      They weren't really popular until the Camaro and Chevelle prices went through the roof start in the late 80's. The older Chevy II\Nova's were great performers too and extremely light when pared with a L79 327, all that needed to be address was the wheel hop problem common to all leaf spring Chevy's.

    Nice video as usual. Racers were putting together 301's by taking a 327 and putting in a 283 crank long before GM did and they called it a 302. GM made them stronger in 69 by using bigger bearings. 8000-8500 rpms if I remember right. I like the 400 small block on the circle track. I had a great 406 and now a 421 stroker. Lots more torque than a 355, 373 or a 383. You can get more HP out of a Chevy for less money.

  • @dinos0429
    @dinos0429 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Pontiac definitely! There's so much interesting history about them, especially the racing! The engines Pontiac produced for racing are legendary, possibly seeing a 421 super duty car? Or maybe even the elusive Ram Air V... And yes, I mean V. In 1969 and 1970 Pontiac produced a very limited run of Ram Air V engines that you could buy at the dealer, and were going to be able to be installed at the factory in '70 but were cancelled last minute. Estimates say that only a little over 200 engines were built. These engines supposedly produced over 500 horsepower and made ridiculous torque.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Ram Air V's were ever installed in production cars from the factory.

    • @dinos0429
      @dinos0429 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GlassTopRX7 were going to. Pontiac had intended to at some point, but the higher ups killed it before it could happen. I even said that you could only get them at the dealers. I am well aware none were installed at the factory.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dinos0429 Actually it appears to have not happen because of a supply chain problem with the rods. However even if they had the parts it would have been a disaster for them. Pontiac never solved the engines critical oil flaw which at high revs trapped oil in the valve covers leading to oil starvation above 6000rpm. It's easy enough to fix today but had they made the Ram Air V's most would have blow up from spun bearings.

    I think I would have pointed out Chevy's extensive use of solid lifter engines for nearly all their hot motors. Also that all their big blocks were rev friendly something that is not the case with many big blocks. Lastly I would have pointed out their blue collar accessibility. One of the byproducts of pulling out of racing officially was they built and extensive and affordable over the counter business that exist to this day.
    In the Z/28 part those are 68's and 67', neither of which came with the DZ, they were MO and MP 302's, they differ slightly from the DZ which was exclusive to 69'. The 67' MP 302 uses a 2 bolt main block with small journals, have chrome valve covers and the oil filler on the intake. I believe it found it's way into some early 68's Z/28. The MO has the large journal 4 bolt main block like the DZ but shares the intake and valve covers of the MP. The DZ uses the (Corvette) aluminum finned valve covers, the oil filler on the driver side valve cover. The MP have weaker bottom ends mostly because of the small journals which held too much heat under high revs, the two bolt mains themselves were plenty strong.

    I would not call those stripes SS stripes. They were not used on the SS Camaro, they were used on the Z28 Camaro, and they were only used on the SS Chevelle and El Camino from '70 to '72. They were not used on any other SS cars, or any other Chevy. The yellow Z28 that you show is a '68, not a '69, and would most likely have a MO 302, not the DZ 302. The DZ 302 was '69 only.

    12 bolt, inferior to the ford 9", and in the 60's and late 70's when you could find them, the Olds or pontiac third member. Chevrolet's Z'28 weren't competitive on the streets drag racing. Bought a new '69 Z-28, needed at least 4:88's to barley compete with big blocks of any manufacturer, replaced it with a 435hp 427 to pull even and finally win. Raced against my cousins 68 Z-28 with 4:88's with my '67 442 Olds, pulled even every race until my shift linkage failed. Chevy aren't special, have raced against and using Chevrolets. Chevrolet's biggest advantage is aftermarket parts. Also anyone looking nostalgically at chevys 283 horse fuel-injection models in '57 weren't around to know that Ford blown 312 was the king of that model year in all types of competitions.
