    Nice work Jerry. You know, years ago one of my good friends had a body shop. When he needed a frame straightened or unibody pulled out he called a fell that went by the name of “Fred the Frame Man”. All he had ever done and all his father before him did. He had a portable puller like yours that had little steel wheels on all corners to move it around. It was amazing to watch him work. He would just look it over and commence pulling first here and then there. Before you know it all the body panels fit perfectly. Once he worked on a Chevy pickup that had hit a bar ditch. It was like a swayback horse. An hour or so and it was straight as a string. I enjoyed watching him work.
    I enjoy your hands on work much more than your tool reviews, just my opinion. Try to stay warm. Tom

      Ain't that crazy.... my dad talked of guys like that back when he worked. Said, "One old guy would come in with a bucket of tools and fix anything." Those were the days I'll bet. Good times the 50's-80's - Merry Christmas Okie Tom 🎄❄🎄

    Great video- my son's 1999 Subaru Outback just got rear ended a few days ago. The impact looks as bad as this and also affected the rear doors to line up properly and actuate the door sensors. I am waiting to get an assessment this week and hoping they can at least straighten the body. It will probably be considered totaled unfortunately. Thank you so much for sharing.

    It's like watching some kind of sorcery! Amazing. Oh, and a heads-up, I think the purple filter cartridges on your respirator are strictly for protection against particulates. For protection against spay paint or any other solvents, you should have a VOC (volatile organic compound) type of cartridge for vapours and fumes.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. Body shops have pots in the floor with a chain to hook to. You can use another car, tractor, tree, etc. I have even bolted plates to the floor - sort of dangerous but if you do it right, it'll hold just fine 😊

    Having issues bending back a trunklid on a Mazda 3. Don't want it to look pretty, just need it to lineup and close so the lights are matched.
    Any advice for getting large gaps out of one side for a deck lid that was pushed in a bit and upward? Measurements on both side of the rear seem the same after some pulling.
    Deck lids seems to take some magic, any points or reference videos would be appreciate.
    Thanks and love your videos.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If your measurements are good and the hood should fit, then you'll have to be checking the hinges. They get bent. Sometimes you can think of a way to straighten them sometimes not. You can open holes bigger, use body shims, even sit on the trunk lid sometimes - it's a thing where anything goes - no clean cut answer :)

    Hey brother nice video helpful insight… Quick question though how much would you say this would roughly cost to repair damage like that?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was around 1000 for me to do it myself but the insurance co totaled the car so I guess the estimate was more than the 7000 the car was worth at the time. I'd say the cost would average around 4-5K but I never wrote estimates just did body work :)

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว

      They didn't have the rear body panel - so I pulled it best I could. The bumper assembly was 350 (had a crack) and the deck lid was 2 something (had a few dings) Merry Christmas to you too 🎄❄🎄

  • @mistahglaude7540

    What would you charge for a job like this? Or what’s the range?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is a clean title repairable I picked up at an auction - it was sold for a lease company. I imagine the cost of the repair was more than the co wanted to pay or near the value of the car. I'm guessing the cost to repair it exceeded $5000 pretty easily. The rear body panel alone is just over $1000. A good deck lid for this was around 600. Bumper assembly was 800, etc. All the parts I bought were somewhat damaged so I got them at a pretty steep discount. Merry Christmas MG 🎄❄🎄

    Nice work. I’m just curious how much weaker it will be than the first time it was hit if it’s rear ended again.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To me... I'm not an engineer, but I don't see it changing the safety of the vehicle. If anything, the panel is work hardened which means it's a bit stiffer. That being the case, it will simply bent in another spot. Truth is, if you get hit hard, nothing is safe. Body panels are literally 6 human hairs thick and can be folded up by hand - that's not very good protection. Just drive safe and be very careful to not get in an accident :)

    • @hamannlaura
      @hamannlaura 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LakesideAutobody can’t control a rear collision. I was rear ended this week while waiting to turn left -turn signal was on. The person claimed they just didn’t see me. They were obviously driving distracted. I assume my car is fixable rather than totaled and will go through a process similar to what you did in this video (which is why I was watching it). Metal tends to weaken the more that it’s moved, think bending a wire back and forth until it breaks. That’s why I was wondering. So I was thinking my car may not protect me the same way if it happens again, but I’m glad you don’t think that’s possible.

    Masterful work, Jerry! How long did this entire job take you from start to finish (bodywork to paint to washing/detailing)? I ask because this situation looks almost similar to what happened to my 2012 Toyota Camry SE. I’d gotten rear-ended by a young gentleman driving his company car (a silver Fusion almost exactly like this one) on the evening of 12/21/23 and he was found to be 100% at fault by both the police in the town where the accident happened and by both of our insurers. I dropped my Camry off at a body shop approved by my insurer (State Farm, who in turn are going to go after the other guy’s employer’s insurance-Erie Insurance-via subrogation) on January 22nd and it’s been there ever since. Every time I call for status updates, my estimator keeps telling me this, that, and the other and I can’t help but feel he’s giving me and State Farm the runaround…

      I started on around Dec 23 and ended all these vids on Jan 20. That was only working a couple hours a day making videos and such. The hours on this is not that much actually - maybe 2-3 days to get it into paint - full 8 hour days. Then another day to clean it up and detail it :)

      @faschuck 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So a little shy of a month then? If so, this definitely sounds encouraging. After all, my contact at the body shop told me he suspects my car SHOULD be finished “sometime next week,” which would be in line (or nearly in line) with the progress you demonstrated here. Once again, nice work!

    • @LakesideAutobody

      More than the car is worth. I picked it up at a COPART auction to repair and drive :)

      Those bumpers are usually held on with small screws, clips, etc. so it doesn't take much to tear or knock them off - especially when cold.

      The only thing you got wrong is shipping it. I own it - 2018 clean title Ford Fusion SE, all wheel drive, loaded with 109,000 miles for $5900 from an auction. I think I can live with the bumper covering up any imperfections. Merry Christmas 🎄❄🎄

    Hit by a drunk driver, who had no insurance what would be the average cost? Literally same amount of damage except for the actual trunk lid

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well this was a 13-15000 dollar car when it got hit and the lease company thought it was too much to fix it so they sent it to COPART (auction). It sold for 8000 so the repair costs were probably similar. I'm sure you could find an independent shop to do the work for less. It's very costly today to get even small amounts of damage fixed. Good luck - let me know what you end up doing :)

  • @RenR70

    The rear body panel should’ve been replaced IMO, the metal has been stretched & the crumble zones are now compromised, if it’s hit again it will not react the way it was designed to.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we are all being fooled by the OEM's and crumple zones. There is no way any amount of design is going to protect you in a serious accident. I'm totally confident that it will behave the same way in an accident - it will get absolutely crushed. If you want are serious about safety - best to drive an old dump truck :) Merry Christmas 🎄❄🎄

    that back panel should have been replaced. this the typically low-quality repair I would expect from an insurance contract shop.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right and I really want to make a video showing how to do that but they want $1000 for it from the dealer and you can't find them anywhere else. I can't justify that as I'm the owner and will be driving it - picked it up for 5900 so.... don't want to go overboard. Happy Holidays Steven 🎄❄🎄

    I guess if you’re at fault you want this done to their vehicle. But having been rear-ended, I’d rather they total the vehicle. Ridiculous given the fact the vehicle’s ability to absorb impact has been affected, yet it’s “acceptable”.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me assure you that no vehicle can absorb impact. Don't be fooled - Don't get in an accident. That's the key.... drive save. All cars, no matter what the report is, will fold like a soda can in a serious collision - new or repaired ✌

    • @jessec5713
      @jessec5713 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LakesideAutobody That’s easy to say until someone else’s negligence causes the crash. NHTSA says all collisions are crashes, not accidents. They are all preventable.
      Automotive studies have gone on for decades. Repairing a frame has weakened the metal and thereby, when flexed back to near its original shape, has weakened its ability to absorb impact. I can’t convince you, but countless studies have been done regarding this. Take a piece of metal that you can bend. And bend it. And bend it back again. Eventually it will break apart.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jessec5713 I understand all that stuff but trust me - really - my brain knows this kind of stuff. If you get hit by something heavier than your car, you are toast - period. There is no amount of engineering that can save you - promise. That's just car companies trying to convince you that you are safer today. There are more deaths or at least the same amount of deaths on the high way today as in the 60's 70's and 80's. I can fold up a new fender by hand - literally fold it right up.... that's going to protect you???

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว

      This was a vehicle purchase at COPART - a car I picked up to flip. The cost was more than the insurance co wanted to pay so it was sold at the auction. The estimate must have been more than the car was worth to the lease company that owned it.
