any man that loves this movie as much as I do, and you obviously, knows there’s no bad scenes! No matter what 5 scenes you pick! Fine job sir!

Can just imagine how that was a very special time for you. My dad was 40 and mom 38 when I was born, moms folks were already gone and my dads were in Alabama and us in Texas, so i only remember meeting my granddad once and i was little then. Saw my grandma a few times but just short visits and except for stopping there briefly after bootcamp for a day or two, i was no older than 12 on the few other visits. She would fry chicken on Saturday mornings in the fall. Then sit in her recliner and watch her beloved Alabama Crimson Tide and Bear Bryant and do not interrupt her and the game. She had a picture if Bryant on one wall and George Wallace on another. Had a 2door baby powder blue 57 Chevy parked in the garage, went to Church of Christ on Sunday and the grocery store once a week. Can't remember the hwy 59/79 in front of their house. Tarrant City(Birmingham) but when she was getting on the road, other drivers better be paying attention. God must have loved and protected her a lot. That was grandma Crocker...
Yes, these are some of my favorite scenes also. Good selection. Gus was my favorite character and sealed my choice of Robert Duvall as one of my favorite all-time actors.
That final death scene - was at the core of the retirement announcement I wrote to my community after 31 years at that position. That scene is timeless because it is about friendship in its purest form. Thank you for posting the scene!
One of the Greatsest Westerns Ever Made ❤ Too many favorite scenes to mention, but one that always brings a smile to my heart is the scene where Call is getting onto Gus for bringing 'that sign'....... Gus is responding by reading it in Latin, or whatever......when Call interrupts and says You don't have a clue what it says"
Lonesome dove ranks, pretty close to the top of my list of stories about the old west. It was absolutely spellbinding. Love the characters. Thank you for this. I have to concur. Those are some great scenes!

"Well he was a slow walker too, after that buffalo hooked him". Now THAT'S dry humour at it's best. I laughed so hard for 10 minutes, tears running down my face and gasping for breath.
I remember when it first ran on TV in the late 1980’s I couldn’t get enough of it. It broke my heart when Gus died and when the last episode ran. I always watch it, every time it comes on my cable channel especially with no dumb ass commercials. I also wish we got to see Blue Duck swing on a the hangman’s rope, I always wondered what Blue Ducks last words, would have been said. May Gods richly bless everyone ✝️🇺🇸.
I'd never heard of lonesome dove until recently, so I downloaded the audio book. I loved it, so I've just ordered the Blu-ray of the show. Can't wait to get it
But most moving is the tribute Call carves on Deets's makeshift grave marker: "Served with me 30 years. Fought in 21 engagements with the Commanche and the Kiowa. Cherful in all weathers, never sherked at task. Splendid behavior" Captain Call is a man of few words, so each of these words means a lot in memory of JoshuaDeets.
That quote is actually on a grave marker of a black man that worked for Charles Goodnight back in the day when they had cattle drives and he’s buried near Ft Worth,Texas.
@David Lee Actually, Deets (a.k.a. Bose Ikard) lived a full, long life working for Charles Goodnight (Woodrow's real life counterpart) and died of natural causes. The words from Woodrow's testament to Deets are the actual words Goodnight had carved into the monument he had erected for Deets.
Deets was modeled after Bose Ikard who is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford, Texas. The exact words that Call quoted about Deets is on Ikard’s grave, placed there by Charlie Goodnight. Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving were the models for Lonesome Dove. Oliver Loving was actually brought back and is buried in the same cemetery as Ikard.
That was fantastic! I love Lonesome Dove! I live my life by half a dozen or so Creedos from the books and movies! Ithere are so many life lessons and parables. They are some of the best educational materials you could ever show young men and women, age appropriate of course! Thanks for the video!
I can't imagine picking out a half dozen scenes, or a half hundred, ot a half thousand. The whole series from beginning to end was flat out GREAT - GREAT writing, GREAT direction GREAT cast, GREAT acting, GREAT filming Lonesome Dove is.in a class ALL by itself.
I agree, one of the best ever. I don’t even know how many times I’ve watched it. When I worked on a guest riding ranch, I shaped my hat like Gus’s, as did most everyone else in those days.
Being a Texan, I love this authentic western! I NEVER understood why Robert Duvall didn't receive the Emmy award for best actor in a dramatic mini series. The award went to another Robert... Robert Mitchum for Winds of War. I'm a fan of Mitchum & saw his portrayal, but it couldn't hold a candle to Duvall's Gus. Lonesome Dove is a classic & it is still watched today. My grandchildren really enjoyed seeing the dvd!! I hate to see the wrong candidate win, much like the best Oscar song for the 2017 films going to the wrong song. "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman deserved the win!!!! The song is still being sung everywhere & it too, will be a classic. I can't even recall the one that won. Long live Lonesome Dove!!!!!!!!🤠
I am a "naive" Texan who learned ALOT about Texas history when I lived there for 4 years (J. Frank Dobie, San Jacinto, Alamo, etc.). When I visited the John Bryan cabin in Dallas, I asked a worker what was the best history of early post-Civil War Texas, and they recommended "Lonesome Dove". In this case, like "Bonfire of the Vanities" for 1980's NYC, fiction telling the truth better than any history.
Saw some.of Lonesome Dove on TV back in my working days. Since then I have read & recommend the books Deadman's Walk, Comanche Moon, Lonesome Dove, The streets of Laredo. Also have the vhs tapes & the dvds. Gues I am addicted to these stories. Love the characters.

This is one of the most outstanding movies and my husband knows and can tell you what their lines are before they say them. Thanks for those five best scenes.
Good Story. Thanks for watching the video Connie.
I think it is Buddy.
Gus McCrae is the best character in any western. Perfectly brought to life by Robert Duval
My sentiments exactly Dan. Thanks for watching the video.
without a doubt! I'm from Texas and never got why you would go to all that to get to Montana. A couple of years ago I road my motorcycle up across the northern states and when I was riding through Montana I remember thinking "I get it now" truly G-ds country
Agreed
If Gus McCrae was the only role Robert Duval ever had he'd still be a legend
I’ve always been fond of Woodrow myself.
@@williamrobinson680 agreed. More like my dad.
This is my favorite Western. The acting. Is superb. The books are great, too..
There is only one novel. It is a great read.
LOVE it when Gus pulls that big Walker. The shot glass scene has always been my favorite of favorites.
Thanks for watching Eric.
Well friend, the Walker-Colt had a lengthy and inconsistent lock-time; a person wood need to be a marksman and a mathematician to shoot glassware from the air.
Duval is on the top of the list for greatest cowboy actors!
Agree 100% Peter. Duvall is my favorite. Thanks for watching the video.
One of the best actors of all time! My all time favorite!
Clint is always number 1 in my book.
Yes him Burt lancaster there was quite alot Robert mitcham lint eastwood and more that really suited westerns
I dont care if it is eight hours long it will always be one of my favorites
A sentiment felt by many, including me. Thanks for watching the video Ben.
Lonesome Dove is a movie that I will never forget and always watch and enjoy I love cowboys
Wonderful movie Lorena.
A true classic Duster. :) I wore out my double VHS copy and had to upgrade to a a DVD copy. 🙂
Such a good series. The way that Robert Duvall and Tommy Bring life to their characters is unmatched to any other I've ever seen!
Uplifting for sure Eric.
@@historymore442 I believe I was born in the wrong time. That way of life is so much more appealing to me. I feel like I belong there. Biscuits and eggs with coffee grounds, and bacon. And even the whacking of the dinner bell. Haha.
@@ericcovington7125 Eric, I have said the same kind of words a while back. Even my parents and grandparents said, "He should have been born before us."
I eventually found true happiness in the late 1960s/early 1970s when I was most fortunate enough to find employment on American oil rigs drilling wildcat wells in the UK North Sea.
But, as August McRae said, according to Larry McMurty - a *truly* great author:
"If you wait, all that happens is you get older ... " [So very, very true!]
"Sometimes you turn away from someone, and then one day you look back, and all of your life has gone by ... " [This line is very special to me!]
"It took me an awful long time and very many wasted years to realise that: yesterday's gone on down the river and you can't get it back."
"What's good for me is not necessarily good for the weak-minded."
*AND* a very pertinent line from old Gus which definitely applies to me now is:
"You ain't gonna take my leg!"
Take care, Eric.
@@henrytree Late 60's? I believe everyone found happiness in the 60's. Haha. I surprised you can remember them. Not many do. Unless they served. Then they will never forget.
Truly one of the best Cowboy stories there is! I'm going to have to watch it again! Thanks for the memories!
It never gets old Mike. Thanks for watching the video.
Only movie I've ever watched that was as good as the book. All four in the series are outstanding but the third, lonesome dove, was the best.
I agree Railroad. Thanks for watching.
I agree with you 100% except it's kind of hard to have a favorite
The early James Bond movies were close to the books.
To Kill a Mockingbird is another example of this. The Godfather, also--another Robert Duvall film.
@@tlhuffman Spot on, sir
I remember watching it on TV on it's original run, truly one of the best westerns ever done with superb acting. It had the ability to draw you into the emotions of each scene.
Excellent for sure Michael. Thanks for watching the video.
Lone Dove is probably the best western ever made. If you like westerns and never watched "Lonesome Dove" you are in for a great western experience.
I 100% agree Darren. My favorite western ever. Tommy Lee Jones was really good, but Robert Duvall was over the top great. Thanks for watching the video.
@Jake Roberts Yep, fantastic role, fantastic acting job. It don't get any better than Robert Duvall as Augustus McCrae.
This is my all time favorite. It touches all aspects of life. And a phenomenal cast!!
Two fine actors. Great movie all around.
Yep here's to the sunny slopes of long ago..my heart goes out to those who never experienced them.
The best line in the whole movie and I believe is a summary of the entire story, was delivered by Gus while in conversation with Call. "It ain't dyin' I'm talkin' about, its livin'.
So many great lines and scenes Paul, it's hard to pick out the best. Thanks for watching the video.
Gus did know how to live, liked to get a "poke" and really knew how to cut cards. Funny how some things wind up going hand in hand with one another...
You are correct! Actually, a lot of the lines came straight from the book. I recommend it-- a fantastic read, and more detailed than the video series.
That was some great acting. I’ve watched Lonesome Dove too many times but it still gets to me.
Agreed! Awesome actors playing awesome character's. The old west was a hard place. Lonesome Dove told it very very well. My personal favorite scene was in the bar. Well done!! 🇺🇸🤠🇺🇸
Yep. In my mind everything is awesome about Lonesome Dove. Thanks for watching MIke.
Never be another one like Gus .. one of a kind
I am in 100%agreement with you.Lonesome Dove is ,by far the Greatest western of all time.I could sit an watch it over an over.I was a young kid when it came out an until this day,Capt.McCrae an Capt.Call are two of my Biggest Heros😁
Yep Andy, It doesn't get any better than Lonesome Dove. Thanks for watching the video.
@@historymore442 I love the fact that Call an Augustus were based on or I should say inspired by the true lives of Mr.Charles Goodnight an Oliver Loving.I have personally visited Oliver Lovings Grave an Bose Ikards Grave in Weatherford Tx,an I've been to Goodnight Tx where Mr.Charles is resting. So much Great history here in Texas.

One of my favorites ❤ Real Men in Real life. If folks were taught manners growing up and practiced that choice with respect and dignity, we would ALL BENEFIT greatly. God fearing, respectfully walking tall and doing the right things. Thanks for the great video 😊
Thank you kindly for posting what is to my mind one of the greatest western classics since the era of the duke.
I certainly agree grey man. Thanks for watching the video.
Best ever western which I have and never get tired of watching.
Best Western of all times love it
I loved LD when it came out and I love it still. I have watched it several times, and plan to watch again. I cry every time Gus dies.
I also loved RtLD, with Coll taking Gus back to LD to bury him, at which I cry again.
Both movies are the best westerns I have ever had the privilege to watch!
Great foe sure Frances. Thanks for watching the video.
Never has there been a better movie made in my time. As a kid I watched Old Yellow and it was always at the top of my list until Lonesome Dove came out.
A great one for sure Donald. Thanks for watching the video.
Good taste in both cases. Old Yoller broke my 10 year old heart tho.
The acting and casting in Lonesome Dove was Amazing.Great Picks on the scenes.
Thanks for watching Delwin.
I have watched this movie several times and can’t wait to watch again. One of the greatest movies of all time
I agree Larry.
I pop the Lonesome Dove mini-series into the video player at least twice a year. Dawdling bartender has always been my favorite scene.
Thanks for watching the video Alika.
Absolutely an ALL TIME FAVORITE! I've seen it countless times since it first appeared. I never tire of the relationship between Gus and Woodrow. Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall were perfect for the parts. Enough Said RDM
For sure RDM. Thanks for watching the video.

This was the best western ever made. Simply excellent in every way!! I think Gus's death bed scene was either one or two for me.
So many great scenes cowboyjim53. Thanks for watching.
I saw the miniseries when I was27; I just read the book a few months ago when I turned 66, both are an excellent work that are a good part of my active memories!
Indeed both are excellent Timothy. Thanks for watching the video.
Lonesome Dove has long been my favorite western movie. When strong men were courageous as bulls! Gus’s mannerisms so closely mimic those of my late great father that it’s downright eerie.
Duvall was born to play Gus. Thanks for watching aerocam2.
Two of the best movie characters to ever be
Well, from the other comments I've read, I'm not alone thinking Lonesome Dove is one of the all time great westerns.
I agree with your picks, they are all good. I think my favorite is when Woodrow takes care of of the guy whipping Knute. Great scene.
Yep that was a good one David. Thanks for watching the video.
Awesome story,I think about it when I draw my .45,Colt saa, outta my holster, unever know when you need to, happy trails, boys!
Best western ever made. I watch it about every two years. never gets old.
I just loved Lonesome Dove - book and series. Perfect casting.
Perfect indeed J A. Thanks for watching the video.
The 4 books are beyond excellent. The minor characters such as Famous Shoes are memorable. A series never to be matched.

Best movie ever! I watch it every couple of years. Never gets old.
One of my absolutely favorite. I agree 100% with your picks.

I loved watching all of The Lonesome Dove series!
Great series Sharon.
Lonesome Dove is also my favorite. I have all five of the DVD’s. Notice, in the bar scene, that Woodrow takes a step back, he knows what Gus is going to do. Thank you for sharing these. Now I have to watch it again.
Yep that was a subtle part of that scene.

My Grandpa talked me into watching it with him in one sitting. He called it his favorite Horsesh!t and Gunsm*ke movie ever. Talked me into reading the book too. Feel the same about the novel, movie and memories as well.
Duvall was born to be Gus. Great actor, great role. Thanks for watching mediamannaman.
In an interview Duvall said Gus was his Hamlet.

One of the Greatsest Westerns Ever Made ❤
Too many favorite scenes to mention, but one that always brings a smile to my heart is the scene where Call is getting onto Gus for bringing 'that sign'.......
Gus is responding by reading it in Latin, or whatever......when Call interrupts and says You don't have a clue what it says"
Yep a good one. Thanks for watching the video Jennifer.
It don't matter what it means.
It just is.
Lonesome dove ranks, pretty close to the top of my list of stories about the old west. It was absolutely spellbinding. Love the characters. Thank you for this. I have to concur. Those are some great scenes!

Yeah Pea Eye was a well done character in LD. thanks for watching John.
To me the best is the final scene when he's looking back over his life! Loved this movie
So many classic scenes bones549. Great movie. Thanks for watching the video.
Good comment Jeff. Thanks for watching the video.
@@samcotter7320 Thanks, good to know that.

I constantly say “Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.” Wise words from Woodrow F. Call.
I can't imagine picking out a half dozen scenes, or a half hundred, ot a half thousand. The whole series from beginning to end was flat out GREAT - GREAT writing, GREAT direction GREAT cast, GREAT acting, GREAT filming
Lonesome Dove is.in a class ALL by itself.
Yep long live LD Sharma.
The scene where call saves newt and dish from that scout gives me chills every time i watch! I LOVE LONESOME DOVE!!
