I had a 53 mercury flat head in a 41 ford business coupe!! I had an Offenhauser tri-power intake manifold with three Stromberg 97's progressively linked.
This was a real pain to keep adjusted properly with three carburetors. I opted to go back to a single carb polished and ported intake manifold and purchased an aluminum adapter for a small Rochester 4 barrel Carburetor (56 Chevy 265 cid.) with manual progressive linkage that used 2 barrels up until throttle was more than half open (adjustable). Worked very well!! Low idle was 2 barrel almost the same as the Ford carb, but after that came on very powerful. This was a great set-up for me. Simple Idle adj. and mixture adjustment . Wide open fuel mixture was almost perfect for max performance without too rich of a mixture for top end performance!! Good luck on your build. You are probably over powering this motor for the stock crankshaft and bearings. Also overheating is a problem for the flathead. You need really good (high flow) water pumps and the best large copper radiator you can find. Possibly an electric fan in front. The cooling is very in-efficient in these motors.
Also use the best head gaskets money can buy with these higher compression heads. Most of the old timers took out the motor and gave it a complete overhaul with all of the parts replaced and matched with the horsepower rating desired!!!

Yay, Flathead V8 :) I had just commented about that, coupla days back?
Privileged Society, Hoovie - Never toughed it out?
I do remember, the bolts on the flathead & when I got it off, the original, copper, head gasket, looked brand, spanking, shiny new.
Reason for overhaul was, compression loss & oil consumption. Back in 1937 - That 85 HP engine, ran on monograde oil -
No filter - Only, oil pick-up screen... Skull, distributor, keyed to the front of the nylon, helical, camshaft drive gear...
Offenhauser & Edelbrock came to be known, decades later... There was a water pump on each bank - Integral with the engine mounts... Mechanical, cable brakes... Vacuum wiper... Vapour lock, fuel pump - Fixed by wet rag, atop?
Safety of steel - From Pedal to Wheel? Any Colour - So long as it's Black?... Rust & Bullet Proof Vanadium steel, body...
Transverse, leaf springs/ Friction, shock absorbers… Good Ol' Henry :)

Might be a silly question, but I wonder why you can’t see a tiny mist of atomized fuel being sprayed into open cylinders. Another thing I realized is with no valves, no need to lubricate anything on the top end, so no oil spray. I’m glad I got to see it. Thank you:)

Bentley suggestion! I had a 1990 500SL with the Bosch fuel injection system, it had a stumbling and a misfire. I brought it to a mechanic I trust and he did a pressure check, because it is mechanical fuel injection system it is heavily dependent on pressure, so slight fluctuations can mess it up. He replaced the fuel pumps and the problem went away. That was after I put a new fuel distributor, injectors, idle air control valve, intake manifold gasket. It turned out to be so simple as a fuel pump.

My 2010 Rapide had exactly the same problem this month! I live in the UK and Chiltern Aston (the independent I use) diagnosed the fault as a faulty bonnet latch. Also, it’s important to fix because the windscreen wipers don’t work if the car thinks the bonnet is open. I discovered this when it was raining and driving on the motorway-scary! Just some other facts: the black textured paint on the wing mirrors will start to peel off - there are no wing mirrors left for the Rapide. Also, do you have a rocker switch under the headlamp light switch cluster? No one seems to know what it does... not even Aston! It’s great you have brought awareness of this car to your audience’s attention. It’s such a great GT and sports car and is much more exciting than anything from Bentley or Mercedes. Please let us know how you fixed the fault.

And my dad, not wanting to spend $ on extras, would use a roll of toilet paper, without the tube in it as the oil filter, in the cannister by the fire wall. it must have worked, he drove it that way for years. Thanks for the memory.

The only vehicle my Grandad ever purchased new was a black, '51 Ford sedan with the flathead V-8. When I was still a pre-teen (a LONG time ago) the area Ford-Massey Ferguson tractor dealer use to send out his head mechanic, prior to planting season, to tune up and/or repair any of his customers tractors. What was also common, in our rural area at the time at least, was for that SAME mechanic to tune up and/or repair the many Ford cars and trucks farmers owned and operated along with those tractors. Since I was just a kid I found it interesting but not at all unusual to see a flathead run without it's "heads"....I just figured that was the way things were supposed to work.

Watching you take that head off took me back to when I was 14 or 15 doing the same thing on my father's '48 Mercury (rebadged Ford) pickup which had the same engine. It was the first chance I got to work on a car engine, although I had dreamed about it for years. When I got the head off. like you, I was so proud I had to show it to someone. I carried it into the house much to my mother's horror. My father had a very similar woody, a '50 or '51.

My mom used to run the the American Racing electro-plating facility in LA when they were chrome plating wheels for the Prowler. I got to see it, it was pretty cool. But those rear wheels are SO BIG they lost about 40% of them to plating defects in the process (the Enron-era rolling brown-outs didn't help), that's why they eventually stopped plating them and went to paint.
