My E46 sat for 1 year, then I started it and it had a tick. Drove it for the day and it went away. It's obvious oil is effecting it so I'm wondering if an oil change with that stabilizer you mentioned fixed the problem. Keep us up to date!
I've got the same issue, had it since I bought the car a year ago. I can drive it hard daily or not drive at all the lifter tick is exactly like yours every single morning. Car has been ran on 0w40 it's whole life, I'm running 5w30 at the moment but will be switching to 5w40 on my next oil change. I've had 4 M54's in the past and none of them did this, I think it's more of an issue for cars that haven't been driven as much.
5w40 is the way to go, I'll be doing that on my next oil change. If that doesn't cure it then I'm adding Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer. I'd prefer not too but it might just do the trick. tinyurl.com/y5fhk6fm
is it good to cut it off on initial cold starts, i would think that would disrupt its oil flow while the engine prep to go through its cold start cycle?? I've never shut off my 330ci on cold start unless in an absolute emergency.
Did you somehow fix that ticking noise? Ive got the same rattle/ticking noise always when my car wasnt started for more than 24 hours. When I dont use car for 24hours its hust ticking like yours in 13:20 but when E46 is in garage for 2 days or more Ive got that sound for even 30 seconds or more.
Not sorted yet. I have 2 more things I want to try. First is upping the oil to 5w40 so it's a bit thicker. Failing that I'm going with Lucas Oil Stabiliser. A last resort for me as I hear differing opinions on it. I dunno what the cost is on labour to replace all 24 lifters but it won't be cheap.
@@bimmerclubsport Im running an Liqui Moly 5W40 and recently change valve in oil filter base nad its still the same. To bo honest I don't care anymore. If engine will die I will replace it with another one...
@@M0rV911 Hmmm well that's not good news. The lifter tick won't damage the engine unless it becomes permanently stuck. I'll see what the thicker oil does on mine and take it from there. At the point, it's not a great worry but it is something I want to eventually fix one way or another.
Just an update for everyone experiencing this issue - this is caused by a failed anti drain back valve in the oil filter housing, aftermarket valves are available, search eBay for 'oil cups valve' - read instructions carefully as the valve needs to be ground down to make a proper seal, it is not plug and play. When this valve fails all of the oil drains back into the sump from the oil filter housing and the next time you start the car the oil pressure takes longer to build and the noise you are hearing is the top end running 'dry' until oil is done circulating around the system. This issue is also usually accompanied by the red oil light staying on longer than usual on startup - this should go out immediately right after the battery light. If anyone needs more information feel free to message me and I will be happy to help.
Actually, that procedure is BMW OFFICIAL PROCEDURE for lifter tick. It is a short term remedy. Lifters can be dirty/stuck, oil could be too thinn/too thick or too dirty - broken down old oil! What oil are you using? BMW needs to be driven hard sometimes, do nut lug it at low RPM's - as a result there will be less lifter tick. There is another one old-school trick: After the drive, before the shutdown, rev the engine at 2500-3000 rpm for 15-20 seconds and then shut it out fast. That too eliminates the ticking at next startup.
@@bimmerclubsport Hm. More than enough oil changes then... If it ticks for a few seconds on a cold start, that's ok, happens on a lot of BMW's. Seems like the oil drains from the valvetrain. You should try thicker oil, like 10w-40. I have the same engine and I use it. It slightly reduced my oil consumption, works great even in moderate winter.
@@bimmerclubsport I have an suspicion. The second morning cold start in your video (13min 20sec) sounds pretty like a chain rattle to me. I had the same thing too and it was confusing. Chain tensioner is a "must do" job after 15-20 years. Search the BMW forums online, there are few good "do it yourself" topics. You buy just the tensioner spring from the dealer, and change it in 15 min by yourself. It also affects cold start noise A LOT.
What's wrong is one of the lifters is ticking. :) It's still the same but I'm looking to try something on the next oil change. I'll post the findings on the channel.
May I ask if you discovered a permanent cure for this issue? My E46 325ci manual all so has this apparent issue and more importantly cold start effected, may I ask if you found a permanent repair for this issue? I tried the lubricant additive (Liqui Moly 20004 Hydraulic Lifter Additive), but it did not assist. The car has been regularly serviced with Shell Helix 5W-40 Ultra oil changes.
Called a "bleed down" procedure. Sometimes it works, sometimes no. You have to keep doing it. About once a week/month depending on how stuck the lifter is. Real fix is to clean the lifters manually out of the car
I have the tick for 5-10 secs on cold starts (330ci). Started at 230 000km. Just give it a little gas and it goes away. Was worried the engine was suffering. Glad its not serious.
