    There is no problem for us wearing baju melayu or baju kurung, so why was that even an issue as culture inappropriate?

    • @timmy7138
      @timmy7138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      I wonder about that too...how it become inappropriate? If the content is bad like maybe wear traditional cloth in porn(example), then that should be inappropriate. But the content is about contact lens? Does it make any sense?

      I think the issue here was that she was not promoting the clothing itself. There was no reason for a lengha to be used in an ad for contact lenses. It felt out of place. If this ad was for selling attires then she could had dress in a saree,lengha,salwar kameez or a churidar and it won't matter. Also it's not really her fault, it's the company that decided to use it no her.

      @@fgtrhwu2 toxic la people like you, everything have to create a negative stance, when kids of difference races wears each other costumes to celebrate each other different culture is that selling of costumes too? If wearing each other costumes as a form of celebration it is ok, when one wears it to ridicule and to be discrimitory then that is a problem. If want to act activists at least have an iq to go along with the heart.

    My opinion cultural appropriation doesn't exist in Malaysia.. Period! Cultural appropriation exists in the US.. Malaysians shouldn't get into the disgusting hype that exist in the US.. Malaysians not like American. We are culturally diverse and have always taken other cultures in our country as our own..the problem with media today is they're leaning towards stupidity.. Medias, though not all, but generally speaking nowadays are trash.. The minds behind them are appalling..

    • @MagicalKid
      @MagicalKid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +118

      Exactly, the reason that there's the problem of cultural appropriation in the US is because of how white people used to bully other minorities and make fun of their culture but then would wear their traditional clothings in an overly sexual manner for Halloween. This doesn't happen in Malaysia.

Instagram people are mostly positive, and not as judgemental (eventhough some are). But twitter omg, they make a big deal out of everything. Almost as if every little things should be up for discussion or debate. Smh

      @@ryuvasangharravindramohan1308 Indian isn't an ethnicity. I didn't know you were that stupid to confuse ethnicity nd nationality. Just you understand English properly, I'll educate you :) Ethnicity refers to a group of people who practice a common culture, posses common beliefs, and/or common language. Indians don't have any of these things. You can be ethnic Japanese and be Indian.... You can be Black and be Indian. You can even be 100% French and be Indian. However, If you are not a citizen of India, then you are not an Indian. I'm a Tamil, not Punjabi, not Hindustani, not Bengali, or other groups from the subcontinent. Those are other people speak other languages and have other cultures that are alien to me and all other Malaysian Tamils. We Tamils don't traditionally wear Lehnga, and Punjabi and Gujurati people don't traditonally wear veshti or Kanchivaram sari.

    In my humble opinion.. I find this whole situation as a celebration of culture.. we are so far from amalgamation of different races in Malaysia, but this seems like we are heading that way.. try to look at it this way, because we are adapting and assimilating different cultures and tradition, we call Malaysia as the melting pot of different races and customs... we have variety of meals with influences from the east and west, we have Peranakan that donned kebaya and make it in their own ways, the Jawi Peranakan culture, we have henna culture in Malay etc.,and lots of borrowed words we use in our daily life comes from tamil and hokkien and mandarin.. But then, I was waiting for the news on TV3 and realized, that there were barely any other ethnicities represented in the prime time Malay dramas to which I never realized before my dad asked me the question. A lot of things came to mind on why this is happening. I really hope Malaysians, specifically the Malay majorities would open up to have these "difficult" conversations on representation and other things.
    but as for cultural appropriation appreciation thingy, I stand with the majority. This issue is only valid in The US. Never have I heard of any Malaysian wearing clothes from other ethnicities to make fun of it.

      YES! YES! YES! I've literally been saying this for years. Indians is a nationality and a not a race/ethnicity. I never say Indian, I always call myself Malaysian Tamil. At the end of the same I'm not the same as a Punjabi or Marathi from India as we don't even have the same customs or language. I'm a Tamil! A race or ethnicity are people who share common practices , beliefs, and/or languages! People need to learnt this.

    • @fgtrhwu2
      @fgtrhwu2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are 2 ways to view this. One is like you said it, you can represent yourself through ethnicity or if you want you can also use Indian since you are also acknowledging that your ancestors belongs to that particular region. If someone asks what kind of Indian you are, then you can mentioned which ethnicity you are from. I feel Indian can be used as a nationality or a race. Indian is the set and your ethnicity is a subset of it.

      @wanaidilanwarwanazlan5085 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It is the same issue among the Malays. We do have different ethnicity as well. But to conclude us in one big set, we are just being regarded as Malay in general. And we are okay with it. We do have minorities subgroups within Malay such as Peranakan Samsam, Peranakan Jawi, Bugis, Jawa, Banjar, etc and all of these have different customs and language as well.

    • @Blaze6432
      @Blaze6432 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fgtrhwu2 Very incorrect. There are no racial requirements to being Indian. Anyone can be an Indian citizen and any race can trace their family in India. Tom Alter was 100% White European but he is actually an Indian. with that logic, We are Earth race, because we are all from planet earth. South Asia is a region, India is a political entitiy that Malaysian born Tamils are not apart of.

    • @fgtrhwu2
      @fgtrhwu2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Blaze6432 It's not incorrect, that's why I said there are 2 ways to view it and both are legit.
      1. One is like how you said it, in terms of citizenship anyone can be Indian.
      2. There is also the race aspect of it. Where having ancestors from the region and being the original descendants of the region is also an identity called Indian.
      3. There is also the genetic similarity angle, where people within certain regions have similar genetic traits like certain mitochondrial haplogroups more closely related to each other compared to the ones that are further away. And yes you are right on the earth race thing as well.
      4. We are all part of the human race. It's just that within the human race there are variations and some are more closely related to each other genetically compared to others.
      5. And these are the larger groups for example Marathi,Tamil and so on are part of the Indian race. While Indian is also a subset of the Asian race, which in turn is a subset of the human race containing Whites,Blacks and the rest.
      6. I'm not saying you are wrong, i'm saying that there is another way to view this which is why both ways are acceptable.

    Guys, cultural appropriation is not solely a US thing. It is most prevalent in US media and cultural discourse tu yang trickle masuk negara kita, kita pulak rasa it is a solely US thing. The Malaysian public has got a long way to go before we can betul2 hadam Cultural Appropriation vs Cultural Appreciation. But, memang betul, these conversations are necessary to move forward as a country. Bravo Nalini and Says team! You guys really did a good job with providing us viewers with the basic resources to dive into these nuanced issues while not completely annihilating those who still think Malaysia 2020 is a utopia for all ethnicities.

    Siti cooking Rasam and crediting her Indian sources (Cultural Appreciation), Salmah selling Muruku while marketing it as Makanan Tradisional Melayu because Salmah thinks who cares about the origin as kelings don't matter anyway .(Cultural Appropriation)
    Mira Filzah Wearing Lehenga because she loves wearing them (Cultural Appreciation). Mira Filzah Wearing Lehenga to promote her contact lens because she (or her production team) thinks Malaysian Gujaratis don't care (Cultural Appropriation).

    She had a fried from a lower kasta (probably, the untouchable) and one day, her granpa realise about their friendship. Instead of praisibg her for befriending the lower kasta, he forbid her from meeting the friend again.

We are encouraged to come to school in different ethnicity costumes. So we had alot of Malay people wearing Chinese and traditional Indian costumes as well. Not an issue to address. Everyone is happy and we understand each culture's more better. So, having such tolerance and understanding of one another is important.

    ok pls note, I've only read the title and saw few seconds of this video. this isnt about "malay nows are now engrossed w American culture" which brings them to reason, that's why mira filzah got called of doing cultural appropriation.
    there's so many WRONGS in that statement and i feel like malays are forgetting huge part of this..... CULTURAL APPRECIATION.
    CULTURAL APPROPRIATION is when a person appropriate cultural that doesn't belong to them and adapt it to however they wish e.g sexualised cheongsam for halloween costume
    im not indian myself, but it's p obvs u can tell she hasnt appropriated any of the culture by wearing that attire.
    2nd thing is, i wanna mention, THAT CULTURAL APPROPRIATION is still huge issue so we still need to take americans movement as an inspiration but educated enough to call out someone if they DID ACTUALLLLLLY culturally appropriate something. calling out someone needs proof and futher details bc calling out smeone actually affects someone's livelihood

    As a Singapore Malay person here when I have already indian mix from my paternal grandmother who have maternal grandfather Gulam Maidin come from India (Madras) explained by my dad and Nenek. Am I cultural appropriating about researching back her indian roots, wear a gold border Vesthi only appropriate to Indian festival events, wearing my white plain cotton Lungi at home, have my four legged Indian ethnic elephant decoration as my shelf collections as I love elephants as with this indian mix blood it’s too part of my diverse roots and even decorate my room with Diwali deco during Deepavali times. I want to have my wife to be Indian Muslim.
    But I don’t wear Bindi Puttu because it’s for Hindus, I don’t public wear a turban because it’s only for Indian grooms, special events and Sikhs, Toe rings is for marriage people, I cannot be speaking to every Indian person Tamil language right because I’m am not full Indian but mix, I cannot be keeping Hindu god photos as It’s only for Hindus.
    Now I am willing to research more about my paternal grandmothers indian roots. Is that wrong appropriation
    Not all non Indians get understanding and exposure to Indian culture by Bollywood, some like myself after discovering that we or I have indian mix ancestry from one of our grandparents then we unlock go on researching and ask learning into Indian culture.

  • @kishinumaayumi

    Cultural appropriation is real and it happens in Malaysia too but this kind of example is a little tricky tau. Cause Malaysians have always shared eachother's clothing, food, languages, customes etc. We are a very culturally integrated society and we feel comfortable sharing things that come from eachother's cultures. If an indian person feels that it's disrespectful I have no right to just talk over them as I am of a bumiputra ethnic group. But in this instance, Mira Filzah is not claiming the cultural elements/discreditting the origins. It was clearly inspired by a form of media Malaysian have come accustommed to because if the healthy cultural integration we have. But I do understand it was rather unnecessary for her to put on the "costume" cause it has little to do with the product in itself.
