- When you think of status symbols in society, a few things come to mind. Big houses, fancy cars, jewelry and yes...sneakers! Fashion in general has always been all about signaling to others who you are, what you stand for and for some, how much loot you got. In the 80s and 90s when a lot of these sneakers were first coming out, hustlers on block began to gravitate towards certain silhouettes based on their price tag. Well, not only price tag as some dope boys bought the sneakers for utility but it was mostly for the flex. To be fresh and turn heads in the neighborhood. In this video, we take a deep dive into the dope boy's sneaker closet over the years and discuss some of the most notorious sneakers of the streets. Enjoy! -Bryan

I’m from Baltimore and Growing up in 2000s and early 2010s Nike Foamposites were expensive and were so popular amongst drug dealers the whole city referred to them as “Dopes” and still do to this day.

You got it wrong. Those Adidas sneakers were a ball player sneaker. The song is La Di Da Di. The Bally shoe in the song referenced the rubber bottom Bally shoe not the sneaker. The Reebok Exo-Fit was a hustler dress sneaker yiu chilled out in. Pro-Keds Royales and 69ers were a NYC lifestyle basketball shoe that came out out decades before Gucci Tennis 84. Pro Keds were a 70s sneaker. AF-1 was a ball player shoe All that hustler stuff comes decades after
The Nike TNs are absolutely huge in german speaking countrys. These were already really popular but the influence of 187 (the guy in the TN car is one of them) pushed this shoe even further.

I am 56 years old now and in the 80 and 90s the Nike Cortez was known as a gangster shoe so much that they banned them in some high school in Los Angeles, if you wore them to school they sent you home. I was one of the guys they sent home from school and had to get a parent's note not to wear those shoes to school in order to come back lol.

I think Pro Keds are massively underrated. Compared to the regular converse they are much more comfortable. A little wider in the forefoot. Canvas thicker; just a better shoe. Also fila has some nice styles very classic.
That Slick Rick line referred to the Bally Classic shoe. Not the sneaker. Look at his red ones he’s wearing on his Great adventures of Slick Rick album cover. No one wore green socks with sneakers like they do today but we matched our socks with the Bally shoes because they came in a lot of colors. Sneakers weren’t the only thing we wore in the 80’s and 90’s in NY. Look at that pic around 5:40. We wore linen and silk dress shit with Ballys & Wallabees compared to DC. Ny did not wear track suits. We wore Lees jean jacket and pants. Something Run DMC emulated from them boys in the streets.
My mother and grandma grew up in a neighborhood near Watts that eventually became crip territory, and of course the shoe of choice in the neighborhood was the Nike Cortez. My grandma still lives there to this day and they have mad respect for her. The cholos still got on the Cortez' and the whole neighborhood know that I'm her grandson so they don't start beef with me 😂😂

100% accurate: the relevance of TNs in France is maybe the reason why TN are big in Italy too. Squalos (that's the TNs nickname here in Italy) were sported by the first generations of north African drugs dealers by the end of the 90's as heavily influenced by French rappers.

I'm from Liverpool in the UK and 95's have always been the most popular shoe by far especially the og neon colourway, we call them 110's here though because they retailed for £110 when they released in 95, if you go the next city over to Manchester they wear TN's instead

I'm from LA i took a trip to Atlanta for a work convention. Of course I wore my Cortez because that's the only tennis shoes I own. I went to a nightclub but they didn't want to let me in with the Cortez even though half the crowd had on tennis shoes. I was able to convince the bouncer to let me in by showing him my convention I.D. I didn't know they recognized Cortez in Atlanta.

I grew up in the DMV (I was born in DC in 71) & I have owned quite a few of the shoes he’s shown,I think any kid/young person who was a teenager in the 80’s in or near a big city sold some kind of drugs at some point....i could never get used to the violence necessary to be a successful dealer so stepped away after awhile....a few of my boys on the other hand did not & things didn’t turn out very well for a lot of them.....between the DMV & Baltimore it was almost like murder was legal back then....not much has changed except now there’s a lot more fire power on the streets & there are cameras EVERYWHERE

Lol They said all the Pushers from 1980 all the way to about 2005 in New York City would rock AF1 high mid or low, any Adidas Classic, Air Max 87s and 90s, Pro Keds or if you was really earning money, the Gucci Tennis or any Air Jordan 1 thru 14. Yo they even remembered during the peak of the crack era, like ‘87-‘90, Air Js flooded the streets. EVERYBODY was making money during them years! And then in ‘91 heroin took over and cocaine made a comeback. A lot of people were still earning, but the late 80s very early 90s ANYBODY WHO WAS ANYBODY was getting money. I love them stories man. What a time to be alive for real.

990s became popular in mid 90s. The 995s were the 1st and they were $100 in 89 but it was the 1300s that were the top dog shoe and costed $130 in DC

In the 80s everybody in the hood was into sneakers. We didn't consider ourselves to be "sneakerheads." It was just our culture. Everybody wore fly shoes because that was the culture. The only shoes that were strictly drug dealer shoes were the Gucci sneakers and Super-Tims. Most of the other shoes were a little expensive but still affordable if you or your parents had money. Drug dealer stuff was anything that cost more than $200 or $300. $300 in 1986 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $786.96 today. So drug dealer stuff was: Anything Gucci, Super-Tims, Triple Fat Goose Coats, Serac Coats, Eddie Bauer Coats, EK Glasses, Sergio Tacchini Tracksuits...etc. Drug Dealers wore the super expensive stuff. It's not accurate to say that everyone in the hood modeled their style after drug dealers. Drug dealers are just dudes that grew up in the same hood we did, going to the same schools. They weren't always the trendsetters.

I’m a District native. We were the front runners of street style in the late 80’s and early 90’s. We had a signature style and it all started from the hustlers. Madness Connection is the first street clothing line ever and it was a must to rock either Gucci, Fila, even New Balance with your Madness fit. You’re on point with your most of these picks. However I will say you missed one of the most significant shoes for hustlers ever - Jordan 3. 1988 was the height of the era and the Jordan3 was thee must have for status seekers.
In the UK Adidas gazelle also has gained a lot of notoriety as a go to shoe for the hooligans on the terraces and members of the firms

Cortez's are a great shoe. Comfy as fuck, last forever and damn near waterproof. A great shoe to go on a nature walk, go on a bike ride, or run from the cops.
I didn’t realise my collection was so bad but good at the same time. The TN here in Australia really is the pinnacle of up to no good shoe. For the price you just about have to rob someone to get a pair or just rob someone of there shoes. There is an article Australia’s most F$&koff shoe. And it goes into great detail around the stigma of the shoe.

I absolutely love this Channel but I feel the need to correct you on this, a lot of the sneakers on the list were just popular in the inner city overall. I would not call them “drug dealer “sneakers of choice. Please don’t confuse drug culture with inner city, black or hip-hop culture. A lot of those photos that you shared of people from the 80s are images Jamel Shabazz captured and mostly all of them are just neighborhood people, not drug dealers. A lot of the sneakers on the list were made popular by hip-hop, not drug dealers.

WRONG. People imitated the drug dealers, not the other way around. Hiphop / black / inner city culture has always started with the dope boys or pimps and trickled down the the everyday school kid. Not the reverse like you are implying. The fact that these figures are glorified in this culture is a whole other topic.

In Houston the air flights was a big hustler shoe when I was a kid. There were red, black, baby blue and white ones. I wanted some of those so bad lol. Actually got some when they were sold as retros!

Reminds me of this kid I knew in Gatlinburg TN that wore 3 sizes too big skater shoes (DC probably) and kept weighed out quarter bags of weed for quick sale in them while wearing. If you saw him in these shoes he was holding.

I remember the Dug E Fresh video with his Ballys sneakers shooting the Adidas in 85 ,Heavy D and the boys with the coco cola suits and their Diadoras 86 , KRS and Doug EFresh with Nikes in 88, Slick Rick with Bally shoes in 88, these were the big shoes in my hood in South Side Jamaica Queens in the 80s

In Detroit in the 80's the Adidas Top Tens and Forums were definitely the dopeboy shoes of choice. YBI, the biggest drug ring of that era made them part of their uniform. They're still popular and have almost a cult status there even today.

Man I know I'm late to the party but, I remember being in high school in 85/86 and the dope boy shoe was most diffidently the Gucci and Bally competition(also the Bally Ace). Both pairs were over $200. Also down here in New Orleans the Fila jogging suits were ok but the true dope boys had the Christan Dior Velour with the matching suede Bally boots. Man talk about ice cold ha ha ha. I was lucky enough to not be able to afford any of those(meaning it would have brought too much attention to me) and my mom would have beat the crap out of me if I had tried to sell dope LOL. I loved that style.

I remember (2005-6) that all the crack dealers in the midwest seemed to be rocking gray Jordans, but at that time, I (and a lot of dudes) also had the black forces. At my peak (2016) I definitely favored the Cortez or air maxs. I always stayed with some addidas in the closet too.

I went to high school in the 80's and I tried to be original in my dress. I used to wear diadora, Avia, and le coq sportif sneakers, but Lotto, Kangaroo, K-Swiss and the Reebok classic were stylish also.

On the subject of hood foot ware, I was wondering about the current trend of work boots from the Tim's, choice brand in that show The Wire, to Nike boots that I'm seeing more of. There's always a popular trend, boots being the current one, and that filters down to the hood and how the outlaw faction chooses their own version of it.
the timbs/nike boots thing in the eastcoast was probably born out of the same thing as the skinheads in london in the 60s adopting doc martens, working mans uniform that eventually became wider fashion.

What about post-early and mid 1990s? I feel like street wear took over the early/mid 2000s. Saw a lot of Jordan brand, Dunks, Bapesta, Ice Cream, Supra, AF1s, and Air Max 95s. 2010s were so varied. High fashion crept back in. YEEZY was launched. SB Dunks took a nose dive then found relevance by the end of the decade.
No one stands on the corner unless they’re pushing low quantities. The dudes at the top have always rocked expensive leathers for their boots/dress shoes. Real bold skins or high end full grain leather, at minimum.

you could look back on the last 5-7 years and definitely see the popularity of older air maxes, superstars and air forces. I just bought some 90s but swear i've seen them almost my entire life except I wore skate brands more when I was younger.

Living in Detroit 313, Addidas Top 10's and patent leather Concords were my shoe of choice. Of course, I made my way to Summerset Mall to get the Gucci's and Bally's. Rocked the cream Filas in the mid 80's.

In the early 80s , in Philly and Detroit, the adidas Top Ten were almost strict domain of dope boys and stick-up kids .
I have to correct the video's assertion that the NB 990 was the first $100 sneakers, because the Top Ten in 1980 was that . You would rarely see your average nerd kid wearing them even if his family had the means . My own older brother who sold drugs and bought me things was adamant about not buying them for me because he knew I would have been tested. Also, wearing Top Ten Adidas then were indicating to the neighborhood that you were nice with your fists .
In the 1980s, Baltimore had Top Tens in flavors both highs and lows, Ivan Lendi shoes, gear and warm ups. Velour adidas warm ups as well as Nike AF1s in flavors with the warm ups and gear.
Mondawmin was the main location in West Baltimore to set you straight for any event as a teen.

Troops were a popular dope boy sneaker for summer 88 and immediately fell off after that. I remember they had different models all named after sports cars. I had a pair of the Lamborghini. I remember Diadoras were also popular around that time as well. New Balance being on the list surprised me. Those were more popular amongst the backpackers and what we would refer to today as the "woke" crowd . Native Tongue rappers Tribe Called Quest and Jungle Brothers were known for wearing NBs . I guess Iit really depends on what area of the states you lived in during that time. Great video!!
