- This video is about Making Traditional Wood Arrows. I video tape myself to show my process in making some premium wood arrows for a customer.
Note: These are not primitive arrows. I use power tools and modern wood finishing products to make these arrows.

Hello! My name is Dave Schaub. I first saw you on Instagram. I was impressed with your work.
I’m 71 now and my dad gave me a small, but functional longbow when I was 6. I have a picture of it. That and my favorite place where I would ride my bicycle was loaded with pheasants.
I meant a big cock bird face to face on a well worn path. He just stood there like he was waiting for me to get out of his way. He looked three feet tall to me because I was so small. I carefully pulled back as far as I could and watched the arrow sail right over his head. 😊
After searching for my arrow that I finally found. I realized how easy it was to lose an arrow. My brain was racing trying to figure out what I could use that I have at my disposal. I remember we found that we didn’t have a clue. what were we to do. So I went to the library and found a couple of books to help me along.
We had a archery shop
in town so I would ride my bike to pick up supplies. That very store sold all kinds of bows and of course I fell in love with one.
With my very first paycheck I hopped on my bike and went and bought my Red Wing Falcon.
I would shoot and shoot that bow so much I graduated to shooting wood chucks. That’s when I found out that shooting at chucks is very hard on arrows. It’s either the rocks or the Chuck breaks them diving in there hole. So I started making my own.

What a great video from start to the finished arrow, Andy l didn't realise just how much work went into making arrows . At a guess l would say maybe 100+ hours for a dozen arrows , but what a beautiful end product Thank's for sharing this insight into making arrows. This has got to be the best series on TH-cam 👍👍👍
Your arrow are works of art as well as perfectly functional.
Over a long life I have made many arrows, but none were as great looking as yours, you a true craftsman. My arrows were functionally perfect, and they killed everything from squirrels to elk, but again, they sure weren't beautiful like your arrows are. Thank you for the video.

It's so much fun building arrows. I myself stopped for years with archery and now I want to get back into it, and your videos and those of clay hayes really brought the fire back!

I've been shooting a bow ever since I was two and this guy makes the best arrow I've seen other than me when I make my own he only left out one thing is showing grain going away from the archers hand in case one breaks also I do a trick on putting on field poits I drill a small hole through them and after gluing them on I pin them with brass so you don't loose one in a new 3d. Target. This guy can build arrows also I hit the back of the flinching with glue from moisture
Hey, love your videos! Thanks for taking the time to share the knowledge. You helped inspire me to get started on making my own arrows. Everything involved in the process is new to me, but its all coming together bit by bit.
I'm having problems getting my points to fit, after finishing the shaft. I think the shaft is swelling, as well as the lacquer build up. I'm sanding, using the bearpaw taper tool, methylated spirits to raise the grain, sanding, alcohol stain, sanding, 3 times cellulose sanding sealer with sanding between, nock, crest, 3 or 4 dips in acrylic lacquer. Also keeping straight along the way.
I nock after sealing to help deal with getting them to fit after painting and lacquer, but I'm struggling with points. I'm thinking of trying the next size points up?

Very nice! I am wondering if you sometimes vary the number of dips of some of the arrows to even out weight within a set?
Yes towards the end I will weigh them to make sure they are staying within ten grains or less.
@Addictive Archery can you also use kind of straight sticks from the hardware store (i life in the Netherlands so it's quite different here😂 but it's almost the same) cause im a very beginner in this so i have a small budget and schafts from an archery store are at a long period a little bit to exspensive for me.
Hey Andy what brand / model are those clips you use to hang the arrows? I heard you mention it in another video but can’t find it... love the videos and thanks for sharing your craft.
How do you determine which end is best for the nock and which end is best for the point other than the ability to "cut out" any bend in the shaft?

Very important to look at the direction of the wood grain to determine the orientation of the nock. Make sure the rift is on top. If the shaft should give out upon release, you want the shaft to go above your bow hand...not down into it. Highly recommend 'The Traditional Bowhunter's Handbook' by T.J. Conrads, chapter 15, page147-148.

You are indeed a craftsman. I’m very impressed. Your arrows are perfect to my way of thinking.
A problem I have is my 33” + draw length. I’ve had archery shops have me pull a draw measure because they didn’t believe me. I’m sure there are people bigger than me with a longer draw. Why is it so difficult for people like me to get the arrows we require, and even bows are becoming hard to find.
Not recurve or long bows but modern compound bows for hunting. I’ve been told I have to put a three or four inch loop on the string for some of these small modern compound bows. Frustrating.
do you shoot a traditional bow? Someone should be able to make a larger version for you then for some one like me that has a 28 inch draw.
Great video showing all the steps. I noticed that you used a different clear coat for the crested end over the cresting. then you did for the shaft. Could you explain? And if you wanted to paint the part under the Fletching, would you still stain first or not? Thanks.
Great question Mark. Yes when I clear coat over painted areas I dip in a water based clear. This maintains the bright white appearance. The shaft (point) end gets Dalys Pro Fin, which is oil based and will “yellow” the paint slightly.

I use True North water based sealer. Check out my newest series for exactly how to use it.
It is really beautiful work ,but if i were shooting these arrows with a thought of loosing one i would for shore miss the target because most of us are medium budget archers
wow im surprised grinding the feathers, and painting it i thought it was tape on the feathers looks so clean
I have so many questions, do u start with round shaft or square. In love in northern ontario in the east no douglases here but tamarack n most other coniferous trees.
Are arrows made from the tree or branches the best!! I am not into making primitive arrows for my primitive bows but use tools to replicate the past, too young to have the patience maybe for straightening by hand every couple days. n finding shoots or arrows look good outside but when I skin them there like 3 or 4 hood arrows rest waste, I don’t like taking life n wasting it.

where do you get the bottle/tube for dipping the shafts in I'm using PVC pipe but the cap is finicky and a pain for me yours have screw on caps just what I need

Just preference. As long as all the helicals are the same per arrow and match the bevel of broadhead if your shooting a single bevel they should fly great.
What cresting machine do you use?
Sorry for commenting on older video but what clamps are you using you hang your shafts I've been using close pins but they don't work
Jonathan Wilfred Michelin they are a clothes pin with a rubber pad. Sometimes they are labeled for “delicate clothing “. They work great. Thanks for watching.

They are made for delicate clothing and have a little rubber gripper in the jaws. I don’t remember the brands.
How do i go about ordering some arrows from you ?
I remember watching my cousin make his own arrows years ago. He collected his own feathers and after being glued on rotated the arrow through a hot wire to shape each one. I cannot believe the price of commercial feather fletchings. I made my own cresting machine power by a electric screw driver and can interchange cards to alter the patterns.
@GVET ? Have to be careful about gathering feathers? Some officious Game and fish guy might believe that You are poaching! I have a friend who collects WILD GOOSE feathers when they are moulting. Has to be very careful! He is not doing anything wrong but some officials just care about the tickets!

Very pretty, but not very traditional, no self or horn nocks, just plastic nocks? Fletching not bound, just glued? Would not be allowed in any of the traditional contests I've entered.
I've been shooting arrows for years made very similar to this. Fletching doesn't have to be bound as long as it's finished on the ends with some extra glue like this they work just fine
