    I love how Katie says "you're doing great!" etc in these videos - she can't see what we're doing, but she's such a freaking beacon of positivity that she just *assumes* that everyone is marvellous. More of that in the world please!

      I laughed about this as I watched from my recliner with my glass of wine. I will try and live up to Katie's expectations tomorrow though when I go through some of these exercises at my barre. I especially love the attitude/passe exercise without moving the back. I think this will really be beneficial for me!

      @@kathryn_morgan Further bootcamps ideas:
      1) extensions = developpé front & side as suggested by Giulia.
      2) stronger/higher jumps to improve all kinds of allegro
      3) Strong core for épaulement, aplomb and general posture
      4) Balance and turns
      5) ankle and calf strength = articulated foot work and strong pointe work

    Believe it or not, i think swimmers have an advantage to arabesque. For me, arabesque is one of the things i can always do properly, since day 1. It has to do with me doing back arches and swimming all my life. Also as a belly dancer, doing back arches came naturally so that helps with arabesque. It's the develope a face that drives me nuts, when i elongate my legs the height drops...

    • @abee948
      @abee948 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, my extensions all around are ok, considering my flexibility and strength, but arabesque was always a little easier because you get a lot of that strength in swimming!

    I needed this ! Thank you - I will do this video religiously!
    I had a question: We are starting to do beats in my ballet classes and I can barely do a Royale. Would it be possible in the future if you made a video for it? Jumps are a struggle for me regardless but with beats- its like I overthink them or just my legs only want to do changements.

    • @katherinedobias7499
      @katherinedobias7499 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just learned this a few weeks ago and i was overthinking it too. The work is not in the feet but in the thighs. For the royale you're not switching feet but rather squeezing your thighs together like you're holding a paper between them, and when the thigh muscles are squeezed really hard on that jump, it causes your feet to move on their own as a reflex. It's like when the doctor taps your knee and your leg reflexes go up. Somehow the muscle in your thigh causes your feet to move like that. I hope I'm explaining it well. I also try to feel my feet overcross while i squeeze my thighs together during the jump

    • @autisticdancer
      @autisticdancer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been doing beating jumps for a while now and I feel embarrassed saying I still have no idea how you are supposed to do jumps where you have to do like 6 beats in the air. I understand the basic ones where you are only doing 2 to 3 beats in the air. But I have no idea how you are supposed to do more than three beats in the air and at this point I'm too afraid to ask because I feel like at this point I *should* already know how to do that.

    On exercise at 4:53, lifting the legs, it's much more effective if the knees are locked out fully straight. Makes it much harder, in fact you may not even leave the ground at all, but it's the effort that counts.

When I'm doing the exercises on the floor, trying to keep my heels together is nearly impossible. My legs naturally spread wide apart when I do floor work on my stomach. Is it better that I work keeping my legs together as much as I can even though my heels can't touch or, should I put a slight bend in my knees so my heels can touch?

    • @larissaswayze
      @larissaswayze ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I don’t know if I can help but reading your comment I just want to say how frustrating that sounds! Have you ever talked to a doctor or physiotherapist or other body expert about this? There could be something going on with how your brain communicates with your body. If it’s not something neurological it may just be that you need to think about direction in a different way. If thinking left or right doesn’t work try thinking how you’re moving in space. For example, in a studio think “I’m going to move toward the mirror” or toward the barre or the door, etc. Anything that can act as a landmark for you focus on that instead. Another idea is perhaps tying something on your wrist or ankle that can remind you which way to go. It might just be that your brain thinks of direction in a different way. And that’s totally okay! But I also would consider speaking to a professional if it seems like a problem you can’t solve on your own. Good luck!

    • @lilacfairy121
      @lilacfairy121 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear Julianne, I am a dance and yoga instructor, I am over 40 years old and professionally trained in ballet and contemporary and a certified dance instructor and yoga therapist and in all my years of experience and studying physiology and body movement I have never heard of something like "movement dyslexia". I can understand what you mean and I understand that you feel weird and uncomfortable. If you don't have problems with movement in your daily life (going to work, to the grocery store, doing your hair, etc.) then in my opinion there is no problem with your brain or your body. Beginners often have a hard time learning ballet or dancing in general and I have seen lots of beginners giving up because they were not able to coordinate the movement or the steps given by the teacher. I myself have made the experience that when I train ballet and I am overthinking the steps that it makes it much harder or my body sometimes even blocks completely (and then I also choose the wrong foot or direction). On another hand there is something called body memory and it works with different parts of our brain and nervous system. When we dance, we use this part of the brain more, and when activated through practicing consistently, the body can then itself remember the movement and complete it almost on its own. I think that you are a completely normal person and I encourage you to take your time and explore movement slowly and I invite you to feel every movement in your body instead of thinking about it. Try to go slow and try to feel into how a certain step feels in your whole body. Dancing is not for completing steps, dancing is for feeling our bodies. With more and more practice in feeling the movement, your body will be able to remember the feeling of a certain step. Be aware that everyone is different and everyone has an individual way of learning and moving. Sending you much love!

      Dear Lilac, Thank you for sharing your expertise and for your very thoughtful response. You sound like a wonderful instructor. You echo many of my instructor’s tips about muscle memory. I keep practicing and waiting for muscle memory to kick in. In my fourth year of training, I’m feeling better than I did at first. Now that I’ve identified the problem and have your inspiration, I feel better. It’s called visual spatial dyslexia, a learning disability. I have 8 of the 12 characteristics.

      Larissa, Dear Lilac, Thank you for sharing your expertise and for your very thoughtful response.

    How would these exercises work for a 9 year old? My girl really wants to find these to do at home between classes to help build her flexibility and strength

      I think these are great for her! It's just harder with little ones to understand the muscle connection. But she can absolutely start working on these!
