I agree wholeheartedly with you and others about the Payne's Gray with metallics. One thing I'd like to see in a video is for you to go back and review the steps by which you make some particularly wonderful piece like that one, and then repeat the same process as much as possible, while achieving as many different results as possible. For instance, substituting different colors, or different levels of contrast, or different-weight applications of paint for one of the steps. Maybe it's just me, but I like both open-ended play and focused refinement and exploration of a given technique I've discovered from that play. One benefit is that I can end up with a spectrum of thematically-related outcomes that I can use in other projects, regardless of which colors and other elements I end up working with for final art work. Also, over time, I feel I gain greater control of the medium by alternating between the playful and focused modes of making art. Only a suggestion, but I'd really love to see more of the type of paper you made with that Payne's Gray/metallic combination. It's quite lush!
This is a wonderful idea! And I appreciate you taking the time to leave me such thoughtful feedback. And any excuse to work more with that color combo... I'll take it!
Thank you so much Jennifer I really really enjoyed and appreciate watching you creating these beautiful and stunning print’s on the Gelli Plate. I really really love ❤️ everyone of the print’s. I absolutely adore watching you. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤
Just me again .... Another great video ...my preference is always longer videos so yours have been right up my alley. And the mix of real time and sped up is great also. In regards to the envelopes I keep any that I get, and keep them intact and print and paint on them. Then put a group of them bound together in different ways. First things first you’re easy to listen to. I watch another You Tuber and she constantly laughs after almost everything she says and I find it distracting. She does beautiful work but…. I constantly cleaned my plate after each application; watching your process freed me up from trying for perfection. I would lay paint down with a lot of consideration, and while the results were pleasing, I wasn’t getting the look I was after. Your use of previously used prints to reprint on and how to use the brayer correctly. Overall I got A LOT from watching you, I’m a fan. 🙂
Thanks again for you comments, Renee! I have a few different gel plate videos and I hope you are able to watch all of them in hopes to continue that inspiration! I am a huge fan of letting that paint pile up on the plate in order to create those unexpected layers! I’m glad you’ve been experimenting with that. Also- that means you’re using all the paint and not throwing it away! 💕💕💕
I m enjoying your videos! I’m totally addicted to gelli printing. I really like to pull a bunch of backgrounds, like you did before. And my plate starts to build up paint. Then I get so many interesting prints with crusty bits on my prints. It’s so pretty. So, in the beginning, I just let it get dirty. You are on the right track. My favorite color is rainbow, but indigo is also one of my favorites too! If I get too much paint then I’ll just brayer it off onto a clean paper for a background. Save that for later. It’s so fun to meet other artists who love gel printing as much as I do. Thank you so much. I enjoyed your video.
Hi, Karen! We sound very similar in the way we print and use our extra paints, etc! I agree, it’s so nice to find others who enjoy these same things. Even when you mentioned “crusty bits” of paint, I could totally relate and I LOVE those unexpected paint combinations and layered goodness! Thanks for commenting and I look forward to connecting with you more in the future!
Enjoyed your video. Thank you! And I have subscribed to your channel. I work with jelly plates making background paper all the time and you never know what you might learn from somebody even though you think you've seen it all! Just wanted to share something with you that I learned from another artist. When you put your plate to bed it should never have a piece of paper on the surface as it draws the oils out of it and dries it out. I guess eventually it will stop performing as well as it should if you keep doing that. Supposed to leave it uncovered in a dust-free area. Happy creating!
Hi, Sherelyn! Thanks so much for the comment. I agree, we are always learning! That’s why I love TH-cam honestly. 💕💕 I’ll keep that in mind about the storage. Gina took the words right out of my mouth- I LOVE watching you gel print!!!🥰 I could watch you print all day long creating these beautiful collage papers! Ironically, I just committed myself to stop being so perfectionist about my prints and started to create organic collage papers overnight- this video was exactly what I needed to see when I sat down for a break.🤩 I would love more gel printing videos from you creating interesting collage papers, and I really liked seeing how you made marks on the gel plate with the brush & other tools- this is awesome INSPIRATION for me!! I always watch gel printing videos before I sit down for a session because I really need that inspiration to help me get out of my head, just play & let my creative juices flow, but it’s a struggle right now because of my overbearing perfectionist, especially when I use my stencils. I’m deliberately using the gel plate to try to break that so I can create awesome grungy & organic prints for collage papers! Thank you so much for this amazing video- I loved that it was a nice long one and I enjoy your narration, and I look forward to your next gel printing video!!😍 ⭐️Maybe you could make a gel print collage paper series using different themes- bright colors, neutrals, metallics, black & white, fluid acrylics, etc.?? I would love that!!💓💓💓

It’s so much fun to just play on the Gelli plate and just let it happen. I was thinking that if you had another Gelli plate you could place nearby, you could “clean” off your roller on that instead of the paper.
This was so fun to watch! I love seeing all the layers of paint coming & going as you move through the printing process! It’s still a mystery to me how it works, though, & I guess for you also at times! It’s great to hear your comments when it’s a surprise to you. Or like when you used the string, I wouldn’t have figured out what I had done (or not done)! I’m glad to see you use various tools, do you use hard brayers most of the time? It cracked me up to hear you say how you were going to work with a limited selection of colors, but threw that out the window pretty quickly! That would be me! Those metallics really jazz things up, don’t they?! I don’t really know enough to ask very intelligent questions, so I’ll just ask for: more, please! Thank you for sharing the process of cleaning up, both at the beginning & at the end! It was great fun, thank you Jennifer! Erica❤

Hei Jennifer lovely use of the gelli plate. I will certainly be following your videos, could you show us wat you do with your individual collages ? I mean bigger individual pieces where you have used these gelli prints - not journals.
I love your technique. The really Grundy piece that you pulled with the Payne’s Grey is fabulous. The Gelli is my favorite medium. I’m going to subscribe…I want more! Hugs ❤️❤️❤️
I stumbled upon your channel by accident and I’m totally excited that I did. I love how you try so many different things and layer on your colors and stencils. I checked out your Etsy shop and was hoping I would find some digital downloads. If you would take pictures of your creations for digital downloads, I would be purchasing them for my junk journaling projects. Just a thought for you and your shop to earn more revenue. I cannot wait to go through your videos to see more of your creations. 😊
Hello & thanks for this generous comment! I have often wondered about offering digital downloads for this reason or even bundles of pieces I don’t use, etc. I will definitely add this to my list for the new year and figure out which works best for me. When you buy art downloads for junk journaling is there an agreement in there that states the art created isn’t for re-sale? Curious how that works & what you’ve noticed. I’ll look at Etsy listings & descriptions as well. 😍 Again, thanks for you comment & I’m happy you found me. I have lots coming after he new year!
Hello Jennifer, it’s funny because I haven’t yet much experience with the gel plate but I begun right away to have a sketch book next to me to roll off the brayer and it’s a wonderful way to keep the great layers of colours!!! 👌🏻🥰🪶
If you have trouble printing on a kids board book try lightly sanding the pages first. Then brush the pages with your choice of gesso. Make sure the page is totally dry before going to the next one. Hope this helps.
Thanks so much! The collages I’m working on right now are actually a series of paper dolls. I don’t have the TH-cam video posted yet. But you can see them on my Instagram page. @jennifertobinart or instagram.com/jennifertobinart/
I love watching you print and you have a great collection here. You do layers brilliantly! I have a suggestion (not a criticism!) Would it be possible to place your gel plate on a plain background? I sometimes find the paint on your gorgeous table confusing when it shows through the gel plate. Thanks for sharing your work.
Hi, Gina!! I am so glad you shared this suggestion!!! Truly, thank you! Right now I have it on the table because it sticks better. Ha! But I will do some experimenting. 💕💕 Glad you enjoyed this!
I can see how you’d like the 8x10, especially since most stencils and things fit that size so much better. This requires more paint too! But I do like working larger at times. 😍
Thank you Jennifer, I love your videos. So glad I found you on TH-cam. Can you tell me the name of the stencil from stencilgirl that is abstract looking that gives the monochromatic look? Thanks so much!
I got that while I was a member of Stencil Club, so I think that was an exclusive 9x12” stencil through that subscription. I found a smaller one with some same elements… www.stencilgirlproducts.com/stencil-shape-shifter-mary-beth-shaw-p/s526.htm You might inquire to see if you can purchase previous sets?? I’m not sure. using white paint to cover the dots you made on top of tlhe orange, would have pulled it all up and the contrast of the white underneath would have looked really good
Hello, welcome to the fun of gel printing! I use a variety of papers… drawing paper, watercolor paper, and thin packing paper. Feel free to use whatever you can get your hands on as you practice… junk mail, envelopes, printer paper, etc. 💕💕
Like your video.like your pics. Carylon Dube queen of Gelli you’ve heard of her? Anyway she says not to put anything in the shell but I kinda agree with you. I sometimes get bumps that are so hard to get out even lines. I hate that. Just curious on your take of paints . Golden Luke liquitex?
Thanks! I know I wrote you back on another message... but I do quickly show my favorite paint brands in my latest video. It just depends what technique I'm doing. But Gold fluid are my absolute favorite. Sometimes I like a thicker paint like Lukas though.
Instead of cleaning excess paint onto your pad, have you considered buying a second slightly smaller gel plate? Put them side by side and you can make 2 prints at once. No wasted paint and double the prints.
I’ve worked on multiple plates at one time before, yes! But I actually really enjoy filling up my sketchbook and experimenting with color combos and texture over there. 😍😍😍 I appreciate this reminder because I’m a fan of no wasted paint! 💕💕
Hi are you familiar with Carolyn Dube? I call her the Gelli Queen. She says not to leave anything on your Gelli plate.but I do find some weird snaps that are hard to remove.. so you could be right. I think your papers turned out really good. How do you like Luke paint? Better than golden or liquitex ?
Hi Lynne! Thank you 💕 Yes, I hear different ways to store my gel plate. Letting them rest between paper has worked for me because I often put them away stacked up in a drawer. I really enjoy Lukas paints and their price. But they are thicker and a little goes a long way on the gel plate. And most are more opaque and layer up in a different way. I defiantly like using them for a good solid base color on my paper. I looove the golden fluid paints and the way they easily mix together on the plate.
I really enjoyed this video. Question, I have heard that you should not use paper to store your Gelli plates because they remove the conditioning oils the plate has. Is this not true? Or do you use special paper?
One thing I've noticed with gel printing discussion groups is conflicting information, that's for sure! So, I've also heard both ways. I had actually looked on Gelli Arts website directly when I was trying to decide how to best care for my gel plates and their advice is what I follow. They have an FAQ section that mentions cleaning and storage and they mention covering both sides with plain white copy paper. I didn't use any type of special paper. Thanks for your comment and glad you enjoyed the video!
@@jennifertobinart thank you so much for taking the time to answer my post and for providing this info. Since I posted this comment, I have seen a couple of other videos that agree with you. I am glad to know that the information you’re providing comes directly from Gelli. Have a wonderful weekend

@@flowerlily1 happy to help! You have a great weekend too! 💕💕
This is very interesting. Have you videoed making picures for me to watch?
Hi Clare, I’m not exactly sure what you’re looking for when you say “making pictures.” But I have several other painting videos on my channel. Enjoy!
It’s hard to see what is on the plate vs what is on your table. Could you place a plastic sheet under your plate in the future
Hello! Yes, I have actually already fixed that in my next videos. Thanks to viewer feedback like this. Thank you for commenting! 💕💕
@@jennifertobinart thanks for responding
@@bconsilio3764 of course! 💕💕
Wash the gell plate before putting it away
Sorry I wrote this twice I didn’t see it hahhh
Haha. No problem!!
You do like to squirt paint!
lol. yes!
are you related to Stephen Tobin?
not that I know of! My in-laws are all in Ireland and that name doesn't sound familiar.
The commentary seems off with the visuals... is that TH-cam messing up or my wifi? Too bad...as it makes it less enjoyable. I just turned the sound off to finish watching. Hope it's a fluke if I wYch more of your videos!
Yikes, sorry you’re having tech trouble. There’s still a lot you can learn with them muted. Happy creating! 💕💕
Definitely a face
