I watched this while having a bath, drying, dressing, making food, eating, washing up, texting friends, playing guitar, regularly pausing to think or express my ideas (basically talking to myself), and getting annoyed when TH-cam wouldn't play after pausing, requiring a restart of the app or clearing the cache. Very informative and interesting talk. Thanks.

The myth that you grow out if it…I was told this for years as I just got worse and worse and all the counselors i went to would prescribe me antidepressants…this was even 15 years ago….so for years I was on and off all of the different antidepressants…which just made me mentally depressed….then finally when I was at a new Dr for a yearly exam, he asked me if I had ever been diagnosed with adhd….i wasnt even there for any mental reasons….anyway He ended up prescribing adderal and it changed my life ……he saw the symptoms of adhd as he was just asking me general health questions…it sure makes me wonder about the other people that id seen for most of my life ..if they shouldnt be in that business…

This is the most compassionate & hopeful presentation I have ever heard on this topic. ~ I am very sorry to have grown up in the sixties & the board of ed were not prepared to help me & my brothers adequately. My brother would suddenly get a burst of energy & have to run, and he would run without realizing where he was running. Unfortunately he ran into the street in front of a car..His life has always been a struggle & he couldn’t make friends because of his acting out. ~ I had other problems including childhood depression. ~ This Doctor is very well prepared & understands the dysfunction from an extremely broad spectrum. He is correct about requesting lots & lots of information on all aspects of the child’s life. 😀😇🙃😘Thankful to listen to this./ BTW, my brother was prescribed strong meds & it made him extremely violent & unstable. I forgot what the meds were, he was like 8 ?

Agreed and you and me both Miss Merry! As a curious and self-researching Psych. RN, but one who never had kids or was interested in things like ADHD, I didn't figure it out until my hormones started shifting in late 40's and my life started falling apart as my usual coping skills, I intuitively developed [and still use] , were suddenly no longer effective and that is when I really started researching, every spare moment, and discovered my shocking truth....those missing puzzle pieces that explained so much of my life [and validated just how fucked up and challenging it has been!]. Yeah, and that's coming from a "mental health nurse" of so many years. Talk about living with "Imposter Syndrome" all of your life, to boot....Tragic. OMG, and a perfect example of "ADD" or "SCT" or "CDD"! I have just responded from something 4 years ago?! Ha ha ha [not the first time....even worse when you suddenly realize you are reading your own previous response from years ago that you forgot you wrote which was also years later from the original post,...done that one, too, haha]. It was a little comforting to learn that "that is actually a pretty common happening" [that I just described with posts].

I noticed signs with developmental delays when my son was younger. I never got him tested. I figured I could guide him and he'll eventually "mature". He is now having difficulty in academics and is showing progression of developmental delay at age 10. I'm on the path of finding out if he has a disorder of any sort. He was diagnosed with ADD and will be evaluated for Autism Spectrum. The psychiatrist wanted to put him on medicine from his first visit. This video was very helpful. Knowing the different issues that mimic ADHD and getting an accurate diagnosis for my son is vital because he's not super hyper but the total opposite. I wouldn't want him medicated for the wrong illness. Thank you!

This man has a somewhat unusual prosody, which I only find interesting because its similar to the way I talk. Anyway, thanks for the upload. I've recently gone to a doctor that said I may have ADHD, but it is fairly difficult to find any source of information that isn't fueled by some need to sell me a self help book that only offers obvious advice that doesn't work. This seems a legitimate source of information.

Pretty interesting. I was diagnosed with mild ADD when I was in first grade. Took medication for a couple years but it gave me headaches and made me depressed. Pretty sure it screwed me in high school as I barely completed it. However post high school I thrive with whatever I find the motivation to pursue. I do have trouble focusing on single things but I've come to learn how to utilize my abilities to my advantage. Usually I excel with philosophy and strategy.

      My guess is that-
If the video could only be watched once you started it, without the choice of being able to watch it later.
If involved a woman you find very hot, getting naked, regularly changing clothing etc, I think 1h27, would probably not lose much of your attention for its duration.
Providing that more pressing external forces weren't pulling you away/ stopping you.
That would be because there's a strong natural, powerful stimulant - the female.
      ?

this is geared toward people without these conditions, I found it extremely difficult to listen to and from what I learned is that they still do not understand people with and their approach to treatment will be with chemicals. I have found canniubis really helps one to deal with ADHD/Dyslexia. one never growes out of but just learn how to cope. this university need to put someone with the condition in control in order to help us. Normal people really are in the dark in trying to understand. I am older but only recently come to understand my condition. it I survived the military but civilian world is more difficult because it is geared towards normal people.

Sorry if this seems rude to anyone but I just want to tell my point of view as well.
First of all, I have adhs as well and I don't think that this "just a disorder" it's part of me and will always be.
I can't understand why such things are called "disorders" there are not.
Sure some have to be treated, to prevent life threatening situations. But it's part of who we are. It think so.
I can't understand why everyone and everything has to be like the norm...
Maybe it's because I am very young and I cant understand how important that is.
But this behavior will lead to serious conflicts, in individuals.
Because "who says what is normal?" and what is normal?
Sorry if this is rude, I don't want to blame anyone. I just want to aks this to questions and want to learn more about this.

Is a disorder if your immediate circle of people HAVE TO keep you "going" in life (before 6 years old) because you are no coping with life.... like routines of daily life or learning, is hard and important for everyone around you and also for and ADHD person future.

    • @stevenadam6489

      It's subjective.
Since I was born, 37 years ago, I never been diagnosed, and i can tell you that i would have love to be... Because my whole life was a mess, I did not finished highschool, half my adult life was unemployement, addictions, messing up relationships, slowly going down on every aspect of my life, and i had no idea why... It is a disorder, when you are impaired that much... But as soon as you know it, then you can try to deal with it more easily because everything suddenly makes sense. You can adapt you lifestyle with ADHD, for sure. But if you have no idea, good luck with that, because it just does'nt make any sense for some people afflicted with it.
Note that we would not have any "disorder" if society was different. I would completely agree with that. Humans did not have such complicated society for the last 200.000 years. But today, society is what it is. We have to deal with it, but without knowing how our specific brain works, it's pretty hard...
I hope that you will understand this point of view.

You're asking the right questions. I'm not young and I also ask what's normal and who's competent to tell it. I do take meds which do help me but only to behave similar to "normal", so I can keep up with my responsibilities in order to have a better life. If there were not people telling everyone what's normal, I wouldn't need it. I'm totally fine being myself and I wouldn't change anything.

It's funny. Almost every video on this subject by clinicians on TH-cam is an hour or more. So clearly, this content isn't meant for people struggling with that which is being discussed.

Charles Woodruff I thought this was geared more towards clinicians. But I did enjoy the content and found it extremely helpful when trying to see if this affects your kids. Play a puzzle game or something while you’re listening, or do some chores with it on in the background. Also helps to speed up the playback rate.

Thank you for the upload. Very informative. How young do children have to be to be observed as I'm slightly worried about my daughter. She recently turned 4 and usually doesn't listen to me. I am made to look like a total idiot while other parents smile smugly with their kids behaving and listening. There was a woman in America who didn't wish to put her son on ADHD medication, as she didn't like the way it made him "woozy" so she enrolled him in multiple sports and creative programs that allowed the child to "exert" and "express" himself and therefore he didn't have this built up frustration of energy and was able to avoid the meds naturally. I know there's a lot of money poured into this medication and studies etc and who am I as a single mother to look into alternatives, but I strongly believe that it's our role as parents to protect our children and ask for all the facts before we just agree. We don't know what is in these meds and if it pretty much makes children a zombie I don't think I'm going to put my baby girl through that 😔 she's 4 now and I don't think I will subject her to this. I think she deserves a different approach and obviously it's me who's failing somewhere in my approach.

Sometimes the kids observed (1:1) can focus on the adult assessing them, so they can ‘seem’ focused for a short stretch. It’s better to watch kids in a group because you can see them being impulsive and bouncy or inattentive/spaced out or missing instructions/content/directions given in a classroom or inpatient setting.

Most drug addicts are life ruining people who need treatment! Please stop abusing medication and if you have conditions that need to be treated please surrender to get help ! This is very frustrating for myself - and I’m am also sure to others who are trying to get the right help as well -

    • @Hugo-dc9nd

All drug addicts actually need help (meds) and some of them ask for it but don't get it and some are not aware of that need. However, since their need stays unmet they take drugs they can find/afford and medicate themselves. There are many adhd-ers without diagnosis among drug addicts.
