  • This is a video of my 1961 Ford Galaxie Starliner. I explain the restoration process and modifications that we're made by Mike and Pat of Stampede Inc of Hollywood, FL.
The engine is a 428 cubic inch FE (Ford Edsel) block. It's also outfitted with Edelbrock aluminium heads, a Comp solid roller cam, and a dual quad tunnel wedge intake manifold. Powerful? Yes.

This is a masterpiece. I have my High School dream car as well which is 70 Cougar XR7 convertible and I wanted the 428 but It does have a 351C. This allows me to drive it without stopping at every gas pump and it's an automatic. If I get a 70 Cyclone, I'll find a 428.

What a splendid, magnificent beast of a car! The styling in those years was at the peak. Bold, confident optimistic, looking like it's ready to take on anything. Very much like the attitude most people had in those days. That car represents something that is hard to put into words, but for those who understand, no explanation is necessary, and for those who don't, none is possible. Take care of this fine beast. She's a treasure, and enjoy her like she's meant to be enjoyed.
      CHEERS!

This is almost identical to the car that I bought from the movie set off the valachi papers, unfortunately when I went into the Marine Corps I didn't have time for the restoration I ended up scrapping it 🤐😰😰😰😢

Gotta comment again. You nail it with the added features. And black with red interior was what we had. It’s my favorite too. But now that I think of it, ours was a Galaxy 500 with 3 on the tree. But just seeing your car brought back a flood of awesome memories. Mom and Dad are gone now so anything that brings back great memories is much appreciated! Thank you so much!!!

Beautiful! I want to cry. My Dad hades one of these and it was supposed to be my car when I turned 16. Then this one time, at band camp...I came home and mom had sold it. Dad was a truck driver and on the road so he wasn’t there when she sold it. He was upset too. But mom reminded him of just how fast that car was. She asked him if he really wanted his son to have a car like that at 16??? She probably saved my life. But I miss that car! Beautiful!

Love your car and all classic car guys who work hard to keep the old cars detailed perfectly. I still have my original Pontiac GTO that I bought new May 16, 1967. It's still a number matching car. The 400 360 HP HO engine is now a 461 cubic inch with forged components and a Ram Air IV cam.

Just saw this in 2020, what a BEAUTY. I remember going down to the newly built Arnold Bros Ford dealer ship a couple blocks from my house in Boulder Colorado as a 14 year old to see the new 1961 Fords and get the free donuts they were giving out. They had a 1961 sign that rotated because of that special date and the little plastic models that twisted in shape after a few years, but the thing I remember the most were the donuts. You have yourself a rare and beautiful car there, thanks for posting.

428, dual quads, roller cam, 4 on the floor, perfect stance, clean enough to eat off from. On top of highly underrated body styling, (kick ass) 10 out of 10 for me!

Love what you have to the car, I used to have a 64 XL so I recognized the interior right away, and the intake manifold I still have from my drag racing days, hard to beat it. You did a very nice job on the car and it has to be a blast to drive.

I really like your restoration. I did a similar restore to a 1965 Galaxie 500XL which like you I use a 428CJ but mine was done back in the mid 70's before aftermarket places had the good 180 degree intakes especially the dual quad. Also had to use Ford cast CJ heads. If you remember back in the late 60's and through most of the 70's Ford offered their Ford Muscle parts which could be bought from your local Ford dealership. That was about the only exotic parts you could find for the FE and Boss motors at that time. You have done a much nicer job than I did. You should be very proud of it.

I would agree! My faves, if I had to choose, would be the '61 & '62 Galaxie. These were very attractive cars, I like several of the Ford cars of that era. I learned to drive on my Dad's '58 Fairlane w/332 Interceptor and 3 on the tree. If you could heft that non-power steering and that heavy Ford into a parallel parking space without killing 'er, you EARNED your license right there! When Pop traded for his '65 Galaxie w/ PS, I thot I was in heaven! 'Twas a world of difference in the '58 and '65! :)

.. ... a '61 Starliner 4 speed will always be the one he still lasts after. God bless !!!

This man did a truly awesome resto; especially the XL interior, elec. windows, power steering and the built 428; especially the solid lifter roller cam which on those FE's makes pure music while idling. Had a 61 2 dr. fair lane (full size Ford) in 65, built by Roswell N.M. (alien crash site 1947) Ford, for drag racing. Never knew which block was used due buying it in El Paso from the Mercury dealer.. It had the tri power and mechanical advance dual points distributor, 427 long tube factory headers, 427 medium riser heads, 4:88's. Since it ran in a stock class the 3 on the tree was not changed. Best shift point was 7500 rpms using 7' slicks. Once I missed 3dr twice AND THE BEAST REVVED TO 8,500 AND BENT 2 EXHAUST VALVES. Car had to be shifted very slow, yet it was tacking 6500 at the 1/4 mile finish line! Ran in very low 12's. what a car.
Now Where in the hell he got those super rare 427 factory bad ass headers is what I'd love to know, due restoring my 65 fast back!!.

Beautiful car. You didn't have the opportunity to check off the order form and order it new, so if it wasn't equipped they way you wanted it when you bought it, there is nothing wrong with restoring it to suit yourself. Enjoy it, personalizing a car to suit your wants and desires is what hot rodding is all about.

3 speed transmission on the steering column / and bench seat. The rest is history. Loved Fords ever since. Ford won LeMans just after and Jim Clark won many races with a Ford powered Lotus. And many of the Indy Five hundred winners and finishers ran ran alcohol Fords with direct port fuel injection. I know it's not rational but I love Fords to this day. Dad had great taste.

You have a dream machine! I had a 64 Galaxie 500 XL I recognise the seats. Mine had the 300 hp 390 with cruise o matic on the console. A friend had a model with the factory 4 speed. I like the starliner roof design. It was replaced by the fastback roof which was more square looking to me in 63 up. 61s had 390 and I think there was a 3 2bbl option. In 62 the 406 came and in 63 the 427. 428 came in 66 as the 7 liter. In the 60s in high school I worked summer in parts at Ford dealer.

You really upgraded that old girl. Love the red interior. I had a few cars long ago with red interior but now days the companies only want to build black and gray. How bland.
With the hot cam and headers, that engine should put out 390+ horsies. I hope you installed a positraction rear axle.
Thanks for saving that sweet ride. Decades from now there just won't be enough of them for the youngsters to admire. I fear the new ones will all be electric tubs with no style.

Really neat car. I like the 1964 XL interior. I bought a 1961 Starliner in 1965. It had a 292 with a three speed on the column. Traded it for a new Fairlane in 1966. Always missed the Starliner.

What a beautiful car. The wheels, tires and the stance are perfect. Not a fan of a red interior but it works with the black paint.

Love the car. I’m a Chevy man 100% but I have to tell ya the style and you’re added touch is awesome. Job well done no corners cut.
Since you went off the beaten path ( not keepin stock) take the dual quads off install a 750 Holley on that big block she will run way better. Faster quick and some fuel mileage should you care bout that. Jus sayin

Red and black. 61 with 64 parts. Drum and Disk. The kind of hybrid I like.

From a '61 Chevy Bel Air owner,...Wayne, you have a gorgeous car! I love the sloped roof, hard top design. My Bel Air is a 2 door sedan. Wish it was hard top, but we roll with the iron we have.

I remember back in the early sixties the breadman used to come door to door to sell bread and cookies and he was driving a starliner wagon.

My uncle had a 1960 Starliner black/red interior with the 390 he bought in 1960.

If he bought it in 60, biggest engine was a 352.

A guy came to our town when I was a teen. He had one of these cars with a 365Hp 352 Police Interceptor and 4 speed. He came to race a local guy that had a 61 Impala with 409 Chevy and four speed. The guy with the Chevy said he could beat 352's all day long. We went down to the local race strip and watched the 409 get beat twice by 4 or 5 cars. Hid bragging days were over.

Very classy build , love what you’ve done , nice set of wheels , goes great with the car. Nice motor upgrade and it’s a stick as well. Glad you showed it to us. I also run roller rockers and with aluminum valve covers they’re noisy but they do the trick. I give this a solid 10.

Really sharp ! I love everything you did to it. The car has the perfect stance and is beautiful, the aluminum heads and intake must save a lot of weight and good front brakes are a must. Don't see the Starliners often.

That slope roof is absolutely beautiful!!! My favorite Ford...heck my favorite classic car period!!! I’d love to find a 61 star liner but afraid of the price!! I was hoping these old galaxies could be bought cheaper since they aren’t as sought after and popular. I’m afraid to look and see what they cost because it may destroy my hope lol. I was hoping I could find a decent driver for 20k and under. I’ve found some decent 64s for around that price but I really want a 61 62 with that slopes roof

Gorgeous car. The black paint is awesome. Engine is awesome. Engine bay is awesome. I think what you need to do next is go back to the wrecking yard and get that Marauder and restore it as your next project. These Starliners and the Marauders, especially the 64 Marauders, are awesome. I have heard a rumour from a guy who owns a classic car wrecking yard here in Utah that beginning in 2020 or so, you won't be able to drive the classic cars on the road. Junk yards like his will have to close, too.
