I grew up in Highland Park, northeast of LA, in the '80s and '90s. It's not always easy now to tell who's banging. These kids now kinda look like everyone else. Back in the day you could just glance at a fool and you knew exactly what was up. Shaved head. Ben Davis or Dickies pants, baggy and creased. Nike Cortez. White tshirt. Pendleton if it was cold out. I was in Westlake at a 7-11 a while back and there were three dudes inside. The just looked like three young kids until I got in line next to them and saw their tattoos. Maybe I'm just old and out of touch.

I was a Canadian kid living there. I was checked a few times.
I jumped a fence to play basketball and not even 5 minutes later I was approached.
Was asked who I was and where I was from. After telling them I was from another country and talking for a few minutes. They politely explained to me that I was not allowed there and asked me to leave. Many people had died at this playground. It was closed for a reason. They told me I was in danger.
I found out later I was in the middle of the most dangerous neighborhood in McFarland.
