I’m with you - I started out with an Apple Watch in late 2017, and then tried a Garmin Fenix 6 in 2019…. Garmin Fenix 7 in 2022, etc. I really haven’t looked back since then, although I did try the Apple Watch Ultra for a bit. I’m getting the Garmin Fenix 8 Sapphire Solar (51 mm) in a couple of days - so excited! (Oh yeah, and the flashlight function on any Garmin Fenix is so very handy.)
Same here. I went from Apple Watch 3 to 4 to 6 and then I got tiered of all the charging so now I am using an 51mm Epix Pro Gen2. I am deep into Garmin now with Edge 1040 on my bike, HRM-Pro Plus, Index S2 and Index BPM.
If your apple watch is cellular - just do what i do and take the AW as a 1"inch phone for emergencies while still using the garmin for actual tracking. I wear my garmin 24/7 (and have for years) Recently got the fenix 8 also, but slip an apple watch on the other wrist or in a pocket for the ease of cellular data. Prefer that than taking a phone around my distance runs. This also allows me to stream music from apple music rather than creating playlists on the the fenix. I know that adds cost but in all honesty, if your already spending around a grand on the garmin then the cheapest apple watch cellular (SE model) isnt going to hurt much - and is an option to consider for people who already own an apple watch and are tempted by the night and day difference with a garmin if they are moving into more serious training.
WOW! I've said many of the same things! I have a Garmin Fenix 7. It just works. I've played with the Apple Watch, and I have said "it feels like a toy". The Garmin feels like a tool. I'm not a professional athlete by any means, but the Gamin has 30+ features that the AWU does not have. From a fellow Hoosier, I wish you the best at the race in Indy!
Thanks, I appreciate it training hard :) Thanks for the comment, looking forward to running through Indy been a long time since I have been down there. Went to Purdue, graduated from Ball State HAHA
If you do your long runs or sprints with music or podcasts or audiobooks, etc., with your phone connected and ear buds, or earbuds connected only to the watch via BT, if you go to focus modes - activity - voice alerts - audio output, you can program your splits and it’ll call your splits out or heart rate zones, or actual heat rate verbally at your choice of interval like time, heart rate, etc. This way you can control your pace or heart rate better and speed up, slow down, etc. Then when your done you can analyze the data on GC, Stava etc. A lot of comments say the watch has a high learning curve. I thought so too. I’ve been on the Fenix since the 3. If you wear it and train with it regularly, you’ll be good with it in about 2 weeks.
I was exactly the same using a Apple ultra loved it lost a bunch of weight and then became obsessed with running and the ultra was just annoying to use so I got a Garmin fenix 7 pro sapphire solar and absolutely love it it’s leaps ahead of the ultra in every aspect I have had it 5 months so far so and fully garmin now and also going to get hrm pro plus to work with the fenix as I also do a lot of heart rate training for a ultra marathon next may, I completely understand why you are fully Garmin now, it just makes sense 👏🏻 good luck on getting into the Boston marathon amazing work at your age aswell. Just subbed All the best 🏃🏼♂️
Thanks, brother you know it’s weird because there’s tons of tech where you can just get into all the specs and stuff and I’m just trying to get into the cases where I use it if that makes sense. So trying to be a little different but just it makes it easier on the editing process and everything. The only problem is that it tends to be my opinion but I’m open to discussion that’s for sure. I appreciate the comment.

If I was doing the level of fitness you’re doing I’d be looking at the Garmin as well. But I do find that the Ultra 2 with the built in workouts is good enough for me at the moment. You can use the action button on the Ultra 2 to marks laps as well when running.
I would agree - as I say everything is about use case, for me and this is hard core right now I need the functionality of the Garmin- thanks for the comment :)
For what lap recording shit doesn't work for me in the rain. Shoot me a video if you don't mind and send it over - that would rock. If you can on your speed day on the track in the rain. Just want to see it work. Thanks
I wanted to switch to Fenix 7 pro. Two questions. 1 How can you pick which notifications appear on the watch when using an iPhone? When strength training, how can you track sets and reps of the exercises? The Garmin workout feature is a nightmare. You have to follow the workout from A to Z. What if certain machine is taken and you want to do a different set instead. It seems that tasks that take seconds to do on the Apple Watch, are impossible on the garmin. Someone proof me wrong as I really wanted to like the Garmin watch after the countless reviews I watched.
I don’t take my Phone with me if I’m out on a run, it’s too clunky. I also don’t want to be disturbed. I do take my phone with me when I go to the gym and sometimes check things out in between sets. Turn on the touchscreen mate, using both of them just make for a more seamless experience. Also professional athletes workout 8 to 10 hours per day, not 4 and that’s why their skill level is so high. I work out about 4 hours per day, run 100 km per week and I do not have the speed of professionals but I know if I was to work out full-time I could do what they do. But it just won’t happen on a part time schedule, I can assure you that. Kipchoge works out 10 hours a day and runs 200+ km per week. That should give you some perspective .Yes, the Garmin eight is fantastic and I love it, but it does have some lagging issues. I’ve been a Garmin user for six years. The Apple Watch ultra is not an ultra for athletes but an ultra watch for the everyday person. I have both but almost never use the ultra and it just sits in a drawer. Why would I need an ultra watch if I have my phone on me?

@@morningcoach I’m hoping you will be posting some more videos as you continue your journey over to garmin. I had a garmin about 6 years ago and actually quite liked it. Only a mid range model at the time. I then also switched from android to iOS for the iPhone XS. I found the notifications on the garmin to be very annoying as I lost the granular control over what apps do and don’t notify on the watch. Eventually swapped to the AW series 4 which stopped the feeling of a miniature massage gun on my wrist every day. But I’ve missed the battery life and detail offered by garmin. So many pros and cons to both ecosystems.

I just crossed over from Apple to Fenix 7 Pro. Night and day difference. I realized that I didn't use any of the apple apps, nor the smart watch features. I have learned so much about my body and health over the past week since wearing it. Also, 30 hours of battery in 2024 is simply unacceptable. Be better Apple.
I received my Garmin Fenix 8 on Tuesday and spent most of the night watching DC Rainmakers hour long intro, then I spent last night downloading AWESOME watch faces and customizing the data screens. Wednesday, I was like, this is way too complicated - today, I'm like - Ebay, look for a nearly new Ultra 2, cuz the Ultra 2 can't give me realtime 24/7 heart rate, respiratory rates, HRV% - completely night and day. If the Fenix 8 had LTE - it would be EPIC!!! Its the only thing the Ultra 2 has over the Fenix 8. Just sayin :)
I am rolling with Whoop and Oura for a lot of "not training" Data, but get you... I need it primarly for training and have my Whoop, Oura and Phone for everything else so get it! :) Thanks for the comment!
I don't agree with you. I wore the Fenix 8 for three weeks and it was a nightmare with that thing. Screen too dark in the evening, laggy widgets, laggy watch faces, data on the watches are too small, allot of bugs, allot of crashes, big scratch on the casing after a week, app store from 1834, no TH-cam Music available, low speaker and hearing sound, disconnecting from bluetooth and the list goes on.. I bought the AWU2 and i don't have a single issue what so ever (NOT ONE). And noooo i'm not an isheep (as people are calling Apple enthusiasts..

The Fenix 8 is one of the worst releases from Garmin of late. I wouldn’t taint the entire brand because of it though. Prior watches are generally solid, including the Epix Pro last gen Fenix.
@@MrMichaelfalk i need a Watch that’s worth the money. That can track my health, cycling and walking without freezing, crashing or other errors/bugs. I paid 1200€ for the Fenix 8 for a horrible experience with the software. Just unacceptable.
@@morningcoach I’ll work in daylight so no time to train then and in the evening my screen went too dark to even see the data correctly on the screen. Garmin knows about this software issue but it takes till the end of the year to solve the issue. So I can’t use the watch fully in dark environments. Unacceptable for a 1200€ watch.
Sorry but what a bunch of crap. You didn’t even try using the Apple Watch. One single half marathon and you had problems with Runclub. For the rest it is “I dont know” After more than 600 run sessions with my Apple Watch: it works perfect. Strava and Stryd connectivity works flawless. The only problem is the battery running sesions over 5 hours on the normal Apple Watch but there comes Pro in. But really, this is no way to compare.
I’ve been using the Apple Watch since April - 40 miles a week It doesn’t work for me. That’s what’s great about tools. I’m glad you can make that work for you. I’m doing speed work and track work trying to qualify for Boston this year. We’re just running over five months so I need tools that are gonna help me do that. I was doing track work all day today and I have no idea how you’d use the Apple Watch with track work and speed work. I honestly don’t mind opposite opinions but for me it’s just not a training tool. There’s too many moving parts and I really like Garmin data and I just got the Garmin chest strap which is really added to my training. Now we’ll see if I can break that 320 with my first marathon … looking good right now feeling good putting in tons of miles and body is just working right now so I think 7:40 is looking good especially in Indy because it’s flat… I’m on Strava too thanks for the comment. I don’t mind the opposite stuff. I honestly don’t. It’s just not crap. 👊🏼👊🏼🏃♂️🏃♂️🤣 if I don’t qualify for Boston, that’s crap🙌🏻🙌🏻
@@morningcoach I ran a marathon last sunday, you can find me on Strava. Love to meet up but cant afford it. But really, this isnt a fair comparison. As a techuser from the early 80ies I know my hard- and software shit.
Hey bro, I’m 55 too so I get it but it just wasn’t a tool for me. Apologize for getting a little snappy, but I didn’t like u saying it was crap lol Now here’s a deal let’s see if I can qualify for Boston in my first marathon next month. It’s looking really good and honestly, I just want a tool that can help me do that. Apple Watch wouldn’t get it done today’s work. I was running pretty hard-core lapse and trying to keep my speed down. I’m working on a sub 20 5K obviously around 19 minutes. And then I’m working on a sub 320 marathon which is pretty doable in Indy at least right now. We’ll see see if my body can hold up. I’m doing all the right things. Thanks, Jim. I’ve had no bugs yet. Just FYI, but I’m not using the workouts just straight up watch usage, but I haven’t had any bugs at all
@@morningcoach I’m hoping you will be posting some more videos as you continue your journey over to garmin.
@@jimhayward3560 Hey Jim thanks I am starting a specific running - ie Vlog here so I can keep this channel tech. I do a lot of tablet and e-ink reviews, though TH-cam has liked my Garmin videos and is pushing them which is great. Here is my running channel so you have it - - www.youtube.com/@JB-Glossinger
Apple is ridiculous. Max 2 days of operation. They live in the past. Garmin is the future !😁
HHAHA I feel you - loving my Garmin rest day today - sucks LOL I need to run LMAO
Well, no LTE in 2024 is unacceptable too. Pick your poison.
At around $800, sure. $1000+ for an entry-level Fenix? Gonna pass.....
The Garmin really is made for serious and professional athletes.
No comparison, Garmin is far much better than Apple Watch
All good - how are u doing interval track running - just curious are u doing speed work? Just wonder timing and no lap button - thanks 👊🏼 I’m using it only as a training device - phone handles all music? Thanks
Just trying to understand use case? I don’t use any of those thing u use never even been in the App Store - tracking 50-60 miles a week and my 2/3 gym workouts 👊🏼
I love alternate comments if everyone agrees always worries me 👊🏼
The Fenix 8 is one of the worst releases from Garmin of late. I wouldn’t taint the entire brand because of it though.
Prior watches are generally solid, including the Epix Pro last gen Fenix.
sounds like you need a smarthwatch - not a training tool like a garmin. Apple is the right watch for you...
And Apple Watch looks ugly
the back-case on the Garmin is made of titanium - no nickel..
I think the nickel is in the charging port. Somebody was saying I’m just reporting what somebody said in the comments.
Any bugs?
I have not had any it is working great, I am not using workouts etc...
Sorry but what a bunch of crap. You didn’t even try using the Apple Watch. One single half marathon and you had problems with Runclub. For the rest it is “I dont know”
After more than 600 run sessions with my Apple Watch: it works perfect.
Apologize for getting a little snappy, but I didn’t like u saying it was crap lol
Now here’s a deal let’s see if I can qualify for Boston in my first marathon next month.
Appreciate the comments, man we can agree to disagree. I Apple products doesn’t work for me, especially as hard as I’m trading right now. If I don’t qualify for Boston, that’s crap if I don’t break at 3:30 my first marathon that’s crap. 👊🏼👊🏼🏃♂️🏃♂️🙏🏻
And for stats: I ran the last 12 months 2900km of which 35 half-marathons or longer. All with an Apple Watch in combination with Stryd.
I was snappy too with the crap stuff. Let’s talk running at Strava.
At around $800, sure. $1000+ for an entry-level Fenix? Gonna pass.....
Yeah, it would’ve been a little lighter on my wallet. Let me tell you happy with it but you’re paying for it.
