Elite Dangerous is the space opera we can all play. As a player of the original Elite and a reader of much SF, this game to me is the seat from which I get to participate in the telling of a galaxy spanning storey. This is rare if not unique in gaming and is comparable to reading a long running series of books over many years. Those who have criticised the game for being a mile wide and an inch deep have no idea what they are talking about. Thanks for your work and your comments mirror my thoughts closely.

My frustration with it years ago was that you couldn't work this stuff out on your own 90% of the time.
There was no in game mission to investigate them and you had to record the beacon's scream and put it through an audiograph program on the internet or on your computer. I'm sure that was thrilling for the first people to ever do it but the rest of us had to copy them. How was anyone meant to find this out? The same goes for the map the scream displayed being difficult to understand, the buried thargoid titans and the guardians.
Elite felt like I was an NPC in a singleplayer game where the protagonist was years ahead of me.

The way I see it Elite’s mysteries are “real” mysteries. They make no effort to make themselves known to you, but they are there. This to some is a special aspect of the game, to some it’s a frustration. I think fdev made the decision even with its faults in mind

I commented and then went and played elite again for the first time in years. Banked 6 hours and I enjoyed it. I have my serious gripes with the game but I wish the tools we use were in game. And I wish there was an in game prompt (not hand holding) telling you what sort of game it is and what sort of mysteries it contains. Like stuff in galnet news or comments from an NPC, more unidentified signal sources, anything! Otherwise 90% of the playerbase misses out.

Veteran Elite Player here from the Pill Capsule Beta days. This game can only be explained as a feeling. Even recently I have gotten back into elite to run some of the background simulations in an effort to shut off one of the most needed and important..... well, we will get to that when it happens :)
I have started out and technically still am using Elite as well for the continuing story of my channel lore with currently 3 parts out, with the 4th being what sets up the escape of elite in the 5th. This game IS A FEELING! When i explain to people that I love going out into the void to explore to my hearts desire it just itches something special, despite 99% of it just being the black void, its that 1% that I hold onto.
Its that 1% that got me and another to be the very first people to discover Stolon Trees and Gyro Trees, permanently putting our names out there and it will be that 1% again on some upcoming journeys that I am taking to the most absolute desolate forgotten places of the galaxy that will put my commander name into the stars as the first.
Elite, I WILL FIND YOUR SECRETS~! And when there are no more secrets.... then we already have plans to force you to talk about us. Death to your bubble, death to your super powers and giant middle finger coming to all pilots across the game.
GET OUT THERE COMMANDERS! The void calls.

As someone with hands on experience maintaining an MMO as a dev, I can tell you Frontier's ways aren't particularly unconventional, and almost everything about how the game has been handled after Horizons felt painfully familiar to the broken mess that company put me on. Either Thargoid content is coming back, or the game is shutting down, you can place your bets. Normally the latter would be an insane outcome after such a massive surge in active players, but we live in an era where even successful games are killed by execs. Best of luck to this one. Very good video CMDR. Thanks. I started in 2018. Way before the first hyperdiction. It was Guardian module season. I did it all. From killing my first Scout to soloing an Interceptor in my meta Chieftain. All the way up to "soloing" Cocijo to get those 6 sweet SCO's. Great times. Funny, I earned my Carrier cash during that gold rush as you did. Kept hauling right to the end making a cool 10 billion. Plenty for the FC and years of upkeep. Now it's chill time. Adding the new ships to the pit of 30 fully engineered ones. Looking forward to what's coming. Anyways, see you out there. o7

I was also there when the final heart of the Titan over Earth (I can't pronounce the darn thing either! :P ) blew up. I can't say I did anything special. But I was pumping missiles into the main heat vent when the notification went up and so I guess I did my part. 24 hours later I was there when the final big boom happened.
I'm about to go on an exploration expedition in celebration of Apollo 14 (have already been on Distant Worlds 2, Apollo 15, Wild Wild West, and Passage to Andromeda expeditions. So this feels like taking off the combat boots and slipping on a pair of beloved old sneakers. I'll keep up to date with things back in the bubble of course. I've developed a taste over the last few months for things I thought I would never bother with - including ground combat!

I started playing in 2018 after a friend brought me in. We played for the next couple of years, building our ranks, banks, and shipyards. And then, out of nowhere, Fdev canceled console support. I was crushed. I had a brand new hotas set up and re arranged my entire play area for the game. But I didn't have a PC till 2024, when I built my first PC and installed the game right in time to take part of Cojico. I had only killed 1 or 2 Cyclops' before that and it's been unreal learning how much has changed in the few years I was away. Still learning a lot about on foot side of the game and my carrier needs some attention, but it's good to be back. Although I have a couple more kids, a full-time job, and other great games I'm playing, I will be here for whatever comes next in 2025! o7 commanders.

It seems like the next step for Elite Dangerous is to expand outwards again with player colonization, which is something I have always wanted in the game- more player control. I fought in the Thargoid War for a bit and was even there way back in 2017 or so when the Thargoids just entered the game. I remember being in Merope with the barnacles and getting interdicted for the first time. Currently I'm heading over the Colonia to go see something new but also my canon reason is my character got exhausted from the war and wants to start a new life on the frontier. I'm really excited for player colonization as I want to see more fringe bubbles and colonies throughout the milkyway.

I tried giving it a go recently on PC when this titan thing started but the game was totally unrecognizable to me now.

Man... you are so very right about each player's personal story.
I remember the ups and downs of my time in this game - oh so many downs. But I remember the ups, too.
My first Cobra MkIII. Flying it for ground salvage ops when the SRV came out.
The oh so eccentric Keelback, my first ship with a fighter hangar.
Grinding imperial rep for a cutter, and mining my ass off in a python to afford it.
And then the Great Mainani Massacre - when the introduction of wing missions and a minor local confict of two irrelevant backwater systems 150 LY from the bubble produced a profit potential so massive the playerbase smelled blood in the void and descended upon these systems like an entire swarm of hungry sharks, with double digit numbers of fleet carriers in this one system that is strategically irrelevant... the first TRUE test of my cutter. She's is still out there. Waiting for me to come back and take a seat at the helm of this distinguished war machine once more.

While I didn't start it, that honour falls to Selene Stardragon and Psykit, being there to help Selene push Operation Wychhunt was wonderful and I'm honoured to have been able to help lead it. Of course like, we were sure we would never *stop* the Proteus Wave from firing... but we delayed it by 2 whole weeks!
Azimuth Biotech, who called my once favourite system of T Tauri home, now barely hold any influence *anywhere* and are still fairly isolated (as far as I know, it's admittedly been a while).
The fact that we, a small group of streamers and players, were able to rile up such a fuss and cause such a disruption to that minor faction, that FDev actually canonized us AND "delayed the plans" by two weeks because of us is mind boggling. You don't get that in other games!
Of course, we don't know what happens next. They've said the Thargoid story isn't over, the plot thread that Salvation is possibly still out there hasn't been tied up yet, among many other things... I don't think we'll see the end of this soon but I'm excited to see what Elite does next.

i started playing during the final days of the war at the invitation of a friend who had been playing for years. pretty much as soon as I finished the tutorial, he invited me to multicrew on his ship to do a bombing run on cocijo as there was only two hearts left and he wanted me to experience it before it was gone forever. i was in charge of the caustic sinks, pulse neutralizer, torpedoes, and multicannons. took a few runs but eventually i got the hang of it and we got a few good bombing runs in.
fast forward a few days later to when the final heart is destroyed and me and my friend are racing to get me enough money to buy and outfit a diamondback explorer to do rescue runs on the titan. I scrape together the bare minimum but timezone differences mean I have to attempt my first couple runs solo. they go exactly as you'd expect: I die in hyperspace interdiction on my way to the titan or die to interceptors before I can figure out how exactly to use my new rescue modules.
the next evening, there are only a few hours left before meltdown but my friend is able to hop on for a little while to show me how it works. we do a couple runs together and I get the hang of it, but my very limited cargo space means I can't carry many pods. he has to hop off again to sleep but is planning on waking up watch the meltdown. I continue doing runs until there's less than an hour left. I know I can only do one more run and I want to make it count. I use all the credits I just made to buy and outfit an asp explorer with all the modules from my diamondback and as much cargo space as I can manage and have just enough left over to cover one rebuy. I know heat is gonna be an issue but it's idling at 21%. i know i can get it below 20 by keeping some modules switched off and I know the thargoids aren't super aggressive now anyway so I figure fuck it: one last run.
I get into the titan no issues and start rescuing. I'm goinf as fast as I can. my friend joins up minutes before the titan explodes and is surprised to see me flying an asp. I almost manage to fill up my cargo with seconds left on the counter, so my friend tells me to pull back so we can watch the fireworks. I start to move out but somehow I pull aggro on a thargoid ship. I make a break for the asteroid field while my friend desperately tries to get the ship off me. I dont have shields so my hull is melting quickly. I have single digit hull integrity when i make it to safety with a repair limpet from my friend keeping me alive. Not sure how I made it out with literally two seconds left, I dont even have time to fully swing my ship around before we're blasted back out through the caustic storm.
...and I had my caustic sinks turned off to lower my heat. I blow up the moment i hit the cloud.
10/10, no better intro to this game

I have played on and off for almost all of E:D's lifespan, but I really got into the game around Horizon. The launch of Odyssey is still the only time I have ever seen a DLC reduce the amount of players instead of increase it. I remember Colonia finally getting engineers, and my favorite CG was the building of the Colonia Bridge, even though it seems all those mega ships were just kind of abandoned by players in the years since. The jump drives you got for delivering materials were the best in the game until the introduction of SCO, and especially the introduction of the double engineered SCO drives after the last Titan exploded. Now I have a Mandalay with a casual 80ly jump range, outclassing my little DBX I've been flying for years quite handily while still having more modules. I've also basically stopped flying my Type 9 in favor of my Type 8, just for the better feel and faster flight and landing times. It's so strange seeing how the game has changed over time, and coming back to the game after a long break is usually a little disorienting.

I actually didn't have the materials (or experience) to do engineering when Cocijo became bombable, so I did my titan bombing in an un-engineered Krait MKII.
With most of my modules disabled (including weapons and power dist.) until the vents opened, I was able to get to a spot where I could sneak up to a vent 20% heat without silent running.
I could take out 4-5 vents per a run consistently with silent running and heat sinks throughout the run, and made around 4-6mil per run.
And with materials to synthesize sinks between runs and a repair limpet controller, I actually managed to get to top 25% contributors in my little Krait MKII.
It was difficult, but fun. I feel like the whole, "you need engineering"/"you need THIS build" thing kinda put off some people to participating in atleast bombing during this event.

I can't believe this chapter came to an end. I just got my carrier when the Colonia Bridge got built, still have my Brewer decal for helping it. Then this happened, the Proteus Wave. Days after we found the Stargoids. I was helping Canonn with tracking these things. Weeks before their arrival, I saw all 8 of them in the skies above the Guardian sites, when I gathered stuff for the war. The day of the invasion was so overwhelming. Hundreds of systems destroyed, billions of people in danger, and they were just overpowering every of our defenses. I thought we'd be using the Colonia Bridge but then it slowed down. We won more and more battles and for me it got too boring. But seeing Titans explode was so surreal. The major attack on ShinDez, and then the last push on Sol. Even went online just to see the final minutes of the war. To know that there will be new generations of players who will only hear our war stories from the time the Thargoids invaded our systems, see remnants of the devastation... This makes ED so special
