  • FIX IT for next to nothing. Don't let the insurance company take away you good running car.
Come A Long 2ton(smallest size you can use): amzn.to/3vATm80 Come A Long 4ton(for heavy frame damage): amzn.to/3aZc1Rf
    TOW chain with slip hook 3/8 14' : amzn.to/3vx6uuy
VISE GRIPs w/collision puller chain loops: amzn.to/3jpBLux
Collision CLAMP on hooks pullers: amzn.to/3joPSR2 or amzn.to/3G7pswT
Rear End someone or got rear ended? These techniques are the same, but you must disable the airbags(pull fuse/s) if driving/yanking rear end damage out. Pulling from the front like I did(driving in reverse) should never trigger an airbag. You got T-Boned? use the same techniques for a side damage accident. Of course if airbags are deployed that can weigh heavily on your decision to keep it. My general rule is, if it can still drive, trans shift, etc then repair it. If an entire wheel assembly has been ripped off, you will need to weigh this.
CAR STORY for those who care to know.
My wife bought this car when it was a year/two old and it has been a work horse and paid for itself a hundred times over. I have hauled trailers(yep I made a full size hitch on the back) with thousands of pounds of riding mowers, tillers, snowmobiles, you name it thousands of combined miles all while pushing 35-40mpg plus. I can't count the numbers of times this has been loaded internally(hatch back) with 2-3 generators, tillers, snowblowers etc. Sure I have trucks but dang the mileage(and Air Conditioning) makes this a joy to drive. This has made/saved me so much money. I think my wife bowed out driving it full time around 100k miles and I put the rest of the 337,000miles on the orig eng/trans. Everything works flawlessly, dare I say like any brand new car as I have been the only mechanic for over 25years on it. Obviously I have grown very fond of this little guy and can't let it go to scrap. It was stolen 11 years ago and gone for months. It was joy rode hard and had frame damage all underneath pushing the drivers wheel back a decent amount. I have a video of me fixing that. Since then no issues and it has been a daily driver and I'm eager to push it to well over half a million miles.
    INSURANCE COMPANIES:
Most people don't know they can buy back their car for salvage value and still get paid(even if your fault w/full coverage). Say they determine your car is worth $4000 but you want to keep it. They will sell it back to you for around whatever junkyard value is. Usually around 10%, so $400. So you get a check for $3600 and keep the car. They will send you a salvage title/paperwork. You will need to get a rebuilt title. This is super easy. Most states all you have to do to get a rebuilt title is fix it enough to pass safety inspection(not smog/emissions). So good tires, no windshield damage and no deployed air bags etc. It's the exact same test you likely do every year for your car anyway. My state I have to pay around $15 for the safety test and then $10 for a new title. So $25 to get a rebuilt title. All insurance companies insure rebuilt cars with basic no fault/liability for the exact same cost as a non rebuilt/salvaged car.

Repairing that level of damage was one thing, repairing it and narrating it to camera at the same time is a talent on a whole new level. Glad to see Ginger is fine, I was in a major accident (major for the car not me) with my dog and it's surprising how little they are effected, they don't care about what just happened, they instantly go back to the same old dog who just wants to play, who wants treats, who wants walks and who wants affection. Thanks for sharing.

In the summer of 2001, my wife hit a moose with my 84 Subaru BRAT. She was fine, the moose was not, and the BRAT was in tough shape. With a few junkyard parts, my 80 year old maple tree, a come-a-long, and a small pile of other tools, the BRAT drove another 50K before I sold it off.
Nice work, Moe. Keep this old stuff running as long as possible. My 87 Toyota truck has 292K so far, and it keeps going with basic maintenance.

Great job! I've been doing stuff like that since I was a kid, I learned it from my dad and uncle... I just replaced half a 2000 Ford Excursion diesel 4x4 roof because a tree fell on it and it was salvaged! Bought it cheap! got about $6k and about 100 hours invested in it now, but that includes cleaning and detailing the gutted interior as I reassembled it. I think people seem to forget the saying "where there is a will there is a way!" God bless you for sharing some old school tricks!

So glad you took time to post repair on You Tube. I used small front yard tree to chain hold the frame and used come along to a bigger truck
pulling from other side. Instead of risk snapping vice grips, I bought some professional pulling clamps from eBay. Yes, a frame machine is likely a better tool but only worth investing if you do frequent work. Great thing about come along is you can "feel" how much your pulling and watch as you slowly pull. Trees are great sturdy friends !

I've done this type of repair to an old banger in the past, but these days in the UK if you have to go through the insurance, for example in a bump with another vehicle, the car can very often be given a write off category which forbids you to repair it and it has to be scrapped. A real shame because even a small accident can waste a fixable car.

    • @VeyronBD
      @VeyronBD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah, ive seen mild scratches on a plastic bumper count as an insurance write off. Its pretty ridiculous.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

We're lucky enough to buy back written off cars. After repair they go though a basic safety test and can be put back on the road. It is always branded a rebuilt/written off car. Older cars get written off all the time with just cosmetic dents/paint damage.

I never understood why people would decide to blindly turn with vision occluded from any vehicle(s) in the closest lane. If there is anything blocking your entire view of the other lanes, never "just go for it." Driver's ed taught me that much, that there is never a guarantee other drivers will see you, no matter the direction. Also, to anyone who uses any outer lane to turn left, you're a moron. A turn lane exists for a reason. Stop cutting off traffic because you missed.

I don't know where you live? but the city I live in there are quite a few intersections. where the two left most lanes must turn left. but it's pretty easy to tell because the traffic lights will have green arrows for the vehicles that turn left, and solid green lights for the ones that don't. and warning signs before a person gets to these traffic lights. but there are a lot of people driving around listening to loud music, and or having conversations totally obvious to what's going around them. a person should be especially cautious during twilight conditions because shadows are cast quite differently.

Reminds me of many years ago when I was a young buck, I had a 1970 Ford Fairlane 500 and I rear ended a car at the railroad tracks. This was in Battle Creek, Michigan right next to Post Cereal. Pushed the whole front in. We bought beer and picked up a heavy chain and went to a farmers field. We pulled the whole front end back out and slapped on a junk yard hood. Looked kinda cool. I had a green car with a dark blue hood. :)
I have been binge watching your videos and they are very entertaining. Reminds me a lot of when I was young and my whole tool assortment was a pair of vice grips, Two screw drivers, A hammer, and a cheap Sears ratchet set. LOL.

I sure could have used this video 25 years ago. I was driving an old CorollaTercel. Yeah, when tercels first came out they combined the names. I got rear-ended by a lady from the Bahamas after I stopped at a red light. Driving in Miami I have been rear-ended 4 times! She pushed me through the intersection. My radio came out of the dash and the driver seat broke as I was s slammed back.
I towed it home. I had to sweet talk the insurance company to sell it to me because they were going to take it from me after paying only like $1200. The rear end was pushed in on the rear wheel. I popped off the rear wheel and got a sledge hammer and went to work. The apartment building I lived in was cheap and had a bunch of central American boxers that were housed there. they were really nice neighbors and came out and took the sledgehammer away from me and took turns banging on my car with the sledgehammer with big smiles on their faces. Once the wheel was not in contact with the metal it drove Ok. I propped up the front seat by placing my ice cooler in the back seat. When my sister came to town and needed a cheap car I gave her the beater and she drove it for a long time.
Moe, your video is going to help so many people who are screwed if they lose their cheap car after an accident. I think this is going to be a very popular video! I would have never believed you would be able to get that hood to close right again. 😎👍👍

Poor Ginger. I have had a similar thing happen twice recently. Once driving down a dirt road I was familiar with but not with the new ditch cut from recent rain fall. I hit the breaks and my puppers ended up on the floorboard. Then we were traveling down the road at night when a coyote ran out and I generally try to keep the mindset that trying to avoid the animal is more dangerous than hitting it. But this was a big coyote and I slowed down just enough to keep from getting any front end damage but once again my dog ended up abruptly on the floor board. He never got injured but I always felt really bad for him.

Glad you and ginger are alright. I couldn’t agree more on how a dented panel looks better than a white or black one.
I hit a hog a year ago and it did way more damage to my little car than that truck.

I repaired most of it and then someone hit the same corner while it was parked.

Arthur Tussik in America. Something so satisfying seeing the crumple come out. Saw a vid where they were pulling the rear right side of a 1960 Chev, The one with the batwings. Metal probably 3 times as thick as the Ford.
Great work there , and I must compliment you on your dog training. Most people dont take the time and the results are unruly and uncontolled pets out in public.

I've put 400+K miles on vehicles that were on their last leg when I got them with minimal, but religious maintenance. In fact, I've got a waiting list of people who want my vehicles if I decide to sell them and I'm sure you're in that same boat. Cheers Moe! Onto the next project my Friend! Zip~

My wife had a center collision on her car. I did something similar to this, but instead of a tree, I yanked on it with my truck/hitch. I've since told her to get a new car, but she refuses. Still driving it years later.

Awesome Dog . Hope it didn't get hurt when hit the dash. I did similar thing with my sons 99 Corolla which i drive now . Didn't go quite to that extent but looks ok. Frame was bent down and broken headlamp and side marker . Bumper cover is great shape didn't get damaged at all . Fender is bulged out and the hood was buckled . The hard part to pull out is the core support here the hood latch is , but got it to close the hood. 203K miles and counting.

I'm not really a purple person either. It's my wife's car, but I drive it way more than her. Mainly because it has AC and amazing fuel economy. Ford actually painted these and the trucks purple just to have them stand out on car lots. Essentially attention grabbers. I actually remember when my wife/girlfriend at the time bought this in the late '90s out of the newspaper from a car lot. When she showed up to buy it they didn't actually didn't want her to buy it because it gained so much attention and steered people into more expensive cars. I thought it was really odd, they kept trying to talk her out of it.

Glad you and Ginger are ok! Great work on the repair. I've done this on quite a few of my vehicles and family member's vehicles in the past. In the beginning of the video when you had all the tools on the ground. I was wondering where the hammers, pry bars and Hi-lift jack were. Like you showed, I found out pretty early in my repair attempts that the hammers are your friend. Hammering on or around the damaged areas while having pulling pressure on them helps relieve some of the tension on the parts. That helps them return closer to their original shape.

Perhaps a doggie seat belt? I have one each for my two beagles that clips to their harness and the seat belt. They can move around some but won't get thrown into the dash and the harness spreads the load, not to be used with a collar. The repair techniques you showed were great.
