Like I have a base of a dorset accent (RP accent), since thats the correct english Iearned through exposure. But i also copied subtle nuances of how my filipino mother speaks english. And know pronounciations of specific words in the american manner due to friends and the simpsons. With Yuta he clearly started learning in Katakana form and then later corrected himself but kept the echoes of the accent he memorised. Later he likely encountered the difference between L and R because i hear him emphasising the R sound, overcompensating to sound more american. He says his vowels in a rather Japanese manner. But then he learned certain words in the softer english pronunciation. Like when he says more. He says Maw like an english person as opposed to the hard R Morrr. If he wanted he could totally just live somewhere english speaking 9for like 2 years) and completely remove the kinks to sound completely authentic.

And I understood pretty much all of it. since im from the south. Florida to be exact. although it doesn't really feel southern at all to be honest. well at least where im from. my bff might say otherwise since he grew up on a farm.

16:10 that is such a common misconception! Everyone has an accent and there is no "standard" English. In the UK alone there are hundreds of accents. So be proud of your accent, native or not!

The standard accent favoured by those media now is called "Estuary English", but still that's no more a standard than RP ever was!

I would say Yuta's is Japanese speaking vaguely Standard British with bits of American. It's pretty hard to pin a non-native speaker down to specifics because it will be all sorts mixed in. Also 'British' and 'American' are incredibly broad on their own.
My brother’s wife is Japanese, but she speaks English with an English accent because she learned from a native English tutor. You would never know she was Japanese if you only heard her. As for the US accent, you could do a whole different video pointing out the various accents that are spoken there. Same for the UK + Ireland.
The U.K is made up of 4 countries. Saying a "U.K accent" is like saying an American accent, but meaning any accent from either Canada, U.S, Mexico and Brasil...
@@nootics This is fairly accurate. I did an accent test a few years ago which asked a lot of questions about how would you say certain words, and eventually it pinpointed to the area exactly where I was raised!

With the filipino accent the consonants tend to be very hard and the vowels are very similar to italian and spanish but there are regional (north & south) differences.
That was a very soft Scottish accent, being Scottish myself it was easy to tell it was Scottish. But, there are a lot rougher and more intense Scottish accents out there that would be more difficult and unique to tell. Would love to see someone trying to guess an accent like that.

I'm English (from the East), I was having trouble guessing which city she was from - any idea? My final guess was Glasgow, even though obviosly she doesn't have the classic Glaswegian accent I would say from some of her vowel sounds it resembled that more than any other scottish accent I can pinpoint (which isn't many)!

UK/England is actually a pretty good guess for Yuta's accent, his accent has a lot of characteristics of an accent from southern England, like the low vowels in words like "ask" and "what", and non-rhotic "r" in words like "Morty" or "hard".

I'm usually great at these dialect quizzes, but the one after Yuta had me stumped. I have coworkers from that place and it doesn't sound similar to them at all
wrote down some things while listening.. 0:53 I think my english is pretty good but had to listen couple of times before realising it was compel not compare and that "hee haw" must be "hit hard", realising it was rick and morty dialogue helped, with strong accents got to have those context clues, but yea southern US. 4:44 one of the most recognisable accents ever, india. 7:17 japanese, mostly because of intonation but also hwaard, fokahs, and some of the S sounds .. edit: didn't actually realise it was Yuta 9:37 seemed clear it wasn't native but couldn't pinpoint from where, some words sounded vaguely african influenced but not really, no experience with philippines so not too surprised. 12:24 thought I heard "cehmical" and by "hets" was between irish or scottish but the R made it clearly scottish. none of them was particularly pronounced though, I like my accents thick.
I immediately recognized the Filipino accent after hearing "hello"(because I'm Filipino); the rest, I had to hear the longer monologue to get the correct accent including Yuta's.
This happened to me too. At first, I couldn't tell if someone else had a Spanish/Latino accent in English unless it was very thick and evident. But I also had trouble recognizing different English accents in general. It's been a few years now and I'm getting better at that. From talking to other people, it seems like learning to distinguish accents in your target language is an advanced skill.

On the topic of accents: I have recently watched a relatively old anime called „Shinreigari“ or „ghost hound“ and the accent in there sounded really different from normal Japanese and really good. A little internet research showed it to be Fukuoka-ben or Hakata-ben. Can you do a video on this accent?
You should check out Mashiro No Oto that just aired this last season. The main character and everyone from where he's from speak the Tsugaru dialect and it sounds much different from standard Japanese.
@@Tohlemiach Yeah I dont know why, but I feel like the japanese dialects sound friendlier than standard japanese. Maybe its because its what you speak to friends and family, and standard japanese is the business/polite language.
@@hauptmann25 Yeah I think it could definitely have a lot to do with that. You hear the dialects almost always without honorifics, so I think that's going to give them the impression that they're more intimate. I guess it would be good to compare casual standard Japanese to these other dialects. I'd still say they sound warmer and rounder, and I think it has a lot to do with their regular usage of "ya" instead of "da". It's just a softer sound.

This was easy. I got them all apart from the Philippines one. I only got the Japan one because it was obviously Yuta's voice. And the Philippines one I thought sounded similar to the Indian one, just not as strong.
When it came to the Philippine part I was Laughing because I knew it was Filipino because of the Pronunciation and stops. And then realized that I knew this because I'm Filipino
I thought the Japanese one was the UK too. His accent is pretty clean and fluent. Especially when fellow Japanese speakers couldn't pick out an accent they may have speaking a foreign language.
Yuta’s British accent was not bad. When I was going through the second clip: This is definitely British accent but something is strange. When I heard the third one: Haha, this is clearly Yuta. The beginning “When I was little” reveals that the speaker is not native. But the pronunciation of latter part was quite impressive. Yuta does grab the essence of British style of speech.
Since i made quite wide rounds around the internet i could tell almost all the accents. Only one i had trouble with was the philipines one. I haven't heard many people from there yet.

I got them all right! haha! Hearing a Japanese guy day England was amazing. And being British myself and hear that lady say "British people don't have and accent. because we're native speakers." I think I know what she meant. As soon as I heard that (C) "Hello", I knew it was Yuta. Very easy to distinguish, if you follow his channel, that is. Otherwise, the "S" sound specifically is the giveaway here. Very Japanese specific.

I guessed all accents correctly the first time, I was a little confused at Yuta's version because the first two audio really sounded like British but the third gave it away
As a Brit, I found the non-native accents pretty hard, but the African American, Scottish and Indian accents were very easy to identify. The thing with the non-native accents was that they had a really high level of spoken English so lost many of the typical "giveaway" signs you might associate with them. In my defence, here in the UK you don't hear loads of Japanese or Filipino accents!

Great video, Yuta! I nailed the American and Indian accents, but completely botched YOUR accent, LOL! (I had guessed northern Africa for yours.) The Filipino accent was interesting and I was slightly off for the Scottish accent as I had guessed northern England. This test is a lot of fun for native English speakers as well! This is the script for the first 3 English conversations from the Southern USA with Ebonics. 1) "Hello." 2) "Listen, Mory, I hate to break it to you, but what people call love is just a chemical reaction that compel animals to breed. It hit hard, Mory. Then it slowly fade leaving you stranded in a failing marriage. I did it; your parents gonna do it. Break the cycle, Mory, rise above! The only accent that wasn't immediately obvious to me (American) was the Philippine accent. I thought it was Italian (see Melodica Bros for example).

Actually the number in the UK who speak something like the queen is 2% or less now.
The fillipino accent was the hardest to tell as an european who has plenty of experience with english speakers.

I immediately recognized the Filipino accent after hearing "hello"(because I'm Filipino); the rest, I had to hear the longer monologue to get the correct accent including Yuta's.
As a Filipino, I knew D is a Filipino by his "hello".
I figured it out when I heard the vowels and hard consonants.

This happened to me too. At first, I couldn't tell if someone else had a Spanish/Latino accent in English unless it was very thick and evident.
But I also had trouble recognizing different English accents in general. It's been a few years now and I'm getting better at that.
From talking to other people, it seems like learning to distinguish accents in your target language is an advanced skill.

I have recently watched a relatively old anime called „Shinreigari“ or „ghost hound“ and the accent in there sounded really different from normal Japanese and really good. A little internet research showed it to be Fukuoka-ben or Hakata-ben. Can you do a video on this accent?
You should check out Mashiro No Oto that just aired this last season. The main character and everyone from where he's from speak the Tsugaru dialect and it sounds much different from standard Japanese.
@@Tohlemiach Yeah I dont know why, but I feel like the japanese dialects sound friendlier than standard japanese. Maybe its because its what you speak to friends and family, and standard japanese is the business/polite language.
@@hauptmann25 Yeah I think it could definitely have a lot to do with that. You hear the dialects almost always without honorifics, so I think that's going to give them the impression that they're more intimate. I guess it would be good to compare casual standard Japanese to these other dialects. I'd still say they sound warmer and rounder, and I think it has a lot to do with their regular usage of "ya" instead of "da". It's just a softer sound.

This was easy. I got them all apart from the Philippines one. I only got the Japan one because it was obviously Yuta's voice. And the Philippines one I thought sounded similar to the Indian one, just not as strong.

The beginning “When I was little” reveals that the speaker is not native. But the pronunciation of latter part was quite impressive. Yuta does grab the essence of British style of speech.

Hearing a Japanese guy day England was amazing. And being British myself and hear that lady say "British people don't have and accent. because we're native speakers." I think I know what she meant. But it still made me laugh alot!!! Because in Britain we have more than 1 accent in our country. Even across the the diffent countries that make it up. Please keep doing these videos. I guessed all accents correctly the first time, I was a little confused at Yuta's version because the first two audio really sounded like British but the third gave it away
As a Brit, I found the non-native accents pretty hard, but the African American, Scottish and Indian accents were very easy to identify. The thing with the non-native accents was that they had a really high level of spoken English so lost many of the typical "giveaway" signs you might associate with them. In my defence, here in the UK you don't hear loads of Japanese or Filipino accents!

Great video, Yuta! I nailed the American and Indian accents, but completely botched YOUR accent, LOL! (I had guessed northern Africa for yours.) The Filipino accent was interesting and I was slightly off for the Scottish accent as I had guessed northern England. This test is a lot of fun for native English speakers as well!
