A little story for those that loved Rick...In the mid 80's I went to see Jerry Garcia Band at a small club in Poughkeepsie,N.Y. It was small, very small and when I got inside I was pleasantly surprised to find out Rick Danko was opening, solo acoustic. He came out smiling and said,"This is like seeing Jerry in his living room!" He was great that night just like countless other nights.
My band got to open up for Rick in October 99' He invited us to play his encore with him, Shape Im in and Crazy Mama. He was the most genuine dude I ever met, great guy, Sweetheart
It's impossible not to like Rick Danko. His years with The Band are legendary, and he did some wonderful things with Paul Butterfield. Rest in peace,Rick. You're still awesome.
@@lewstone5430unfortunately that’s not true. He was arrested for heroin possession in Japan in 1997 because his wife sent him heroin in the mail. I’m not judging him at all, he struggled with addiction for much of his adult life. Just pointing out that it’s unfortunately false that he had fully gotten through his opiate addiction by this time.
Oh God,ANOTHER one who doesn't understand the word ' underrated ' and thinks it's cool to say...so and so ( insert name of extremely famous and talented musician) is underrated. NO,NO,NO,NO,NO! Nobody's ever thought of him as underrated, he's extremely rated by fans, critics and fellow musicians.
Very underrated bass player. Fabulous musician. Good soul. He's probably looking down at us now, laughing. He, Richard and levon are probably entertaining the rest of heaven with a great jam session. RIP
I got to hang with Rick and the crowmatics back just before Ricks passing and Levon it was a series of coffee house gigs , it was a lot of fun hanging with a great , miss him a lot! See you when I get home Rick Levon and Robbie!🙏✌️💪🇺🇸
Rick had a longtime addiction to anything that would ease the pain resulting from his 1969 car crash in Woodstock. He was arrested in Japan while on tour with Danko/Fjeld/Andersen; supposedly, he cleaned up while awaiting trial, but...according to Jim Weider...relapsed not long before his death. He and Elizabeth Danko had been evicted from their home and were living in a motel when he died...less than a week after his last show in Ann Arbor (the Video is on TH-cam...it’s a hard watch if you love Danko).
Interesting revelation, there, that it was Robbie who had grown tired of touring. Further demonstrated when they reunited the band but he would never join them. I'm glad they carried on despite losing him. They remained terrific.
@@aarfeld you said it's a "revelation". Watch the movie again: Robbie talks about being tired of touring, Rick says he's going to keep doing what he's doing. And both did exactly like they said they would. The only revelation is that you thought they said more than they really did.
@@triptoyourheart Many people assumed that they all wanted to retire, including the interviewer on this clip. The Band's 16 year reunion set the record straight.

I saw him do a solo acoustic show in the early 90’s, he kept saying how good the soup was he’d had just before getting on stage. I think Frampton might have been the main act.
No, Robbie wrote amazing songs and even when he stopped playing with them, the others still played his songs. Levon never wrote more than few songs in his entire life, as great as he was as a musician. But Robbie was the creative force and the man with a vision. All of them were still equally needed to make The Band happen.
1.40....watch him pull his hand away from Rick’s, seems almost like he’s pissed off with him, something contemptuous about it. Maybe the gratuitous fawning one indulges in when one is under the influence of narcotics. So it’s not the person issuing compliments it’s the drug induced state.....am I over analysing this bollocks?

Rick Danko... even people who’ve never heard of The Band would be utterly and instantly charmed by this man.
In bad shape, an addict
