The wrap technique you use is called a "whip wrap". It is also used when wrapping an archery bow string, or to finish the end of a rope to prevent fraying. I am sure you know this, but some of your viewers may not.
Rather than using seal all, twist/snug the whipping up as tight as possible at the bottom, then fully saturate ALL of the paracord top to bottom with a thin CA glue - it chemically converts/melts the sheathing and individual nylon strength cords inside the paracord to a single piece of perfectly formed and EXTREMELY durable armor with outstanding impact and abrasion resistance. An added benefit is that BLO can be applied to both the handle and whipping after the fact to further re-enforce and condition both the wood and wrap. I use this trick to make bulletproof overstrike collars for splitting axes and mauls. It works a treat, especially with some 5 to 7 millimeter sheet rubber and a wrap or two of hockey grip tape underneath.
Buckin’. You’re a good man. The energy. The entertainment. Your teaching. Your Reflection on Life. It’s all Good. I will wrap. And it too will be good. Well, we’ll see about that. Thank you. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Steve. Plymouth, MA
I’ve been watching the channel for a while now and loving it! With all the tips and tricks I’ve learned I have been able to take my grandpa’s old 3 1/2 pound GBA and turn it into a beautiful axe that I’ll cherish forever. Thank you!
First video I've seen from this channel. I am ADHD and you made it easy to watch a 20+ minute video about wrapping a handle. I couldn't hit subscribe fast enough.
Buckin I saw this string whipping you did on this handle and I was so glad! I hung a small rigging ax head years ago and it became damaged. I saw a small crack appear and thought if I reinforce the handle this way, it should last until I’m done! Thanks BBRS.
"Super tight. Oh yeah!!" Lmao, dude I love the enthusiasm. I'm working on my step dads old pickaxe right now, it's an old one. The old style where you can just smack the head down and remove it from the handle. So I wanted to wrap the handle and make it a bit more secure. This was very helpful, thank you.
Buckin good morning. I use the same type of wrap on handles. I use Starbrite super glue, thin, to secure the wrap. It is like water and flows into the threads, there is no need to loosen the threads it will go straight through to the wood. Oh and don't grab it with your hands before it sets. I was splitting wood for two days before it let of of my hand 😉😉
What kind of string/wrap do you use? I watched the video but didn't catch the name or maybe it was a term I'm not used to so I missed it. Kinda lools like paracord, but thinner than 550.
@@DavidWhite thanks so much for that info! I just got a new Michigan headed axe. Gonna try that out. Do you only wrap the top or also at the bottom where your other hand goes.
@@Gideon_Judges6 It depends on the handle. If the handle has a knob on the end I don't wrap. It lets my hand slide all the way to the end when swinging.

Bought my daughter a Boy's Axe last christmas, I love the size- I use it all the time to chop ivy, cut the stringers on wood I'm splitting, chopping vines out of the ground. Its fantastic, lots handier than a hatchet. You'd think it doesn't hit hard given its size but it sure does.

I personally wrap my splitting axes and mauls with a thicker steel wire which I then wrap with a layer or two of electrical tape. It protects the wood very well and the tape keeps the wire from becoming loose.
I'd recommend wrapping all the way to the head. It looks better number one, but also overstrikes don't always happen because you miss the log. Sometimes the wood splits around your bit in an unpredictable way and so the overstrike can find its way right under the chin of your axe into the handle.
Love it, I'll have to try that sometime. I use a piece of rubber not too thick and electrical tape it to the axe in this same fashion. If done with care, it looks nice and get good stretch with the electrical tape. First time viewer. I'm gonna try it on my favourite chopping axe. I'm from a long line of lumberjacks and my grandfather use to carve his own axe handles mostly the style of the old swede/buck saw era when axes were used to limb the trees. These handles are not as thick in circumference so they can be easily twisted while flicking off branches with one hand to boot. These types of axe handle were purposely designed to break off where attached to the head in case of a bad blow to avoid injury from a very sharp axe. Keep up the good work. 🇨🇦
@@beckydavis566 - yeah those Killinger’s are awesome, I’ve been over on his YT channel. But, very hard to get it seems. They fly off the shelves in a hurry, more demand than supply I suppose.
Cool trick! How do you oil the handle with this permanent wrap? Or do you remove it every say a year? PS: Or do you make a linseed oil coat over the wrap?
I’m teaching our 10 year old girl how to split wood. She has taken a real liking to it has a bit of an issue over stricken though haha. Actually just went to the hardware store this after noon and let her pick out her own handle and taught her how to set the head. Anyway I will be using this method on hers for sure for a little re enforcement just out of curiosity what cord are you using for the wrap? Thanks for the great videos been watching for years your a positive inspiration for many👍
he's using a thinner paracord. thickness doesn't really matter, the thickness isn't what protects, it just stops the wood from splitting out or as bad as it could be. You can do it with dollar store twine or anything fine, haha. Do it in red/yellow/orange and you'll never misplace your tool! but I'd guess it's 425 or 325 cord, both of which would be great for this (probably 425)

Man, where do you get those handles? Do you make them yourself? They're absolutely gorgeous.
Love from Slovenia!
I was wondering the same thing. Those curvy handles are sexy as heck
I think those are from Killinger on Etsy.
@@jeffreyrubish347 - yep, you’re right. Thank you sir.
He gets a lot of the handles from Kilinger.
@@beckydavis566 - yeah those Killinger’s are awesome, I’ve been over on his YT channel. But, very hard to get it seems. They fly off the shelves in a hurry, more demand than supply I suppose.
Beautiful work, genius, thanks for sharing this info
You are a real life super hero!
ha ha..... love .....
Cool trick!
How do you oil the handle with this permanent wrap? Or do you remove it every say a year?
PS: Or do you make a linseed oil coat over the wrap?
Mornin everyone!!

Thanks for the great videos been watching for years your a positive inspiration for many👍
What type/kind of string did you use? I use leather boot strings to do basically the same thing. Thanks again for another great video!
he's using a thinner paracord.
thickness doesn't really matter, the thickness isn't what protects, it just stops the wood from splitting out or as bad as it could be. You can do it with dollar store twine or anything fine, haha. Do it in red/yellow/orange and you'll never misplace your tool!
but I'd guess it's 425 or 325 cord, both of which would be great for this (probably 425)
