    I wish we had videos like this when I was growing up. I had so much racism as a child and had to pick my identity. It is so lovely to see us younger generation moving in the right direction to embrace our identity and educating others about it. Great video.

      In my experience, we had racism but not everyone got offended but not everyone is forgiving either. If racism problem is hard to overcome, I think people need to learn to forgive each other.

    In medieval malaysia or tanah melayu it is called for Islamic indian trader....Tamil muslims and Gujaratis were dominant. However the Tamil group is also very dominant politically were they were appointed as Syahbandar and even sometimes Bendahara which is the 2nd most powerful in the kingdom. Also there were a sultan of Tamil Malay descendant who were said played in a critical role in subjecting the kingdom to Islamic norms away from Hindu norms. Also how many of us knew that Tamil language although Malay is lingua franca of the region acted as an important language of trade in Malacca's port which resulted the vocabulary to influence both the languages. Besides that a writer of Tamil Muslim descent is also considered to wrote the first printed piece of Malay literature. Since this video is about Mamak....i think this information is very apt. Also during colonial period this group returns doing multiple businesses giving rise to mixed peranakan community in various place called jawi peranakan just like baba and nyonya of mixed malay and chinese. As for the Mappila community in Malaysia which is the Muslims from Kerala.....they are the same business people arriving during the colonial period. But for normal Malaysian they are not really distinguishable at least in my place as their profession is similar to Tamil group. It is noted that all three groups I mentioned are very active in businesses and they have very strong connection with their fatherland unlike their Hindu counterparts who normally don't have ties with India anymore. For example the Mydin is owned by Gujarati Muslim people. It is very interesting to see that Malaysia still exist as melting point for different group of people since ancient times.

      Like any people of mixed ancestries and different upbringings, people are free to choose which labels they identify with more. Many Mamaks are of both Indian and Malay descent. In a related matter, many Javanese also would rather identify with being Malay than being Javanese, as not everyone is equally Javanese in language, tradition, etc.

    You should've mentioned that in Penang, where the Mamak or Jawi Peranakan/Jawi Pekan identity is strongest (And where the Mamak identity likely originated), many Mamaks are of *both* Indian and Malay descent. That is why it is possible for Mamaks to "jadi Melayu." In fact, many have fully assimilated into the Malay community, with their Mamakness only apparent from facial features (dark skin/thick eyebrows/unibrows/prominent nose/eye shadows/etc.), terms of endearment (Mamu/Mami/Nana/etc.), food (Kari/etc.), and dress (Kurta/etc.). From what I've observed, Indian Muslims elsewhere do not identify with the label Mamak, nor do they usually have Malay blood (Some Indian Muslims, even in 2021, are, sadly, against their children marrying Malays). This video was a bit of a wasted opportunity to explain all these things.

Some of the Indian Muslims are from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh in India and in fact may speak Urdu or Hindi. I do notice a lot of inter marriages between Pakistanis and North Indian Muslims and Malays here in Singapore. Very interesting indeed

      Can the Mamak who have fully assimilited become bumiputera ? How does the process work ? How do you prove you have assimilated ? I met in Penang people calling themselves Melayu but looking so much like Indians. When I ask about that (which maybe I shouldnt have) they told me they are "Malay mix". Can it just means they "jadi Melayu" but are not really mixed ?

    • @MalaysianTropikfusion
      @MalaysianTropikfusion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@christianjob To answer your questions:
      Most Mamaks *are* Bumiputeras. They are the product of Malay-Indian marriages. They are Muslims and they live in Tanah Melayu (Including Sumatra). They speak Malay (And very rarely their Indian ancestors' Dravidian/Indic languages) and they are culturally a mix of Malay and Indian. With each successive generation after the 'first Mamak' was born, they have been increasingly marrying outside of their community and into the wider Malay community, and they have been assimilating for generations. Even without having been fully assimilated, they are already Bumiputeras, courtesy of their Malay ancestry.
      The general Malaysian understanding of the term Mamak today is as a label for Indian Muslims (As in kedai Mamak; Mamak roti). That is not what the members of the various Indian Muslim communities call themselves by (Though some may accept it). They usually still identify as their ethnic groups, which are Tamils, Malayalis/Malabaris, Bengalis, Pashtuns, etc.), and not as Mamaks.
      There is no need for proof of assimilation. If, say, a Mamak or a 'Malay person of Mamak descent' in 2022 still 'looks Indian', as long as he opens his mouth and speaks Malay, and he lets people know of his profession of Islam and his Malay ancestry, he will be accepted by the various Malays as one of them (The Malays of his home state, at least). If the Malays or other Bumiputeras accept someone as part of their community, as one of them, with no reservations, that means that the person has assimilated.
      The way genetics works is you inherit your looks (phenotypes) from either one of your parents. So a Mamak (Malay-Indian) can look either fully Malay, fully Indian, or somewhere in the middle. Their looks do not make them less of a Malay or less of an Indian. It would be best for you not to get transfixed on looks, as that is a shallow measure of someone's identity. Even after two or three generations of marrying Malays, a family of Mamaks can still have half their offspring look Indian and half their offspring look Malay.
      Mamaks, in addition, do not only marry other Malays, but also other Mamaks and other Indian Muslims. The degree of "mixing" with the Malays vary, so they have different looks and different dominant identities. Some may feel more Indian, some may feel more Malay. The bottom line for all is that most of them nowadays speak Malay as a mother tongue, and they behave like Malays, whereas Indian Muslims may speak Malay only as a second tongue, and they are not culturally Malay.

    • @christianjob
      @christianjob ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MalaysianTropikfusion OK thanks for your answer. So let say an Indian Muslim who has 4 grand parents who are Indian Muslims but he has assimilated, can he become bumiputera and how is the process? I mean I have friends whose parents are from Indonesia. When my friends registered for citizenship, they were automatically registered as bumiputeras. They didnt have to prove that they stopped speaking Javanese or Bugis at home because I guess that the understanding of "Malay culture" in the constitution is broader, it kinda means Austronesian as in the colonial concept of "Malay race". But it is not the same for Indian Muslims who are not Austronesian. So I wonder how Indian muslims who do not mix with Malay can change to bumiputera status? What about Chinese muslims who would have assimilated or converted? Can they become bumiputera also without mixing?

As for the Mamak many convert because of economy reasons. Mamak is also the most beneficial community in the country because they can fit into bumiputera because they're Muslim religion and speaks Malay. These Mamak also will become Indian suddenly when grapping for the Indian seats in jobs and universities; 2 in 1 is what we call Mamak

    You should make a video about the Chettis of Malakka who are descendants of Indian Chettiar traders. They established trading posts during the medieval period in Malay peninsula and Sumatra after the Chola invasion of Southeast Asia

    For your kindly information, most of the workers brought to Malaysia during British colonization. It's not from Tamil Nadu, that time is known as Madras Presidency. These Madras Presidency is combination of current state of Orrisa, Andrah, Mysore, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. That time Tamil is common language spoken in that era. So it's doesn't mean those speak Tamil, means Tamilian. How could you forgotten the present of Chettiar during British Colonization. This Chettiar community came Malaysia from Tamil Nadu as a traders in money lending business, restaurant nand some other businesses. This is proven in Malaysia so call as Chitty Melaka. Kindly refer Madras Presidency 1801, this time most of the workers are recruited from Nilgris mountain which is border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. These people known as Irula and Badagas. And some brought from West Bengal ( Kolkata India) now settled in Negeri Sembilan, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

      Chetti is actually Chettiar from Tamil Nadu. They are 1st Tamil community came to Foreign country. They're traders, the main business is money lending, restaurant and etc bussiness. This Tamil community expanded their business to Myanmar, laos, Singapore n Malaysia. In Malaysia their started in Malaca, present knwn as Melaka. They're married local and settle here and some back to Tamil Nadu. Still you can see their monument in KL, especially in Lebuh Ampang. Thanks for bringing this topic. Many Malaysian forgotten the history of Chettiar. We can see many characters of Chettiar in P.Ramlee's movies. This people have strong connection with Batu Caves temple development and some Hindu temple architecture in Malaysia.
