  • Lonesome Dove is one of the more significant film events of the past 40 years, especially for fans of western themed movies. In this video view 5 classic scenes from the epic series. I have no rights or ownership to any of the video clips used in this video. I just used them to hopefully create an entertaining video.

"I hate rude behavior in a man, I won't tolerate it" Now that's a mighty strong statement about his character. Too bad we don't have a lot more men like that today!! The world just might be a bit better of a place!

Nah. Don’t forget that scene takes place because Call is angry a man is hitting his son. His son he refuses to acknowledge. He’d rather blame rude behavior and violently attack a man then just acknowledge Newt as his son.
So uh.. as a dad myself… no we don’t need more “men like that”. Plus Newt’s desire to seek his fathers approval literally leads to his death. (Spoiler)

The Walker-Colt had a lengthy and inconsistent lock-time; a shooter would have to be a marksman and a mathematician to shoot glassware from the air. Western mythology in film is why Wyatt Earp left Hollywood as a Western Film Advisor; he couldn't stomach the fiction. Personally, I don't care as I see it as entertainment and not documentary.

And living in the San Antonio area I can think back to many a day long ago. As a kid we would go down to the San Antpnio river just south of downtown, was barely a creek in many spots you could literally jump across if it hadn't rain for awhile. It was controlled by the river authority and doesn't become much till you get to Espada park, where theres a dam for the water to build up. Bit of history right there, the aquaducts built by the Spanish (with Indian labor help) in the 1700's and some still carry water to this day, but they irrigated the fields in the area. Several missions in this proximity.
Anyway the river is controlled with the help of a tune of a tunnel some 300 feet down constructed in the 1980's and maybe into the 90's. I've wondered how it ran through town at that time

Never really looked at the cast list initially, but 1st few years, I thought it was Kenny Rodgers & Robert DuVall playing in this & took me by surprise when I found out it was Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy Lee was a good actor in this, just reminded me of Kenny with his looks. Wish he reprised his role in the 2nd, quality just wasn't the same level.

Being a Texan, I love this authentic western! I NEVER understood why Robert Duvall didn't receive the Emmy award for best actor in a dramatic mini series. The award went to another Robert... Robert Mitchum for Winds of War. I'm a fan of Mitchum & saw his portrayal, but it couldn't hold a candle to Duvall's Gus. Lonesome Dove is a classic & it is still watched today. My grandchildren really enjoyed seeing the dvd!! I hate to see the wrong candidate win, much like the best Oscar song for the 2017 films going to the wrong song. "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman deserved the win!!!! The song is still being sung everywhere & it too, will be a classic. I can't even recall the one that won. Long live Lonesome Dove!!!!!!!!🤠

I am a "naive" Texan who learned ALOT about Texas history when I lived there for 4 years (J. Frank Dobie, San Jacinto, Alamo, etc.).
When I visited the John Bryan cabin in Dallas, I asked a worker what was the best history of early post-Civil War Texas, and they recommended "Lonesome Dove". In this case, like "Bonfire of the Vanities" for 1980's NYC, fiction telling the truth better than any history.

Lonesome Dove is simply the best western ever made. There isn't any living actor who could bring Gus McCrae to life. Mr. Duval was his brilliant self in this role. I decided to read the novel after seeing it for the first time. Larry McMurtry became my favorite American author. Nobody could match the characters he created.

My son read the book Lonesome Dove last month and he will have an opportunity to watch it very soon. We met Gus "Robert Duvall" when they were making the movie in Texas. They showed up at a restaurant in Pittsburg, Texas called the Hot Link Stand. I had no idea they were making this great movie. I did get the actor's Robert Duvall autograph...but at the time I did not know the significance. @@ericcovington7125 Eric, I have said the same kind of words a while back. Even my parents and grandparents said, "He should have been born before us."
I eventually found true happiness in the late 1960s/early 1970s when I was most fortunate enough to find employment on American oil rigs drilling wildcat wells in the UK North Sea. Up until then I was at a total loss as to my direction in life.
I met a lot of Men from The West and especially from the Oil States and I immediately felt at home and was welcomed by those men because I respected their way of living. These men seemed to me to be just about the last of the cowboys on the final frontier.
It is all over now and coming to an end. The world is no longer the world it was some 50 or 60 years ago when I joined those Men Of The West and lived amongst them.
But, as August McRae said, according to Larry McMurty - a *truly* great author:
"If you wait, all that happens is you get older ... " [So very, very true!]
"Sometimes you turn away from someone, and then one day you look back, and all of your life has gone by ... " [This line is very special to me!]
"It took me an awful long time and very many wasted years to realise that: yesterday's gone on down the river and you can't get it back."
"What's good for me is not necessarily good for the weak-minded."
*AND* a very pertinent line from old Gus which definitely applies to me now is:
"You ain't gonna take my leg!"
      Take care, Eric.
