  • CREATING ABSTRACT COLLAGES / The artist Henri Matisse has always been one of my favorites and his cut papers -- in which he “painted with scissors” -- has always inspired me. In this abstract art tutorial I show you 7 different possibilities for paintings using only a handful of large painted papers. While laying down and moving around the papers on a large 30x48” canvas, I also explain my thought process in the design of each of the pieces. Being aware of why you are making a design choice is important and can help you to easily problem solve along the way.

    I'd never considered using such large collage pcs 🤯. I'd love to see how you manage to glue them on and what the final pc will look like 🤔👀. Incredible to me that such random and simple collage doodling can work together to make such compelling overall pieces 👍😊

    I stumbled over your website while I was surfing Pinterest for paintings I like and I am so glad I did. I’ve been stuck for a while in a rut and you inspired me to get going again! Thanks so much for your generous sharing of information and videos. You are reminding me of a lot of things that I had heard before or done in the past and forgotten. I love your work!

    I love this!! Thank you Adele for sharing so much of your process with us. I got an art degree years ago then had to go into the work force after a divorce. I forgot how much fun making art is! I am now retired and doing art again and found your videos remind me of how fun and satisfying the creative process can be . Your experiments open up so many possibilities.

    I, too, enjoy seeing and hearing you process. You’ve inspired me to paint small papers and combine them to create 9x12 or 12x12 pieces. I consider them studies and am working up to doubling them in size, maybe larger. Now, of course I want to paint and try larger collages, so, I’m looking forward to seeing you work the large collage into a finished piece.

      It is great to have a collection of studies because you have something to draw from when you want to start a new painting. You will see me finish a large collage, it is on my list of videos. 🌸

    Love this! Started painting several collage papers last night and ordered some deli paper. Adele, I’d also love to see how you complete this. I have the perfect space for a giant canvas but how to finish/adhere/frame everything is what is most daunting to me. Thank you for the great videos!! Love them.

    Great video Adele! Would you consider doing a video where you are actually gluing all these papers down? I love to do collage but always have a problem with my papers wrinkling , especially newsprint, the thinner magazine pages and parchment. Thanks.

    Adele, Thank you so much for the gift of your beautiful art and wisdom about all the great techniques and your process. I cannot tell you how much joy it has brought me to be able to watch amd learn from you. I look forward to signing up to get more lessons from you.
    I have a question about collage pieces:
    What type of adhesive do you use? I used a clear one on magazine clippings and it sort of rippled the pieces. Maybe magazine isn’t good for collage... not sure.

  • @jordannewport638
    @jordannewport638 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Please follow these up to completion and show the applying of adhesive process as well as the completed collages. We need to see completions - ideas are only the beginning and although they are inspirational they don't help people with how to carry on and apply these ideas and inspirations.

    @adelesypesteyn What is the next step once we found the final most pleasing composition?
    Do we lay matte medium on the canvas and
    then place the piece on top and
    smooth it out and then again on top of the piece and smooth it out with a scraper to make it lay flat,allow it to dry and varnish?
    Or do we place matte medium on a brush and individually adhere the pieces in place then place medium on top,dry and varnish?

    • @AdeleSypesteynStudio
      @AdeleSypesteynStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can really do it either way. I start from the back forward. So whatever is on the bottom I adhere with acrylic medium or gel. Then I work my way toward the top piece of paper collage and put a coat of the medium on top of everything. 🌸

    Magnificent! Inspires me to start doing pieces to have collage paper ready! I would be interested in seeing the glueing part which intimidates me a bit. Do you brush the glue on the paper or the canvas or on both! Thanks for the video! I could have kept on watching for another hour😊

    • @AdeleSypesteynStudio
      @AdeleSypesteynStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, having collage paper ready makes things simple and quick. I brush the glue on both the paper and the canvas.

  • @marlainablanche6233
    @marlainablanche6233 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Love doing collage but have difficulty with the glueing. Bubbles happen and can ruin the piece. Do you have a preferred method? I use mod podge or watered down white glue. Any suggestions?

    • @deeh9563
      @deeh9563 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marlaina Blanche I’m looking for suggestions in this area too. I use gel medium or the thinner matte medium. Can never remember which for what purpose - I think the thinner matte for thicker paper/card stock and the heavier gel medium for thinner paper. I think, lol.

    • @bethdelmonte-catanese6925
      @bethdelmonte-catanese6925 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mariana Blanche try golden matte gel or matte medium for glueing (it comes in gloss but for glueing i prefer matte. I also use a scraper to smooth bubbles.

    • @bethdelmonte-catanese6925
      @bethdelmonte-catanese6925 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deeh9563 anything w the word gel tends to be for heavier pieces and matte medium is more fluid so you would think of that for thinner pieces of collage i use matte medium and gel medium matte for everything. In my opinion it’s very superior. I also use liquitex matte medium and liquitex matte gel.

    First, many thanks for sharing so much of your process. Really enjoying observing how you work. One question: You say at the start that you are going to work horizontally with a landscape orientation, but after that you refer several times to the short side as the top. Could you please clarify.
