Lonesome Dove became one of my absolute favorite westerns the first time i saw it but I had no idea it was based on actual events. Can't begin to thank you enough for this documentary . The next time i watch it , I'll have even greater appreciation , So thank you again Mr.Skinner.
Our ancestors would have know each other. One of mine managed the XIT ranch in the Panhandle. May you always be proud of your ancestors. They did much to help make America.
Love westerns, Lonesome Dove is got to be one of the best westerns ever made, It is my opinion that the cast of that show was the best picked of any movie western made..
michael I agree, absolutely ! The only actor that I feel did not fit in the whole movie was Claire, which was played by Angelica Huston (sp ?) she just appeared to be ACTING which was not natural, like the way she leaned up against the fence in the corral and tipped her hat, and just other little things. Now, she has been good in other productions, it is not that she isn't a good actress, it is just that she didn't fit this movie. Also, she towered over Gus. Everyone else was great !! I truly loved PI he is such a natural, and I've seen him in one other movie which was Fried Green Tomatoes. I guess nobody else seems to have an opinion about Clare.
Come to Texas, especially North Texas and you will find out very quickly that it is real! The City of Ft. Worth is very proud of it's great heritage, and makes no bones about celebrating it. Every Saturday, even in the rain (snow, sleet and ice - no, they will not put the horses nor the cattle out in that weather) they cattle drive the long horns down the center of town. There are all kinds of western shows put on regularly with holiday specials. Weatherford, in Parker County was named for Quannah Parker, whose statue is predominantly displayed full size in bronze at the beginning of the old railroad trailhead in the stockyards. Weatherford is also famous for its peach trees, which are celebrated every September in a wonderful festival on the Courthouse square with every type and variation of peach ice cream, pie, fried pie, or peach concoction there is. Also back in the city of Ft. Worth, Michelin Star Chef Tim Love has his famous Steak house, "Lonesome Dove."
I knew it was because we travel some of that trail to go see my Grandparents. There is a historical marker telling you when you are traveling that strech of trail now a highway.
When "Lonesome Dove " first aired, I said to myself that that gal Lorrie Wood, played by Diane Lane , was gonna be a big star . I said the same thing when "Return to Lonesome Dove " aired and Reese Witherspoon showed her amazing talent .

Thats a fact!!!! His slow deep drawed voice is excellent for this period of our history!!! The people of that era would not tolerate the BS of todays culture for one second!!! Lonesome Dove was a book that was sent to me while I served In the Navy during Desert Storm. I was so lonely there that I thought I would never be able to concentrate on a book especially a book with so many pages. But read it I did. One if not my favorite book ever. I love the story. Working 12 hour shifts I couldn't wait to be back in my cot to read Lonesome Dove. Some where alone the way after getting back home I learned of Goodnight and Loving, the true west I guess. Great history. Thank you Mr. Skinner.
Amazing story...what an epic movie a biography of Charles and Molly would be! Amazing also how the story circles around to the same people and places...from rescuing Clara Parker to giving Quanah and his people a place to stay. What a concept: instead of driving away hungry Natives, Goodnight feeds them and befriends them. A successful and wealthy man who shares with the less fortunate rather than snatching crumbs away from them, wow. And Molly helped to save the buffalo from extinction.
I didn’t realize the “Lonesome Dove” series was actually based on fact. Stands to reason why my husband at the time was so obsessed with the books! Your a great story teller! Loved listening!
Lonesome Dove was a novel by Larry McMurty, one of the best story tellers in American history. You should read all his work. Especially the ones that came before Lonesome Dove, although written afterward.
Mr. Skinner, I am from Weatherford, Texas and I have friends and loved ones buried in that cemetery. I live a few blocks from there. I hear people talk about the "fake old west" often enough and I wonder how they can't know the history and how tough it was in those days. Those men and the men still like them are disappearing and they have left the country to the most spoiled and ungrateful perpetual children as can be imagined, young and old alike. These people could not have lasted a week in the old west. I enjoy all of your offerings and you remind me by your speech of the men who built this nation only to now to be squandered by these unmanly malcontents and weaklings. I appreciate those left to us and I believe that you are one of these men. One correction from another clip, it was "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and not "Who Shot Liberty Valance", (as I am sure that you know). I look forward to all that you do.

Yes this good ole country with the red white blue and the real morales of the history of the real west and the men and women who blazed the the trail for country are all rolling in their graves if only if they could see what has become of the U.S.A. makes you wonder if they would of became the strong legacy they are today. Oh my gosh ..I have heard about the book & the film “ Lonesome Dove”, but this is the first time I have heard the story about these amazing people & their families. It leaves me speechless. I see I live in very different times now where promises, friendship, & family don’t seem to mean a whit to anyone, except very few. I consider myself blessed to see this documentary & learn about these fine folks. It brought tears to my eyes!! 🐂🐂🐂
BarbaraMerry Geng, your so right ! There isn't but very few left that are that way. I don't put much stalk in anyone any more for that reason. I guess, I was lucky enough to grow up in the 50's when there was still quite a few around. It take their word, to mean something, if they said, it they stood by it. They didn't have to swear a oath , that they would be there to do something, all they had to do is say, I'll be there then . You could bank on it , that they would be there or in the hospital or dead. A 75 yr. old Nam Combat vet.
My great grandfather worked for Charles Goodnight. He was the grounds keeper, handy man and carpenter for the ranch. His family lived in a little house across from the Goodnight house that still stands today. My great aunt who died in 2015 at 105 used to tell me stories about life on the ranch and colonel Goodnight.

Being raised in Texas, I was told the story of Cynthia Ann Parker's capture by the Comanches. This I was told happened near Weatherford, TX. Just miles from Ft. Worth. I remember seeing cattle covering the plains so thick it was unreal. They kept the longhorns on one side of hwy. 80, and hundreds of Herefords on the other side. On my mothers side the Morgans had family reunions at Tintop south of Weatherford. I heard stories of the heroic Rangers. Amazing men in history. My great great great grand father was Daniel Morgan who fought at the Cowpen war. Very proud of history...only wish our children now days were taught REAL American history and what our ancestors went through to create our country. They might have greater respect for our country.

This was so fascinating to hear - and it felt like we were just sitting around the campfire talking about days gone by. But what makes it personal for me is that I live just 14 miles from Quanah, Texas (my daughter lives there) so we knew a lot of stories about Quanah Parker. I've also seen the movie(s) Lonesome Dove and knew about Charlie Goodnight and all that. What I DIDN'T know was that the two were all apart of one bigger story. Just amazing! So many times when we are driving into town from where we live, I look out across the broad expanse of open land, and try to imagine what it was like for people back in those days. Like when the temperatures reach 115F in the summer or -15F in the winter. The constant dry winds and tornadoes!!! Thank you so much, Mr. Skinner for this documentary!
Amy, There is a new book about Quanah Parker called ""Empire of the Summer Moon" that is fascinating and spellbinding, especially being from this area (I'm in Amarillo). I could spend days at Panhandle Plains Historical Museum on the campus of WTAMU IN Canyon, TX. Larry
Those were some tough hombres back then. He went through all that to die of gangrene ave even that took almost a month to do him in. This is the type of history that should be taught in schools. It gives a good sense of what it took to make this country livable.

As a Texan, I have always read as much history about the people who actually lived the history which made our Lone Star State what she is today. It took all kinds to make this stew. As a boy, I was always wide eyed amazed at those stories, and I was often lucky enough in my Little Town to have an old farmer, or old cowboy, to tell me those stories! I have nothing but respect for our history, but as a government controlled state, that in itself is as An amazing story! You couldn’t make up a story any more exciting than the story that Texas Rising tells. The fight for Texas Independence! It is actually several battles combined, that make up that story. Somehow, y’all left it out of the lineup, when you were talking about all the battles that Cowboys have fought in.
Very brave and strong people. And Molly saving the bison for future generations just sums these wonderful people. The story is tinged with sadness for what became of the local Indians, but again the Goodnight's showed the kind of people they were by befriending Qannah Parker and allowing his people to stay on what had been their ancestral land. Hat off to these people.
Me too, it's an American Classic rivaling, Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. It's better to me. Pulitzer prize winning novel. I read the whole series of books. They are excellent. Lonesome DOve is the classic. Dead Man's Walk is the first chronologically and introduces the characters Gus and Woodrow when they were young just becoming Texas Rangers. Then Comanche Moon and then Lonesome Dove and then Streets of Laredo. Really sad ending to the whole series.

I've often wondered what inspired the Lonesome Dove story and now I know. Thank you. However, Hollywood's rendition is what it is. Just another story inflated with the fiction added for the sensational effect. But then, both Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones's portrayal and the writing of the story and its script were one of the industry's greatest accomplishments.

Don't know that I agree. Yes, it's a great movie, but so are Open Range and Broken Trail. Both with Duvall as the lead actor. They're like a kind of western trilogy.
Born in 1943 off the High Plains, down in Knox Co. Tex., but with an aunt and uncle in nearby Canyon, I partially 'grew up' on the plains, in the Palo Duro Canyon , and at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum. As a boy in the museum I would see photos, stories and licensees of Col Goodnight, and his buffalo and longhorn heard in the Canyon. As a young man I got married and did my Masters research in the Canyons. Been to his first year dugout and his house at Goodnight. Thanks so much Jerry for this documentary and all your others. Priceless! There's no greater personality in the Texas Panhandle bigger than Col. Goodnight.

+Walter Grigat I cannot honestly say I have heard of it, however, I do know that a lot of my ancestors left Ireland and headed both west, and in my case, east to Scotland. I know there are Beatties who farm in the Keoma and Calgary area, it is maybe possible one of them wrote it. Thank you for the information regarding the book, will have a look at it.
This was my favorite western novel and movie out of all of them. The story of these two men and good friends is a priceless piece of American history. I've read McMurtry's book twice and watched the tv production Lonesome Dove so many time I can't even count them. Thank you Jerry for the true story of Lonesome Dove, I love it.
Hi Lois! I have read Lonesome Dove six times and mini-series also too many times to count. What woman doesn't want a GUS McCrae in her life! Funny story I read: A family confessed they were so devoted to Lonesome Dove that no one could marry into the family until they read the book and watched the series!
I didn't know that Lonesome Dove was based on Goodnight and Loving. I read about them when I was a kid. Our children aren't being taught history anymore. They don't realize what it took to make this country. Today's history is, there was the civil war, then WWI, then WWII, then Viet Nam. In between that nothing happened. Teachers aren't allowed to TEACH. They must follow pre-approved doctrine that assures uniformity, not free thought.

According to McMurtry, Gus and Call *were not modeled after historical characters* , but there are similarities with real-life cattle drivers Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving.

@@webleypug Those were hard days that you don't really want to live. I am 72 years old. My daddy was born in 1901. My mother was born in 1905. I heard my mother tell me stories that would curdle your blood. In this part of the country, there was hardly any civilization even in the early 1900's. I know I'm glad I didn't have to live back then. I appreciate all the modern conveniences of today. Doctors were scarce. Medicine was scarce. People died at an early age. I'll take today over then anytime!

Rich Grahn I have VHS recordings of the original showing of the mini-series. Commercials and all, but now-a-days I watch Lonesome Dove on DVD. 2 weeks ago I went to pick up my granddaughter in Colorado, we went past Ogallala, I was like a kids and I had got the best gift of my life, just by seeing that town. HUGE Lonesome Dove fan.

All of this has a special place in my heart because a friend of mine suffered the same fate as Gus did in the movie but in these times. His immune system had been wrecked and an infection had got into his left leg. He would not allow them to remove the leg which ultimately led to his death. I still love this story even if it does hit close to home.
Thank You Jerry Skinner! I have actually traveled to those very same places to see where the history makers once lived and traveled. I worked for the Parker County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years, so I drove through the Greenwood Cemetery many times just to pay my respects to Oliver Loving and Bose Ikard. I have also stopped by the Goodnight Cemetery several times to pay my respects to the Goodnights’. The history just comes alive along with your imagination when you visit those places. I’ve also been to Palo Duro Canyon and the Panhandle Pains Museum. It’s such a great story when you look past the Hollywood story of Lonesome Dove. However Lonesome Dove is still to this day, the best western movie ever made.
Thank you Jerry, Quality as usual. I always had trouble trying to reconcile the dates of Lonesome dove series, but you tied it up real well. The partners difference in age really did go along with the movie. Those folks saw a century of history between the two of them.

I,m about 15yrs. late on watching, but it makes no less one of the most interesting stories. As others have already said, I had no idea this was a true story. Your narrating is wonderful, and with your accent it makes it sound,like you had been with them. Not making fun of your speech, I was born in Ok, and my 3rd Grt. Grandfather was, 1st 300 colonist to the territory, now TX.

2022 and I just watched Lonesome Dove for the first time. A better 6hrs I haven't spent in a long while. Came to watch this after. Thank you for posting this and giving honour to some fine men.
Thanks for sharing this with us, Mr. Skinner. I just watched a program about the start of the National Zoo and how it was people like the Goodnight's who helped to save a species when Mrs. Goodnight fed those starving buffalo calves . Thank those few who saved and concealed the remnants (and genetics )of the American Bison so our children can see them today and in the future. In fact, the Zoo's herd has increase in number enough that they are being released in small herds on some of the Indian Reservations to continue to grow in numbers.
Jerry, what a very interesting clip on Lonesome Dove. My husband was addicted to these movies. After he became ill, the movies were played on a daily bases, and I had no choice but watch them with him. I'm German born and raised, and as a child I loved American western movies. None ever were as good as Lonesome Dove. My husband would have loved this documentary about Lonesome Dove. Thank you for posting this. BTW, I now live in Texas.
I’m sorry but you are mistaken... The rangers who were portrayed in Lonesome Dove were actually ranger Edward Dixon Westfall and ranger Captain George “Bigfoot” Wallace from the San Antonio area If you go the the main branch of the San Antonio library you’ll find the hand written journals of Westfall. In them he writes about their dealings with the notorious Indian outlaw they tracked nicknamed Bigfoot, (aka Blue duck in Lonesome Dove) Also in the journals is the recount of Westfall being attacked by Indians and having to crawl wounded for miles back to the cabin. These are the Texas Rangers the Lonesome Dove characters are modeled after
I had watched this documentary a couple of years ago but enjoyed watching it again.These men back then truly had "true grit" Thanks Jerry for the work and research you do.
My great grandfather, E.P. Byler, went up the "old cow trail" as he called it a half dozen times starting in 1868-69. He once got as far as North Dakota. His story and his brother's, James Byler story can be found in the book "Trail Drivers of Texas". It was first printed in the early 1900's and reprinted in 1993. He wrote that he was lucky and never encountered Indians on his drives but saw many grave markers that said "Killed by Indians" along his various routes. The impression I got was they sold mostly to Indian Reservations. There is an old cowboy song titled "Git Along Little Dogies" and the words say "You'll be soup of Uncle Sam's Indians".

The only actor that I feel did not fit in the whole movie was Claire, which was played by Angelica Huston (sp ?) she just appeared to be ACTING which was not natural, like the way she leaned up against the fence in the corral and tipped her hat, and just other little things. Now, she has been good in other productions, it is not that she isn't a good actress, it is just that she didn't fit this movie. Also, she towered over Gus. Everyone else was great !! I truly loved PI he is such a natural, and I've seen him in one other movie which was Fried Green Tomatoes. I guess nobody else seems to have an opinion about Clare.

Come to Texas, especially North Texas and you will find out very quickly that it is real! The City of Ft. Worth is very proud of it's great heritage, and makes no bones about celebrating it. Every Saturday, even in the rain (snow, sleet and ice - no, they will not put the horses nor the cattle out in that weather) they cattle drive the long horns down the center of town. There are all kinds of western shows put on regularly with holiday specials. Weatherford, in Parker County was named for Quannah Parker, whose statue is predominantly displayed full size in bronze at the beginning of the old railroad trailhead in the stockyards. Weatherford is also famous for its peach trees, which are celebrated every September in a wonderful festival on the Courthouse square with every type and variation of peach ice cream, pie, fried pie, or peach concoction there is. Also back in the city of Ft. Worth, Michelin Star Chef Tim Love has his famous Steak house, "Lonesome Dove."
I knew it was because we travel some of that trail to go see my Grandparents. There is a historical marker telling you when you are traveling that strech of trail now a highway.

Lonesome Dove was a book that was sent to me while I served In the Navy during Desert Storm. I was so lonely there that I thought I would never be able to concentrate on a book especially a book with so many pages. But read it I did. One if not my favorite book ever. I love the story. Working 12 hour shifts I couldn't wait to be back in my cot to read Lonesome Dove. Some where alone the way after getting back home I learned of Goodnight and Loving, the true west I guess. Great history. Thank you Mr. Skinner.

Amazing story...what an epic movie a biography of Charles and Molly would be! Amazing also how the story circles around to the same people and places...from rescuing Clara Parker to giving Quanah and his people a place to stay. What a concept: instead of driving away hungry Natives, Goodnight feeds them and befriends them. A successful and wealthy man who shares with the less fortunate rather than snatching crumbs away from them, wow. And Molly helped to save the buffalo from extinction.

Lonesome Dove was a novel by Larry McMurty, one of the best story tellers in American history. You should read all his work. Especially the ones that came before Lonesome Dove, although written afterward.
Mr. Skinner, I am from Weatherford, Texas and I have friends and loved ones buried in that cemetery. I live a few blocks from there. I hear people talk about the "fake old west" often enough and I wonder how they can't know the history and how tough it was in those days. Those men and the men still like them are disappearing and they have left the country to the most spoiled and ungrateful perpetual children as can be imagined, young and old alike. These people could not have lasted a week in the old west.
I enjoy all of your offerings and you remind me by your speech of the men who built this nation only to now to be squandered by these unmanly malcontents and weaklings. I appreciate those left to us and I believe that you are one of these men. Oh my gosh ..I have heard about the book & the film “ Lonesome Dove”, but this is the first time I have heard the story about these amazing people & their families. It leaves me speechless. I see I live in very different times now where promises, friendship, & family don’t seem to mean a whit to anyone, except very few. I consider myself blessed to see this documentary & learn about these fine folks. It brought tears to my eyes!! 🐂🐂🐂

It take their word, to mean something, if they said, it they stood by it. They didn't have to swear a oath , that they would be there to do something, all they had to do is say, I'll be there then . You could bank on it , that they would be there or in the hospital or dead.

My great grandfather worked for Charles Goodnight. He was the grounds keeper, handy man and carpenter for the ranch. His family lived in a little house across from the Goodnight house that still stands today. My great aunt who died in 2015 at 105 used to tell me stories about life on the ranch and colonel Goodnight.

Great History Lesson.
Being raised in Texas, I was told the story of Cynthia Ann Parker's capture by the Comanches. This I was told happened near Weatherford, TX. Just miles from Ft. Worth.
I remember seeing cattle covering the plains so thick it was unreal. They kept the longhorns on one side of hwy. 80, and hundreds of Herefords on the other side. On my mothers side the Morgans had family reunions at Tintop south of Weatherford. I heard stories of the heroic Rangers. Amazing men in history.
My great great great grand father was Daniel Morgan who fought at the Cowpen war. Very proud of history...only wish our children now days were taught REAL American history and what our ancestors went through to create our country. They might have greater respect for our country.
You are correct. I live 15 miles north of Weatherford in Springtown Texas, there is a lot of history in this area.
I live close to Cowpens SC and know who D Morgan is.
The idea of a ranger is cool, but don't call them heroic. They didn't 'create' a country, they were British conquerors in a race war.

Such an amazing bit of history, superbly told by Mr. Skinner. Thank you for creating and sharing all these tales of American history. It’s truly amazing the hardships our forefathers endured, without complaint, to build this country.
This was so fascinating to hear - and it felt like we were just sitting around the campfire talking about days gone by. But what makes it personal for me is that I live just 14 miles from Quanah, Texas (my daughter lives there) so we knew a lot of stories about Quanah Parker. I've also seen the movie(s) Lonesome Dove and knew about Charlie Goodnight and all that. What I DIDN'T know was that the two were all apart of one bigger story. Just amazing! So many times when we are driving into town from where we live, I look out across the broad expanse of open land, and try to imagine what it was like for people back in those days. Like when the temperatures reach 115F in the summer or -15F in the winter. The constant dry winds and tornadoes!!! Thank you so much, Mr. Skinner for this documentary!

Have you seen Charlie's dugout shelter in Palo Duro? Given the summer storms and blue northers that can hit, and he would camp out in that thing.
Those were some tough hombres back then. He went through all that to die of gangrene ave even that took almost a month to do him in. This is the type of history that should be taught in schools. It gives a good sense of what it took to make this country livable.

As a Texan, I have always read as much history about the people who actually lived the history which made our Lone Star State what she is today.
It took all kinds to make this stew.
As a boy, I was always wide eyed amazed at those stories, and I was often lucky enough in my Little Town to have an old farmer, or old cowboy, to tell me those stories!
I have nothing but respect for our history, but as a government controlled state, that in itself is as An amazing story! You couldn’t make up a story any more exciting than the story that Texas Rising tells.

The story is tinged with sadness for what became of the local Indians, but again the Goodnight's showed the kind of people they were by befriending Qannah Parker and allowing his people to stay on what had been their ancestral land.

Me too, it's an American Classic rivaling, Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. It's better to me. Pulitzer prize winning novel. I read the whole series of books. They are excellent. Lonesome DOve is the classic. Dead Man's Walk is the first chronologically and introduces the characters Gus and Woodrow when they were young just becoming Texas Rangers. Then Comanche Moon and then Lonesome Dove and then Streets of Laredo. Really sad ending to the whole series.

I've often wondered what inspired the Lonesome Dove story and now I know. Thank you. However, Hollywood's rendition is what it is. Just another story inflated with the fiction added for the sensational effect. But then, both Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones's portrayal and the writing of the story and its script were one of the industry's greatest accomplishments.

Don't know that I agree. Yes, it's a great movie, but so are Open Range and Broken Trail. Both with Duvall as the lead actor. They're like a kind of western trilogy.

Born in 1943 off the High Plains, down in Knox Co. Tex., but with an aunt and uncle in nearby Canyon, I partially 'grew up' on the plains, in the Palo Duro Canyon , and at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum. As a boy in the museum I would see photos, stories and licensees of Col Goodnight, and his buffalo and longhorn heard in the Canyon. As a young man I got married and did my Masters research in the Canyons. Been to his first year dugout and his house at Goodnight. Thanks so much Jerry for this documentary and all your others. Priceless! There's no greater personality in the Texas Panhandle bigger than Col. Goodnight.

This was my favorite western novel and movie out of all of them. The story of these two men and good friends is a priceless piece of American history. I didn't know that Lonesome Dove was based on Goodnight and Loving. I read about them when I was a kid. Our children aren't being taught history anymore. They don't realize what it took to make this country. Today's history is, there was the civil war, then WWI, then WWII, then Viet Nam. In between that nothing happened. Teachers aren't allowed to TEACH. They must follow pre-approved doctrine that assures uniformity, not free thought.

I heard my mother tell me stories that would curdle your blood. In this part of the country, there was hardly any civilization even in the early 1900's. I know I'm glad I didn't have to live back then. I appreciate all the modern conveniences of today. Doctors were scarce. Medicine was scarce. People died at an early age. I'll take today over then anytime!

Commercials and all, but now-a-days I watch Lonesome Dove on DVD. 2 weeks ago I went to pick up my granddaughter in Colorado, we went past Ogallala, I was like a kids and I had got the best gift of my life, just by seeing that town. HUGE Lonesome Dove fan.

All of this has a special place in my heart because a friend of mine suffered the same fate as Gus did in the movie but in these times. His immune system had been wrecked and an infection had got into his left leg. He would not allow them to remove the leg which ultimately led to his death. I still love this story even if it does hit close to home.

Thank You Jerry Skinner! I have actually traveled to those very same places to see where the history makers once lived and traveled. I worked for the Parker County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years, so I drove through the Greenwood Cemetery many times just to pay my respects to Oliver Loving and Bose Ikard. I have also stopped by the Goodnight Cemetery several times to pay my respects to the Goodnights’. The history just comes alive along with your imagination when you visit those places. I’ve also been to Palo Duro Canyon and the Panhandle Pains Museum. It’s such a great story when you look past the Hollywood story of Lonesome Dove. However Lonesome Dove is still to this day, the best western movie ever made.

Thank you Jerry, Quality as usual. I always had trouble trying to reconcile the dates of Lonesome dove series, but you tied it up real well. The partners difference in age really did go along with the movie. Those folks saw a century of history between the two of them.

One of the best movies ever made. Dead man's walk is also very good. It's lonesome dove when they were young men. Great movie as well.

I,m about 15yrs. late on watching, but it makes no less one of the most interesting stories. As others have already said, I had no idea this was a true story. Your narrating is wonderful, and with your accent it makes it sound,like you had been with them. Not making fun of your speech, I was born in Ok, and my 3rd Grt. Grandfather was, 1st 300 colonist to the territory, now TX.

2022 and I just watched Lonesome Dove for the first time. A better 6hrs I haven't spent in a long while. Came to watch this after. Thank you for posting this and giving honour to some fine men.
Thanks for sharing this with us, Mr. Skinner. I just watched a program about the start of the National Zoo and how it was people like the Goodnight's who helped to save a species when Mrs. Goodnight fed those starving buffalo calves . Thank those few who saved and concealed the remnants (and genetics )of the American Bison so our children can see them today and in the future. In fact, the Zoo's herd has increase in number enough that they are being released in small herds on some of the Indian Reservations to continue to grow in numbers.

Jerry, what a very interesting clip on Lonesome Dove. My husband was addicted to these movies. After he became ill, the movies were played on a daily bases, and I had no choice but watch them with him. I'm German born and raised, and as a child I loved American western movies. None ever were as good as Lonesome Dove. My husband would have loved this documentary about Lonesome Dove. Thank you for posting this. BTW, I now live in Texas.

I’m sorry but you are mistaken...
The rangers who were portrayed in Lonesome Dove were actually ranger Edward Dixon Westfall and ranger Captain George “Bigfoot” Wallace from the San Antonio area
If you go the the main branch of the San Antonio library you’ll find the hand written journals of Westfall. In them he writes about their dealings with the notorious Indian outlaw they tracked nicknamed Bigfoot, (aka Blue duck in Lonesome Dove)
Also in the journals is the recount of Westfall being attacked by Indians and having to crawl wounded for miles back to the cabin.
These are the Texas Rangers the Lonesome Dove characters are modeled after
I had watched this documentary a couple of years ago but enjoyed watching it again.These men back then truly had "true grit" Thanks Jerry for the work and research you do.
My great grandfather, E.P. Byler, went up the "old cow trail" as he called it a half dozen times starting in 1868-69. He once got as far as North Dakota. His story and his brother's, James Byler story can be found in the book "Trail Drivers of Texas". It was first printed in the early 1900's and reprinted in 1993. He wrote that he was lucky and never encountered Indians on his drives but saw many grave markers that said "Killed by Indians" along his various routes. The impression I got was they sold mostly to Indian Reservations. There is an old cowboy song titled "Git Along Little Dogies" and the words say "You'll be soup of Uncle Sam's Indians".

I enjoyed the book and series Lonesome Dove. The history is even more interesting. I had kin in Weatherford, many buried there. These West TX folk are of such strong stock and grit. Thanks for this video.
