    russ understands corax's decision to not remain on terra and instead hunt down the traitors to waste as much of their force as they can before they reach terra in order to weaken them. its a similar decision he took with the wolves.

      Yeah if the Raven Guard went to Terra to act as basic front line troops like Dorn wanted then they probably would have been wiped out completely; they are stealth experts, so to send them to stand on a wall firing their bolters at waves of oncoming troops is a waste of their talents when they would be much better suited by harassing the enemy's rear guard to distract their attention (meaning the traitors would need to take forces from the front to counter these attacks), and also interrupting their supply lines to "starve" them out of the siege and force them to give it up early from a lack of food, equipment, and reinforcements

      @@sorufa888 It seemed to go well with Lorgar, for what it's worth.
      Problem with Primarchs is not many of the 20 semi warp gods trapped in meat socks actually had much brotherly feelings in them. Kind of speaks volumes really that one of the few that tried actually was Russ.
      What a nutty family.

    • @thesyndrome43
      @thesyndrome43 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Russ likes to play the role of the buffoon and the boisterous barbarian king when things are going well, because it makes people drop their guard around him both for good and ill (on the one hand he can find out which of his brothers have a sense of humour and develop a kinship with them, on the other the less loyal people might end up revealing something to him thinking he's too stupid to pick up on it) but it's been mentioned time and time again that certain people see through this ruse and can tell that he's putting on an act to test people.
      The heresy was really interesting as a Space Wolf fan, because we see Leman get more and more serious as time goes on, he still has jokes and a certain countenance to him, but the facade of "the barbarian king" was slipping, and you see him be much more measured and serious, even in Wolfsbane when he is explaining to Malcador why he is choosing to take his legion on the attack rather than defending Terra, he made a very quiet and meticulous argument about his reasoning, never giving into emotion or being so consumed by anger that he is doing a pointless suicide run like Angron would do, but instead saying that his legion works better by attacking than defending, and if he CAN deal a lethal strike to Horus before he reaches Terra then he will save the planet before the invasion even reaches it, which I think are both fair points

      It outlines that the Lion and Russ had reconciled, that they respected and appreciated each other and that the Lion gave him gifts.
      Russ and the Lion, according to the lore, developed a solid regard for one another.
      When it was thought that the Lion was dead, Russ wore sack cloth and ashes and removed himself to the deeps below the Fang to mourn, forsaking his sons for a time.
      That's not the reaction of somebody that does not appreciate the other.

    I can’t believe it- Corax finally getting some attention from GW! He’s such an awesome character with a great backstory and shining record of kicking ass. I chose to make my Raven Guard Legion for 30K about 5-6 years ago and I’ve never regretted that choice. Corax and the XIXth came to the aid of Russ and his Wolves before, and they have never wavered in their loyalty. Thanks for covering this lore update, you’re the first person I’ve heard do so. I stopped buying every White Dwarf around when Covid started, but I’m planning on buying this new one. Can someone tell me which month’s issue it is?

    So Corax/RG are badass, but for very different reasons than Dorn. Probably why they haven’t stood out to valrak. Dorn is all about big last stands, defenses, and major crusades. Cool stuff, but fundamentally different than raven guard, who are more about tactical withdrawals rather than holding the ground. They like to infiltrate and assassinate rather than crusade. So you wont find last wall protocol equivalent stories.
    But a sniper headshotting Horus, the gutting of Lorgar in probably the most one sided primarch fight ever, evading and surviving on Istivaan of all places when the iron hands and salamanders got completely slaughtered out of the gate, actually scaring nightlords.. These are the types of things that make them cool.
    Much like the White Scars, their actions delayed the Horus Heresy to buy time for Dorn to fortify terra. Its not glorious work, but it was essential. There’s cool examples of Corax being the consummate good guy. Saving populations from tyrants not because of strategy, but because someone needed to stand up for the well-being of common people, even if there remains bigger threats and needs. He was looking out to protect the values of humanity. The salamanders get the rep for being good guys, but Corax really was a champion for quality of life for people.
    So, excluding Istivaan, you dont get many large scale engagements. But you do get a lot of moments where small groups or individuals punch above their weight class and have major impact.

    • @hammer1349
      @hammer1349 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even on istvaan some of the stuff he does on there is insane. Besides the lorgar fight, he just casually lands on an Iron Warriors predator, sending the back into the air and causing the one behind to crash into it before tearing its turret clean off.
      Outside of that, his ability to rally and unify broken and scattered remnants of imperial forces, single astartes ships or battered battle groups, earn their respect and fashion them into a fighting force that would prove costly to the traitors is pretty much unmatched. He even convinced an Imperial Fists ship captain to act as bait to lure away the escorts of a convoy while other raven guard ships slipped in with the stealth shields and tore the convoy apart. Raven Guard fanboy here (I apologize, this is gonna get long).. I grant you, I think the 19th don’t have as many cool scenes as many of the other legions… in a conventional,
    widely-seen-as-awesome massed military operational sense anyway. But the one scene that I immediately thought of when our brother Fist made his claim was their three-month long fighting retreat at Istavaan.
    Being able to pull of any kind of retreat with minimal loss of life in a war zone so totally under your enemies control, in the face of overwhelming numbers is insane. Most would probably call it impossible, but clearly the intel possessed by the enemy was such that they didn’t think Corax could still be active as a commander, much less leading thousands of men away from the Urgall Depression, otherwise they’d have gunshipped/otherwise used their resources to outmaneuver and obliterate the CRAP out of them.
    As horrible as the massacre was, it demonstrates in many ways why the Raven Guard and Corax are, in my opinion the coolest legion. Corax, unlike rage-blind Manus, performs as a leader of men should in such a situation (7 to 3 and utterly at the enemies mercy are not winnable odds however you slice it). He immediately calls a retreat, nearly kills Lorgar (a man arguably responsible for the whole damn betrayal in the first place), gathers together THOUSANDS and either drills out of or slips away from what was effectively a cage formed by the most elite fighting force the galaxy had ever seen, who had overwhelming numbers and military resources on them, thereby saving countless lives, the future of his legion, and arguably the Iron Hands and Salamanders too as the RG guerrilla tactics would be instrumental to their survival in the coming years.
    Not only that, he manages to survive, on the move, for THREE MONTHS. Not giving up, not making a last stand as Ferrus did immediately, but saving lives, holding out. And though the writing on it is brief, If that isn’t cool, I don’t know what is. I don’t think there is a single other primarch that could have accomplished that.

      Although what I have read and made them my favorite Legion has been Deliverance Lost for Corax.
      Corax has quite a few short stories, so that book/audio is fantastic contains deliverance lost as well.
      He scares nightlords in one story.
      Sneaks up on some tech priests and uses his Primarch reputation to bring them to heel.
      Rams a flying city into another one with the tech boys help.
      Fights some traitors as well as traitor Ravens.
      Takes out two Interceptors with just his claws at supersonic speeds.
      The famous reflex shields as well as other stealth related tech is the chefs kiss
      The last one is by far the best "weregeld" if your going to listen or read anything that's the one.
      I won't spoil it, but it's one of my favorite 30k moments.
      Oh yeah, the "assault" on the perfect fortress.
      A classic Ravenguard move against Emperor's Children, made my a handful of Ravens supported by auxiliary troops take a fortress city in the most 007 way possible.
      Corax seeing Russ broken and dying in a cave as his son's desperately defend him to the last on a forgotten moon... Such a good scene.

He is the shadowed blade, the unseen and so it makes sense that the Lion wouldn't see what he has done. The fact that he granted the Dark Angels and Space Wolves the some of the scant resources he has access to, given how heavily guarded the technology and forges are, even from the adeptus mechanicus should be a sign he will support them. Personally, I'd like the see how the lion would react if he tried to fight the way he does with only a scant few thousand marines rather than tens of thousands he normally would.

      @@Sigismund697 yep. the Lion's upbringing in a chaos spawn infested jungle, for years before Luther and the Knights of Caliban found him gave him a borderline autistic personality. He is loyal, and dedicated to the extreme, and underneath everything, he means well, but the Lion cannot really read or understand people, and doesn't understand how his actions and words can be taken, or how the actions of others can be due to duress etc. He is essentially a very, VERY high functioning Savant. Exceptional at many things, including warfare, strategy and personal combat, but when it comes to people, he cannot compute fully, at least in emotional terms, and when he believes something needs done for the greater needs of the Imperium, then he will do it, no matter what it takes or the cost; as long as the outcome is more important.

      when he sent Luther away he relied on Nemiel for a while to conduct the let's say, the human resources part of the management of the legion but once he killed him and Corswain took his place it was clear Corswain was more in line with his "do what I say" mentality so there was no one left to try to wrangle the Lion into more productive endeavors

      @@Sigismund697 Yes I suspect his original design was indeed to be the Emperor's Warmaster. He was a strategic genius, and master combatant; essentially what Guilliman is to logistics, Lion El'Johnson is to warfare. Unfortunately when the Primarchs got scattered and he landed on Caliban, and had to grow up there for decades in the wilderness alone, he was robbed of some of the underlying emotional intelligence and personality traits such a person would require to hold everything together, and instead Horus became the fallback option due to his charisma and all round capability.
      The Imperium would have been a very different entity if a Lion El'Johnson with all his skills, and without the hit to his emotional intelligence and personal skills had come forwards. He was deathly loyal, so would have been almost impossible to bring to Chaos.

    Dude Lion gets worse the more I learn about him. Screwing the Fists on Cthonia and Inwit, giving siege weapons to Perturabo, wanting to nuke Macragge, I’m surprised only half his legion turned. They probably looked at what Lion was doing and went “oh I guess we’re on the Warmaster’s side”
    Lion says “loyalty is it’s own reward” but I think he’s empty handed.

    • @Sigismund697
      @Sigismund697 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Lion considers loyalty as complete blind one
      he gave the weapons to Perturabo because he didn't know he was a traitor at the time
      he wanted to nuke Macragge if that was the most efficient way of killing Curze who had been running circles around him and Guilliman for years
      and the half that turned did so because they either believed in Luther, believed only on the Emperor or believed Lion but not the Emperor or Luther
      And what's worse, most of betrayal was simply because the instant Lion couldn't not trust Luther 100% he was a liability even if he did turn off the nuke at the last minute and was the closest to an equal he had on Caliban

    Concept of RG is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe´s poem The Raven. Most of his work has themes of horror, despair, sadness and depression. Therefore the authors have chosen the Raven Guard to be one of the legions to be decimated at Isstvan III as it was a natural fit to emphasize the sensation of mourning and loss. Putting Corax into the role of a 80s action hero kicking a$$ 24/7 is counterproductive to this idea. So he naturally lurks in the shadows and lets his more gung-ho brothers take the limelight.

The "cool" factor of this meeting could have been anticipated instead of appropriated. I, personally, find it quite hard to get excited about the scene, the characterisation included and its implications when I can't reconcile it being anything beyond a hamfisted, ill-considered marketing ploy.
