I just got one of these in March. I also thought my smoke unit didn't work. But after 5-10 mins of running I saw a little wispy smoke. So yesterday I put about 5-6 drops of fluid in the stack and ran it almost full throttle. After several loops around it poofed out some smoke, shooting it in the air. Made little smoke streamers. Kept it running and it popped out multiple smokes. Looked cool in the air.

@@outtascale I used some Lionel smoke fluid too. About 5-6 drops. I won't add any more until I see very little smoke. You can't overfill or not have any in there. Not any will make the heating element burn up. Too much and it will run out somewhere on your layout.
This was the first HO scale train set I ever bought with my own money a few years back in late 2020. From my experimentation, the locomotive has to be running at literal full speed in order for the smoke unit to start working. Other than that, it's honestly a good running locomotive. My only irk with it is that it's missing its valve gear, though I can only assume it was removed in order to bring the cost down. I actually recently upgraded the plastic wheels on the caboose, gondola and tender with metal ones, and they run great.
Wow, congrats on getting the smoke to work! I thought I was running it pretty darn fast, but apparently not fast enough. Thanks for weighing in, as I thought I was going crazy. You must be the locomotive whisperer.
@@outtascale Believe me, I'm not. I'm still very much a beginner in the HO scale scene, despite having been in it for a few years. I'm still scared of taking apart some of my locomotives for fear of not being able to put them back together properly again.
New out of the box. Easy to snap together and hook up. Engine runs, light works, but there is a odd back to front rock in the engine e very few feet. It is noticeable but my wife did not notice it until I pointed it out. Other than that, runs great!
