- In 1973 you could tick a box and Porsche would upgrade your Carrera RS from 200HP to near 300, cut out 160lbs, and add racing parts from the 917. This is a tribute to that car, but with a much bigger engine.

In the 1970s , a number of teams that were fielding the psychotically fast Porsche 917 had some special paint work done. These are referred to the "art cars". The 911 RSRs of that era never got wore such colors, so a gentleman named Jon decided to build his own cars. He takes a stock 1973 Carrera, guts them, rebuilds them in the image of arguably the best of the vintage 911s, and paints them to honor those iconic, impressive, legendary 917s.
The body is all metal, hand built and smoothed perfect. The engine - a monstrous 3.5L- comes from legendary Rothsport, suppliers to winning teams and discerning projects alike. It has a 5-speed gearbox, manual steering, and weighs 2200lbs.

I bounced around from classics, to Germans (old & new), to trucks, to Miatas, and more...
All in resistance to buying a 911.
Now I have one, and I get it. I have zero things I’d change. It truly is an incredible car - handling is great, steering is spectacular, brakes are balanced, power is there whenever you want it, it’s got space for people and things, and it’s reliable.
I resisted owning a 911 for a long time, now I can’t imagine not owning one.
Which gen?
Same here... for a long time I took pride in being the "under dog" and building or modifying cars to be as fast or faster than Porsche's and thinking my modified cars were just as good. Then I actually drove a Porsche and came to the hard realization that it was true....there is no substitute....I put my pride aside and went out and purchased one. Have only owned Porsches for the last 20 years and looking forward to owning more Porsches in the next 20.
Yeah i get it. I don't like porches cause they're too perfect too
Driver7 started with a 964. Now I have a 997
Ive been going back and forth between an m2 and a Cayman for a new car. I drive a set up e46 m3 now.
Porsche turns Zack into an evil witch 9:50
SPOT ON lmao
So funny. 😂😂😂
I'm gonna get you my pretties, and your front-engine cars too.
@@TheSmokingTire Bro, that was a legit Joker laugh
Perfect lol
This cars are just sublime, I think you are discovering this. This reminds me of a drive on the back roads of Spain, South to north 6 hours of pure and utter madness behind a RSR specced 993. A drive I will never ever EVER forget.
Being so lightweight and with that power must be insane
I think the combo of the altitude and wide tires made it feel more like 300HP, so it felt perfect. Quick throughout the revs but never scary (except for a wiggle over a bump). ZK
I can't believe Matt let you drive this one and didn't steal it away from you. 🤣
Do a 10 minute "Just the sound" video... Nothing but Zack laughing / driving reactions.
I definitely should have, and would have, but I had to get back to office work and had already ran over my time! Maybe I'll get another turn when the "hippy car" is done. ZK

I love this color combination, best for this kind of Porsche 911
Cars like this are absolutely why I love Porsches. The modern cars are okay but this RSR (even if it is a replica) is why I fell in love with Porsche. Job well done to the owner.
The original 73 911 - RS was a 2.7 Magnesium cased aircooled flat six. The RSR option in 73 was a 2.8 Magnesium cased. Later in 74 the first IROC season ran modfied RSR's with I belive a 3.0 mag cased.
This car is super nice. Would love to have one :)
Awesome air cooled 911, sounds mean. Can’t wait to get back to NZ to my 73! 330hp and 1020kgs, worked 3.6 from a 964
Zack is such a classy and genuine cat. I enjoy his gratitude and gracious nature.
I like to see enthusiasts show this kind of appreciation for their shared love of the rareified driving experience rather than some others °cough° who come off as subtlely jaded or entitled.
I never liked the 911 growing up and it annoyed me how much people adored them. As I get older and learn more about them I’m starting to understand all the fanfare. I really need to drive one. Thanks for the great video!
Same. It took until my 30's, and I had to drive more than one to appreciate them.
14:18 Expertly convinces himself to drive a little longer because of reasons *Giggles Away*
It's for science. ZK
loving the gear ratios. seems a little shorter but not too short.

The construction dude is Hector from fast and furious
He's still working on those 3 Hondas xD
Cars you never knew existed. More acurately, options. Just me?
Simply amazing, how come this didn’t pop on up on my feed sooner
Good point on the sound. After years of watching 911's on track, I always thought they sounded like dookie. In fact it wasn't until recently that I found that some people actually like the sound. I will say that as my appreciation for Porsche has grown I have warmed to the sound of some examples. It is certainly better from the drivers seat
It took me a while to warm up to you Zach when you first came to Smoking Tire. Now I would say you are one of the very best auto journalists! And my personal favorite. Keep up the awesome work, and thank you so much!!
Zack, you’re a good bastard for replying to people on here. Keep it humble!
The sound is a fuckin MUSIC FROM HEAVEN!
your best review Zach - I am also ho hum about most 911s and worse about 356s, but this car is awesome - KUDOS to all.
Vagueness is a common comment with those unfamiliar with the 915. The way you're shifting it, its a REALLY good example by the looks haha
$22,000 in 1973 is worth $127k today. Holy shit. The RSR upgrade was $46k in today's money.
Great video Zack! Definitely getting more comfortable behind the camera ... more of this please!!
"He has a great eye for detail" then shows some interior trim that is not lined up. Zack, I know you did that on purpose!
😅
Ha I saw that too but didn't want to be the one to bring it up!
The instant throttle response of an NA car....
Great car...great vid..thanks Zack. Sorry Matt....but Zack is the man now...smoked em.
I didn't resonate with Zack, like I do with Matt. That being said, after the giddy "car guy' laugh, on throttle, that just changed. His true car nerd came all the way out. I guess, i just needed the right experience. Cool to see your growth on the channel! Keep the excitement, man.
Yeah, I felt the same way about this video. I usually turn Zack off after seeing the car perform. Nice guy, just doesn't always make me want to listen for 20 minutes. I enjoyed all of this video.
I think it's a lot harder to do this well than most suspect, so I'm glad to see Zack come into his own
This is great and all but how’s the turn radius?
I'm 66 and have owned and driven Sports Cars as a daily car every day since I got my license at 17.
I've owned just about every thing.
I've lived thru " back in the day"
What I will tell you is, PORSCHE as a Sports Car company.
Is , and has been, and always will be. A Sports Car Company, dedicated to " The Art of Driving".
But this sounds so cliche ,when you lived thru the Times, Porsche did as I did. Holding their rear engine 4 and 6 cylinder configuration, stubbornly thru the " widow maker years, that was extremely hard. Most manufacture's would never have survived, that era.
So many " Sports Car" manufacturers, crumbled to public and worse marketing departments ,constant attempt, to make a "Sports Car" do all things for all People, PORSCHE has always said "NO !" And "No way !"
PORSCHE held firm to their Design, and to only build a "Sports Car" that was always, "ALWAYS" A tool for a Sports Car Driver !
Today you think "ah that's no big deal"!
But living thru those 50's 60's ,70's 80's and 90's.
PORSCHE didn't give in,and I mean under DIAMOND pressure to comply to give in to give up ,building a Sports Car as a tool for a Driver.
Porsche would always say "NO" we stand behind our rear engine design and we ONLY build Sports Cars for Sports Car Drivers.
So many Sports Cars have come and gone thru 70 yrs.
Yet PORSCHE 911, still stands today. It's THE bench mark, of ALL, Sports Cars.
The 6 has ALWAYS,been pitted against V8, V10,V12.
And yet here in 2021, the end of Gas Powered Cars.
PORSCHE the one to beat, the one to drag out against much more powerful cars to prove , They too are a Sports Car.
Yet PORSCHE, is still the TOOL for a Sports Car Driver.
ALWAYS!
Yes the ,trends have always come and gone, even as buyers or collectors " cool factor" fickle tastes change.
So don't feel you ,caved in, to a Cult. Instead understand, you connected with PORSCHE, the heart of PORSCHE, you finally see, Porsche " is the tool, for a Driver.
That is a very nice build and I was the same way with Porsche until they finally won me over. We do need to have more fun with our cars and be different but tasteful (or not if it makes you smile). Nothing like shifting gears on a curvy road and nice breeze in a car with a unique look based on your taste.
I am a bit surprised the builders didn't pay alittle more attention to some details. Get it all right li
sounds even more fabulous on outside, straightaways!
Sad that cars like this are not produced anymore from factories. Lightweight and powerful, but I guess that's because they can't build such cars more due to safety regulations
I get the orange belts, but they make him look like a crossing guard 😄
THAT SOUND....Magical.
that car sounds awesome !
i see a hippie car liveried 911 rsr every year the the lime rock historics, looks great
Jeez how fast is a 350hp car that ways 2200lbs I have a gti with performance package and I think it’s quick from the factory
Honestly the best looking cars for the the 70's is the Porsche's an the 240z's.
Zach they are fun to drive and great cars... stop trying to fight it. and this one looks and sounds spectacular. Keep up the good work... and btw less cackling like a little...........
Sounds turbo‘d with all this air rushing in from time to time.
to be an automotive journalist and say "I don't like Porsches" is insane. One of the greatest records in Motorsports history, widely regarded as the best manufacturers of sports cars....i can't even
The KoolAid will make ya feel good.
Oh god! Fantastic car!
“He has a great eye for detail”
Immediately cuts to a shot of misaligned interior trim.
And the upside down gas pedal
Definition of 'creamy smooth' in the automotive dictionary: Porsche flat-six - from behind the wheel 👌
That thing sounds epic!!!
such a beautiful sound
gotta say i know that laughin/giggling goofy sound that escapes as ya squeeeeeezzzz that pedal that last 1/4" to the floor and the machine seems to giggle back in agreement and sends that message up your spine to your brain stem..... ya can neither stop nor prevent the urge/feeling and satisfaction..... welcome to the world of Porsche Zac .... we been waitin fer ya
Should do a series on this guy’s builds...and just driving.
Nice work zack. Loved the joke about putting up wall around us with Hannah.
Yes...embrace the power of the flat 6 Zack...give in to the noise!
I have yet to hear a flat 6 i don't thoroughly enjoy.
Try the Subaru one :)
@@zfzmikey the Subaru flat 6 has the same physical firing order as the Porsche.
good one Zack. More!
I love 911s and have owned both 911s and 912s but once I drove a 914 I couldn't go back to 911s. Hate that weight in the back and that emptiness in the front. Great video!!
Such a beautiful car 😍
What a great car!
The mid throttle misfire because he is wanted to make it look like a MFI but it's an EFI. When RGruppe tell you what to do and you are ashamed to do it properly
Also, maybe they didn't GAF about part throttle response because #racecar? IIRC ITBs aren't the easiest to tune for part throttle performance.
Air cooled flat six sounds great buddy boy!
Dream Porsche right here
That was awesome Zack!
Vegas buffet of car shopping!
That is funny
Super cool video and review! 👌
Autotempest got me 2 grand more on the appraisal my insurance gave me on my wrecked Honda. It really did make it easy to find prices.
Cheers Zack, such an intoxicating sound. :)
Great episode Zack!
Why am I still awake
"Sweet! Old-school Porsche video. Please be Matt. Please be Matt. Dammit."
The auto-generated captions call the engine sound [Music]. Damn right.
I was always under the impression that the RSR's real benefit was the mid-mounted engine ... not the +20hp ...
@whosthatdrummer Yeah you are right ... for some reason I though they had been mid engine for some time, but it happened first time with the 991 911 RSR.
Woke up my dog shitting on the stairs cuz she doesn't feel good. Can't fall asleep. At least these this to watch....
That thing is no more quiet or refined than a Miata from where I'm sitting. Engine definitely sounds 1000 times better though.
"Porsche RSR Meets 917" Maybe you mean 'RS meets 917'. The first RSR was a 911 with things like 917 brakes added.
Beautiful car.
Epic car!!! Thatsound
There is no such a thing as a 1973 Carrera. Judging by the 'before' picture, it's based on a 1973 911T.
can you guys do a review on a 997.2 C4S manual??
Is the ducktail spoiler actually functional? Reading about Singer's tribute, they had to make adaptations to the original to show any value in the wind tunnel.
Yes, it aids cooling by creating a pressure point in front of the inlet. It aided rear downforce enough for the car needing a RS front bumper.
There's very few videos on the internet where you actually watch a paradigm shift taking place in the host. Fuck ya Zack.
Watch on the right.
Are You left handed Zack?
2:37 weight saving
How is the man 'self made' if he owned a 911 at 18?
He mowed a LOT of lawn as a kid. And I mean a LOT!
He's my dad. He used a student loan to buy it :-P
One word. JOYOUS
I am kinda new to the car world. Is this made from scratch or do they still need a real porsche as a base? Cause I wondered if this is "legal" building a porsche engine and chassis, slappin a porsche sticker on it and selling it. I mean Ferrari doesn't even allow you to have a custom paint job on their cars, like deadmaus did... Would be grateful if someone can elaborate on this.
If he could stop talking for a half a second, we could hear the beauty of this machine.
That Klapman Kackle®
Not loud enough and the exhaust seems a little wrong, but whatever pretty cool...
Good review
Hell yeah!!!!!!!
amazing car
Gulf Livery ❤
Let’s talk about Chris Banning’s RSR...
works great thru the esses!
