    Thanks for the great videos. I’ve just bought a 30kw leaf thanks to your encouragement.
    Also it’s very difficult to pick up a kona or Kia but walked into showroom and walked out with a 2 year old low milage techna and still in first 2 weeks ownership loving it.
    Paying 16p/kw now and No charger yet so this video pointed me in the right direction again. Thanks.

    We already had a Pod-Point so went for the Ohme Cable option, works great with Agile too - being paid to charge the car tonight as the rate is dropping below zero for six hours over night. Great combination.

    I like your videos. Its great that you share your findings, especially for new EV owners, about this charger and to be aware of the different rates that your power company charges. In the USA, we also have so many rates of power and different suppliers depending on where you live. I don't think we have rates that change every 30 minutes like you do. Our EV rates typically begin at 11pm to 6 or 7 am which provide the lowest rates. But then the rest of the day the rates are a bit higher than other rate plans would be. I don't know if it makes sense to lock into a plan for the car but to be charged more for operation of the home electricity when someone is always home, especially if you can charge somewhere near work or a mall for free?

    Very timely video just bought a house and need to sort out a charger for my PHEV hope to switch to a full EV soon but do about 200 miles a night and my day driver dose about 100 miles 4 days a week. On Monday and Thursday the car only gets a few hours rest. Its used as a Taxi. So working the maths out is hard.
    Putting in a large home battery pack and Inverter to draw electricity into the pack during the cheap times at night to run during the day and may integrate it into a 4 KW solar system if the property is suitable.

  • @Richard-io9xe
    @Richard-io9xe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I am going with the zappi for the simple reason that when you are home during the day, it can be set to trickle charge using only the excess from my solar panel generation that the house isn't using and that would otherwise be fed back to the grid for a pittance of a return. So I get maximum benefit from my panels. Plus it can be set to time the charge overnight to use the 5p rate on Octopus Go. Win win.

    You can buy from Octopus for £200. It can be screwed to the wall. I got one with a commando plug so can plug straight in. Commando socket cost about £50 to install all inclusive. No messing about with OLEV as it's not technically a dedicated charger.

      Hi Michael, we realise it can be frustrating to need to provide some of the information for the OLEV Grant, but unfortunately it's a Government department so they are quite strict and have a vigorous process when checking the eligibility of those claiming the Grant. But it's still worth it as £500 towards a charger and installation is a significant sum :)

    I was working on my settings over the last few days. I have a dumb charger and fixed rates for electricity ( in US where I think am paying about 12cents a kWh ). I entered false off peak schedules into the car ( Chevy Bolt ) that end when the wife leaves for work in order to create early morning charging windows and told the car to only charge during off peak hours. My goal is to run the 32 amp charger at a time when I am not heating water, running the stove or the house AC ( no natural gas here unfortunately ). She is doing 20 miles a day so she only needs to plug in about twice a week. She gets nervous when the car drops into double digits.
    Absolutely rotten around here for fast chargers. They are pricey ( 30 cents ) but would be very handy if you suddenly needed a quick charge. Nearest is more than 10 miles away and I live in a very built up area. Most likely not an issue if you own a Tesla.

    Brilliant!!! This is something I've been waiting for since getting a solar/powerwall/ASHP combo which at the time of buying was far from financially viable. Hopefully Tesla manage to update the PW gateway to charge on the lower rates.
    EV will be arriving in April when the BIK rate drops to 0% and then hopefully combined with this tariff and an Ohme I'll have a few years of clawing back some of my investment (until our wonderful Govt. bumps the tax back up.....).
    Also can't wait for IFTTT.... If there's no sun and the rate is low then charge the Powerwall.... Perfect....

    Good video. I purchased one and love it. However - Have you ever experienced any problems when your OHME didn’t charge, having set your threshold to only charge, say within a plunge period? Reason I’m asking. OHME state that they get the tariff data from Octopus 24hrs in advance and by 4pm that day. However, OHME said on one occasion they missed this, as they created a schedule without the negative pricing listed and therefore the car didn’t charge during the plunge times. Is this a common issue or not something you are familiar with?

If you say the average across the night is around 4p to 6p, for the 4 hour window on Octopus Go at 5p, I could still pull around 28kW in this 4 hour window which would probably give around 90 miles of range? An issue you've made a vid about. Anyhow, I recently took delivery of a Mercedes EQA 250 AMG Line. Great car, but disappointingly, it won't schedule a charge, where my previous EVs had that capability. I'm debating whether to buy the Ohme type 2 lead, subsidised by Octopus (£200) and plug it into my Rolec, or just have a new Ohme wall box charger fitted to my house. (Guessing about £500) I'm slightly concerned the cable could get nicked, as obviously it just unplugs from the Rolec and the Merc has an unlock button on the charge port. You're. a sensible Yorkshire lad. What would you do, any thoughts? P.S. I'm on Octopus Go Tariff.

      I am not aware of any car that draws 48 Amps on single phase power. What car is this?
      Some cars can connect to three phase power such as my BMW i3 which will charge at up to 11kW on three phase (16 Amps per phase), some such as Renault Zoe can charge at up to 22kW on three phase (32 Amps/phase). If your new car does support three phase it will charge quite happily on a single phase supply, but you will be limited to 7kW charging rate. In the UK three phase supply in domestic properties is rare, but it is common in continental Europe.

    How does this work with preheating/preconditioning? If I'm leaving the house at 6:15am, and pre conditioning kicks off at 3am or preheating closer to departure time , can it still be providing power to the car? e.g. ensure you're charging between target and target- 3.5hours

    • @ElectricVehicleMan
      @ElectricVehicleMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is something I noticed when I got it. You’d have to manually override on the app to start it charging. Or create a schedule so it starts just after the preheat. They are working right now on a easier proper built in solution though.

      @@ElectricVehicleMan Cool! Something like aim for full - 3 hours worth of charging (e.g. 80%) at departure time-3 hours. That would probably be a decent way of doing it. Excellent Video EVM. I had an OLEV grant back in 2015 when I bought my first EV (24KWH Leaf) and had a dumb charger installed (Chargemaster tethered). Dear EVM, yes I know the type 2 plug is ac and the ccs is dc, but only the bottom two pins are dc, the top bit is type 2 ac that is why ccs is a “combined” connector. I want to just access the top bit of the ccs to get the ac output, but my car socket is only a type 2, the bottom bit off my socket is blanked off, so the connector won’t plug in. Intavolt charging points have tethered ccs cables so I can’t use them, if there was an extension for the top bit of their ccs plugs, I could plug it into my car. That would mean, the local Intavolt points could be accessed, whereas, they are currently no good for me. That is why I asked if there was an adapter and would it solve the problem. Regards, Phil.

I’ve set my charger, which is a Zappi to charge between those hours. My Tesla Powerwall Charges up between the same hours ready for use during the day. At 4pm every day Octopus publish (on their website and via their API) the next day's pricing. The charger's software can then figure out when to charge the car. I believe the charger software can also talk to some manufacturers' APIs to interrogate the car's SOC and issue charge start/stop commands (rather than just switching the power on/off which some cars don't like (Teslas in particular)).

    What I like about this is it puts you in control, as opposed to the smart grid deciding when to switch off your smart devices.
    Give it a few years though and the off peak demand from electric cars will narrow the savings,. It will get cheaper to charge in the daytime when solar capacity peaks, so we'll want power connections to every parking space.

These days, shop warehouses receive their Winter holiday stock in September. On 24th December, or the last trading day before it, they'll be taking delivery of the 14th February and easter stock. It's all about maximising profit and extracting as much cash as possible from gullible customers. Pardon my cynicism, but it's valid.

    Anybody have experience with the Ohme with a BMW i3S or i3. I find the BMW software in the car and their Connected app pretty frustrating, so one of these maybe the answer for home charging at least. However, will the Ohme work as displayed on this video, or is it more limited, such as, limiting the maximum charge to a certain percentage etc.
    I currently have a POD tethered charger, but this is a very basic charger. If I already have a charger installed on my property (having already used the Government grant scheme,), what price are you likely to have to pay? Interested in the Ohme, but having only recently got the POD charger back in May this year, concerned on the expense of changing to a Ohme.

  • @uknick

    You mentioned an average cost per kWh of under 5p but when you showed the list of half hour increments there wasn’t anything under 7p. This only works IF and it’s a big IF the cost significantly undercuts other off peak tariffs. At the moment it’s hard to find anything much under 8p whereas a couple of years ago I got 4.5p with Green Energy UK. With a tariff like that you don’t need the smarts and also as a PW2 owner I need to know my off peak tariff to optimise my battery charging.
    So I would like to see an AVERAGE off peak at under market rate say 7.5p with the option to take advantage of much lower rates for filling up the EV during the night say 2-4p/kWh
    Yes I want my cake and eat it :-)
