      +Naoki Akechi Might just be the ones who are most willing to be interviewed, rather than him picking them out specifically, imho.
      But, I agree with you, the views of Japanese men vary greatly.

      +Naoki Akechi It is very common for things like this to happen with any kind of research. In America, there is a saying that all Psychology is built on the Introductory Psychology student, which is because It is easier to get those students to participate in a study than other people.

      I think that's because, in the west, there is a serious relationship and friend with benefits kind of relationship. While in Japan, the interviewees in this video seemed to be talking about serious relationships and marriage when speaking about girlfriend or relationship. I am sure in America too, if guys want serious relationship, they won't be just saying "Yeah, I'd nail that" but I do see where you are coming from coz some of my friends are just in a relationship coz their girlfriend is good in bed or has big booty. -_-

      The way they develop elaborate ideas about the women's personalities, based on seeing them jabber in a language they don't understand on a chat show. A fair bit of projection there, I'd say!

      Japanese men are so family-minded. When you marry them, they expect you to stay at home, cooking, cleaning, take a good care of children, etc since nanny cost in Japan is so expensive. So, that's why these days many Japanese girl don't want to get married:(
      Instead, they choose foreign guy.
      Same goes for the guys, dating foreign women is like prestige
      But , I believe there are also Japanese guy who believe in equality of men and women:)
      For dating, They can be fun. For marriage, nah...ahahaha..

    If you are Southeast Asian, let me remind you that it's just ONE guy who made that comment. The second most popular kind of international marriage in Japan is between Japanese men and Southeast Asian women (the most common one is between other East Asian women and Japanese men). So obviously a lot of Japanese men are into Southeast Asian women.

    I love how insightful these answers are. They're not only saying stuff like "Nice body" or stuff about their looks only, but they actually take the time to think about what their personalities might be like. Of course they can't really know that, but I love it how they consider it so well.

    • @demianhaki7598
      @demianhaki7598 8 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      +Riadanian Daae I actually thought their thoughts on their personalities came off as just as superficial as the evaluation of their looks. Seemed to be based on clichee assumptions of what certain women are typically like. Not very insightful in my opinion...

    • @adele2952
      @adele2952 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      +Demian Haki I'm basing this off on the way I've mostly heard men talk about female celebrities... at least these guys tried to comment on their personalities and didn't just discuss their chests and behinds. :D But yeah, perhaps insightful wasn't the word for it.

    • @TheRealityofFake
      @TheRealityofFake 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Riadanian Daae I think maybe they were asked to make guesses of what their personalities would be like. I didn't really find the answers all that insightful though. It was more of this girl has sharp features, so she's probably demanding and egotistical, and this girl has soft features so she's probably kind and affectionate.

    Judging entirely on videos from TH-cam I've noticed Japanese tend to (again within videos) sometimes focus on how American someone is. Like there is a distinction between Americans who are white or black being somehow more American than Americans who happen to be Asian, Latino, Arab, etc..
    Remarking on the person's ethnicity as something not truly American.
    Just an observation solely based upon TH-cam videos and not any personal experience so take it with a grain of salt.

      When you think about it, distinguishing between ethnicity or race is VERY American. Our history is filled with clashes between ethnic groups, and our modern society is still distinguished between them. There are Black people who act "Black" in an American sense that don't act anything like Black people in other countries. You can see in the news all over the country, especially recently, headlines like: "Cop kills black teenager"

    • @EvanSaltare
      @EvanSaltare 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      坂田 金時 (Sakata Kintoki) I see what you mean but I'm not talking in terms of behavior. And certainly there are still those who sadly see race and only race within our country. However I'm speaking strictly on an outsider's perspective. And it's not just limited to the Japanese, I've heard the same from Europeans but that was actually thru conversation.
      Even if it's not meant in a negative way there is an effort made to point out "oh they are chinese" or require further information if u say you're American.

      Katherin Bookish lol I think about that exact scenario sometimes. In my opinion if someone is a U.S. citizen they're American. Simple as that. My mother who was born in Puerto Rico, born a U.S. citizen and had lived for 60 years between New York and Florida still refers to only to white people as American.
      It's funny but confusing at the same time.

      The tri suffix means 3, syllables on the other hand, are the distinct sounds in a word. Syllable is trisyllabic since you would pronounce it sill-ah-bull whereas trisyllabic has 4 syllables try-sill-ah-bik.

    It is interesting that many foreigners take these Japanese men as if they were talking seriously. If you do not understand Japan's unique "お笑い owarai" culture, it may be difficult to understand their intentions. Especially the last guy who is joking with serious face has a good sense of humor.

    Just a quick note to everyone watching the video: keep in mind that one of the questions was "what kind of personality do you think she'd have?" It's not like Japanese guys are so "deep" they look at a girl and immediately try to figure out what she's like while ignoring her personality lol. I'm sure if you let them be, they'd have talked about her looks and moved on, since that's the only thing you could actually tell from a picture. Funny video. Loved when the one guy said he'd pick Mila Kunis as a life partner. Like...getting a little too caught up in the fantasy there lol?

    You should've mentioned that Mila kunis is a Ukrainian Jew not ethnically Slavic and that her family was forced to leave because of growing antisemitism. A Ukrainian politician even said she wasn't a "real Ukrainian" because she's a "jewess."

    • @RedHairdo
      @RedHairdo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AM Y Jews Ethnicity is unrelated to being an "Ukranian" or "Jew", so I don't see your point. I'm assuming you just picked the wrong word.
      Don't you just mean "origin"? Either religious or national. Ethnicity implies what many of us erroneously call "race". (Black, white, south american indian etc..)

    • @AMY-df4sn
      @AMY-df4sn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +RedHairdo Jewishness is an ethnicity and cultural identity ever heard of a pan ethnicity (like Latinos) ? She was a Ukrainian national but not ethnically Slavic/Ukrainian.... Re-read what I wrote.

    • @AMY-df4sn
      @AMY-df4sn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RedHairdo no I picked the right word. And no ethnicity and race are not the same thing. Jewishness is an ethnoreligion unlike Christianity / Islam (even though there are converts).

    • @RedHairdo
      @RedHairdo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AM Y I had written a very elaborate reply, but I decided to do a lot of reading on the very definition of "ethnicity", and it turned out, unbeknownst to me, that in fact there is a huge debate over the decades whether or not religion should be considered as one of the many elements that make up an ethnic group.
      Meaning I was approaching the use of the word one way, and you another. Of course, I find it absolutely nonsensical to include that variable in the mix, but oh well.
      Eitherway, I already read what you wrote correctly the first time, and thus there's nothing for me to "re-read", don't be so arrogant. But I (and you) did have to look up on how the terminology on "ethnicity" is still somewhat "unstable".
      Oh, and by the way, I never implied race and ethnicity were the same thing, but instead what people erroneously call a "race". (Turns out it is _you_ who have to re-read what I said in the end.) Difference in race is what we see in different cats, dogs and whatnot, but ALL living humans today, black, white or otherwise, are all biologically part of the same _race_ scientifically denominated "Homo Sapiens Sapiens" (yes, "Sapiens" twice). The very, very small biological implications among humans of a different ancestry is one, if not _the_ main reason, the word "ethnicity" has come into existence for. So when you said that they "are not the same thing", I hope you were not implying that biological ancestry is excluded from its definition, considering its importance. I'll assume you weren't.

    As a Dominican- American this is discouraging but wholly unsurprising. From my experience Japanese people like white foreigners the best. The whiter the better. Black people are more exotic so in that sense they are attractive or cool. And despite the guy's comment in the video, south east asians, and of course Koreans and Chinese, are asian too so they're more similar in body type and some features which I think generally makes them attractive to Japanese people. But Latinos? We are invisible/unattractive here it feels like. As much as I love living in this country I should probably start thinking about leaving unless I want to be single forever....

I totally disagree--I think Asian men are gorgeous--but that's a particular prejudice. They see Asian men as non-manly. And some see darker-skinned or black or biracial women as not as good as white or Asian women. We all have prejudices. I find all races attractive--I've had crushes on black, biracial, Latino, Irish-American, German-American guys, and Jewish guys. I've met several Filipino and worked with a Filipino gal. I usually think they're supercute. But clearly, many of these guys just don't like darker type girls. Beyonce, being sexual and famous as heck, probably pushes different buttons.

    • @TheNaomeister
      @TheNaomeister 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +TheDrakon Well, I've found that there's a lot that you can gleam about a person's personality just by watching them, seeing how they act and carry themselves, looking at the expressions on their face, and such. While looks CAN be deceiving and first impressions CAN easily be wrong, on average I've found they're more often right than not.
      And knowing these celebrities like I've seen in their off hours (on shows where they get an opportunity to just be themselves, or on Youube clips where they're just hanging around and doing whatever), I can actually agree a fair bit with a lot of their conclusions. However, I've also never met any of them, so it could be completely off base and they could all be completely different from how I imagine them.

    • @RedHairdo
      @RedHairdo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheNaomeister The point is that you never know enough to be assertive about your early conclusions from just looking. Sometimes we just are poor judges, and during other times, we normally get something right, but something exceptional might be up with a specific person, meaning that if you are going to "guess" anyone's personality, you _must_ always be 100% humble about it and remind yourself you may be absolutely wrong, absolutely right, or something in-between, no matter what you think you can or can not tell.
      Meaning it's more often than not a very pointless thing. *_The only answer that is 100% guaranteed to be correct is "I dont know."._* Even when you guess something right, it does not necessarily mean you got it right for the actual reason something is the way it is, and in such cases, you may believe you're right, and live the rest of your life thinking you were right, while you were wrong all along.

    • @Hana-up5gl
      @Hana-up5gl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +RedHairdo They were asked to give their opinions on them. Should they all have just said "I don't know"? Or should they all have just said "I think this and this but in the end I don't know"? It's pointless to say that. Everyone knows they're just basing off their opinions on the appearance and the way the women present themselves. There's really no point in saying any of that because *everyone knows* that *no one except* the ones who actually know them can be sure of what they say.
      So I don't see why is this an issue. Everyone is based off of looks and the way they present themselves everywhere. If someone thinks you look like someone who is arrogant they won't approach you, if you're not tidied enough in a job interview they won't hire you, etc. Really, that's how it works in the real world, and if these men were asked questions, it's only natural for them to find an answer according to what they think of what they see.

  • @elizabethjohnson3294

    What I noticed when watching this video, was that the Japanese men gave very in-depth and sincere answers to each woman they saw even if they did not find her their own personal types. In other videos of American men rating women, American men (in general) will give very short and concise answers that do not have much depth to them. They will just say something along the lines of, "Oh yeah. She's hot. I'd date her" or "No, no way". Whereas these young Japanese men gave responses to the women's appearances, what they thought their personalities may be like, and in general were very respectful about their critiques. It was a very insightful video.

    I noticed that in Japan because they are surrounded by women who are of fairer skin, they prefer those type of women. Whereas, if it was a darker women, they would say she is pretty but aren't drawn to them as much.

    It's weird seeing the assumptions people make when they don't know the language. Especially with Mila Kunis. She's pretty much the exact opposite of what they were saying at the beginning.

    I intend to go to japan , so this is a huge fear of mine . I'm short (4'9) , pale , freckley , dark ginger , and I'm quite afraid of what they will see me like , regardless of my asian heritage . but I think with how much I love the culture and want to go , I can get over it .
    still gives me a little panic attack .

    It's interesting to see how detailed and deep their analysis of celebrities were. Although their feedback was only based on short clips of these celebrities, their comments were not as surface or shallow as American comments tend to be about celebrities. Makes me wonder if Japanese people tend to be more deep due to culture or if this is just particular to the men interviewed.

      Well he did ask them a specific question providing them with little to go off of. If they didn't use their imagination then every answer would be 'I don't know her but she's pretty.' They got called shallow for judging their personalities on nothing but a short video. They'd have been called shallow too had they ignored it and only judged what they could see.

  • @shounenbat510

    Those were some interesting answers. On the one hand, they seemed to put as much focus on personality as they did on looks, even if they were just making wild guesses. On the other hand, their speculations about personality reveal a lot about the more sexist undercurrents in Japanese society.
    I thought it was very telling that they were hung up on women who were career-oriented and might not become a baby-making machine. They seemed to want women who were docile, submissive, and very nurturing, with a bit of a spark to keep the mood light.

    4:37 they seem to be very judgmental (in a bad way)

  • @BioTransXX
    @BioTransXX 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's really interesting how they judge a persons personality or demeanor solely on looks alone. I mean everyone judges everyone initially on looks first, but its interesting when these men do it because they go a lot more in depth, even down to thinking that someone would be fun to hang out with at the beach even though there were no beaches or beach settings to influence that thought or that someone is egotistical and a bad person. I would have loved to see a more in depth interview to find out what made them come to their conclusions.

  • @dania7124
    @dania7124 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haha I agree with the guy so much about Leslie's hair. Not a flattering hairstyle for her, but she is beautiful for sure. Very interesting! Can you do this and include more diverse celebrities? For example, Lupita, Tinashe, FKA Twigs, Yaya Dacosta and Rihanna!
