No turbo, no direct injection, no electric parking brake, no cylinder deactivation. (all things that either fail before 100k or increase maint costs)
Just change the transmission fluid every 25k and the car will be great.
As the economy goes down the tubes, this will fit a family of 4, and the only new car they will be able to afford.

I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze though and overall that is actually a better car in terms of power, mileage, space and I don't think it looks bad either in the RS Package.
I have a 6spd manual, but now I have to swap the transmission here past 112k because of other failures.

@@danwake4431 Well known problem with the Cruze, Sonic, VM Golf, VW Rabbit, Trax, etc
The output shaft bearing goes bad if the transmission fluid isn't changed regularly (around 20-25k I read is best and 50k Minimum) and you drive the car hard/long distances.
Since the transmission is small and the fluid heats up and it cooks the fluid.
Best thing is to switch to Amsoil fluid which has much higher temp tolerance to save the transmissions.
Bought my 2012 versa manual new for 10,400 out the door. 276,000miles later still going like a champ but it’s getting rusty and worn i honestly never expected it to last this long. I bought it as a cheap throw away commuter thinking it be junk after 100k but I ended up keeping it because it’s been such a great car that’s needed minimal maintenance. I’ve had a new car on order for 7-8months now I’m getting sick of waiting and I’m thinking of canceling it and just buying another versa lol
I bought a 2018 base model 5 speed new for $11,500 out the door. Good little car. The most basic car I could find. Averages 41 mpg .

No way you got a Sentra that cheap in the USA.
I remember 2018. People bought new Jettas for 14k. I personally bought a new Corolla for 16k. (-2k from MSRP!). It is depressing to see very few cars are under 20k now.

@@markjohnston2675 There are many types of engineers, I'm a recording engineer aka music/record producer, I do mechanics as well when I'm not glued to the helm of the SSL recording console. alxxx9065 might be a mechanical engineer, I don't know but that's my hypothesis since they are here on a car channel.
@@Malte-Micha Yes thanks for the common knowledge...Perhaps I'm a engineer also, I just don't think it something that needs to be announced, especially on subjects that only require common sense to understand...In other words maybe the one who proclaims that they are (fill in the blank) or have whatever degree are more impressed with themselves than others of them.
I would only buy the manual, save money and future headaches as well.
The manual will spin at 4000 rpm at 75mph, feels like it needs a 6th gear.

@@tdgdbs1 Probably cost saving, it's cheaper to manufacture 5 speed vs 6 speed. Also the engine is pretty weak with not a lot of power or torque so if it had a 6-speed with lower revs you would have no overtaking ability or acceleration at high speed, it would probably even struggle to maintain 75 mph uphill.

The problem with manual is that only offered for base. It’s like a trap to get people use cvt for the higher trim. Manual should be an option on all trims
Since hardly anybody factory orders cars anymore, if they randomly made fancier models with a manual, nobody would buy them off the lot - at least not in the USA.
So true! I have a 2021 S 5-Speed. The dealer took over 2 months to find one & raped me on sale price. At the time, it was almost impossible to find a manual Versa. I am very happy with my Versa & sleep well at night not worrying about the CVT going out. For the price I paid, I feel I should have had all the SR options on my Versa, not the base level ones. On the good side the Base level S, comes with very good standard features.
These are often bought by young women in college or 1st job. In the US most women really don't buy manual. Not saying anything about ability...just objective observation. Fewer women are willing to drive, especially pay fir a stick shift unless it is a posh euro sportcar.
This being the ubiquitous secretary car.
This might be the one car where i would actually recommend the base model. You're really not missing much compared to the SR & the suspension with the 15 inch tires is great!
I remember a few years ago like when I bought a car in 2010 Manuals could only be found in the Sport Models and before that in the 80's manuals were well STANDARD you paid extra for an automatic
Bought this for my 17 y.o. daughter. I haven't looked at small econo-boxes since I finished college in 1994; I was stunned when I test drove this. Smooth ride, quiet at 75 mph, ROOMY!, interior looked better than "I'm the cheap one", and the mpg was incredible. Also, that upgraded stereo system sounds far better than it ought to----it is better than the HK system in my Alfa Romeo. Sure its slow, but who cares? Stomp the pedal to the floor and its noisy but fine; once you are up to speed engine is very quiet. I'm 6 ft and can easily sit behind myself plus the trunk is huge. I was close to getting her an Impreza, but when I drove this it was a slam dunk.
I would think the Impreza would be much safer, now I am wondering about the crash testing on the versa?

I bought one myself too and this Versa was sold all over the counties. I had owned 2016 X4, 2019 X2 and leasing 2024 X1 at my work place $350 a month and I returned it back and bought Versa SR. I loved it since. 😍
@@brettatenciorn8522 Just by a hair. The Versa has a ~5 star NHTSA safety rating. Probably still better than any ten year old use car in its size category, not quite as good as a full 5 star rating of the 2024 Impreza, but at a $4k discount (considering base price).
I have a 2018 Versa ... Over 102,000 miles , runs great and I've never had any issues.
My CVT transmission runs good , no issues... I change the fluid ever 30,000 miles ...
I wish I hadn't listened to my Nissan service dept. when I brought my 2012 Versa in to have the CVT fluid changed at 30k miles and they said it didn't need it and to wait until 50k miles. The CVT started malfunctioning at 38k miles. 🙁
@@palebeachbum that’s insane because I change my CVT fluid on my cars every 80,000 miles and now have 345,000 miles on my 2018 pathfinder and 235,000 miles in my 2019 Altima and CVT has never gave me a issue

The most reliable CVT/auto isn’t having one...
Be careful changing transmission fluid as its really not necessary! CVT will fail when the grommet breakdown inside transmission happens and you change out the fluid! you need the residue breakdown kept inside so the transmission has less slippage possibilities.
In a few years this will be the only car you can get new under 20k
No they will quit making it. We can't have a new vehicle that does not include a mortgage, right?
For people that are thinking about buying Nissan I will give you my experience. I have a 2018 pathfinder 334,000 miles not a single issue with the CVT or anything else. A 2019 Altima with 210,000 miles also 0 issues and a 2021 Sentra with 110,000 miles also never issues. That is why I’ve never understood people always talking about how unreliable the CVT is.
From what I’ve heard it’s usually people who didn’t take proper maintenance of the CVTs who complain Nissans are unreliable

@@dforrest4503it happens, my brand new Versa @ 4 miles 3 months ago and i'm @ 14,700 already. I drive round trip a minimum of 120 miles a day 5 days a week.
It's a crap shoot. My Sentra's transmission took a dump at 61k. Only reason why I still drive Nissans is because the dealership took care of me and fixed the tranny under warranty. I have a Leaf now. The Leaf is worth it for the tax rebate, making it one of the only EVs under 25k.
In the fall of 2006 Nissan introduced the Versa for 2007. I researched the hell out of the market segment and after the wife's final decision in Nov of 2006 we bought her first ever brand new car, a top trim Vesa SL.. 17 years later it is still her daily driver with 142,000 kms on the clock. Suffice to say she has enjoyed the hell out of that little run-about. It would be interesting for TCCN to do a comparison of the oldest vs the newest. I doubt ours has the two injector's per cylinder nonsense. On the CVT, I service as per schedule knowing its shortcomings; so far so good.

Only Canadians will seek out the base model and drive it for 20 years .
CVT’s last longer also when the engine is not too powerful to stress it too much. They don’t like being driven hard, either.
My coworker has a Nissan Sentra from 2021 or newer, and he changed the CVT fluid after like 30k miles. I think he has like 60k miles and no issues
I have a 2017 nissan sentra with 120,600 miles. It is now 7 years old with no issues. I wanted to throw that out there for those wondering how my cvt is holding up. Yes I also changed the fluid religiously every year or so.
I have a 2017 with 144,500 miles. It's been a very very reliable car. It's a manual transmission, and I'm still on the original clutch.
I own a 2021 Versa S, 5-Speed. I have owned it for 3 years now. I love it! I do wish that the "Sportier" SR model came with a 5-Speed option too. The Versa cons for me: 1) Nissan Dealers. 2) CVT Transmissions. 3) 5-Speed only available on Base S model. 4) Cheap hard plastic steering wheel & shifter knob on S models. 5) Cheapest Suspension that I have ever seen(front strut mounting brackets do not have the normal 2 or 3 mounting bolts that hold the struts to the body of the car, they are held to the body by the one main nut of the strut shaft). 6) S Model Radio/Head Unit, does not come with Android Auto & there are no adapter trim plates(yet?) to replace the void that will be left by the unique shape of the stock head unit going to a much better aftermarket head unit. By the way, Nissan dealers will rape you on price, if you buy a new, sub-par SR trim factory head unit with more power, better features & perfect fitment. 7) Factory Seats... this one is really nit picking. The S trim seats are the best base/cheapest economy seats I have ever sat in... but for spirited driving or in the twisty's they do not offer much support. No major Racing Seat Maker offers a 2020+ Versa Mounting Bracket Kit, so upgrading the seats to a Bride or Sparco seat is very difficult. The factory SR trim seats are a little better, but not real sport seats(used they are going for over $400 each, which I might do later?). My driving style is much more aggressive than your average driver that this car was built for, so for most my cons are not a factor. My pros: 1) The looks/external appearance/body. I still think this is the best looking entry/economy car. 2) Standard features. 3) Manual/5-Speed option. Manuals are becoming a very hard to find transmission option on any car sold in North America. 4) Fuel economy. It's not ultra high, but it is better than most larger cars. Even with my driving style, I'm getting 37+ mpg combined. 5) Social Media Communities. There is actually a lot of driver/owner support online for the Versa & unlike a lot of other social media groups Versa owners are actually very nice & respectful. My advice? Buy It with The 5-Speed! But only if you can get it for very close or less than MSRP. Also worth considering, buy a 2020+ Versa S 5-Speed, used(not much has changed since the new model change in 2020) and avoid all the Nissan Dealer BS. As for the other CVT model Versa's... I still don't trust the longevity of CVT transmissions in general(Jetco/Nissan has the worst rep of all CVT's). So I can't really recommend Versa's with CVT's. On the good side, CVT transmission failures happen more often with heavier cars & less often with lighter cars... well the Versa is a very light car & with regular maintenance, most Versa owners have said that their CVT's are lasting a long time & not many failures at all. That's my opinion, but this is the best & most informative video on the current model Versa & I even learned a few things about my car, so Thank You for your video!
I don't have one, but I think it is a nice-looking car. (To say it is not bad is an understatement.) Not everyone wants or can afford a $50,000-$60,000 car, and many of those are put together a lot worse than the economy cars. I love this car in the light gray or the red, and I love the red stitching on the inside. I think the car looks a lot more expensive than it is. Plus, the SR version comes loaded with great features. Had one been around at the dealers when I was purchasing a car, I might have purchased this car in the SR version.

When I first got my versa I was like WTH is with these visors? This is the first car in 30 years that keep the sun glare out of my eyes . Love this car, our 2014 was handed down to our son. This one is way more responsive no regrets ❤ yes both have cvts and regularly maintained.

I got this car new after 10-15 years of luxury cars cause I was over the price gouging and I love it for what it is
I am glad Nissan still makes cars like this as every other maker seems to be abandoning them and we need cheaper cars for the poor and middle class. This is an affordable car and if your afraid of the CVT I have a family member with a Maxima with over 200k miles on it. The key to making a CVT last is service and done way more often than regular transmissions. I think what hurt Nissan in early models was they told buyers it was a sealed transmission for life and people never bothered to service them. If this is all I could afford I would not hesitate in buying one. I think it is better built than other brands like Kia. Personally I would got for a Corolla or Civic if I could afford them.
I would rather not deal with something that has a proven track record of being the biggest piece of dog shyt i.e. the cvt
I would buy a Nissan over a hyundai/Kia any day. Not that I want a modern Nissan. They made great vehicles in the 90's.
Had a base model as a rental. Typical econobox but felt like it had a lot of torque and got great gas mileage.
I had one as a rental as well, that’s what actually prompted me to look into buying one as my commute car.
I think I had an SV trim as a rental 2 years ago, I honestly was impressed how well it drove and equipped for a sub-compact.

@@retroguy1976 if a CVT belt slips... let's just say that poor transmission has had an extremely hard life, as Nissan alone has so many protections in place to keep that belt from slipping on those pulleys. I abuse my car sometimes (a sentra with their infamous CVT) and even under hard conditions like climbing some of the steep hills around here while trying to not rev the motor out to its death, mine handles it fine. Very noisily (which they're known for), but nonetheless it's capable, I'll also add since I've had this car it's still on its original fluid with 140k miles on the clock. Suffice to say you got thrown in one where someone managed to cause the belt to slip and in a motor that small how they managed I have no idea, it would be easier to do in say a Honda Pilot due to the extreme weight added to the steel belt but the higher power output from the v6 engine they have.

I purchased a 2010 versa with a manual 6 speed for my daughter’s first car. It’s the perfect car for a 16 year old. It is extremely slow, your shifting constantly as you accelerate, at 75 mph if you put the gas to the floor you won’t even notice any change. It’ll slowly creep up to maybe 80-85 mph tops. It’s been reliable and it’s easy to work on.

Interesting, in Brazil the HR16DE engine have the normal 4 injectors, it is a reliable. low maintenance engine, ,they're here since 2014 on Versas and Kicks.and much used on Uber services. i am an engineer, the reason why Nissan placed MPI or multi port injectors is for refinement and less carbon build up. Direct injection is good for higher HP but MPI is for reliability and refinement basically. Maker’ s dice.

Yeah, I bought a 14 year old one for my daughter, great car. In fact I’m jealous of the mpg’s as I have a 4Runner.
A kid? According to the 30% rule, meaning you should never spend more than 30% of your salary on a vehicle, meaning for most people that make under $80K a year, this is the most expensive vehicle they should be buying. Its so sad to see that everyone just finances the car now, nobody can actually afford their lifestyle and go into debt.

Here in Asia Pacific the Versa / Almera has some of the best reputation in terms of reliability because we have it in manual transmission. Nissan should be able to sell this spacious affordable car much more

These cars in 2024 are tiny compared to the 2016 models the ground clearance is 5 inches unlike 2023 when it was 6.8 inches and 2016 when it was 7 in

It’s a nice looking and equipped vehicle for the price point. Here in New Jersey you can get an SR for around $22000 to $23000.
The only thing that would make me hesitant. Is the negative history of the automatic transmissions Nissan uses.
The only Nissan product I ever owned, was a 1993 Sentra, manual transmission. I purchased it new.
I kept the vehicle clean and it always looked new. But after about seven or eight years, the undercarriage rusted very badly. And parts of the body started to rust.
Hopefully things have improved with them since then lol.

That is the old school CVT in 2007. I own a 2007 Nissan Sentra with CVT and back then it is very rubber band. In 2020 I own a 2020 Nissan Versa SV and it its totally different. A lot of improvement since then so don't be scare from other people who only heard of the CVT problem. Honda, Toyota, Hyundai , Subaru all have CVT in their cars nowadays. This car is best bang for the bucks.

I have a 2023 manual, and I've enjoyed it so far. I do wish it had a six speed or that the gear ratio was stretched a little more. Also the body panels are very flimsy, but that's how it is with most new cars. Other than those tiny gripes it's a joy to drive.
Also I havent noticed the issue with hitting bumps mentioned in this video, the ride on mine is very nice but I've got the 15 inch wheels with lots of rubber on the tires so maybe I'm just not noticing something he's picking up on.
My dad has the 2017 versa manual and the only thing we both agree it that we wish was different was that it either had a sixth gear or higher fifth like you said. We did a lot of 1000 mile+ road trips when I was in high school and the car would be at 4k+ rpms when doing 80 or above on the highway. Fuel economy when going over 70-75 also starts to decline drastically.

Nissan products are much better than most people think. My wife’s Altima and my Frontier are both at the 150k mark and neither has ever required more than routine maintenance. Of course we live in the South, drive a lot of highway miles and take care of both vehicles.
The auto parts store I work for has a few older nissans with the 1.6L engine. I think they added the extra injectors to make it fire smoother, because they tended to be a little rough upon light acceleration, almost as if it was bogging down slightly in my experience. This probably fixes that flaw.
Actually shim & bucket is preferred in early high reving motorcycle engines for its compact and direct valve actuation. In a low powered low reving motor like this will never need adjustment.

I was considering buying a manual 2024 Versa but then I read the comments here and discovered the "limp mode" problem after the engine stalls by releasing the clutch too quickly and after an internet search on this problem I decided against it . Buying a 2024 Versa is too risky as there have been many cases of "limp mode" and some very risky ones on the roads. Good review anyway.
The 2023 model had a 6.8-inch ground clearance the 2024 has a 5-inch ground clearance and there is something wrong that's limping in this car I thought it was a forward collision feature when I made a sharp turn I lost power and I thought I was having a transmission problem
I've had many Nissan's over the years.. Never had any problems. Actually they have been great cars. Also never have had any rattles or squeaks on the interior.
I have a 21 year old vibe that started to act like it was about to explode at idle. It just stopped turning over on first try and then completely died on me in a parking lot. I was so pissed, and started looking at new cars. Versa manual was on the list. Instead, I did some research, bought a new battery, starter, and intake manifold gasket and spent a day working on my vibe. Now, it fires up no problem, sounds great, and accelerates like a little old sports hatch.
Went and spent $9 at a car wash and swept out the inside. All told, my little $1,400 beater took about $250 worth of maintenance and a day of my time and now feels like a new car. I am so happy I decided to do that rather than go spend $20,000 on a new, "cheap," car.
I have been living the Vibe dream for over 18 years with a total of 3 non-scheduled repairs. The Pontiac Vibe may be the red-headed stepchild of the Toyota family but the mere thought of switching to a Nissan Versa gives me hives.

I own a 22 Versa SR. It has been great. Getting ready to service the CVT at 25k miles. Totally love the way it drives.
i would take Nissan versa over Mercedes-Benz or BMW

The trouble that I found with the options is that you can rarely find a Versa on stock that hasn't been overfilled by the dealer with useless options... just to jack up the price. It makes it hard to find the car configuration and color that you want.
Eve n so... I find it to be the ideal car for 2024, when EVs aren't quite worth buying from a purely financial perspective and yet you don't want to risk investing a lot of money on a bigger gasoline car as gas prices are likely to go up over time.
You bring up a good/funny point about the headliner that I can relate to. I used to own a 2009 Toyota RAV4 V6 Limited. I bought it fully loaded with optional perforated leather seats. It was above and beyond what I expected in a RAV4 😊. Then the headliner. It felt like one-grade above cardboard 😂.
I think as basic transportation, the Versa seems like a good car. CVT is questionable, but we’ll find out 5 years from now if things have gotten much better.
Change the CVT oil every 25,000 miles and it will last.
Change oil every 25,000??? How does that extend the life of the cvt???

@@henry12397 There's oil in the CVT and it breaks down. Change the CVT oil. Engine oil 3000 to 5000 mile changes.
My cheap Hyundai has 435,000 miles and nothing major has needed repair. A couple fuel pumps, new radiator, alternator and the power steering is on it's way out. Engine and auto trans are fine. I have always done regular trans oil changes. People tend to ignore their trans until it acts up, then it's too late.
What a beautiful little car. It's a real shame that the other manufacturers have abandoned the budget market.

My wife's 2012 has been great. Same basic reliability of my toyotas. The really important thing to know however, is that it has the 1.8 and 4 speed AUTO NOT the cvt. I would never get the cvt. My 2018 Frontier has been good so far too.
I have the 2017 with the cvt. If you change the fluid every 30k miles it'll be fine. Sitting at 133k miles at the moment.
Don’t even mention Toyota and Nissan reliability in the same sentence. Nissans are trash
My Avalon is a great car, but it's actually needed more repairs than either of our nissans. Avalon and versa are both 140k plus. My real world experience says otherwise IF you buy the right models with the right drive train combos. Rash, blanketed statements don't mean anything to me.
nissan trucks are strangely solid. the car reputation hurts their truck sales, which keeps their price down. they can't do better than the American models at towing, but general truck use they're solid

You just sound like another sheep blabbing about toyota because you heard everyone else say it and you're desperate to feel like you were invited to the party. Toyotas have had their issues too, and they've been price gouging more than anyone for several years now because clowns follow clowns. Look at how many Nissan hardbody's from the 90s are still running around. I don't see a fraction of the same toyotas from those years. The Frontier has been and still is a better truck than a Tacoma, for many reasons. You just have to get it in a manual. But you sound like someone who thinks they're super cool with trucks, yet probably doesn't know how to drive a manual, or maybe it hurts your pretty hands too much. And even though you can't get a Frontier in manual anymore, I'd still take it in auto any day of the week over this 4cyl turbo overrated junk Tacoma. For this Versa with the manual, it's a solid simple car and a great price that will hang just as good if not better than any corrolla, and especially any other common junk like kia or hyandai etc. You could nearly buy two of these manual Versas over the lowest Corolla.....being that Toyota doesn't even offer a simple Eco car in this range anymore. Because they think they're too good for that now, because too many clowns kept overpaying for their stuff and Egos are full. You just have to understand some basics and not be completely stupid with vehicle choices. Or you can just overpay for a toyota and fool yourself into thinking that you have something that somehow lightyears ahead of anything else. I love Toyotas, but man oh man am I getting tired of all the clueless fanboys making it an embarrassment.
I love a simple car, devoid of complex technologies that are not of much benefit, except that the company makes a lot of money from selling spare parts, and the only one harmed is the consumer no hybrids no turbo no electric parking brake just simple car as the old strong cars

I've always had a little respect for these. The 1st Gen especially, the 2nd not so much. If there was a hatchback version of this 3rd Gen, I'd consider it. It's refreshingly no-b.s. A lot of cheap cars have a bad reputation, but I think lots of times that's because they are driven hard and not well-maintained. I have a 2010 Focus- timing chain, port injection, old-school 4AT tranny. Lots of hard plastic, but it's all easy to clean and take care of. For a 14 year old car, it's holding up and still looks good. Having a cheap reliable car is actually liberating, and I don't care one bit what other people think about me. I like this way better than a Corolla frankly.

Drove a Versa rental a few years ago. Surprisingly good...for a economy car

Sadly they removed these courses in our high school. Also drivers education and other wood and metal courses.
Absolutely love the rear drums / mechanical parking break combo, lightest weight and most mechanically simple system you can have which works perfectly
Rear brakes only provide about 25-30% of total braking force and therefore drum brakes are adequate and last a long time before brake shoe replacement is needed like maybe 100K miles or more.
Nice analysis of the cheap car. I own a 2020 Versa and I love it. I bought it for my wife after I bought my 2019 Maxima. My wife won't drive such a 'big' car. The Max is a great car. I've had 9 of them. The Versa is such a satisfying car to buzz around in. Nissan loaded with driving aides my Max has. The Max is in the garage. I do drive it around so it doesn't feel neglected. With the market today, the Nissan Versa is a smart buy. Thanks for your expert review.
Your videos and inspections help lot of car owners. The only suggestion I can make is that since you're kind of doing indepth reviews mechanically, I would like to see that in the end of your review you should summarize that if it's your money and you have to buy a car in this price range in this segment which one would you buy and also sometimes may be a generous suggestion that probably for another 1000 dollars or 2000 dollars more if you can afford nissan kicks or hyundai venue.
