    I store my gel plates on a piece of acrylic and then put them on a wire shelf nothing on top. I have had them for 8 years and it works like a charm. I have 5 plates. And I very seldom clean them because I love lifitng the old grungy layers. Your prints were fantastic and your favs were also mine.

    Hi there, Jennifer! I’m just now getting into gel printing, buying supplies & looking around for random things to use for design. Haven’t tried anything yet! I’m a longtime card maker, & now make journals, so I have a lot of stencils & various acrylics from different projects, lots of inks & stamps, well, in general lots of stuff!! I was worried that you were wasting that gold paint combination by putting it on first, I thought it would disappear! But you got a lot of mileage out of it!! I like watching real time, I want to see every blob of paint, every uh-oh & every woohoo! That helps me to learn by example & also to realize that no one is perfect, we all make mistakes! And that you don’t have to crumple it up & throw it away, artists are very good with creative solutions, but, at least for me, I need to be taught the solutions in real time!! I like listening to you talk, but I don’t think it needs to be non-stop chatter. Thank you for asking! I was just looking on Amazon earlier today & saw this gel plate & thought that it seemed like a good size to have, now I know it is!! Thank you! I “liked” you & added my name to your subscriber list! See you next time!!

    I really enjoyed this gelli printing video!! Beautiful layering- Definitely subscribed! I like a mixture of speeds & I love artist commentary to learn tips & techniques. I could watch gel printing all day every day☺️ and I would love to see more of your experiments on that big plate- mine is 9x12 but I’ll end up going bigger once I can afford it!! I’ve gotten through the beginners learning curve with gel printing, but I’m always searching for inspiration before I sit down for a session. Would love advice on color choices, layering, grungy look, making gel prints for abstract/ intuitive collage, ⭐️how to choose from all of the colors & media I have!!- I get caught up in perfectionism paralysis which can really kill a gel printing session! I’m trying to PLAY more and let loose rather than aiming to make perfect prints. Thank you so much!💖

I will try to touch on some of those points you discussed in my future videos. 💕 I’ve definitely dealt with being paralyzed in my art practice before and the only thing that ever helps me is just showing up! Allow yourself to play and experiment. Make a mess. Use the paints!! You will learn so much through your own exploration. 🥰 As for color, sometimes it helps me to start the session with a limited palette. I’ll talk more on that in my next gel plate video that I just recorded yesterday. Stay tuned!

    I really love your prints, and how you ‘rescue’ the less successful ones. Obviously, by now you have a stash of truly gorgeous prints, but - what do you do with them? I don’t see any collages on your channel and I’d love to see where these end up.

      Hello! I’m so glad you enjoy my prints. I feel like some of them can stand alone as finished pieces of art work, so I’m hesitant to rip them up for collage. Then other will be used in collage. My most recent project should post soon and you can see me use some of these papers in that video. Stay tuned!

      Eeeeeek, what a wonderful Christmas gift!!! Is that your first gel plate? I had only had 6x6 until now and the 12x14” is SO MUCH FUN!! Not sure about wax paper. Most importantly, it needs to stay flat and avoid anything on it that will cause air bubbles. I might start setting mine in flat plastic bins with a lid. Then it will be faster set up and clean up. Happy creating! 💕💕

    Lovely vid! One of the issues with printing on the kiddie books... They're normally varnish-coated. So the paint probably can't stick properly.
    Might be worthwhile rubbing a page down with acetone, and see if that removes the varnish.
    Failing that, maybe try scuffing the surface lightly with a scotch scouring pad before printing. It might create a surface the paint can stick to.
    Something else to try is to use a brush or brayer to lay down a layer of matt medium on the page. That'll preserve the picture, and will offer a surface for the paint to stick to. That's only if the matt medium sticks to the page though.
    I hope one of these ideas works.

    When you say that the plastic sheets cause bubbles, how does that happen?

    • @jennifertobinart
      @jennifertobinart  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed this. 💕💕 It’s because air is getting trapped in there. It’s like we can’t every get the plastic perfectly flat on there again. So air will sneak under there and over time the outline of the air bubble will leave marks on the gel plate. Then those lines show in your prints!

    Ummmm just my 3¢...... BUT.... Like many others have said I enjoyed the mixture you had in this video ( how you edited it).
    Also wanted to mention something about the board books or options. Because they usually have a shinny coating on them the paint doesn't usually transfer or stay adhered well if at all .
    So I usually sand them first both heavy and lightly depending on what you prefer. To give the gesso a better surface to grip too. Then I gesso the pages more or less to your liking. But that just then gives the paint a great surface to stick to as well when you get to that point .
    And lastly there is the option to use a clear gesso if you want the images in the book to look like they do originally before you put any paint or prints on them.
    I think you get results your more happy with because if the tooth the gesso will give to the pages for the paint to adhere too.
    I could share my normal process and steps I use for kids board books if you happen to see this and are interested in knowing that .
    Thanks for making the video and showing your process and sharing it with all of us !!

      Loooove the idea of clear gesso. I’ll use that bc I usually like when a bit of the old image shows through. Thanks for sharing that with me and feel free to share anything else. I enjoy discussing the process!

    Good video. I do have a question. Doesn’t the paper storage bpull the oils out of the gel plate? That is what I understand from other artists videos.

    • @jennifertobinart
      @jennifertobinart  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! I see a lot of different options for clean up & storage. So, I’m always trying different things. I can definitely see oil pulled up on the papers when I remove it. But, I honestly don’t worry about it & I personally always add a layer of baby oil during the cleaning process and then add the paper. So I feel like I’m also adding oil to hopefully help in the process. For the plates that I use often, I leave them out of their shells all together. But when I need to store them for awhile, I do the baby oil and cleaning, line with paper, and store in the shell. Hope that helps!

    • @jennifertobinart
      @jennifertobinart  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm just impatient sometimes when it comes to dry time! ;). If I don't want two paints to mix together while wet, then I need the first color to dry and then the second color can layer on top of it. So I'll just quickly zap it with the heat to help speed that up!

    Can I ask you a quick question? In regards to stencils…I’ve bought some from various people/companies online. If I was to use a purchased stencil on a piece of work that I eventually end up selling…do I have to mention somewhere on the project (back of the frame or mat) who the stencil was created by? You know…a copyright situation… I know that if you use someone’s published picture (like making collage out of napkins which the design/images are copyrighted) I think the rule is you have to alter it by at least 60% before you can take credit and not be in trouble by the original artist.

      This is why I love using @stencilgirl stencils. If you read on their website under FAQ it explains their Angel Policy. Each company will have different rules, so it’s important to look into. GREAT question! 💕
