Check out my article on Sega super Scaler Games @ www.vintageisth...
Developed and published by Sega in 1988
Powered by Sega's Y board arcade hardware, Power Drift really is a graphical tour de force; it's amazing to think this came out in 1988!
TH-cam's aggressive encoding hasn't done much for the video quality - it should improve if it decides the video is popular enough and starts serving up a VP9 version.

It used the Sega Y board which has three 68000's and was designed to do sprite based pseudo 3D games and basically nothing else. Sega's 16-bit 3D arcade boards are kind of weird with all sorts of specialty layers for 3D graphics effects but basically incapable of doing tile based scrolling games.

Although many people always compare this game with Mario kart, actually both games are very different.
This game not even look like kart racing. Besides that there's no formula such as mascots, weapons, items, etc used on Mario Kart that cloned by so many devs later (Chocobo Racing, CTR, you name it).
Not sure why so many people thinks that this game is the root of Mario Kart. It's just generic racing like Outrun / Hang On but using terms Kart Racing

It's not MAME, I have MAME in its entirety and that version isn't as smooth as what that old emulator was, which is also very similar to the version above, in fact the only difference I can see with the version above and the one I had was the gears were an actual up/down gearstick graphic and in the bottom right corner, not just a "L" or "H" ... If I can just find out what damn emulator was called, I'll be able to find the rest :( ... any ideas? (and it wasn't the Sega AM2 emulator, nor MAME as described above).

It only turns into a bike and jet if you score 1st place in all first 4 courses. A little easter egg from the legendary Yu Suzuki - designer of After Burner and Super hangon.

It was in fact very popular. I used to see it in arcades, cafe's and pool halls all the time in Sweden and Denmark. The computer ports were well-hyped by magazines back in the days too. The C64 was pretty good, but a completely different game as the tracks couldn't tilt or rotate. Still it looked good and played well, most other ports were too slow to be playable.

It was pretty popular and was ported on most computers by the end of 1989. A PC Engine version was also released in 1990.

@@alkohallick2901 It plays pretty differently to Outrun. If you were a regular at the arcades circa 1990, I'd find it surprising if you never saw this game.

@@rcole718 I owned this game on the Atari ST. Granted the Genesis had more processing power and better graphics, many corners would be cut. The ST version lacked music, character animations and smooth scrolling. If Outrunners for Genesis is any indication, the Genesis version would pale compared to the arcade.
