I had a base Versa recently as a long term rental. I was pleasantly surprised! Very comfortable, not too low to the ground and had everything you need and nothing you don’t. Very easy to drive. It helped me decide I wanted a sedan instead of the SUV’s I’d been driving. Great content, as always.

For Vehicle safety, most people overlook the fact that the most survivable accident, is one that you avoid in the first place. A good, well trained driver in a 5-speed Versa is MUCH safer than a mediocre driver in a large SUV, as the smaller car handles better, and carries less mass to have to stop. It's a shame that in America, the trend is that the worse of a driver you are, the larger the vehicle you buy. That makes it less safe for everyone else on the road.

If we look at rising prices, most manufacturers offer nothing under 27,000$Can, Dodge/Chrysler is 45,000$can, Ford it's the Maverick at 35,000$can.

@@Motormouth... The Versa should cost less, or remove it completely and add a new Micra to the lineup.
I get that the Sentra is better for 3,000$ more, but for many the price of the Versa is already a lot to invest into a new car. I got my Spark because it was 15,000$ for a LT1 and didn't want to pay more. At that time there were a few brand new Sonic RS and Cruise Hatchbacks on the lot, they were more car than the Spark but they were also more expensive.
We need low price cars on the market, it's important to offer something for everyone. Right now we have electric vehicles that are for the wealthy, SUVs because people think they are safer or cooler in the eyes of others but small cars are dying.

Thank you for the honest review. In America the base S manual version is under $17K. But most buyers here will want the CVT. Only way to get that in America is to go up to the SV trim. Making it a barely under $20K purchase. I'm sorry but very few people are going to *want* a Versa. This is what you buy when you are on a very tight budget, you don't want to buy used, but you literally NEED a car for getting to and from work. Or, to and from college.
Advantages: Three biggest ones are the price (literally the cheapest new car you can buy in America). And, the outside styling is very good. When you're walking up to it, you don't feel depressed. Also, the fuel economy is excellent.
Disadvantages: It's slow! Sometimes commuter vehicles end up on the expressway. Hopefully the entrance ramp you use immediately transitions into the right-most lane on the expressway. If not, and you need to switch lanes in order to merge, you're going to be white-knuckling it down that entrance ramp. But, it is faster than an equivalent Mitsubishi Mirage. (Though that's not saying much.) Also, Jatco CVT transmission. It just doesn't have a reputation for reliability. Get it flushed once every 20K or 25K miles so it'll last you until at least 100K miles. Otherwise.... Keep in mind that CVTs on average cost twice as much to repair as traditional automatic transmissions do. Realistically, if you're buying a Versa; that's not a repair bill you can afford.

Not true for grown adults. It is not a cruiser for sure, but I purchased one because it fits comfortably into my garage, gets good gas mileage and keeps me from speeding around. I can't, even when I want to.Not a problem because this is my around town commuter vehicle. Friends are impressed.

Hey, money is tight for a lot of us. Grown adults are going to drive around in something better, if they can afford it. Not speeding has more to do with discipline, rather than intentionally driving around in a slow car. Also, as mentioned above, there are going to be times you're going to need power underneath that engine. (Merging onto expressway traffic without getting run over by faster vehicles.) Numerous vehicles out there that are the same size as a Versa. So fitting in your garage is far from a great reason for buying one.

The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is looking into reports of power loss in Nissan Versa vehicles with manual transmissions. Owners have reported instances where their cars stall and go into limp mode, resulting in limited torque and an inability to maintain speed or accelerate above 30mph. These incidents have occurred both on highways and in city traffic.
Owner complaints suggest that the power loss occurs when the clutch is released too quickly or for other reasons. Once the car goes into limp mode, a restart is required to reset the computer and restore normal function.

      WHICH MODELS ARE AFFECTED?

I know everybody is going SUV, but I am still convinced there is a market for this type of vehicle, even if it's sadly shrinking fast. A small car is still cheaper to run than a small SUV. It's funny you talked about the Dodge Colt. I have good memories of that car. A good friend of mine had the GT version with the turbocharged engine (105HP). It was fast for its day, and the handling was decent, thanks to low-profile tires and biffed-up suspension.

About the big car/ small car crash safety thing. It's entirely possible to build a safe small car, it's just that the industry didn't for so many years. If you dig through the IIHS fatality statistics, subcompact cars like the Ford Fiesta, the Mitsubishi Mirage, the Kia Rio... yes those cars did have high fatality ratings but they were also more likely to have been driven by first time buyers. But to dive into the data even more, all of those cars were old platforms for their test years, they simply didn't get the newest and best chassis designs, and as we've seen a car like the Impreza can go through top pick in 2017 to bottom of the pack in 2022 when the test standard went up. Basically, as I've been saying all along, small cars can be great, you just have to build them that way. Just going up in size from the IIHS data in the past decade, the Golf/Civic sized cars tended to do much better, the size difference isn't that much bigger but the chassis were kept up to date because those were more important market segments.
So that goes to Andrea's commenter about their Honda Fit paying more for insurance. That was a mostly up to date platform when we still had it, and had a really strong chassis for its size, but the problem is that a really good 2600lb chassis from 2016 is no match against a 4,000lb Tesla Model 3 or a 4300lb F-150. We're ruining safety for everybody because everything on the road is so heavy now.

Anyway, I am glad Nissan is still bringing cars like these here. At this price range a couple thousand bucks would make a big difference in affordability, so I disagree with Zack that one should stretch for the Sentra. (if everyone thought/did the same, then this bottom rung of cars will disappear!!). Also, I don't know why this car misses out on the rear armrest. It is super handy, especially with built-in cupholders. I'd take that over a heated steering wheel or wireless charging, etc. Thanks also for the fond memories of the Colt - I had a non turbo automatic, then a turbo manual - both were great, solidly built cars. Partly due to that review I bought one for my wife; the top trim (but without the moonroof despite my recommendation). She has loved that vehicle and drives it to this very day! It now has 140 thousand KMs but I cannot get her to give it up for anything new. If the 2024 came in a hatch she might be interested in going to the Nissan store for a test drive. Nissan looked like I was trying to cause trouble when I wanted to take a look at the Versa - Sentra middle model (I said - I would buy that one sitting right beside his darn desk) and they said no no we have the top model in the back in like an bright orange only $20 more (how many times did I have to say to them to talk to me on pricing in terms of payment) - ah, you guys busted my budget and you are not listening to me. Got my '21 Elantra Preferred by total surprise on a last ditch outreach for pretty darn close to the Versa price anyway (back then - yes rebates, dealer matched them, and so on).

Safety rating is based on the cars of that class. So a 5/5 rating for small car is less safe than a 5/5 for a larger and heavier car if they were to collide with each other.

i keep seeing some Versa SRs on YT with Foglights, but my 23 SR didn't come with any. i know the 2022s did. so did they kill them off for the 2023s, now bringing them back for the 24s?

Great review. I've been looking for this vehicle on a lot since last year. I'm in the GTA. Doesn't exist. I think Nissan made 4 for all of Canada. Have seen a few (very few) 24s. It's basically an order it vehicle if you want one. Now the Sentra on the other hand are everywhere especially compared to the Elantra which in the base model Essential is very hard to find. Shopping for a new car now if indeed you want a CAR like me and not a house on wheels is HELL.

This car would have outrun about 75% of the cars in the student parking lot when I started driving in high school in 1963. Since then cars have gotten faster but the speed limits are the same and traffic is much heavier so you aren't going to get where you're going any sooner in a more expensive car. You will just burn a lot more gas.

The investigation covers Nissan Versa vehicles from the model years 2022 to 2024. Specifically, it focuses on those with manual transmissions. Versa models with automatic transmissions are omitted.

You talked about the Sentra being a few thousand more and having more equipment, so it would be worth the financial stretch. It may also be that at trade in time in a few years, the Sentra could be worth more. Budget cars tend to lose a higher percentage of value.

There is a market for this size and priced car. Manufacturers have gotten greedy and want to sell the high profit SUVs. This is the last small car out there. The average cost of a new car is almost 50K. Rarely do dealers care the base models of these cars in stock, because they want to sell the more expensive models
Gone are the Spark and the Mirage. This is the last affordable car in America.
I pray that Nissan does not cancel the Versa.
