VW Polo GTI - Better than the Fiesta ST? | WorthReviewing

  • This is the Volkswagen Polo GTI 2022 in Pure White. On the road prices start at £28,065, and the one tested is £30,655.
It has impressive stats for a hot hatch, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 204bhp and 320Nm, weighing less than 1,400kg and a 0-60 time in 6.5 seconds. But it misses the vital part that makes a hot hatch, a hot hatch... and that is, there's no manual gearbox. It's a good car but it's missing that main ingredient.
Thank you Volkswagen for inviting me to test and film their cars.

Sam well done with this review, like you said, a hot hatch always has to be a manual. Buying a auto hot hatch is like having a wife that you've never shagged - what's the point! Also upload that launch vid on TikTok

...is about the dumbest thing I've heard. Different people buy different cars for different reasons, be it looks, performance, fun, practicality etc. I happen to like the look and agility of small sporty cars, but after spending many years mushing a clutch pedal and flicking a gear stick around, these days with road quality, congestion, speed limits, speed bumps, speed cameras...driving just isn't what it used to be, not for me at my stage in life. So, a nice small, sporty, comfy, practical hatch that you can just point and go is perfect. Besides, these aren't traditional autos, they are electronically controlled twin gear boxes. They are quicker than you can shift a manual, and with two hands on the wheel and paddles in manual mode, is arguably just as much fun on twisty roads, and safer too given you have both hands on the wheel.
For a daily driver, I spend significantly more time glad that I've got a DSG than wishing I had a manual, as in 99% of the time vs 1% of the time, if that.

For me, the ST 8.5 is better than the Polo GTI in every single aspect. Not sure how they sell the Polo still, availability perhaps?

For me, the polo is overall a much better car than the ST , but everyone is different . I like both, but I have the polo because every day, use is easier to deal with

@@gamingmadforever6363 I don't doubt the GTI suits you, after all, you would know that better than anyone. I would respectfully suggest though that a true hot-hatch is not is not what suits your everyday needs. When I decided I wanted a car in this category the decision was easy - I ruled out the i20 because of its challenging looks both in and out. The latest ST is the only hot-hatch that comes close to my old 205GTI and offers more fun than cars costing considerably more. That is the deciding factor for me in this category, fun.

They sell it because like I said in a previous response, different people buy different cars for different reasons. Everything is also subjective. I personally don't like the look of either the i20 or ST. The Polo is understated, a bit more grown up, and is arguably a much better all-round daily driver. Agree or disagree all you like because it makes no squat of difference. You buy what you buy based on your preferences, needs and perceptions. Those are different to mine, which are different to the next person. Not so hard to grasp really, this thing called choice.
The definition of a hot hatch is pretty clear, and all three of those cars meet that criteria with differing levels of driver engagement. Your use of "true" hot hatch is just what you think they should be.

@@X22GJP You say in your other response that you have spent 'many years' driving. This would suggest that you are no longer a young man. It's a shame that in all of those years you haven't matured enough to respond in a polite and adult manner.
