- The objective in this video is to capture a really nice and tranquil flower garden with three Canon lenses. The Canon 50mm f1.8, Canon 24mm f2.8, and the 10-18mm f4.5 wide angle lens. I show the differences between the 3 lenses in bright morning light, then in dark shade. I explain what I believe is the trade offs between each, and ultimately I hope I by the end of the video the you have not only a great feel for the lenses themselves and what they can do but also a great feel for the place I'm filming.

Really appreciated this video. Firstly, I own exactly the same camera as you, secondly, I happen to exactly these 3 lens but I haven't yet tried the video feature yet. You helped me a lot. I mean it's true that there are a lot of tutorial or comparison about these lenses, however, for me, the authors mostly use the full frame camera for the test, which I may not able to get an idea on my camera. I'm so glad you did and the park is beautiful. Thank again and looking forward to seeing more videos from you.

The 10-18 I noticed some distortion on that lens.It’s nice to have the bigger range to zoom but I like the cleaner image. I am going to purchase the 24mm. I have the 50mm already and I have really enjoyed it. Thanks again for the review.

After finally getting Magic Lantern installed on my T3i so that I can get a clean HDMI output, I’ve been trying to decide whether I need another lens, or whether the 18-55mm kit lens will do the job. Excellent real world test! I have a nifty 50 which I love, however, it always feels too close when I'm trying to photograph people in tight spaces. I was debating between the 10-18mm or the 24mm pancake but I'm really impressed with the quality of the 24mm.

Great comparison, thanks. For filming, I like the 24mm best, because it's a nice trade-off between angle and light. The 50mm is a bit shaky when filmed from the hand and the image distortion when turning around with the 10-18mm is too obvious.
great video. I have the efs 24 and the ef 50f1.8 and thinking about getting the 10-18 for use on my 80D, which does not do low light as well as your t7i
A very good video, where u can see how the different lenses are. Since i am going to use it as a webcam/streamer cam i want a good blur in the background with good sharpness on me. So i think the 24mm would be very good for that. Thanks for a good video :)

Excellent comparison.Wish you had taken from the same spot(like a tripod) with three lenses to see the area covered when wide open and sharpenss of the image .But really appreciate the efforts put into this :-)

i have the kit lens, 24 mm and 50 mm and i have been debating on whether i should get the 10-18 mm. this video was exactly what i needed. thanks for taking the time to make it.
so.. whats your opinion? i have 50mm, and for mainly video its just too close, not for everyday use. I'm considering to buy 24mm and now confused between that or 10-18mm...
The 24mm is much better indoors and is much sharper in general. But the 10-18mm is obviously much wider and has built in image stabilization. Two completely different lenses. I'd recommend the 24mm first. It's more useful in more situations because its f2.8 vs f4.5.

You magically have a video comparing the 3 lenses I wanted. Well I have the 50mm but I am struggling with seeing if I need the others! Do I get both or just one??? Thank you for just showing us and not giving us a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo! I just want to see the differences. See what they can do. Great footage.

10 18mm- photos great, video would suck if the lightning is not good (I hate this for video)
50mm- excellent depth of field, good for both video and pictures. But I have a hard time focusing if the subject is constantly moving and it's auto focus sucks little compared to 10-18mm, they are soo good with auto focus, very fast.
For those on a budget I recommend you all this lenses (the 10-18 may have not the best quality ever but makes a lot of diference 10mm to 24mm, and its great for real estate and architecture photoghrahy), and aside from this lenses I recomend you the 55-250 IS STM, 250mm in a cropped sensor is equivalent to 400mm so you can have crazy close ups

I have the OG 50mm from the 1980s but otherwise this trio is my go-to travel set up for my APSC camera.
I don’t feel the need to go longer for travel photography.
Nice video....I have all 3 and they complement each other well. The 10-18 and 24mm have quiet autofocusing for video but the 24mm and 50mm have really good optical quality for the price. If you can get your hands on the Canon 18-135 IS USM...it's a great overall lens with super fast and quiet autofocus...one of the best kit lenses I have ever used (even though it's not constant aperture). It's a little pricey when purchased alone, but in a kit it's great.

Thank you for doing the lens comparisons and including the kit lens. I have wondered what the difference is between using a 50 mm lens vs using the kit lens set at 50 mm. I didn't see much difference in the close-up stills. Perhaps the lower fstop on the 50 mm lens gives a blurry background.
Outdoors in good light the difference is much less noticeable vs indoors in low light. I really have to do an indoor video comparison, that's where the f1.8 really makes a difference. Other than creating the blurred background. Thanks for the comment, you just gave me my next video idea, indoor comparisons in low to average light.

I'm just using a cheap video editing software called Movavi. Not sure what bitrate I'm exporting at, but it looks the same as the video out of the camera. Maybe it's the 60fps that I like to film in.

I'm not joking. It's on the T7i at 1080p@60fps. Every says not to record at 60fps because it's not cinematic or whatever, but it looks fantastic. Drop it to 24fps or even 30fps and it looks pretty average. So I say why record average footage when the camera has the capability to record fantastic footage. Just uses more card space, but it looks so much cleaner and lifelike.

I have the same lenses as you have and they are all ok under sun shine but the problem starts at night...

I have the 50 and 10-18 for my Canon T5i but I might just get that 24mm for vlogging - my kit lens isn't STM so it's LOUD when focusing. Check out one of my videos and you'll see what I mean
Your Canon T7i gives great HD quality when recording. By any chance do you know if the Rebel T6 can give me the same HD quality as well ?
I don't think the t6 has Dual Pixel AF, and I believe it has a smaller sensor and older cpu chip. So I'm not sure how similar the image would be.
I would like to know how is canon 24mm stm for video.
Good video. The 50mm f1.8 make a loud noise for autofocus. I thought all STM lenses were quiet for videos
It is quieter than most lenses, but not completely silent. I think the kit lens is the quietest lens. Unfortunately it's also the least exciting to use.

I own the same camera and 2 of the lenses you showed, the 10-18mm and the 24mm. Instead of the 50 i purchased the 35mm macro lense since i enjoy close up photography. The 35mm gives me a nice field of view and even when not using it for close up.You have sparked an interest in the 50mm. Great video!

Ive heard that lens hoods are recommended to eliminate flare. Canon should include them.
lens hoods for wide angles are very small but help.

No, I don't do anything in post. Only cut video and add transitions.

For vlog which one you choose between 24mm and 10-18mm? can we capture our face with 24mm while caturing video from our hand? I am a new comer so is also a big problem.
The 24mm will get a really clean and detailed shot of your face vlogging. The 10-18mm will look much further away handheld. I prefer the 10-18mm for handheld vlogging, but if you have a little jobe handheld tripod for the 24mm it is much better picture quality.

Yes. The T7i.
I have these lenses, the 50mm is noisy and with no image stabilisation is pretty useless for video with how tight it shoots unless on a tripod. The 24mm is the best of both worlds but still no I.S. The kit Lens you can shoot wide, zoom in and it's image stabilised, Infact unless your shooting in pretty low light and want super detail it's a better option than all these due to its versatility. My favourite is the 24mm it's an alrounder without even trying to be.
Wouldn’t the 50mm lens be 80mm because of the crop factor since it’s Ef lens used on a Aps-c
That's tricky because if you use the kit lens at 50mm it's the same focal length as the 50mm f1.8. Visually there is no difference, it doesn't give you an 80mm EF-S focal length. So then I think the better way to think about is that on a full frame camera it's a true 50mm, vs the 1.6x crop that every lens EF-S or EF would experience on a crop sensor camera.

the 10-18 wasnt that great for video but the pics looked good. prob not gonna get it for now but ive been really enjoying my 50 and 24 mostly for portrait and fashion photography

Canons 50mm sucks for video if you want to keep the audio because the auto focus is so noisy, gets picked up by the mic. Canon 10-18mm STM actually works and is silent when focusing and it has image stabilisation. All three take nice stills.
I have the 50 mm, and it seems to me that it is an amazing bargain in terms of the image quality and the video quality. However, the autofocus noise is a bit frustrating.
Some of my absolute favorite lenses like the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, are very noisy. But the image and video quality I get is amazing, so I use an external RODE mic for all videos that I need clean audio with. I think it's pretty common issue a lot of lenses. Ironically the quietest lens I own is the kit lens with the stm motor. Probably specifically designed to be quite with no need for an external mic.
@@FitsandFun wow. I was just watching Christopher Frost review of the Sigma 18 to 35 last night. Funny that you mention that lens. He raved about it and said it was just about the best quality as far as images of any Zoom lens that he had ever reviewed. It is definitely at the top of my want list. The only negative he really spoke about with the lack of image stabilization.
Yeah, most ultra sharp lenses don't have stabilization. Except the telephoto lenses that really need stabilization from about 100mm and up. At least that's been my experience.

You’re getting quite a bit of glare.... maybe a lens hood or something might help it. Also for it to be a canon I’m not seeing colors. I’m gonna check other vids to make sure it’s not me.
This footage is not color corrected like many other youtubers will do. They up the saturation in post, I show straight out of the camera. And the glare is intentional, that's why I stood directly in the suns path while vlogging.
Please, next time use a tripod and don't move the camera and change the lenses then take just a picture with each one, I would have loved to see the difference in width of all the lenses, to know if its worth it for me to buy the 10-18 if I already own the 18-55. I want a wide angle. Thank you for the video.
I have 10-18mm and it"s so good! Great for video. The stabilizer is awesome and the STM is so silent but the downside is the mounting part is plaatic instead of metal
Questions let's say I want to take some photos at a band that is playing at a restaurant. Stage has lights and gig is at night. Which is the best lence to use
The 50mm f1.8. Anything with an f2.0 or lower would be best for low light. The 24mm f2.8 might be ok if a grainy image is ok.
