    I made some arrows a long time ago as a kid/teenager. I’m now in my 30s and getting back into it. I very much appreciate this whole series, it has been very helpful, well done. Thank you!

    It’s the best series by far on wooden arrow making and I appreciate the knowledge of products available but also that you encourage trying new things. I refer to this always just before I start a batch of arrows

    Andy, great series! I've some of it three times and am amazed at the labor that goes into making quality, esthetically pleasing arrows. Keep up the good work!

      3riversarchery has the same brand of dippers. There is also a stand that is compatible with the dippers, and there is also an attachable wood piece that vise grips into a table which does the same thing as the stand but also saves space. Hope this helps.

    I can't really get the Dallys where I live, what could I possibly use, even if it's not as good? Would Shellac work?

    If I understood you correctly, you crown dip and crest after you've sealed the arrow 3 times? Then for the last coat you use the crest lac for the crown dipped and crested portion, and Daly's Profin for the rest of the shaft?

    Having trouble sealing over the cresting. I crested with Crest-Lac (cresting paint), allowed it to dry for 35 hours and dipped Minwax Polycrylic. The cresting dissolved. Did I not wait long enough for the cresting to dry, or is Minwax Polycyrlic the problem? Thanks for your help. Your series is great.

    i have used boiled linseed oil and it lasts a while unsure of how long but I have used it with the wood arrows and it is clean and smooth much better than danish oil or desk varnish and it is very cheap and is very clear look and feels great

    I haven't tried Daly's. What are your thoughts on water-bourne acrylic sealers. Pros and cons? I've been using them for a bit, but I might give Daly's a try.

    Hey Andy, just discovered your channel. Very well done! My question is why do my arrows blister? I'm using gasket lacquer. 3 coats steelwool between each coat. I'm guessing it has something to do with moisture. Seems to happen when its cold...below freezing. How do I remove the moisture content from the shafts? (POC) shafts. Thanks! Rob

    Birchwood Casey tru oil, work into arrow by rubbing...then apply small amount of Armour All and work in by rubbing until dry (2 min wait) then add another layer....more layers the darker it gets.....if you want a high gloss finish spray with mineral oil after each coat and when done buff with 0000 steel wool....very pretty arrows!!!! Don't know if will give target burn-don't shoot 3-D targets....

    Andy, why don’t you only use the crest lac clear coat throughout the whole process instead of using both (Daly’s and crest lac)?

  • @wildthing3112

    What do you do with the sealant and paint that's still in the tubes? Do you leave it in there and screw on an airtight cap? Or do you pour it back into its original can then clean out the tube?

    So when would you cap dip with white to get the really white look?
    Really enjoying this series!

    I’m about to make my first set of arrows and have been watching through your videos( some a couple of times) and they have been incredibly informative and helpful. Concerning sealers; I looked for Daly’s profin and noticed that the company has stopped producing, what do you use now instead?
    I was looking into using Ronseal water based varnish for dipping mine, but I’ve read a few things about using it over a water based Dye and potentially lifting the dye out.
    As I’m getting things slowly as I go along, I was also thinking of using water based acrylics for cresting. I’m not sure whether they’re all going to just strip each other off. I saw in one of your videos about using water or oil and it not being compatible with dye?( I can’t fully remember and I don’t think I fully understood).

    Is it absolutely necessary to seal arrows? I am learning to fletch my first small batch of arrows and I don’t have all the supplies for sealing yet.. but I want to go ahead and make some to shoot. Any thoughts?

    • @addictivearchery1123
      @addictivearchery1123  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do not seal your arrows they will absorb moisture. This will affect their weight, durability and possibly the stiffness.

  • @wildthing3112

    • @addictivearchery1123

      I never did. You can use lacquer thinner but I used it so fast I never needed to thin it.

    How much does each coat of lacquer add to the spine of the arrow?

    • @shanemccarthy3005
      @shanemccarthy3005 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was wondering this too. Did you ever find out if the finish affects the arrow spine by a significant amount?
      EDIT: If it does, you could add point weight. With wooden arrows that'll be more difficult because you'll probably need a point adapter instead of glue-on points.

  • @billmclaughlin8438
    @billmclaughlin8438 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you find that after all the coats of sealers that it changes the spline weight?

    • @addictivearchery1123
      @addictivearchery1123  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill McLaughlin no not at all. I can’t say it’s like that for every finish, but for my system there is no spine change with 4 complete coats of finish.

      The book is written by Clay Hayes. I just helped with a chapter on arrows. I am out of stock at the moment but you can find it here. www.twistedstave.com/shop/traditional-bowyers-handbook-bow-building-book/
      Thanks for watching.

      Ok, I'll order it. Thanks. After staining my arrow or dipping the whole shaft in white True North dipping paint, can I then seal in Dailys Pro Fin to keep the shaft from sticking in my Saunders straw bale mat? I have always had trouble with full length dips in the past. Love you teaching videos👍

    Any one ever try using linseed oil?

    • @tamepenguin
      @tamepenguin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes :) Boiled linseed oil. Dip for a couple of minutes (or paint on with a brush or rag), let dry 5-10 minutes, wipe away excess. Leave to dry for 24+ hours.
      Imho hands down the best finish (creates a finish inside the wood, instead of only on the outside), but takes quite a long time to dry. Perfect for private use, completely unsuited for selling :)
      For something special (I found out by accident) : Don't wipe away the excess. Creates a thick, glossy and luxurious finish, but takes 10-12 months(!) to dry :)
      My most beautiful arrows - unfortunately, they were meant for a 16 pound newbie bow :)

    Olive oil, just wipe down with paper towel on the shaft. It is a valid cheap choice.

  • @rexfrost5246

    Put paste wax on the shaft.

    • @addictivearchery1123

      Rex Frost no. That would inhibit the clear sealer from adhering to the shafts.
