How To Paint an Abstract Series / Art with Adele

  • HOW TO PAINT AN ABSTRACT SERIES / Want to know why most of the time -- unless I'm working on a very large painting -- I work on multiple paintings at once? Working on multiple abstract paintings at the same time can give you flexibility and will result in a set of paintings that are visually related to each other even as each can stand on its own. What's more, after selecting your palette and mixing your colors you can create multiple paintings with less effort. In this abstract painting tutorial, I demonstrate just how I paint two abstract landscapes using the same palette. You’ll see how they start off with the same color palette but change course in the middle of the painting and develop into two separate and unique pieces. They relate to each other of course, but totally stand on their own individually.

You do some amazing things in your little shaky studio. I put the TV and the chairs in a bedroom and took over the living room for a studio. But things expand to fill the space available so I still don’t have much working space. Im a sucker for art supplies. You have certainly inspired me to get up and try something new. I should have been taking notes. I guess my weekend will be spent in Adele’s Studio.

I'd like to share some of my own tips with you: 1. When I blot paint off a painting instead of a paper towel which gets thrown away I use some kind of paper that can later become a piece of collage: deli paper, copy paper, graph paper, etc. I use it over and over so the different colors of paint get layered and built up on it. 2. I put a little bit of Dawn dish soap into the water container where I put my used brushes when I have finished with them so it is easier to clean them all at the end. 3. I rub hand cream on my hands before starting so the paint will come off easier. 4. After using a stencil I slip it into a baking pan with soapy water until I am finished and read to clean up. 5. I splurged on a very tall trash can so I don't have to bend over at all when tossing things into it. 6. Instead of restaurant trays that are all the same for collage pieces I use plastic or styrofoam plates with sections in them and stack them in alternating order so there is space between the layers.

I find your compositions interesting and liberating. Every time you hold a piece of paper up wondering out loud where to place it i think 'sweet spot (rule of thirds)' but you tend to place around the edges - never thought of it, yet it works!

I usually make two at a time, so I’ll have at least one that I’ll enjoy most. You’re doing an even more effective way, because you’re keeping them more related. This video is also helpful for me because I rarely use collage. I may head in this direction.... 😊
Thanks for this and all of your videos!

I've been struggling with a series I've been working on and your tips on creating an abstract have really helped and served as reminders of stuff I already knew. 1- I reduced my palette to 3 colors + b&w. 2- used your subtle warm & cool variations of white...amazing! 3- thanks for reminding me that it's ok if paintings in a series end up being different from each other as long as they relate through color and technique.
    Thanks so much!

That sounds maybe odd but its fun to try and describe ones response to art with words. Thank you for explaining your process So well. A joy to watch. Adele, thank you so, so much for these wonderful videos - i am so grateful that you take the time and effort to make these videos, they are an absolute treasure chest of information and education for me. I discovered that i love painting, and specifically abstract painting, only a couple of years ago and i am entirely self taught. While it is very satisfying to grapple with the process of creating a painting that works, it can be rather hit and miss, and not having a teacher, it is always me giving feedback to me - kind of like the blind leading the blind sometimes! Your videos are exactly what i have been searching for - a way to get into the mind of an artist as she explains her process, why she does what she does. It is absolutely invaluable. Amazing. I learn so much from each video - every single step in this one for example taught me something i didnt know. You are very generous to share your skill and experience with us, I’m sure it must be quite time consuming to produce these videos, please know that your efforts are very much appreciated and of great value to this novice painter here in Sydney, Australia. Blessings to you.

One of the things I am learning from you is to use LESS paint than I think I need. It turns out the lots of paint can lead to muddy colours, too thick a texture, and surprisingly, minimizes its impact. Less IS more.

Oh my Gawd, I'm going to make some little mixed media thingies, sort of in the spirit of this (using my wild colors that sometimes slip-slide towards the edge of tacky). I have never wanted to add text or dried paint to a canvas before today, but now I'm going to make a bunch o' little canvases a la Adele. I need something for my toilettes, and I need to come up with a print that's NOT a picture of an outhouse before Ray sees one of those as he shops for groceries. Nothing against Walmart outhouse wall art if you're a guy and you want people to know you're a bachelor, but it's just not moi. I'm going to make different kinds of collage thingies and see what happens. If I do several different series, I can change them every few months to follow the seasons or my mood swings. I've never done a series like this, but i only have to please myself.... see The Artists' Curse to understand how hard it is to enjoy your own art.

Really enjoyed your process and the outcome. The use of black really intrigued me. I was "taught" never to use black as it would often 'kill' a painting but rather a combination of complementaries that were common to the painting, eg a red-orange and blue-green until you got the darkest dark from them. However I will be giving black a go since youve taught me it depends on how you use it. Also are all your collage papers your own from discarded paintings etc. Ive got some really great brown paper I was thinking of going to town on so I can rip it all up and use in a painting or two. Thanks again for your generous sharing :)

The side-by-side technique is effective to produce works that are individual but clearly related. The dark grey walls are interesting too; most studios seem to have white walls. True grey allows good color perception too. Also, seeing the true colors indoors requires good, balanced light. What kind of lighting are you using?

Your making the process relatable - thank you! I'd love to see what you did to get the canvas started as you did here. It looks like a nice painting in itself.

I’ve really enjoyed your videos and have learned so much - thank you! I’d like to attempt a really large canvas painting but I’m not sure what paints to buy that would be of good quality but also the most cost effective. (You’ve mentioned that you buy gallons of white paint - what brand, etc.?) Thank you again for your great instruction!

You can get started with any kind of paint, but I like to use Golden brand just because I am used to working with them. It really doesn't matter what brand or type you use, you will find the best kind for you as you work with the paints. You'll do great!!

Really like watching you work- I like these ,probably b/c it's hard for me to be totally abstract. I need an image prompt in my mind. Do you have an image or just very vague-landscape?

    • @AdeleSypesteynStudio
      @AdeleSypesteynStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Before I create an abstract landscape, I look through photos or images where I like the composition and/ or the colors. So it gives me an idea of where to start. But once I get going something else takes over and it has a life of its own. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

I love the use of qtips for loose marks and the drips. Does the addition of water compromise the paint in anyway. I've seen where people advise to use mediums for thinning paint. What's your thoughts on this please. Thanks for generously showing your process. I appreciate it. I'm self taught and your intuitive mindful process appeals to me as that's how I like to work too.

I love your videos so much, Adele! You are my inspiration! I am starting to work with collage and wonder in this video what type of paper you use for your collage pieces? Do you create them yourself or do you find them?

    • @AdeleSypesteynStudio

For my collage papers, I create some myself and I collect others from different p,aces. Just don’t use magazine pages because they fade over time. Thanks for commenting. 🌸

Just found you a few weeks back ...loving your visual language and art style. Learning a lot from you. Thank you for sharing your artist knowledge with so many.
My question is; if we make a piece of art and we use magazine, newspaper, book pages or some other form of mass produced media in our art piece, and sell our art piece, that would not be a crime, correct?

I am so happy you are sharing the videos with your art group. The more people I can reach the better which means there will be more art in the world. Even though I have had that book for many years I still use it and reference it all the time. I know you will enjoy it. 🌸
