Thanks so much Billy. My son just purchased 45 acres in Seminole, Alabama. I’m retired and assisting him with his land. I absolutely love your commentaries and educational video’s. I’ve purchased some old throw away axes and new files to follow your video’s. Wow I really enjoy the gritty hard work and appreciate how sharp I’ve been able get the axe. Hopefully I can find old rusty HB and bring it back to life. I’ll send a pic after I’m done. Thank you, god bless. Al

I file mine and then stone if needed. It's easier to keep the cheek profile right with a file, but it's also easy to cut yourself, too!!
We never used an axe when I was a kid, either - not right, at least. It was a handle with a polled head on it to beat things, we split wood with a maul and cut it with a chainsaw, but I've come to appreciate hand tools later and the whole idea of geometry and edge finish/sharpness.
at 3:00 - that's what we would've called the root profile. Good for axing tree roots in the middle of the dirt!! I've eased the cheeks on all of mine and they have just enough left to keep them from sticking but not enough to keep them from penetrating. They're a joy to use. It's important to protect the edge, but the geometry is more important than the particular method used to finish the edge.

Still pure gold. My grandfather's axe, 3 of them were never been happier. In 2022 it's a trend to throw away old stuff and replace with cheap new. You instead inspire people to priorize quality and real value, true things in life. I have more words to say but they are needless, cause your content says them all. This is it!

I love how you're honest with yourself and everyone else. Not wanting to put people on back orders tells me that you're not doing this because you like it, rather than you're doing it because you love it. Plus you throw bones to other's. You're video with your neighborhood chainsaw man at his Saloon thought me that there's more to testing a axe than chopping a tree. Thanks again for doing what you do and just being yourself. Stay kind and Thank You until you're better paid.

I I have an axe I really like for chopping through stuff, but I wouldn’t split wood with it if I could go get my splitting maul. I grew up splitting about ten cord of wood every summer to make our winter heat. I loved the workout and I loved making pieces fly. I was really small, under 100 pounds, but I always got the strength to weight records in high school and in the Ranger battalion. I had no trouble swinging the maul but I didn’t do as well splitting with the axes I tried.
I’ll be on the lookout for different axe types at the garage sales. I can’t swing them anymore, but I can sharpen them and pretend I’m going to use it.

Perfect! Exactly what I felt would be useful for many folks... A LOT of good information in this video Buckin'!
Some of this stuff is not intuitive, e.g., like how to get rid of the big nicks, how to shape the cheeks for clearance... You gave up the secrets and mysteries Buckin'!
Me personally, I include another step between the filing and stoning. I draw file the face and edge with a smooth single cut file to remove the file marks and facets. That makes the stoning task easier and quicker and I like the looks. But that's me... I'm a victim of my early socialization to tools and workmanship. LOL
